Concert In Park To Highlight Memorial Day By Ann Mead Ash

More than a year ago, Lititz merchant Gaylord Poling contacted the board of the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) to suggest that the group play a concert in Lititz Springs Park near Memorial Day. The event would revive a tradition from the past. Poling teamed up with Stephen Armbruster of a local bank, and the two worked with representatives of the William and Jemima Brossman Charitable Foundation and the Irene Weidman Charitable Trust to sponsor a concert scheduled for the Saturday prior to Memorial Day 2018. “ We didn’t get to play in the park because the weather was really wet,” lamented Mary Ellen Davis, LSO board chair.

“It was humid and threatening rain.” The concert was moved to the Warwick High School (WHS) auditorium, where the musicians played to a standing-room-only audience. “ We are hopeful this year (the weather) will be a little bit better,” said Davis of the free LSO concert that is planned for Saturday, May 25, at 7 p.m. in Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz. The concert, which will feature patriotic music, a pyrotechnics display, and wellknown show tunes, will be held in the band shell at the back of the park. Should there be inclement weather, the event will move to the WHS auditorium, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz. Davis noted that a change in venue would be announced by Thursday, May 23. Author from pg 1 acquainted with his life. He showed snow-scene pictures of his log home in Colorado, telling the students, “There’s a lot of snow, and it doesn’t melt fully until August. It’s a very beautiful place.” Avi also shared photos of the wildlife he often sees near his home, along with pictures of his wife, children, grandchildren, and dog. Avi continued by introducing students to his family of origin, including his twin sister, followed by a photo of his classmates in elementary school. The majority of the presentation focused on Avi’s development as a writer, beginning with his love of reading as a child. He noted that he liked to read science fiction, adventure, and mystery, including the Tom Swift and the Hardy Boys series. Avi shared his earliest piece of

That Sometimes Happen,” which was also published. Avi told students that it generally takes him about a year to write a book and another year to complete the publishing process. “When you get an idea, you have to work it out and shape it,” he told the students. As an example, he shared the evolution of the first line of his book “The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle.” “The last (version) reads better (because) it’s much more interesting,” he said. “The more you rewrite, the better your writing is. Rewriting is what writing is really about.” WEF provides grants which enrich education opportunities for students in the Warwick School District. writing, which he said was a script for a radio show about police and robbers in space. “The word ‘scene’ is spelled incorrectly four different ways (because) I was a pretty bad speller,” noted Avi, who added that it was not until he attended the Elisabeth Irwin School in Manhattan that he decided to dedicate his life to writing. Avi shared a photo of one of his papers dotted with myriad corrections he received from a teacher. He explained that the teacher suggested Avi focus on shorter papers with fewer errors. “That’s when I decided to become a writer, because I wanted to show that I could write,” Avi said. The author, who eventually published more than 80 books, attended the University of Wisconsin, where, as a senior, he won a contest for his one-act play called “A Little Rebellion.” In 1960, the play was published in a magazine. Later, when Avi was working as a librarian, he put together stories he told his oldest son in a book called “Things

Inviting their customers and the community to a June 1 open house at the new location of JM Lapp Plumbing and Heating in New Holland are (from left) Carl Devine, HVAC sales; general manager Jason Ranck; and CEO Matt Lapp. that was in disrepair after being empty for more than 10 years. The majority of the building was demolished in June 2018. Today, two separate buildings remain with approximately 47,000 square feet of space combined. JM Lapp occupies the 20,000-square-foot building at the east end of the property while the two-story building along Brimmer Avenue is still under construction and will eventually be available for lease later this year. JM Lapp majority owner Matt Lapp started the business in 2006 with a Chevy Astro van while based in Intercourse. As the business grew, JM Lapp moved to three different locations from 2008 through 2013 before relocating to Bird-in-Hand. Within five years, the company outgrew that space as well. The new location allows for future expansion as needed. JM Lapp Plumbing and Heating specializes in residential and light commercial plumbing and HVAC installations and service. Water treatment and central vacuum systems are also available. The company also has a wide variety of parts and supplies available for sale. According to warehouse manager Reuben King, the company currently has 18 trucks on the road and 38 employees. The office and retail store are open on Mondays through Fridays from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, readers may call 717-768-0484 or visit www.jmlappplumbing.com.

Avi’s visit was made possible by the Warwick Education Foundation (WEF), which sponsors the One School, One Book, One Community program. When Avi addressed Lititz Elementary School students in fourth through sixth grades on the morning of May 9, he began by answering what he termed “crucial questions” from students. Among those questions were “What inspired you to be a writer?” “I love to read … and when you read a lot sometimes you like to think that you can write,” said Avi. Following the question-andanswer segment, Avi gave a multimedia presentation designed to help the students become better

A reprise of the program presented last year for Memorial Day, the hourlong performance will feature patriotic poems and songs such as “America the Beautiful, “God Bless America, “Imagine, “In Flanders Fields, and “You Raise Me Up. Jim Johnson, Susquehanna Stage Company’s artistic director, created the program. The Susquehanna Stage Company was founded 11 years ago in Marietta by community members who shared a passion for musical theater. Following the concert, all are invited to enjoy refreshments prepared by the 10 Episcopal churches in Lancaster County.

Performers from Susquehanna Stage Company will present a patriotic program of music and poetry at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Lancaster on Sunday, May 26. Davis said that the concert will begin with the national anthem, and patriotic selections will include some Sousa marches, “God Bless America,â€? and the “1812 Overture,â€? which will feature fireworks in place of the cannon shots in the song. Davis added that audiences should recognize many of the selections. “This is what we call a pops concert, so we will play a lot of show tunes. It is music that everyone will know and sing along to,â€? she said. Among the songs that will be included in the 75-minute concert will be tunes from “Evita,â€? “A Chorus Line,â€? and “Les MisĂŠrables.â€? The 50-member orchestra that

Davis noted that LSO has been performing for more than 70 seasons and that she believes the group is the oldest continuously operating arts organization in Lancaster County. “We have put forth a season every year since 1947, Davis said. Davis said that LSO is thankful to the community members who wanted to make an oldfashioned concert in the park available to local residents in celebration of Memorial Day. “We are thrilled to have someone like Gaylord who understands and appreciates symphonic music and the value to

serve those who have suffered particularly following an emergency and works to act as Christ’s hands and heart through prayer and practical help.

the community of giving back, said Davis, who hopes many Memorial Day concerts are held in the future. “We would like to make this a tradition, said Davis. “This is a nice evening out in late spring. Lititz Springs Park will be open prior to the event for attendees who wish to bring a picnic to enjoy before the show. Davis shared that the musicians will be rehearsing in the park the afternoon before the concert and eating a picnic dinner before performing. Warwick Teams Compete In Post-Season Play by Vaughn Brown

It was a week of familiar faces for the Warwick volleyball team as they squared off with Section One foes Penn Manor and Hempfield over the course of three matches, two of which helped to determine the 2019 L-L League Championship. The week began with a semi final matchup against the Comets where the Warriors prevailed 3-0 and advanced to a championship showdown with Hempfield with the Black Knights winning the League title 3-1. Warwick then finished out the week by beating Penn Manor again, this time in the opening round of the District Three tournament via a 3-1 result. Due to a scheduling conflict between Penn Manor and Lancaster Mennonite, the two schools played their quarterfinal match last Monday with the winner, which turned out to be the Comets, immediately facing Warwick in the semis. In that match with Penn Manor the Warriors maintained control through most of the

action and came out on top with scores of 25-16, 25-21, and 25-19. Noah Miller and Chad Meeder controlled the net with 11 and 10 respective kills to go with Kameron Brenneman’s two blocks while Connor Baer had 32 assists and libero Mateo Chacon recorded 18 digs and two aces. Wednesday’s match with Hempfield marked the fourth time this year the two teams have met with Warwick defeating the Knights in a Section One tiebreaker the last time out. The title went the Hempfield this time, however, as they battled for an intense 25-23, 25-21, 27-29, 26-24 victory. Adam Kurtz (14 kills, 4 blocks), Miller (13 kills), Foster Lobb (13 kills, 21 digs) and Meeder (12 kills) stood tall at the net while Baer put up 47 assists and had four blocks and Chacon had 24 digs. Suffering a bit of a letdown following the intensity of their loss to the Knights, Warwick let the Comets come back from a 15-11 deficit to win the opening game 25-20 but pulled

together and rallied to finish them 2519, 25-23, and 25-13 in order to advance to the District Three quarterfinals opposite State College. Miller recorded 17 kills and three aces while Meeder blocked two and Chacon had 15 digs SOFTBALL Warwick’s softball team battled eventual L-L League runner-up

through the first quarter, the Warriors tallied two in the second to enter halftime down, 5-2. Red Lion’s fast break offense proved too much for Warwick to handle, however, as the Lions enjoyed a 6-2 goal advantage in the second half. A hat trick from Carter Davis led the charge for the Warriors while Conor Adams added one as well. The loss ended Warwick’s season at 9-7. BASEBALL Trailing by five runs in their final at bat, the baseball team had one last gasp against Lampeter-Strasburg in the semifinal game of the League championship. With only two hits up until that point in time and with no outs, Jeff Kline (1-3) sent a 1-2 pitch

into right field for a single that allowed John Seibert to advance to third after opening up the seventh inning with a walk. A strikeout by Ethan Heller brought Evan Rohrbach (1-3) to the plate but Pioneer pitcher Braedon Karpathios got him to ground into the 6-4-3 double play that ended any hope at a comeback. Jackson Davies took the loss for Warwick giving up four runs on seven hits over five innings with three strikeouts and two walks before Rohrbach came on in relief in the six and gave up a run on two hits in one inning. Both teams were scoreless through three innings before L-S plated one in the fourth, three in the fifth, and one more in the sixth.

successful in each is very impressive. It really helps that Lily, Leah, and Meghan have each other,” he continued. “They push each other at practice and make each other better. They are each other’s biggest fans and each other’s biggest competition.” In Friday’s opening event, the 3200, Kate Dickow also set a new record when she obliterated her own L-L League mark of 10:37.90, set May 11 in the League meet. Finishing second, Dickow clocked in at 10:28.02 shaving almost 10 seconds off her time, while Anna Martin finished 13th in 11:20.42. The duo also ran the 1600 with Dickow (5:00.2) finishing in seventh place and Martin (5:3.35) coming in 20th. “Kate is awesome, what a no-nonsense kid who works like a champion every day,” added Daecher. “She is one of the most dedicated athletes I have ever had. From her training to her diet she is 100 percent all in and she does everything right. I loved that she was able to do so well this weekend. I think she will do even better at states.” Also medaling for Warwick was Juliette Delmotte who went 37-05 in the triple jump on Friday to finish fourth, while Emily Skidmore finished 11th in the 300 hurdles after missing the cut in the 100 hurdle semifinal heat with a time of 17.03. Warwick’s boys recorded 31 points during their competition to finish fifth overall in the team standings while crowning one champion on the weekend. Nate Good crushed his personal best in the high jump by clearing 6-8 on his final attempt after already locking up gold with a 6-6 while Christian Hess cleared 6-0 to finish ninth. Good

also placed 13th in the pole vault with a height of 12-06. “Nate Good’s performance was nothing less than magical,” commented Daecher. “Nate’s best jump before this weekend was 6-4, when he cleared 6-6, he was ecstatic.” With a little urging from his jumps coach, Joe Hallowell, Good had the bar raised another two inches. Although he bumped it on the way down, the bar remained in place and in Daecher’s words, “After that it was nothing but pure jubilation.” The relays again proved fruitful to the Warriors as they medaled twice in Saturday’s races. Jacob Smith, Noah Martin, Jeremy Bell, and Connor Shields finished second in the 3200 with a time of 7:56.01 and Sean Badessa, Ryan Fegley, Hess, and Gurby Marcellus took fourth place in the 400 when they clocked a 43.01, while Connor Shields, Martin, Smith, and Fegley finished 12th in the 1600 with a 3:33.28. Martin (9:44.38) and Fegley (22.41) also earned medals in the 3200 and 200, respectively, with both finishing in seventh place, while Shields (1:57.65) and Smith (2:01.78) finished fifth and 14th in the 800, and Nick Coomer (48-09) took ninth in the shot put. Meanwhile, three athletes bowed out in the semi final heat of their respective events with Marcellus (11.160) agonizingly close to the cut of 11.159 in the 100 along with Fegley (11.18), while Tanner Haines (15.65) just missied the cut of 15.35 in the 110 hurdles.

The Warriors’ Adam Martin maneuvers against Red Lion’s Zach Mentzer during last Tuesday’s District Three Class AAA firstround match at Red Lion.

Warwick only had one base runner reach scoring position before the seventh when Seibert walked in the fourth inning and then reached second base on a wild pitch with two outs. Heller’s subsequent strike out ended the inning. With the loss, Warwick now enters the District Three Class 6A championships as the number four seed and faces fifth seeded Manheim Township on Thursday in the quarterfinals after each team received a first-round bye. TRACK After winning the L-L League crown on May 11, the girls’ track team continued its amazing run on the 2019 season, claiming the District Three team title at Shippensburg University this past weekend while setting some records along the way. Scoring 75 points, the ladies outpaced second place finishers and fellow L-L competitor Conestoga Valley which came in at 66 points. The historical day came on Saturday when both the 400 and 1600 relay teams raced to victory and placed their marks on the record books. Leah Graybill, Emily Williamson, Meghan Quinn, and Lily Palacio-Lewis finished the 400 with a time of 47.44 which ended the run of CD East’s seven-year mark of 47.58. Later, in the 1600, Jessica Williamson, Quinn, Emily Williamson, and Graybill bested Harrisburg’s fouryear time of 3:53.03 by nearly a second when they clocked in at 3:52.39. In the 3200, the team of Aubrey Williamson, Caitlyn Wagner, Anna Martin, and Emily Williamson finished in eighth place with a time of 9:41.92. “It was great to see the girls get gold in the 4x100,” stated head coach Alex Daecher. “That is the race they have spent the most time on and it has really paid off. The 4x400 was a nice surprise. It is a race we haven’t really ran much this year with our “A team” and it was nice that they were able to put it together on the big stage (Districts).” It was Warwick’s trio of sprinters, however, that helped set the stage when Palacio-Lewis (12.02), Graybill (12.03), and Quinn (12.14) blasted by the competition in the 100 for a spectacular 1-2-3 finish with PalacioLewis battling through a nagging foot injury to claim gold Graybill (24.74) and Quinn (25.48) also competed in the 200 where the finished in first and fourth place, respectively. Daecher recognizes what the ladies bring to the table, stating, “Leah is an exceptional athlete. To be able to master all those races and be so

The 31st annual Lancaster Senior Games, held May 6 to 10, had another record-breaking year for attendance with a total of 1,004 participants and more than 335 volunteers. According to organizer Lisa Paulson of the Lancaster County Office of Aging, this was the first time that participation numbers broke the 1,000 mark. “People are having fun, and they just love doing it,” remarked committee member Sandy Hess in regards to the record-breaking participation. “The whole idea is to get anybody 55 and up to keep moving. And it’s not just physical; it’s about using your mind, too.” The bulk of the events took place at Spooky Nook Sports, with shuttle buses running to events held at other locations, including the Lancaster YMCA, Amos Herr Park, Hempfield High School, Evergreen Golf Course, Leisure Lanes, Buchmiller Park, Overlook Golf Course, and Rocky Springs Lanes. Darts, bocce, and cornhole were among the most popular events, with more than 300 registrants each. Hess, who has been volunteering on the Senior Games committee for more than 20 years,

the 80- to 84-year-old division and also participated in bocce, ladder golf, shuffleboard, basketball, and the soccer penalty kick. “I love all of the games,” said Risser. “I love water volleyball too, but they don’t have that yet.” Formerly of New Holland, Risser said that it was when he moved into Brethren Village in 2007 that he really became active in recreational sports. He does a lot of running, goes to the exercise room on a daily basis, and has been participating in the Senior Games for at least eight years. Alan Ruby of Akron and Barry Lynch of Lancaster took first and second place, respectively, in the 85- to 89-year-old division for horseshoes. This was not the first time that Ruby and Lynch had contended against each other for the championship in horseshoes, and yet: “We’re still friends,” said Ruby with a laugh. Neither Ruby nor Lynch practices horseshoes throughout the year, but they both work out regularly at a local athletic club where they are part of the Silver Sneakers program. Ruby remarked, “I just love the people here and the fellowship that we have. It’s all about the people.” To learn more about the Akron resident Alan Ruby (left) won first place and Barry Lynch Lancaster County Senior Games, readers may visit earned second place in the 85- to 89-year-old age division for the horseshoes competition on May 7 during the Lancaster Senior Games. www.LancSeniorGames.org.

noted that organizers adjust the event offerings from year to year according to what people seem to be interested in. “Every year we tweak something to make it work a little better,” said Hess. For instance, bridge is no longer offered due to waning interest, but now there is a pinochle tournament. Sometimes event demonstrations are scheduled into the week to test the waters before adding something to the official competition list for the next year. New additions for 2019 included ladder golf, a Nook exercise sampler, and Pilates, as well as a rock climbing demonstration with an opportunity to climb. Volunteers begin meeting monthly in September each year to plan and continue the planning process right up until the events launch in May. “To me it’s rewarding, and I think it is to everybody who’s doing it or we wouldn’t be doing it, because we all volunteer,” said Hess. Living Ministries Prepares To Open The Point The Point @ Doneckers, a 62,000-square-foot space located at 409 N. State St., Ephrata, that is currently known as the Doneckers Building, will house two churches, a youth ministry, and other ministries, in addition to a few businesses. “Living Ministries is the umbrella,” explained Living Ministries executive director David Knowles. Under the umbrella will be New Beginnings Church, an organization with roots in Akron, which has been meeting at the Doneckers Building under different leadership for about five years. “They were an existing church renting this space,” said Knowles. Meanwhile, Living Ministries was looking for a permanent home that was centrally located for the Friday Night Skate and a church called The Living Room. “We found this building,” recalled Knowles, who shared that the ministry purchased the building at what he called “a phenomenal price” in April 2018. Since then, Knowles, who became lead pastor of New Beginnings in September 2018, has been working with associate pastors Brad Vater and Nelson Sepulveda, along with church members, to renovate the building. New Beginnings Church, which

Knowles said observes a more traditional style of worship, currently meets in the building on Sundays at 9:30 a.m. for coffee with a service at 10 a.m. Living Ministries, which was founded by Knowles, grew out of a youth outreach called the Friday Night Skate. “We had been going from parking lot to parking lot at churches and building skate park ramps for youths to use,” recalled Knowles. The Friday Night Skate is currently meeting monthly in Ephrata, but the gathering will meet on Friday evenings at 7 p.m. in a designated area of The Point when the building is completed. The Living Room is the second church that meets at The Point @ Doneckers. The Living Room developed when Knowles and his associates were searching for a church setting for youths who frequented the Friday Night Skate and their parents. “The Living Room is a nontraditional church setting that meets on Monday evening,” said Knowles. The service begins with supper at 6:30 p.m., followed by worship. “It’s very conversational,” he said. “We move the chairs and put them in circles, and we go through questions.” The two churches and the youth outreach will be the anchors for

The Point @ Doneckers, but Knowles and company have much more planned for the site. “Half will be businesses, and half will be ministries,” explained Knowles, who noted that TNT Ministries and The Refuge, an addiction recovery ministry, will have offices in the building. Businesses will include a dance company, a retail store of handcrafted items, a café, and a children’s play space. Living Ministries hopes to have the building completed and all the tenants moved in by June 1, 2020, but New Beginnings and The Living Room are already meeting in the downstairs space and some of the business owners hope to have their enterprises in the building soon. Readers who would like to know more about The Point may visit www.tlrephrata.com.

Triathlon Class from pg 1 hold a free seminar on how to train safely and more fully for the event. The seminar, dubbed Triathlon Training, Tips, and Transitions: Getting Started Safely, will be held at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, on Monday, June 10, at 6 p.m. Murphy, a doctor with UPMC Pinnacle, which is a sponsor of the triathlon, will focus on training techniques with the goal of minimizing injury risk and maximizing the rewards of training effectively and safely. The rec center’s triathlon requires participants to swim 300 meters in the outdoor pool, bike 15.8 miles through the farmland surrounding Lititz, and run 3.1 miles. “Dr. Murphy thought it would be great to have a clinic to speak about triathlon training and tips and how to start safely,” explained Ababou. “We want to send a message that you still have time to prepare and train for the event.” Ababou noted that Murphy will include information to help participants move smoothly from one activity to the next. “People need to know what you need to have to swim, bike, and run,” he said, noting that helmets are required and that participants should consider that they may need goggles, a swim cap, bike shoes, sunglasses, water bottles, sunscreen, and more. Knowing how to handle the transitions from swimming to biking to running is important

too. Ababou noted that he believes participants who drink enough water when cycling will be safer when they run. Immediately following the seminar, those who attended will have the opportunity to join the Lititz recCenter Triathlon Training and Running Club, which Ababou oversees. Triathlon activities range from sprint distances to Ironman events. Novice triathletes may want to start with a sprinttype event like the Lititz recCenter adult triathlon. Proper training, commitment, and nutrition are essential to accomplishing a sprint before moving on to more challenging triathlons. Organizers of the triathlon encourage participants to sign up in teams, so that families and friends can enjoy the event together. The minimum age to take part in the event is 16, but Ababou said that younger people may complete the swimming portion for a parent. The rec center has written to Lancaster County swim teams to apprise them of this opportunity. Teams made up of employees from local businesses or fellow church members are encouraged to participate as well. Ababou noted that employers are welcome to sponsor employees in the event. Readers who would like more information may visit www.lititzrec.com. Individuals who have questions may call 717-626-5096, ext. 239, or email SimonAbabou@lititzrec.com.

Elizabeth St. The Bainbridge Band will perform selections in honor of all veterans. Afterward, the assembly will move to the cemetery at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 11 N. Queen. St., for a similar observance. The American Legion Post 809 annually sponsors a Memorial Day Service of Remembrance immediately following the conclusion of the parade in the Maytown Square. Donegal High School teacher Justin Neideigh, who coordinates Veterans Day programs at the school, will be the main speaker. The program will also include musical selections by the Bainbridge Band and the Donegal Intermediate School chorus and a bagpipes selection by Michael Luckenbill. All members of the community are invited to participate in aspects of the Maytown Memorial Day observance. Post and Auxiliary members encourage area residents to fly the American flag for Memorial Day weekend. For more details, readers may search for “Maytown Memorial Day Parade on Facebook.

in the military. “I can’t give up on our veterans, remarked Gutshall. “And I’m dedicated to Maytown because I was born here. The Auxiliary - which Gutshall noted is 65 members strong - supports veterans at the Lebanon, Coatesville, and Southeastern VA hospitals in various capacities, including sending monetary donations, clothing, and other supplies as needed. Auxiliary members crochet blankets for veterans at Rheems Nursing Home and Paramount Senior Living. Members also deliver care packages to local veterans who are ill or otherwise in need. The parade will stage on North King Street beginning at 3 p.m., with the procession kicking off promptly at 4 p.m. This year’s grand marshal will be James Embly, a longtime resident of Maytown. The Maytown Memorial Day Parade Committee is encouraging community groups, family units, and individuals not currently signed up to participate in the parade to consider being part of this year’s parade. For instance, children in the neighborhood could form a bicycle group, decorate their bikes, and ride in the parade as a unit. All groups must register in advance, and any interested groups or individuals may do so by emailing mrguinivan@comcast.net. Prior to the start of the parade,

Students from Lebanon Valley College (LVC), Annville, along with an LVC alumnus and two faculty advisers, recently completed a week-long service learning trip to the Dominican Republic. During the trip, LVC volunteers taught English to elementaryage students in a public school each morning and in the afternoons served in two after-school learning centers established by Outreach360, an organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities to underserved children in Latin America. Local students include Samantha Machin of Lititz. Machin is a graduate of Warwick High School and is pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood education.

“Typically, there are about 800 singers with up to 5,000 (people) in attendance in the Great Auditorium. Really, (there’s) nothing like it elsewhere. (It’s) very inspiring,” said Memorial United Methodist Church (UMC) music director Tom Berdos, speaking about the Ocean Grove Choir Festival in Ocean Grove, N.J. At least that many people are expected to attend the 65th annual festival on Sunday, July 14, especially considering that Ocean Grove Camp Meeting Association, which hosts the festival, is celebrating its 150th year in 2019. “It’s an event dedicated to the glory of God, (a) very unique choral event, as well as a unique spiritual event,” Berdos remarked. “In addition to the large group on choir festival day, there are the regional rehearsals where people can meet and enjoy other singers in their area. People often participate for many years. It becomes a very special annual event.” Memorial UMC, 101 S. Hess St., Quarryville, is one of those regional rehearsal sites. Rehearsals will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesdays from May 29 to July 10. Folks who plan to participate in the festival choir are invited to attend as many rehearsals as possible. “The more you attend, the better prepared you will feel for the festival,” Berdos said. The theme for the festival is “On Christ the Solid Rock,” and the 10 selected anthems reflect that theme. These are “God of Ages, God Eternal” by Thomas Juneau; “Great Is Thy Faithfulness,” arranged by Nathan Carter; “Lift Thine Eyes to the Mountains” from Mendelssohn’s “Elijah”; “Pilgrim’s Chorus” from Richard Wagner’s “Tannhauser”; “At the Name of Jesus” by Rene Clausen; “I Believe” by Mark Miller; “Jacob’s Ladder,” arranged by Calvin Hampton; “No Time” by Susan Brumfield; “The Ground” by Ola Gjeilo; and “Upon This Rock” by John Ness Beck. Choir members are expected to purchase their own music from a specified publisher. Attire has been specified for singers. Otherwise, there is no cost to participate in the festival or to attend rehearsals. Berdos will lead the rehearsals, and his wife, Deborah, will serve as rehearsal accompanist. Berdos is an accomplished director and,

in 2014, he was a guest conductor at the Ocean Grove Choir Festival. “When I started this position (at Memorial UMC) in January, several of the choir members knew me from my conducting there,” Berdos said. He noted that about 15 singers from Memorial are planning to participate in the festival. “We are spreading the word around the county and welcome any (number) of singers,” he added. Folks who would like to learn more about the Ocean Grove Choir Festival may visit www.oceangrove.org/choirsingers. Berdos asks that anyone who will attend the regional rehearsals at Memorial UMC email him at tom@quarryville.church so that he can prepare the rehearsal space.

On May 15, Northwest Emergency Medical Services (NWEMS) presented Robert C. Stirling Educational Scholarships to two students during Manheim Central High School’s (MCHS) awards ceremony for graduating seniors. The ceremony took place at Manheim Central Middle School. The scholarships are offered each spring through the Stirling family and NWEMS, which the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association merged with in 2013. A committee of NWEMS and Stirling family representatives selects the recipients each year. The $1,000 educational scholarship is named in memory and honor of Bob Stirling, who was known for his enthusiasm for the town and community of Manheim, where he lived and worked. Stirling owned an insurance business, was active in many community and civic activities, and was a lifetime member of the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association. Stirling’s interest in the ambulance service began when he assisted a volunteer ambulance crew at an accident that had occurred in front of his home on East High Street. On the crew that day was Clarence “Mike” Graham, one of the ambulance association’s founding members, who asked Stirling if he would like to ride along and assist with the transport of the patient. That invitation led to more than 30 years of service for Stirling with the ambulance association.

After Bob’s passing in June 1994, his family and the Manheim Veterans Memorial Ambulance Association created an educational scholarship for residents of the Manheim Central community who are pursuing a career in the medical field. The first scholarships were awarded in 1995, and NWEMS proudly continues the tradition today. The 2019 recipients are MCHS seniors Brittany Benner and Savannah Heisey. Brittany is the daughter of Loren and Amy Benner. At MCHS, she was captain of the varsity girls’

“Cause For Paws” Will Support UDS Service Dogs “People love puppies,” remarked Lori Breece, UDS Service Dogs program manager. Breece hopes that a love for puppies, dogs in general, and service dogs in particular will inspire many people to participate in Cause for Paws, a 5K Fun Run, Walk, and Wheelchair Roll that will be held on Saturday, June 8, at 8 a.m. at HACC Central Pennsylvania’s Community College Lancaster Campus, 1641 Old Philadelphia Pike, Lancaster. “We are determining whether we will continue holding the

event,” Breece said, noting that a successful event would have 200 entrants. “We’re looking at other opportunities (for fundraising).” Cause for Paws has been designed to appeal to people with a range of abilities. The entire course is paved, and because it is located entirely on HACC’s campus on a weekend, there will be no traffic. “It’s good for families and safe,” Breece commented. Awards will be given to the people who complete the course the fastest, but there will be other activities available that morning. A Zumba warm-up will be offered at 7:30 a.m. Face painting will be

Attendees will be able to meet the new ambassador dog, Nova, and her owner, Jennifer King. Beginning in July, the pair will venture into the community twice a week to introduce folks to UDS Service Dogs and recruit clients and sponsors. King and Nova will be available for lunch-and-learn events, presentations, and other interactions. “We’re trying to put ourselves out in the community more,” Breece explained. “That will help us build our mobility client list.” UDS Service Dogs is primarily in the business of providing trained canines for people with mobility disabilities and autism, Breece said. “The facility dog list is really growing,” added program coordinator Kristy Smith. Currently, 24 puppies and young dogs are in training to serve an individual or to serve in schools or retirement homes. One of the most recent to enter the program is Murphy, a 9-week-old black Labrador who was named in memory of the late radio personality Jerry Murphy. The puppy is slated to be part of the BARKS (Benefit, Assist, Rehabilitated, Knowledge, and Service) program at CI Moshannon Valley, a federal incarceration facility. There, he will be cared for and trained by inmates, and UDS Service Dogs staff members will visit and receive reports. When Murphy returns at age 1, he will be assessed for physical condition and ability. If

UDS Service Dogs program manager Lori Breece (left) and volunteer Susan Vollmar interact with 9-week-old Murphy, who is entering a program that trains canines to provide support to individuals with mobility disabilities or autism. he is of a good size, he may be used to assist an individual with balance, Breece said. If he has any health quirks, Murphy will be trained as a facility dog. The cost to train a service dog is approximately $25,000 over two years. Ideally, sponsors are found to cover large chunks of the costs. Going forward, however, Breece wants to offer sponsorships for the smaller things that the Cause for Paws supports. A dozen puppies are brought into the program each year, and they need food bowls, leashes and collars, food, treats, and three vests each year as

they grow. Veterinary care for the animals includes spay/neuter surgeries, checkups, and medication for fleas, ticks, and heartworms. “We’re always looking for new sponsors and volunteers,” Breece said. Volunteer orientation is held once a month. Interested individuals may call Breece at 717-715-8753. To register for Cause for Paws, readers may visit www.udservices.org/paws.
