Lititzis easy on the eyes. Lititz is pleasing to the nose. And do you know what else Lititz is? Delicious.
Taste of Lititz celebrates all things culinary in Lititz, highlighting the locale’s smells and flavors and tastes.
This year’s version of the glorified block party will unfold on Friday, June 2, from 5 to 9 p.m. The downtown business district, or at least three blocks of it, will be closed to car traffic and opened to the taste buds.
During that expanded happy hour, East Main Street from North Broad Street to North Water Street will be partitioned off, and tables will be set up to allow visitors to sample all the delectable wares that downtown Lititz has to offer. The
event, which is organized by and sponsored by Venture Lititz, is free to attend, and participants are encouraged to indulge their expanding palates.
“I always try to rotate where I go downtown,” said Venture Lititz executive director Rebecca Branle. “When I’m with someone, I’m always trying to introduce locals to something new. We have so many cool eateries. I think what people don’t realize is how many flavors we have in downtown Lititz. The people who work there are so proud of the food they produce.”
This year, about 35 local restaurants will have food samples available for purchase as part of Taste of Lititz, and while they will serve as the main course, the festive, carnival atmosphere will be garnished with drinks, art, outdoor games geared toward families and live music. It’s
all a recipe for fun and fellowship.
“A Taste of Lititz is different in that it’s not super structured,” said Branle. “It’s a celebration, and we’re celebrating Lititz. We have tons of people calling to be involved, and it’s truly a Lititz event. It’s a block party and a gettogether, where everyone is like family and we’re expressing how much we love this place.”
After being shut down by the pandemic, Taste of Lititz made a triumphant return in 2022, with a crowd in excess of 3,000 people. Branle said the event is prepared for even greater numbers this time around.
“I think the vast majority of our visitors come from within the Warwick School District,” said Branle, “but we also get folks from Manheim Township and Ephrata and Manheim Central. It’s nearby visi-
tors who love Lancaster County, who love Lititz.”
“I wanted to make it available to families, regardless of incomes,” continued Branle. “No tickets are required. Just show up and have a great night.”
Of all the events staged in Lititz, Taste of Lititz might be the most informal - and the tastiest.
“It’s about our local restaurants, our local art and taking little tastes from all the food options we have downtown,” said Branle. “I like to sit back and watch. For me, there’s this sense that I’ve got to pinch myself because I get to work here. You have all these people who are genuinely happy. It’s one of those moments where you get to take stock of how special this place is.”

They say that the best things in life are free. Maybe the only thing better is people sharing resources with others.
The Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s Summer Music Series is back bigger and better than ever. But as it has evolved into a major event in Lancaster County, the Summer Music Series has become more reliant on the financial support of local businesses and philanthropic organizations.
Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation president Tom Ellis said that the popular events couldn’t be offered free to the public without that support. This year’s 13-concert Summer Music Series, which will be conducted every Sunday at 7:30 p.m. from June 4 to Aug. 27 at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, is being backed by Citadel, Clark Associates, Ephrata National Bank, Everence, the Hershey Company, Lancaster County Community Foundation and Woodstream.
“It’s a special event and businesses are allowing us to have this event,” said Ellis. “The series doesn’t happen without these sponsors. It’s not a nicety; it’s a necessity. They’ve really stepped up in an economy that doesn’t allow for this type of funding.”

Summer Series
“We curate music and art for everyone in the Lancaster community,” added Ellis. “Most of our audience is drawn from the city of Lancaster.”
If generous support has become a trademark of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation’s Summer Music Series’ 61-year tradition, so has diversity. This summer’s music series, which features a wide variety of genres, from jazz to Irish, from blues to rock, from bluegrass to funk and soul, promises not to disappoint.
Traditionally, the Summer Music Series has drawn between 3,000 and 6,000 viewers for each 90-minute concert. That number usually balloons to 25,000 to 30,000 for its annual patriotic concert, which this year will be celebrated on July 2.
“It’s how summer begins,” said Ellis. “For people who grew up here, they’ll say, ‘I
frompg 1
remember going to the Long’s Park Summer Music Series.’ I think this year’s lineup is one of the best we’ve had in years. Its diversity is curated for every audience. We want to make sure the music resonates with the citizens of Lancaster. We almost need to be fresh and new every year so people come back.”
The now-iconic Long’s Park Amphitheater was built in 1962, and the summer music simply followed. Over those years, the Summer Music Series has introduced people to performers like Count Basie, Pat and Shirley Boone, The Smothers Brothers, Helen Reddy, The Spinners, Aretha Franklin, Arlo Guthrie, Roberta Flack and Kevin Bacon, many before they became household names.
“The musicians come to us after every event and tell us, ‘I hope you realize what you have here,’” said Ellis. “We

Mulberry Art Studios to present exhibit
JJ Roach, who first debuted his artworks in a solo show at Mulberry Art Studios two years ago at age 17, will return to the studio in June to showcase his newest collection of art, titled “Surreal Detail.” The public is invited to meet the artist and view the artworks at a First Friday opening reception on June 2 from 5 to 9 p.m. Mulberry Art Studios, located at 21 N. Mulberry St. in downtown Lancaster, offers free parking in a private lot.
Roach, who has been diagnosed with autism and ADHD, said that he has been able to focus and channel his emotions through art. After his first art expo at Mulberry Art Studios, he displayed his creations at Night of Entrepreneurs in Harrisburg and at Hershey Gardens in Hershey. His artworks were also on exhibit at the Pennsyl-
vania Capitol last July. Most recently, his work “Celestial Dreams” won first place at “Art of the State,” a juried exhibition held at the State Musuem of Pennsylvania in Harrisburg.
Roach has been active in presenting charitable gifts of artworks to Aaron’s Acres, the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition, the American Heart Association and The ARC of Lancaster.
“Surreal Detail” will run throughout June. Guests who wish to visit the exhibit but are unable to stop by during First Friday hours may contact gallery curator Stephanie Clayton-Kulfan at Stephanie .Mulberryart@gmail.com or 717-295-1949 to schedule a time to visit the gallery. A few of the historic trains will be open, with museum staff members present to answer questions. The program is free of charge for children age 2 and under, personal assistant aides, and current members of the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. To register, visit www.eventbrite.com.
Railroading Merit Badge Workshops for Scouts ages 11 to 17 will be held on Saturdays, June 17 and Aug. 12. Boys and girls will earn the railroading merit badge through the use of historic artifacts and images, model trains, and behind-the-scenes tours. There is a cost to participate. To register, visit www.eventbrite.com.
Reading Railroad Days will take place on Wednesday, June 28, to Sunday, July 2 and Wednesday, July 5, to Saturday, July 8. Admission is included in the regular museum admission. This annual event highlights the historic Reading Railroad with an

The Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania will commemorate their 40th anniversary in 2023 with a limited-edition, HO-scale, custom-designed boxcar. This unique boxcar, and one of the first-ever custom HO-scale projects from Lionel, features the 1983 Grif Teller painting of the John Bull locomotive commissioned by the Friends, a 2023 photo of the John Bull and the first logo of the Friends, a stylized version of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s historic Broad Street Station clock. The boxcar comes ready to run on operating HO-scale layouts with metal wheels, metal couplers, opening doors, and added weights.

Rock Ford exhibit examines decorative arts
Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, has announced a new Focus Exhibit in the Snyder Gallery for its 2023 season. The exhibit is “The Market Town and the Metropolis: 18thCentury Lancaster and Its Artistic Connections to Philadelphia.”
Throughout most of the 18th century, Philadelphia remained the largest city in the American colonies and then in the fledgling United States. In many ways, it was America’s political, financial and cultural epicenter. During this same period, the borough of Lancaster was one of the largest non-coastal towns in America and was closely tied to Philadelphia both commercially and culturally. In addition to serving as a source of raw materials, food and supplies for Philadelphia as well as an important market for its elegantly crafted goods, Lancaster, through which passed the “great wagon road,” increasingly came to serve as Philadelphia and its port’s gateway to western settlement. This already strong connection was both manifested by and strengthened with the completion of the Lancaster-Philadelphia Turnpike in 1794, the first longdistance macadam road in the new United States.

Philadelphia. Examples of works attributed to both men will be included in this exhibit and demonstrate influences from both Philadelphia and Lancaster.
The exhibit will also highlight local tastemakers who were exposed to new styles through their personal connections to Philadelphia and brought these styles to Lancaster. The exhibit will include a rare, late 18th-century Philadelphia Chippendale camelback sofa believed to have belonged to Judge Jasper Yeates; the sofa is part of a private family collection and has never before been publicly exhibited. Also included among Lancaster County tastemakers were affluent persons who had their portraits painted in Philadelphia. The exhibit features a portrait of Lancaster County Judge Henry Slaymaker by John Hesselius and a portrait of Henry’s wife, Faithful Richardson Slaymaker, by John’s father, Gustavus Hesselius, an early Swedish immigrant to Philadelphia. These portraits are also part of a private collection and have not been publicly exhibited since 1971 at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
With Lancaster’s growing affluence and stronger ties to Philadelphia as the 18th century progressed, the connections between both in the fields of the decorative arts increasingly flourished. Lancaster furniture makers developed unique styles that, while clearly influenced by Philadelphia artisans, did not merely mimic them. Artisans, such as furniture makers Thomas Tufft and Peter Frick, worked in both Lancaster and in
The Richard C. von Hess Foundation is the Founding Sponsor for this exhibit. This exhibit is also funded in part through a grant approved by the Americana Corner Preserving America Grant Program.
Admission to the 2023 Focus Exhibit is included with the purchase of an admission ticket. This Focus Exhibit will run through Tuesday, Oct. 31.

Eye Drop, which is in its f ourth year, is a rappelling event in which individuals commit to raising $1,000 to go over the edge of the Holiday Inn Lancaster and support VisionCorps. Each participant starts on the roof and rappels 10 stories to the ground. This year’s goal is to raise $175,000.
