In 2018, Lititz resident Jennifer Martin began sharing her testimony in local churches. In 2018, Aaron’s Acres celebrated 20 years of providing socialization and recreation for children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with special needs. The nonprofit organization held camp at the Jewish Community Center in Lancaster until 2013. Starting in 2014, the program was hosted by the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park. In 2019, the six-week camp served 220 campers. For the past several years, Aaron’s Acres has been searching for a permanent home. Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, had looked at a number of county locations, but

Jennifer Martin (left), U.S. director for We Help Children, has worked with children in Guatemala and Haiti. In her new role with We Help Children, she will build relationships with area churches by giving her testimony and speaking about the organization.

Operating a business is a strenuous venture in the best of circumstances, and with the current economic climate, local entrepreneurs are being strained and stretched even more. But that has not stopped some tenacious Lancaster County residents from pushing forward with new or expanding businesses. LaundrE-town on Market in Elizabethtown is one such emerging endeavor. After more than a year of renovation and progress, the fully renovated, modern laundromat was slated for an April 1

grand opening, but state mandated closures postponed the final stages of completion. The essential business eventually opened successfully on May 1. “We started construction sometime around September of 2019 and faced many challenges,” explained company president Gretchen Rothstein. “Fast See Emerging Businesses pg 3

Paskoff noted that other plans for the cultural center include housing therapeutic alpacas in a barn area, along with sheep, goats, and chickens. Pleasant View also plans to expand a hydroponics program on the site. The farm property where Aaron’s Acres will be located offers additional possibilities to the organization. “We will have farm land to grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers,” said Paskoff, who sees the move as an opportunity to expand the Aaron’s

She noted that an aquatics center is planned for completion in 2023. With the new location placed on hold, the home base incorporated new procedures, including an online ordering app implemented earlier this year and a contactless pickup window. “We hope to open for online ordering and takeout in the next few weeks, Fisher said of the Lancaster city location, hinting at a new menu that will retain New Holland favorites and the company’s signature houseroasted coffee. “Our shop will have a similar design style to our New Holland location with a modern, unique twist. Uncertainty might be at an all-time high, but rising to the challenge and caring for the community is at the heart of these and countless other local businesses that are pushing forward to bring brighter days to Lancaster County.

Although the original plans had aimed at a May debut of Tied House, mandated closures have delayed the grand opening. With state regulations and uncertainty continuing to interrupt forward motion, the Tied House team will consider opening under a limited to-go menu, a small taste of what is to come. “We’d like the community to know we are thinking about them and missing our normal interactions at the taproom, explained Shirey. “They can still purchase beer and food from us on a takeout basis in Ephrata or purchase our products throughout Lancaster County. Another local favorite that needed to make adjustments was New Holland Coffee Company. During unprecedented closures, SCORE has played a vital role in the health of both existing and new small business ventures. “We have been helping our clients to navigate federal, state, and local loan and unemployment programs, explained certified SCORE mentor Joann Brayman. “ We are engaging our clients to evaluate their business models to see what will work under the emerging guidelines for reopening businesses. Samples are sent to a thirdparty reference lab for testing. Results are generally available in approximately two to five days and accessible on Patient First’s Patient Portal. If patients do not already have a Patient First Portal Account set up, they

will receive a temporary code allowing them to create one when they arrive for testing. For most insured patients, there is no out-of-pocket expense for COVID-19 testing. The visit will be submitted to patients’ insurance. Patient First accepts all major insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. For self-pay patients, there is a set cost plus a separate bill from the lab in some cases. The lab determines what, if anything, it bills the patient. Appointments are not needed for visits unrelated to COVID-19 testing. All Patient First centers have taken steps to provide a safe environment for patients and staff, including requiring all patients and staff to wear masks while inside the center, thoroughly disinfecting surfaces throughout the center at regular intervals, requiring frequent handwashing, and limiting visitors to only essential family members. To schedule an appointment at the Lancaster center, readers may call 717-925-2995. Updates about testing sites, instructions for making an appointment, and other information are available at www.patientfirst.com/covid -19-testing.

expecting her first child, however, and she did not think the timing was right. The Metcalfs interviewed other candidates, but they kept returning to Jennifer. They contacted her again, and she and her husband, Josh, prayed about the offer. In October 2019, Jennifer accepted the position. Jennifer’s work involves continuing to share her testimony, and she looks forward to speaking in area churches about her life and the mission of We Help Children. “A life that I thought was destroyed when I was a teenager God has restored, and He speaks through me,” said Jennifer, who noted that she is ready to work on building relationships between the ministry and local churches. She said We Help Children would especially like to build relationships with Spanish churches. She will also work to help to organize fundraisers, and she will visit Guatemala twice a year. Jennifer is a certified medical assistant who has worked at

Barshinger Cancer Center in Lancaster. Her connections to Guatemala began in her childhood. “I grew up going to Guatemala,” she recalled, noting that she has been there 10 times. “ W hen I was 10, (my family) moved to Guatemala for a summer,” said Jennifer, who explained that her father was a part-time missionary when she was a child. “(Guatemala is) where my heart is.” Jennifer has also done mission work in Haiti. “I (was in) Haiti … when I was 18 for a couple months,” she said. “I loved it there. I love mission work.” In 2017, Jennifer traveled to Guatemala with Donna Delp, a member of the We Help Children board, who has her own medical-based ministry called Impacting One Life at a Time. Jennifer was there to work alongside Donna for a week as a medical assistant. During that visit, Jennifer met a teenage girl, and the two began talking through a cellphone translator app. “She

had a story similar to mine, which included sexual abuse and going through a trying time of dealing with the emotions that come along with that,” said Jennifer. “We had a really deep conversation, and I shared my faith and how I came to faith.” Jennifer referred to the experience as getting a taste of what the Metcalfs do to help children. “My passion for (helping children) was lit,” she recalled. According to Jennifer, it was that encounter that made her aware of her connection to the mission of We Help Children. “I think that was a door that opened in my heart,” said Jennifer. “By sharing my testimony and raising support, (I can help them with) what they do in Guatemala (from) here (in the U.S.),” she added. Readers who are interested in asking Jennifer to speak at their church may email jennrmartin17@gmail.com. More information about We Help Children may be found by visiting www.wehelpchildren.org.

The keynote speaker will be Shannan Martin, author of “The Ministry of Ordinary Places.” “She is very engaging,” said Yoder. “Neighboring is her thing.” Doors for the luncheon will open at 10:30 a.m., and the luncheon will start at 11:30 a.m. Readers who would like more information about Bridge of Hope or the gala may visit https://lancaster.bridge ofhopeinc.org.

Sierra Club Awards Grants The Lancaster Group of the Sierra Club has awarded “green project” grants to eight Lancaster County organizations, each of which has shown a need for support of a venture that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure. With this latest round of awards, ranging up to $500 and announced on Earth Day, April 22, a total of 52 Lancaster County organizations have received green project grants over the past five years. Organizations receiving the grants, along with their projects, include Children’s Museum of Lancaster doing business as Hands-on House, purchasing plants for its Discovery Meadow and acquiring a potting shed with accessories; East Petersburg Sportsman’s Association, buying and delivering trees and creek-side plants and shrubs to replace dead, weak, or intrusive flora in its 11-acre preserve; and ELANCO Source Water

Collaborative, developing a native plant pollinator garden along a community park’s wooded nature trail. Recipients also include Historic Poole Forge Inc., expanding and improving its recently developed quarter-acre pollinator garden; Homefields Incorporated, purchasing native vegetation and a weed wrench for use in its current rain garden and the proposed extension of it; Hope United Methodist Church, Ephrata, installing an informational sign along the Ephrata-to-Warwick rail trail to direct and encourage trail users to visit its nearby native plant meadow and monarch butterfly pollinator garden; K-Prep Learning Center, developing an outdoor classroom and organic learning garden for use by students and their families; and Pathways - A Community Homeschool, establishing a pollinator field that includes native plants and wildflowers in Lancaster County’s 90-acre Brubaker Park. The proposals were evaluated

on criteria such as environmental objective, unique aspect of the project, quality of submission, and how the Sierra Club - Lancaster Group might be involved. Awarded once a year, the grants are funded primarily with money generated through the Lancaster Group’s annual Polar Bear 5K Trail Run/Hike. Charitable, educational or business organizations in Lancaster County that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet are eligible to apply for a grant of $500 or less, according to program rules. The deadline to apply for the next cycle of awards is Friday, March 26, 2021, and recipients will be announced on Earth Day, Thursday, April 22, 2021. Bridge of Hope will provide case management and connections to area resources the family may need. Yoder noted that many volunteers are not aware of how valuable their help can be. “We are really emphasizing that one of the gifts group members bring the families facing homelessness is social capital that they might not even know they have,” she said, explaining that social capital refers to connections within the community that can help meet the family’s specific needs. “Oftentimes Neighboring Volunteers don’t realize the assets they have access to because of who they know (in the area),” she noted. Both Metzler and Yoder told of instances when Neighboring Volunteers connected with dentists, mechanics, or others to provide services a family needed at little or no cost. One goal of Bridge of Hope is to move a family into housing within two months of entering the program. To reach that milestone, the organization partners with faith-based groups and landlords within a community. “We provide rental assistance on a decreasing

December. Metzler worked for Bridge of Hope for more than a decade, leaving her post in 2008 and returning to the organization and to Lancaster in late 2019. In her new role, she will handle some case management and train and coordinate local volunteer groups through churches and other faith groups, such as Bible studies and small groups. “I will be recruiting and training Neighboring Volunteers from local churches and matching them up with families (facing homelessness),” said Metzler, who explained that groups help to support families who are on the brink of homelessness. She shared that responsibilities are often divided with designated positions, including a group coordinator, members who help find housing, a child care coordinator, and a transportation coordinator. According to Edith Yoder, national executive director of Bridge of Hope, the volunteer groups are referred to as neighborhoods of support. “There’s a case manager and six to 10 volunteers from a neighboring church,” said Yoder, who noted that the volunteer group members are encouraged to get to know the head of the family they

Partnership Provides Meals Good Samaritan Services partnered with eight Phoenixville restaurants and seven Ephrata restaurants for Good Sam Restaurant Week, which was held from May 11 to 18. Prior to COVID-19, many individuals and groups would cook meals on-site at Good Samaritan shelters or deliver homemade meals. These practices are no longer allowed due to social distancing regulations, but many supporters have been delivering takeout meals to shelter facilities. During Good Sam Restaurant Week, supporters were encouraged to purchase takeout from local restaurants and have it delivered to the organization’s shelters. Restaurants providing takeout were featured to encourage donors and individuals to support their local economy while providing meals to participants in local shelters. Community members are invited to continue purchasing takeout from local restaurants

and having it delivered to Good Samaritan Services shelters throughout the month of May. Those who would like to participate can sign up at www. goodsamservices.org/2020/05/ good-sam-supports-local-bus inesses to reserve a day to deliver meals. Good Samaritan Services provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families experiencing homelessness. It offers emergency shelter, transitional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. Approximately 400 men, women, and children are served every year. Good Samaritan also offers many financial stability programs, job training programs, and family strengthening programs that holistically address the needs of its clients. Bailey Coach Disinfects First Responder Vehicles Bailey Coach, based in Spring Grove, celebrated and recognized its volunteers for disinfecting 500 first responder vehicles since April 7. A small ceremony was held at Bailey Coach on May 5. As part of its mission to give back to the community, Bailey Coach dedicated one of its specialized electrostatic sprayers to be used on Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. to disinfect first responder vehicles. The process to disinfect takes two to five minutes. The staff members who have been disinfecting the vehicles are volunteers from the Bailey Coach staff or their families. Bailey Coach plans to operate the free disinfecting to serve first responders in York,

Adams and Lancaster counties as long as the disinfecting treatments are needed to keep the area’s first responders healthy due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Bailey Coach is a transportation company which diversified in mid-March when 99% of its transportation reservations had been canceled. Now employees travel to area lifesustaining businesses to provide disinfecting services. Staff members disinfect an average of 2.5 million square feet of space for 50 businesses each week, and on average, they are able to disinfect 15,000 square feet of space per hour with electrostatic sprayers. These sprayers are commonly used in airplanes, cruise ships, hospitals and meat packing facilities.
