LCS Students Place Bluebird Boxes BY ANN MEAD ASH

class for students in grades five through eight in the late fall of 2020. As part of that class, this spring, under the supervision of substitute teacher Ron Whiting, the students took on the challenge of constructing and waterproofing 14 bluebird houses, which they placed strategically along the Warwick-to-Ephrata Rail Trail. The project involved utilizing skills in mechanics, math, and engineering. Whiting, who has experience overseeing similar projects, explained that bluebird houses are specially designed for the nesting habits of the birds. “Bluebird houses have an entrance hole 1 and onequarter inches in diameter, and the door has a hinge so that it can be opened in order to collect information about the nest success and to clean out the nest after each clutch leaves,” explained Whiting, who pointed out that bluebirds may lay two clutches of eggs in a breeding season. WEF Grant Teaches About Stream Erosion Prevention
Fifth-grade Warwick Elementary school students gained hands-on experience with stream erosion this year when the Warwick Education Foundation provided a grant for stream erosion tables at all four elementary schools.
INSIDE THIS ISSUE
Warwick Education Foundation (WEF) exists to promote enriched education experiences in the Warwick School District. One of the ways this is accomplished is by creating partnerships between the district and the community in order to invest in students. To that end, WEF gives grants to teachers who apply for funds to enhance learning opportunities. A $1,000 grant from WEF brought stream table erosion labs to the four Lititz elementary schools, giving fifth-grade science students the opportunity to try prevention methods on a small scale.

added that it is important to remove the first nest because bluebirds will build a second nest on top of their first nest. “That could cause an unsafe situation as a baby bird could fall out of the entrance hole before it’s ready to fly,” said Whiting. Whiting connected with representatives of Warwick Township for help with the project, and he reported that the organization was easy to work with. “(They were) helpful in supplying us with signposts that Warwick Township public works superintendent Jason Minnich cut and powder coated for our project,” said Whiting, adding that he emailed the township office and was quickly directed to Minnich for help and guidance. Eighth-grade students accompanied Whiting to place the boxes along the rail trail. “The Warwickto-Ephrata Rail Trail is an excellent habitat for bluebirds,” noted Whiting, who added that the birds prefer to sit in mature trees bordering grassy fields where they can watch for their next meal and then swoop down and grab insects out of the grass.

doing anything like this when I retired,” said Dan. In fact, after Dan and his wife, Phyllis, lost their son, Andy, in an auto accident four years ago, Dan did not initially attend BASIS meetings. But when Phyllis came home from meetings she attended in Akron, Dan had questions for her. “Nobody ever pictures losing a child,” stated Dan. Now, Dan wants to let those who have shared his experience of losing a child know that BASIS is there for them. “Your heart just goes out to people,” said Dan, who added that the loss of a child can lead to a shift in a parent’s social network. “Everyone is there at the beginning, but the friendship circle changes (in time),” explained Dan, who noted that BASIS brings grieving people together to walk beside each other. When Dan felt God calling him to join the ministry, he trained to become an associate. “(The training) changed the way I looked at things,” he said, noting that he learned about different ways individuals handle grief. Dan acknowledged that because men and women often grieve differently, BASIS has styled the support group atmosphere to be comfortable for all involved. Speaking is not required, but those who wish to are encouraged to share their feelings. The pandemic and consequent mitigation efforts have spurred the ministry to expand its offerings. Citing rising suicide rates and COVID-19 losses, Dan noted, “Families need to connect, and we are looking to branch out to other churches throughout the county.” Dan is meeting with pastors and heads of ministries to find ways to bring the support BASIS offers to new places in Lancaster County and beyond. Currently, two meetings are held monthly in Lancaster County one in Paradise and the other in Akron. Masking and social distancing measures are used to promote safety during the meetings. Readers who are interested in joining or forming a BASIS group may call Dan at 717-859-4777 or email dsteinman@hvmi.org. More information about BASIS may be found at www.hvmi.org.

Eighth Hope For Haiti Auction Planned BY ANN MEAD ASH
The Hope for Haiti Benefit Auction of Northern Lancaster County has been scheduled for Saturday, May 15, at the Hertzog Homestead Event Venue, 470 W. Metzler Road, Ephrata. Organizers have planned a day that will include pony rides, food, and an auction. The auction began several years ago when a group of neighbors centered around the common goal of helping those living in poverty to gain education and employment skills to help them become self-sustainable. According to Kristen Hertzog, organizer of the event, the auction will begin at 9 a.m. and continue until the last item is sold. Among the many pieces of merchandise that will go up for bids will be handmade quilts in a variety of sizes, lawn and garden supplies, antiques, collectibles, furniture, gift cards, baskets, and donated gently
used items. “We are still accepting donations of new items and financial gifts to offset the cost of the auction,” said Hertzog. Food that will be available for purchase will include chicken barbecue, salads, sub sandwiches, toasted cheeseburgers, pulled pork sandwiches, baked goods, and homemade doughnuts. Hertzog noted that extra attention has been paid to safety measures this year. “There’s natural social distancing due to the 23-acre size of the property (where the auction is held),” she explained. “We are taking precautions for safety for both the volunteers and the attendees,” she said, adding that masks are strongly encouraged. All the funds raised at the 2021 event will benefit two organizations that help provide education and business training for Haitian small business owners. Paradigm Shift is the education division of Haiti Transformation, which

The library offers books in French, Creole, and English and education programs in the area. The library, which is a Christian training center, has more than 1,000 volumes of books. Hertzog said auction organizers would like to help the library get to 5,000 volumes. The auction regularly brings together about 100 volunteers from diverse backgrounds who work to help bring education and business training to the people of Haiti. Hertzog estimated that about 1,000 people attend each year. Readers who would like more information may visit www.hopeforhaitibenefit.auction. Matthew 25 - More Than 20 Years Of Giving BY ANN MEAD ASH
Connie Shertzer, who has served as the general manager of Matthew 25 Thrift Shop for the last seven years, oversees a complete changeover in the store twice a year. “At the end of winter, we do a clean-out,” said Shertzer, who completed a changeover and officially reopened in late March. “When spring and summer are over, we do it again.” To aid in the process, Shertzer and 65 volunteers hold two days of half-price sales followed by a “fill-abag” event and finally a day when everything in the store is free. “What is left, we give to Unto in Mount Joy,” said Shertzer. When everything is gone, donations that have been stockpiled are brought out to restock the shop, which has a small housewares section along with clothing for men; women’s clothing in petites, plus, and regular sizes; children’s clothing from infant to big boys and girls; and accessories. A section in the back
serves as a bookstore and a place to display artwork to be sold. The purpose of the thrift shop, which was founded more than 20 years ago, is to help fund local organizations such as food pantries, Meals on Wheels programs, and Help the Fight. Funds are given to social service organizations and others that help those in need. “It has to stay in Lancaster County,” said Shertzer, who added that the shop has raised and given away $3 million since its inception. The name of the shop, which is run by a sevenmember board, is taken from the 25th chapter of the Book of Matthew in the Bible. Shertzer pointed out that the shop is nondenominational. “In order to make money, you have to have some nice things,” said Shertzer, who noted that gently used and new items are accepted at the shop during regular hours, which currently are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays. There are a number of items that cannot be accepted at

Before COVID-19 restrictions were enacted in March of 2020, a group of women was holding a monthly event called Story Marks. Story Marks focused on ladies gathering together for friendship and networking opportunities. Attendees also heard stories from women who have had experiences that others can learn from. This April, the first live and inperson Story Marks session in more than a year was held. Organizer Tracey Strohecker called the
evening “amazing.” Strohecker had an agenda prepared for the evening, but as she looked around at the gathering of 20, she decided to take a slightly different course. “I happened to say, ‘Why don’t we go around and introduce ourselves and say a little something?’” she recalled. “It turned into a safe place to talk, and they began sharing. It was a small, intimate group, and it was really nice.” This month’s Story Marks will be held on Thursday, May 20, at 6:30 p.m. at Thorn Hill Vineyards, 1945 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster. The featured speaker at the May event will be local leader and coach Gwen Schuit. Schuit has a nursing background, and she is currently

Science teachers who are using the tables are Lititz Elementary’s Dan Shelly, John Beck Elementary teacher Chad Felty, Stacie Bardell of John R. Bonfield Elementary, and Sarah Holton of Kissel Hill Elementary. Shelly noted that students are using the equipment to develop strategies for preventing stream erosion and then testing their ideas for effectiveness. Students build
model structures in a sand bed and then receive feedback by slowly releasing a measured amount of water. Raising or lowering a table end shows the effect of gradient on the force of the water runoff, with steeper slopes yielding faster flow. Students can simulate greater rainfall or snowmelt, increasing water volume and changing the level of impact. As the water moves to a lower level, the
students can see which barriers work to keep structures safe and where the water breaks through. Barbara Mobley, executive director of WEF, noted that the students can see a realworld parallel to the models. “In the past, Warwick High School students have put their science skills into practice helping the Lititz Run Watershed Alliance monitor water quality in the steam and its tributaries,” she said. “Where will STEM training
take these fifth-graders? Our hope is that giving Warwick students the extra tools they need … will make a difference and help each one reach their academic and career potential.” WEF has donated more than $2.3 million to enrich learning in Warwick schools and invest in the future of the Warwick community. Readers who would like more information about WEF may visit www.WarwickEF.org or email info@WarwickEF.org.

Library Schedules Outdoor Concert Series For many years, the Lititz Public Library has included music in its offerings with concerts held at the venue. This year, to provide a safe environment for attendees and musicians, concerts will be held outside in the library’s backyard at 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz. Weather permitting, five concerts will be held. The series will kick off at 6 p.m. on Thursday, May 27, with
Swing Street, a band that includes up to four musicians and is known for adding a dash of fun to mainstream jazz standards and jazz adaptations of popular tunes. Band members are Chuck Oettel on guitar, Pete Bainbridge on bass, Mike Truitt on piano, and vocals by Olivia Daugherty. On Thursday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m., Bravura Brass, a Lancaster brass quintet known for entertaining and

The band consists of tuba player Steven Holgate, trumpet players Jason Blome and Curtis Palmer, Jill Markley on the French horn, and Tony Deininger on the trombone. The library will host the Harrisburg Mandolin Ensemble on Saturday, July 24, at 1 p.m. The ensemble has its roots in 2011 when Tom Cook and Wade Yankey decided to explore new and eclectic material from Bach to bluegrass and more. The ensemble now includes Greg Rohrer on mandolin, Kevin Neidig on mandolin and octave mandolin and vocals, Cook on mandola and vocals, and Henry
Koretzky on mandocello and mandolin and vocals. The band plays original tunes along with songs that draw from jazz, swing, bluegrass, old-time, folk, and world music. On Wednesday, Aug. 25, at 6:30 p.m., Temple Avenue will bring swing and blues music to the venue, and on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 1:30 p.m., The Knotwork Band, a professional Celtic folk music trio, will perform traditional folk music along with original compositions. Band members include Victoria Visceglia on silver flute, wooden whistles, piano, percussion, and vocals; Kevin Long on guitar and fretless bass guitar, as well as vocals and mandolin; and Tommy Kochel on wooden flute, piccolo, high and low whistles, mandolin, and bodhráns, as
