New Survivor Center grows North Star’s Mission
BY JEFF FALK
Anew survivor center is a sign of progress for North Star Initiative (NSI). It also represents progress in the war on human trafficking.
North Star Initiative, a local, faith-based nonprofit focused on rescuing young women who are survivors of human trafficking, continues to settle into its new survivor center. After North Star raised funds for the project in 2021, the construction of the new building began in January of 2022 and was completed at the end of last year.
“Modern-day slavery is real,” said Janelle Esbenshade, North Star Initiative’s director of development. “It’s happening, and it’s happening in Lancaster County. It’s important to be educated in order to be able to help. Ultimately, we want to be able to help as many people as we can. We call them ‘survivors’ and don’t label them as ‘victims.’”
With Mickey’s Black Box, Rock Lititz puts its best foot forward
BY JEFF FALK
Fitted with incredible workspaces and cutting-edge technology, Rock Lititz is a place where world-famous artists come to fine-tune their acts. Due to the nature of that work, the public is not privy to everything that goes on at Rock Lititz.
But that’s where Mickey’s Black Box comes in. Of all the businesses that are open to the public there, few represent what Rock Lititz is all about more than Mickey’s Black Box.
Named for Australian Michael “Mickey” Tait, who helped Rock Lititz founders and brothers Roy and Gene Clair take their live-performance endeavor to new heights with his innovative staging and lighting techniques, Mickey’s Black Box is a world-class venue that’s offered to the public. Also available to the public at Rock Lititz, 100 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz, are Per Diem restaurant, Fetish Brewing Company, Hotel Rock Lititz and Lititz recROC.
See Rock Lititz pg 4
The new survivor center will allow North Star Initiative to help more survivors, more completely.
Built adjacent to North Star’s The Harbor, the survivor center houses North Star’s offices, administrative space, therapeutic areas and classrooms. The new building also allows The Harbor to concentrate more on the daily living needs of its survivors, increasing its resident capacity from 10 to 18.
“We’d really like The Harbor to just be a safe space,” said Esbenshade. “But we also had a desire to increase our capacity. We want our survivors to be able to trust again, to become whole again.”
North Star’s program takes three to 12 months to complete and is designed to support the physical, psychological, emotional and spiritual needs of trafficked women between the ages of 18 and 35.
Esbenshade said that North Star serves young women from across the United States and that some of its current survivors are from Lancaster County.
“ We get asked all the time, ‘Why don’t people just leave?’” said Esbenshade. “Sometimes the victim falls in love with their trafficker.”
Founded in 2010, North Star Initiative’s The Harbor is believed to be Lancaster County’s first restoration home for survivors of human trafficking. North Star Initiative, which is located in Lititz, created its own in-house curriculum based on human trafficking awareness, the teaching of coping skills and life skills training.
“ Without proper therapy, survivors aren’t really rescued; they’re not really freed,” said Esbenshade. “Human trafficking has been around for a long time, but only over the last 10 years has it been brought out and been talked about. The education piece is very important to us. Our survivors do have voices, and we want to make sure they use their voices in a positive way. But it takes healing and restoration.”

“There are similar programs, but to the best of our knowledge there is no one that does exactly what we do,” stated Brad Peterson, executive director with Power Packs Project, which delivers ingredients to make a nutritious meal to families in Lancaster, York, and Lebanon counties.
Peterson noted that last year, the organization provided nearly half a million meals made up of more than 500,000 pounds of food.
Power Packs was founded in 2009 by Joan Espenshade, who was volunteering at a Lancaster city
school when she saw some students lined up to get breakfast and others visiting the nurse’s office complaining of stomach aches because they had not had enough to eat over the weekend. “We give a recipe and all the ingredients for that recipe,” said Peterson, adding that the costs of the ingredients are included and that a recent meal cost $7.91 to make. “It’s part of our mission to empower families to show them they can create a healthy meal on a budget,” he said. The pack, which usually weighs 9 pounds or less, also includes staples such as cereal, canned goods, and fresh milk.

Salvation Army seeks to foster spirit for giving back
BY JEFF FALK
The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps’ mission is to do the most good. That includes financial aid for county students seeking to further their educations at college.
Recently, the Salvation Army Lancaster Corps awarded its annual Olga Ruth Stratton and Thomas E. Wolf scholarships to 20 seniors from 13 Lancaster County high schools. The students
formally accepted their scholarships at a special awards dinner on April 27 at Eden Resort and Suites, 222 Eden Road, Lancaster.
Recipients and their high schools were Nicole Chen, Penn Manor; Mina Cooper, Dayspring Christian Academy; Savannah Henschel, Warwick; Natalie Klecker, Anchor Christian Academy; Ethan Lin, Hempfield; Kieran McFall, Penn Manor; Caitlyn McGough, Penn Manor; Mer-
cyangelis Morillo, Columbia; Connor Nimmon, Hempfield; Luke Pagilia, Hempfield; Abigail Phillips, Conestoga Valley; Maximillian Ponton, Penn Manor; Tobias Reiff, Lancaster Mennonite; Heavynn Rodriguez, J.P. McCaskey; Savannah Stauffer, Ephrata; Alana Stoltzfus, Lancaster Mennonite; Hagen Supeck, Lampeter-Strasburg; Lily Troutman, Elizabethtown; Avante Webb, J.P. McCaskey; and Hanna Weller, Cocalico. Each student received $2,000 in scholarship monies.
“Our mission is to help people in need,” said Shady Boules, the operations and development manager for the local Salvation Army. “With the scholarships, our focus is
to help students and their families. Everyone is welcome to apply. If students need help to go to college, we’re there for them.”
To apply for the Salvation Army scholarships, students must be residents of Lancaster County, and they must be high school seniors with GPAs of 2.0 or higher who are going on to college and can demonstrate a financial need. After the students submit a 500word essay and are interviewed by a selection committee, the winners are chosen.
“ We believe a lot of students don’t have the confidence to go to college because of the financial responsibilities associated with it,” said Boules. “Going to college isn’t
cheap. We want to be part of the encouragement, the support. We believe in the next generation. We believe in education. And when we help these students, we hope that they will be motivated to give back to the community.”
Boules said that the scholarship’s number of applicants and number of recipients varies from year to year. But over the 24 years that the scholarship has been in existence, the Salvation Army has awarded hundreds of thousands of dollars to county students in need.
“ We see the need as being bigger every year,” said Boules. “People used to be able to afford college. We’re trying to secure donors
because we want to see it continue. When you see the impact it has on students, you know it’s worth it. You’re changing lives.”
The Salvation Army Lancaster Corps also helps with things like rent assistance, utility assistance, and social services and works closely with other community organizations to promote the greater good.
“The Salvation Army is here f or everyone, regardless of language, ethnicity or background,” said Boules. “We want people to support the Salvation Army and to be part of the movement.”

“I know there’s a lot of mystique surrounding the Rock Lititz campus,” said Mickey’s Black Box director of events and logistics Margaret Cooper. “When people come on campus, they think there are a lot of things going on here. The amount of good will that people have on this project is just so amazing. The longtime Lititz locals seem very grateful to have Rock Lititz as a neighbor. To some there’s still a little bit of lore around it.”
Developed by the Clair brothers, the 96-acre Rock Lititz campus is home to more than 30 businesses. The 30,000-square-foot Rock Lititz was established in 2014.
Over the last nine years, Rock Lititz has continued to evolve and grow. In 2018, Hotel Rock Lititz was opened to provide overnight lodging

On the average, Mickey’s Black Box hosts between two and four events each week.
“Quite simply, Mickey’s Black Box is an event space,” said Cooper. “The intention is to create a home for acts that are traditionally underappreciated. We’re all businesses that share space on the campus together. We provide space for up-and-coming talent to hone their skills. But we also want to be a community fixture.”
In the early 1960s, the Clair brothers, who are Lititz natives, put their passion for sound to good use at local dances and sporting events. Their big break came in 1966 when they were hired by Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons to produce sound for a concert at Franklin & Marshall College.
To meet an increasing need for rehearsal space in the liveevent industry, the Clair brothers purchased and developed 4,000 square feet of a factory building in Lititz, equipping it with world-class sound equipment and Tait’s creative staging and lighting techniques. Billy Joel was their first client.
“Because we’re so versatile and have so much going on, you’ve really got to see it for yourself,” said Cooper. “It’s very unique. We are a venue that far exceeds its own needs as far as compatibility goes. That’s awesome to have in your own backyard.”

Power Packs frompg 1
Originally, the program distributed food to schools in bulk, and volunteers assembled the packs in grocery bags for students. However, with the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, schools were closed, and when they reopened, volunteers were not allowed inside. “We started packing boxes in our warehouse,” said Peterson, who noted that school and church parking lots became pickup sites for parents. The situation changed the Power Packs distribution system permanently. Now, boxes are packed at the Power Packs Project location at 1915 Olde Homestead Lane, Lancaster, for distribution to schools and students each Wednesday and Thursday. The program runs 35 weeks during the school year, and an eight-week summer distribution will begin
Wednesday, June 21, and end Wednesday, Aug. 9.
Power Packs runs on volunteer power, clocking more than 700 volunteer hours provided by 475 individuals in the month of April. “We can always use more volunteers,” said Peterson, who noted some volunteers put in as many as 20 hours a week. The organization has a special need for volunteer drivers to deliver packs to schools and volunteers to distribute at schools. Peterson noted that for those tasks, it makes sense if the volunteers live in or near the districts receiving the delivery and doing the distribution. Current Lancaster County Power Packs distribution areas include a total of 66 schools located in the School District of Lancaster, Warwick, Manheim Township, Penn Manor, Hempfield,
Annual hymn sing planned
The seventh annual hymn sing is set for 3 p.m. on Sunday, May 21, in Good Shepherd Chapel at Lancaster Bible College (LBC), 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. Participants will include song leader and faculty member Bruce Gerlach, organist Frank Dodd, and
pianist Paul Thorlakson, chair of the LBC | Capital Music, Worship and Performing Arts Department. A quartet of voices and a brass ensemble will also be featured.
The hymn sing is free to attend, but tickets may be reserved at www.lbc.edu/events.
History Hike planned
Governor Dick Environmental Center, 3283 Pinch Road, Mount Gretna, will offer a History Hike on Sunday, May 21, at 1:30 p.m. Participants should meet at the Environmental Center. This 2-mile hike will take participants to 10 places of history within the park.
Attendees should bring water and be prepared for terrain that includes rocks and hills.
There is no fee, but preregistration is required by contacting 717-964-3808 or governordick@hotmail.com by providing a name and phone number.
Donegal, Cocalico, Columbia, and Lampeter-Strasburg. Most volunteer tasks require about a two-hour time commitment. Distribution and delivery volunteers are needed on Wednesdays and Thursdays. “Packers at the warehouse typically do two-hour shifts but if someone only has
an hour, that’s fine,” said Peterson, who added that groups of volunteers have come in during evenings and on weekends.
Readers who are interested in volunteering for the organization may visit www. powerpacksproject.org/volun teer or call 717-517-9220.

Veterans pension program posted
The Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA) reminds eligible veterans that they may qualify for a monthly pension through the state’s Amputee and Paralyzed Veterans Pension program. Pennsylvania veterans who qualify for the pension can receive $150 per month.
To qualify, applicants must meet several criteria. Applicants must have been a resident of Pennsylvania upon entering the military, have received honorable discharge or discharge under honorable conditions, have sustained a service-connected injury or incurred a disease resulting in the loss or loss of use of two or more extremities (arms/hands or legs/feet), and have a disability compensation rating of 40% or greater in each limb as determined and certified by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs.
To apply, Pennsylvania veterans should contact the county director of veterans affairs in the county where they reside. For more information about the DMVA Amputee and Paralyzed Veterans Pension Program, visit www. dmva.pa.gov and look under Pennsylvania Veterans for Veterans Benefits in PA.
