Magdalena Lutz, Marc Class, and Class of 2021 president Nick Reedy have all written speeches to present. Lutz titled her speech “Well-Prepared Warriors,” taking a cue from the school’s team nickname. “It’s a reflection on all that we have learned at Warwick,” she said, adding that she was inspired by considering all the facts and concepts she has digested, only to discover how few she remembered. “I was a little shocked,” recalled Lutz. “But then I reflected on all the really important things I have learned and the life lessons I have

Ron Stief, program director for the Lititz recCenter, is a fan of the Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail. “My wife and I ride it a couple times a month,” said Stief, who lives in Lititz. “We do the 8-mile ride … grab a piece of pizza in Ephrata and do the ride back. It’s a cool way to spend a weekend afternoon.” Stief likes the opportunity to visit Ephrata as well. “It gets me to a restaurant in Ephrata I might never go to,” he said. See Connections pg 2

into three communities, connecting Warwick and Ephrata by passing through Akron. Part of the trail in Warwick is paved. It changes to gravel and then back to pavement in Akron. Stief pointed out that the gravel area is not plowed following winter storms. “Cross-country skiers can use it,” he said, adding that a number of Lititz-area residents enjoy the sport and that the usage makes it a four-season trail. Stief estimates that trail usage is split about 50/50 between cyclists and pedestrians, including runners, hikers, and walkers. There is a bike share facility located at the Warwick Township Municipal Campus along the trail and run by Bike Works of Lititz. “You can get a two- or fourhour rental,” said Stief, who added that the transaction can be completed online at www.lititzbikeworks.com/

made handicapped-accessible. The Mary L. Oehme Gardens also benefited from the efforts of dedicated volunteers over the years. Each spring, Carl Shuman, a water garden expert, cleaned the century-old fish pond and added water lilies to provide shelter for the resident goldfish. The Lititz Woman’s Club tended the herb garden, and Lititz Women of Today planted perennials, some of which still appear each spring. Curtis Zeller mowed the grass during the summer months and tidied up the

falling leaves in the autumn. Lee Stoltzfus, a designer of period landscapes, compiled a list of plants that would have been growing at the time these two 18th-century homes were built. Bringing Loved Ones Home With Project Lifesaver Before Project Lifesaver came to Lancaster County on Oct. 20, 2012, an elderly man wandered from his home during the winter. Much effort was put into

Implementing this program in our county was important to our club.” Project Lifesaver is a search-and-rescue program to locate at-risk individuals who wander. Its mission is to use state-of-the-art technology in assisting those who care for individuals with Alzheimer’s, dementia, autism, developmental disorders, Down syndrome, and other brain-related challenges across the United States. According to Project Lifesaver’s data, in over 3,400 searches, Project Lifesaver has achieved a 100% success rate on an average of less than 30 minutes. Pilot Club has partnered

A Taste Of 17543

BY ANN MEAD ASH

As always, Taste of Lititz will encourage area residents to visit restaurants located in the 17543 ZIP code, but this year’s event will not be limited to one evening of samples and festivities. Rather, the event will last 10 days and invite residents to visit restaurants within their own comfort zones. “If you don’t feel comfortable dining in, go

get takeout,” said Holly DeKarske, executive director of Venture Lititz, who noted that the restaurants are in special need of support. The 2021 Taste of Lititz event will begin, as is tradition, on the first Friday of June, which is June 4, and run through Sunday, June 13. During that time, area residents will be invited to try new restaurants, which have been asked to offer new food

items and specials during the event; stroll downtown; visit shops; and hear live musical entertainment each night except Monday, June 7. DeKarske noted that performers will be placed in restaurants, on Main Street, or near the Lititz Springs Park. Musical entertainers will include Todd and Bailey Fulginiti, Texas Anne, Steel Radiance, and The Part Time Managers. Youth performers will be String Synergy, made up of high school-age students, and students from the Hooley School of Irish Dance. In addition, Todd Fulginiti will perform on the Big Blue Truck. DeKarske noted that last year, the truck drove to restaurant locations outside of the downtown area, where Todd performed. As in the past, the Lititz Art Association is creating works of art that will be auctioned off as a fundraiser for Venture Lititz, DeKarske noted. This

year, the auction will be online at www.lititzartassociation.com, but items to be auctioned will be on display in the windows of downtown shops for visitors to see. In addition to paintings, DeKarske said that photography, jewelry, a planter and a gift basket will be among the auction items. DeKarske pointed out that because Lititz celebrates Second Fridays, visitors who come downtown on Friday, June 11, are likely to find more shops open, and there will be a special treat available for purchase from 3 to 7 p.m. outside the Wilbur Chocolate Retail Store, 45 N. Broad St., Lititz. DeKarske shared, “Wilbur Chocolate makes a frozen chocolate drink that’s pretty popular. and the organization,” said Sollenberger. “It is a pleasure for me to meet someone like you,” she added. Ken became involved in Meals on Wheels after his wife, Virginia, who was called Ginny, began organizing delivery volunteers. “When my wife, Ginny, did the routes, I would help her,” explained Ken, adding that because Ginny could not type and he could, he took over. When his son bought him a computer and a printer, he transferred the files to the new technology. He colorcoded clients’ names based on special diets and other needs. After Ginny became ill and died, he continued coordinating the delivery volunteers. Currently, a large number of Meals on Wheels drivers deliver to about 60 area resi-

dents in Warwick School District. “We have four routes,” said Ken. “The best way is to have a driver and a runner to deliver. Many drivers do one day a week and the same route each time,” he explained. George Nickel, president of the Lititz Meals on Wheels board, noted that the job Ken volunteered for is especially important because the clients receiving meals change regularly. “If we add a new client or a client went to the hospital or when they visit relatives and we don’t deliver, … Ken managed (all those details) too.” Nickel added that Ken’s work experience selling flooring in different areas developed his geographic skills. “Ken has a way of knowing how to make a route more efficient,” said Nickel. “He knows the streets and (the shortest) ways to get from point A to point B.” Nickel also noted that some clients

have Leola and Manheim addresses. “We go up near Middle Creek in Elizabeth Township,” he said. Ken added that the group used to deliver to a client in Hopeland. “We try not to turn anybody down,” Nickel said. Ken recalls drivers who went the extra mile for clients. “We had a lady from Rothsville who wanted to drive, and she did a great job,” said Ken, who said that at one point, a covered bridge near a Leola client’s home was undergoing construction making it impossible for the volunteer to deliver to the client. “When they wouldn’t let her cross the bridge, she talked a construction worker into delivering the meal,” said Ken, who chuckled over the woman’s tenacity. Readers who want to know more about the Lititz Meals on Wheels program may visit https://lititzcob.org/ community-life/meals-on -wheels. Those who wish to volunteer may call 717-626-2500.

Michael Sheaffer won third place in the Junior Division of the Physical Science category in the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair.

Michael Sheaffer, a seventhgrade student at Our Mother of Perpetual Help School (OMPH School) in Ephrata, placed third in the Junior Division of the Physical Science category in this year’s North Museum Science and Engineering Fair. The topic of Michael’s project was “Magnetism: The Power of a Gauss Rifle.” The physics-based project focused on whether or not the distance of a steel ball shot from a Gauss rifle would increase as the number of Gauss layers - one magnet and two steel balls increased. The results of the experiment showed that as

Gauss layers were added, the distance the exiting ball traveled increased. Judging for this year’s projects took place online, and winners were announced during a live virtual ceremony on March 25. Michael was presented with his award by middle school science teacher Ann DiNovis and OMPH School interim principal Brenda Weaver. OMPH School offers full-day preschool, full-day kindergarten, and classes for students in grades one through eight. For more information, call 717-738-2414 or visit www.omphschool.com.
