Death is personal and mysterious. It’s a part of life, the final stage of life.
As a registered nurse case manager at Hospice & Community Care of Lancaster, Gordon Smoker has watched many patients experience the end of life.
“I feel like we all have our ideas of what death is. Religion and spirituality can provide a framework, but until we’re at the door, we’re not exactly sure what it’s like,” Smoker said. “We truly don’t know what’s going on. It’s a very spiritual time.”
In his position, Smoker cares for patients diagnosed as terminal, with six months or less to live, and their caregivers, very often in their homes. There’s a technical side, a medical side, to his profession, but also a mental and emotional side.
“There’s a balance you have to find,” said Smoker, a resident of Manheim Township. “You don’t want to be too cold and detached,

but you have to be empathetic to what the patient and the families are going through. You have to limit how attached you get. There have been times when I’ve become emotional. Sometimes there’s

nothing to say. You have to be able to recognize when people are making those end-of-life changes. You have to be able to talk through things.”
Hospice & Community Care employs nearly 400 individuals, more than 200 of whom practice some level of nursing. At any given time, Smoker works with 12 to 25 patients and their families in the Lititz area, the Denver area, north of Ephrata, into Myerstown and Berks County.

Nothing quenches thirst for summer music like lemonade concerts
BY JEFF FALK
The Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series (LLCS) is cool, it’s refreshing, it’s delightfully delicious - not unlike the summertime drink bearing its name and served at the end of each performance.
The Lancaster Lemonade Concert Series is back, as big and entertaining as ever. Quite frankly, it’s a great way to spend warm Thursday evenings
in Manheim Township.
“It’s held in a church setting, and the air conditioning makes it a cool atmosphere,” said LLCS board member Kathy Seaber.
“People are talking, but they’re very attentive during the performance. It’s every informal.
It’s very relaxed. People come casual. It’s very charming. It’s a fun evening.”

it’s important to the community,” said Smoker. “Hospice care is something many people may be able to benefit from. It doesn’t have to be a scary thing. It’s like the rest of life. We approach death the way we approach life. It’s the next challenge.”
One of 25 hospice providers in Lancaster County, Hospice & Community Care supplied care for 4,800 patients and their families in 2023.
“We’re here to make our patients’ remaining time the best we can,” said Smoker. “That’s what I enjoy about the job. A lot of people are going to have different stories. You deal with acceptance, and you deal with denial. Sometimes, it can almost be a positive experience.”
Smoker has been a registered nurse for 10 years, the last four of which have been spent in the world of hospice. Included in his duties as a registered nurse case manager, Smoker collaborates with other nurses to coordinate patient care,

Local nonprofits pool their resources to feed the world
BY JEFF FALK
World hunger isn’t a food shortage problem. World hunger is a logistical difficulty, a supply problem.
Working together, a pair of local nonprofit organizations have come up with a solution that is making a real difference in addressing the global problem. The key to their successful solution is an innovative approach to the process of food dehydration.
“The problem isn’t that the

Ephrata Cloister plans special tours
The Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, will offer Upper Floor Tours on Saturday, June 15. Tours will begin every hour starting at 10 a.m. with the last tour departing at 2 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to discover the unrestored second floor of the 1743 Saron Dormitory building, or Sisters’ House. This space maintains much of the structure’s original 18th-century design and materials that aided in the building’s restoration during the 1940s through 1960s.
Additionally, expanded guided tours of the Historic Ephrata Cloister will be offered on select Saturdays throughout the summer. Tours have been set for 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on June 8 and Aug. 10, as well as for 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on July 13. They will be available on a first-come, first-served basis, and there is a per-person cost.

world doesn’t have enough food; it’s the distribution,” said Jeremy Frith, the CEO of Barnabas Aid, an international nonprofit headquartered in Lancaster.
“We’re trying to address that problem. It’s a distribution issue, but it’s also an educational issue. We need a change of mindset. We have so much food and people don’t think about it, and when it goes into landfills, it creates problems. That food could be feeding somebody.”
being prepared for shipment to Cuba.
“In the United States, an estimated 80 billion pounds of food is wasted each year, which equates to 242 pounds per person,” said Frith, a resident of Lancaster. “Forty percent of America’s annual food supply is wasted. When we go to a restaurant, we get huge portions of food. But it’s not just a United States problem. A lot of food is wasted in the Western world. Globally, 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted each year.”
Frith said that Blessings of Hope receives so much donated food from farmers, supermarkets and distributors that it is sometimes forced to turn it away. Unused food usually ends up as animal feed or is dumped in landfills.

Tours will be available on a first-come, first served-basis and are suitable for visitors age 12 and older. There is a fee. Group sizes will be limited, and access to the second floor requires use of a narrow and steep staircase. All participants must sign a waiver prior to the start of the tour.
In addition to the traditional guided tour experience that features stops in the Saron (Sisters’ House) and Saal (meetinghouse), expanded site tours will also include guided visits to several additional period buildings and areas on-site. Expanded guided site tours will last approximately two hours.

Near the end of 2022, Barnabas Aid, which is located at 80 Abbeyville Road, Lancaster, approached Blessings of Hope, 500 Becker Road, Leola, about the possibility of donating a $90,000, 20-square-foot commercial food dehydration unit to its ministry. Fresh fruits and vegetables are placed in the unit, which preserves the produce’s nutritional value and extends its shelf life by five years.
From the process, the organizations concocted a dehydrated soup mix that can provide one meal for up to 12 people.
“Our ministry’s mission is to help suffering Christians around the world,” said Frith. “The goal is to get food to places where it’s basically nonexistent. We’re feeding people who need food. We’re doing it because we’re directed to do so in the Bible. We want to help as many people as possible. The suffering in the world is getting worse. We have a duty to help our brothers and sisters the best we can.”
In November of 2023, the Barnabas Aid-Blessings of Hope collaboration sent out its initial container load of donated food - valued at $250,000 - to Haiti. The second container load of donated food is currently
“We knew the partnership would work,” said Frith. “Blessings of Hope has so much food coming in. A lot of it is food that’s going to go by the wayside if not used.”
More than just work, the partnership between Barnabas Aid and Blessings of Hope has blossomed. It’s a joint venture that has produced a win-win situation.
“It’s been great to have this partnership,” said Frith. “Blessings of Hope has the facilities, and they also have the volunteers. We have the international connections. We know where the food is needed. It enables our participants to realize they are really making a difference. It’s a way for Americans to feel they’re part of the solution, not part of the problem.”
“Now what we want to do is scale this up,” Frith added.

of eight concerts given mostly by local musicians and bands on Thursdays at 7 p.m. The popular summer series will kick off on June 13 with Auscultation Brass and will conclude on Aug. 8 with a performance by Lancaster Marimba Ensemble.
There will be no show on July 4.
The performances, which are typically 90 minutes in length, are free to attend, and good will offerings are received during the intermission of each one.
“The musicians enjoy performing; that’s why they want to come back the next year,” said Seaber. “I think it’s that homey atmosphere. The performers know that people appreciate their talent. That has to make you feel good as a performer. What performer doesn’t appreciate applause?”
This year’s LLCS will also feature Celtic Americana band Rizzetta’s Tones on June 20, Shaun and Kayla Ressler accompanied by A. Scott Williams on June 27, John Darrenkamp & Friends on July 11, “I Got You Babe: Let’s Duet” featuring Reji Woods on July 18, the New Holland Band on July 25 and
the Lancaster British Brass Band on Aug. 1.
“Some of the bands have quite the following,” said Seaber. “People know about our concerts in the summer on Thursdays. It’s kind of established; it’s familiar and regular. Each show is a variety of songs, maybe even something you don’t know. The audiences like when the performers talk to them. That makes it personal and familiar. But all of the performers are good in their own way.”
While the variety of LLCS’ music is wide and familiar, the series places
Ice Cream Sundae Day posted
The Eicher Arts Center will hold its annual Ice Cream Sundae Day on Sunday, June 9.
Members of the public may stop at the historic Eicher Center, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park, to get an ice cream sundae from 2 p.m. until supplies run out, possibly around 5 p.m. Hot dogs and other food and drinks will also be available.
The Celtic band Across the Pond will provide music in a tent outside the Eicher Center from 4 to 6 p.m. The band plays airs, jigs, slip jigs, reels, ballads, and more from Ireland, Scotland, Appa -
lachia, and other places. Across the Pond has performed at numerous festivals in Pennsylvania and beyond. Additionally, Joyful Canvas will provide face painting and hand out balloon creations from 2 to 4 p.m. Inside the Eicher House, Penn’s Woods Theater in Miniature will perform the play “Rumpelstiltskin” at 2:15 and 3:15 p.m.
Admission to the festivities is free, and donations to the Eicher Arts Center will be accepted. The event will be held rain or shine. People may bring lawn chairs for the concert.
an emphasis on patriotic music, including marches, Broadway show tunes, operatic music, Irish songs, movie and television show themes and popular music. Typically, between 200 and 400 people attend the concerts.
“The median age of the audience is probably 60 or older, but we do get some families,” said Seaber. “It gives people something to do in the summer.”
This season will mark LLCS’ 51st series of concerts. LLCS can trace its origins to the early 1970s and the Lancaster Opera
Company Associates.
“It continues a tradition of supporting local talent and providing entertain ment in the summertime that appeals to a wide audi ence,” said Seaber. “We’re still here. We’re sponsoring another season, and it’s going to be a good season. Finding the groups, calling the groups and organizing is hard work in January, February and March, but then it kind of runs itself.”

Strawberry Social set at Old Zion Church
Building character through bicycling
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Over the past decade, Lee DeRemer has watched great things happen with Lifecycles. The nonprofit Christ-centered mentoring program aims to build young people of character through bicycling.
“This program appeals to a wide range of young people with different gifts and skills, but it seems to really attract teen boys and girls who haven’t found their way in a team sport or another program in school,” he said. “For many kids, this is the first thing that clicks, and that’s very rewarding.”
A Strawberry Social will be held on Saturday, June 8, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Old Zion German Reformed Church, 187 Riefsnyder Road, Brickerville. The event with be the 46th annual gathering at the church. Food will be served outside
on the lawn overlooking the Brubaker Valley. The menu will consist of chicken corn noodle soup along with strawberries served on cake and with vanilla ice cream. Whipped cream will also be available. Attendees are encouraged to bring folding chairs and blankets for seating and trays for their food. Proceeds from the event will help to maintain the church, cemetery and church grounds.
During the event, visitors are invited to visit the cemetery, which dates to before the Revolutionary War, and learn about the history of the church from Old Zion Church board members. The church building was constructed in 1813.

Ware Center plans First Friday events
The Arts at Millersville University will join Lancaster city’s First Friday celebrations with We the People First Friday on June 7 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. At 6:30 p.m. in Steinman Hall, Speak to My Soul and A Concrete Rose will present the fourth annual “Live From the Red Rose” show.
Lee and his wife, Marcie, started Lifecycles with a mission of supporting youths in the community. “This program always has been and still is 100% free for the boys and girls who participate,” Lee said, noting that bikes, helmets and other safety gear are all provided if needed, along with a free hot meal every time the group gets together for a ride.
“This year, we’ve got 139 boys and girls registered, and 38 of those are first-time participants,” he shared. “The bulk of our participants are from Lancaster County, but we have folks from York, Lebanon, Dauphin and Perry counties, too.” The program is open to youths ages 12 to 18, and Lifecycles teams are split into boys’ and girls’ groups. Boys’ and girls’ teams ride from Riverfront Park, 551 Vinegar Ferry Road, Marietta, on Tuesdays at 5:45 p.m., and boys’ and girls’ teams also ride from Amos Herr Park, 1700 Nissley Road, Landisville, at 5:45 p.m. on Thursdays.
In addition to the groups enjoying rides around the countryside of Lancaster County, some of the more
seasoned participants are training for longer, challenging rides taking place this summer. A girls’ team will ride a six-day, 230mile route along the coast of Lake Michigan, finishing at Mackinac Island. Boys’ teams will ride a six-day, 320-mile route from Pittsburgh to Washington, D.C., on the Great Allegheny Passage/C&O Canal trail; a six-day, 290-mile route to Niagara Falls; and an eight-day, 350-mile route from northern Pennsylvania through the Adirondack Mountains. A boys’ team will also take a 13-day, 430-mile ride in Colorado, finishing with a summit of Mount Blue Sky on North America’s highest paved road at 14,271 feet.
“It’s going to be a very fun summer,” Lee said. “We are also rolling out an internally developed bicycling skills curriculum. We’ve spent six months writing our own curriculum, and this will help us provide more structure to the cycling skills we teach.” Teams will ride locally during the week through the end of August, and Lifecycles will continue with rides on two Saturdays in both September and October.
Although the season has already started, youths can join the program at any point. Volunteers are also welcome at any time, Lee said.
He noted that as Lifecycles celebrates 10 years of serving youths, he continues to appreciate the impact the program has on its participants.
“It’s common for a lot of teens to feel unseen in their school environment,” he said. “They are flourishing in Lifecycles.” For more information on Lifecycles, visit www .lifecyclesteam.org.

Guild of Organists to offer concert
The Lancaster Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will host a recital at the historic Trinity Lutheran Church, 31 S. Duke St., Lancaster, on Thursday, June 13, at 7 p.m. For more than 50 years, the chapter’s members have offered their talents in a concert to raise funds for scholarships.
The church sanctuary, more than 250 years old, is home to a large organ built by the Moller company in 1962. However, the sanctuary retains many features from past organs in the space, most notably the façade built by David Tannenberg, a
legendary organ builder from Lititz, in 1774. Today, the organ is tuned in Silbermann mean-tone temperament, giving it a sound unlike most organs and keyboard instruments found in this area of the world.
Music selections will range from some of the earliest works of Dietrich Buxtehude and J.S. Bach to late Romantic French works. In addition to performances by Frank Dodd, Joy Ide, Gary Garletts, Ross Ellison, and Kyle Postlethwait, Robert Horton will play a live improvisation on a submitted musical theme. The con -
cert will close with Karl Moyer performing Marcel Dupre’s virtuosic “Prelude and Fugue in G Minor.”
A freewill offering will be received to support the Guild’s scholarship fund, which provides scholarships for young people to take organ lessons. One scholarship winner, Jaden Espenshade, will perform J.S. Bach’s “Piece d’Orgue.” Parking can be found in the lot adjacent to the parish house and in the Duke Street parking garage.
For more details, contact Postlethwait, publicity chairman, at kyle.p@ comcast.net or visit www .lancasterago.org.

The Inside Track offers outstanding footwear, superior foot care
Healthy feet play a critical role in a body’s overall wellbeing, and the right shoes are an important factor in the health of feet. It’s that type of attention to detail and personal service that has become The Inside Track’s business trademark.
The Inside Track, a franchise dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in active footwear, is opening a new store at 1026 Lititz Pike, Lititz, on Saturday, June 1, not far from where the business was founded nearly 50 years ago. The festivities will begin at 9 a.m. and will include shoe demos, giveaways and games.
“Our goal is to get you into a proper-fitting shoe,” said Ryan Amway, one of the three co-owners of The Inside Track. “Everything kind of starts with the feet and works up. It’s about the correct fit and style of shoe for what you’re looking to do. If you have the incorrect support for your feet, you could develop foot problems. If you’re exercising or on your feet a lot, you’re going to experience pain or discomfort. All these shoes are of a higher quality, and they have support built in. We believe there’s a perfect shoe for everyone.”
More than a sporting goods retailer or a running shoe purveyor, The Inside Track specializes in a wide variety of items related to feet, including orthotics, inserts, socks, apparel and activewear. But 70% of its focus is on shoes - all the top brands of sandals and sneakers.
The Inside Track’s customer-focused approach leads to repeat customers, loyalty and sometimes clients becoming friends.
“We’re not just trying to sell you something,” said Ryan.
“We’re trying to sell you things you need. I think people like that. We try to have the majority of popular colors and styles in stock, and if we don’t, we can get them in in a few days at no extra charge.”
Ryan’s father, Mark, a celebrated distance runner, took over operation of the original The Inside Track at 1659 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, in 1978. Eleven years later, the elder Amway opened a second location at 6301 Grayson Road, Harrisburg.
Then, in 2009, The Inside Track’s third store began welcoming customers at 6200 Carlisle Pike, Mechanicsburg. Two years ago, Ryan and his brother, Tyler, along with their dad’s longtime manager, Zach Valentine, purchased the business from Mark.
“When my dad bought the store, there was no real place where you could find an assortment of higher-end athletic shoes,” said Ryan. “The need for a specific type of footwear was big. We’ve just kind of expanded on it, but we’ve stayed true to the vision. We’re trying to give people a reason to shop in person for shoes. We’re not any more expensive than anything you could find online, but we offer better personal service.”

Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, recently held its sixth annual We Love Our Pets show. The exhibit opened on May 3, and it featured more than 170 pieces of artwork by pet owners and artists from every school district in the county to celebrate the unique bond between humans and their animal companions. The show remained at the gallery through the end of
The opening reception was attended by veterinarians and vendors of pet accessories and other animal-related products, as well as representatives of the Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue.
Every year, Mulberry Art Studios uses its We Love Our Pets show to support the Sebastian Foundation by donating a portion of the proceeds from art sales to the organization. The Sebastian Foundation helps to locate homes for animals throughout Lancaster County, and its representatives were accompanied by several adoptable dogs on opening night. The event raised more than $800 for the foundation. We Love Our Pets’ opening night was sponsored by Metro Pet Vet, an animal hospital based in Lancaster city.
Every year, art teachers in school districts such as Conestoga Valley, Warwick, Penn Manor, Solanco and many others partner with Mulberry Art Studios to incorporate the We Love
Our Pets show in their curriculum. Students are able to submit artwork made in class for a chance to be featured in the exhibit.
Three artists received awards for pieces entered in the show: the youth People’s Choice award was given to Jinx Canfield of Ephrata for the painting “Eloise,” Violet van der Meij of Lancaster earned Best in Show in the youth category for her piece “Space Aussie,” and Jen van der Meij of Lancaster received the Best in Show and People’s Choice awards for her paintings “Colonel Sanders” and “Jessie,” respectively.
“I enjoy sculpture and drawing but I didn’t have the patience to work with acrylic on canvas when I was younger, so I’m not as experienced with it yet,” said 16-year-old Canfield, who used acrylic paint to make “Eloise.” “Eloise, the pup, developed some recent health issues limiting her time here with us, so this is going to end up as a sort of memorial and remembrance piece.”
Violet, who is Jen’s 11-year-old daughter, said she decided to paint an Australian Shepherd as
it is her favorite breed. “I enjoy all mediums of art, but I went with watercolor and ink because it was a progression from some of the pieces I submitted last year,” Violet added. “I allowed myself to use more imagination this year by putting my Aussie into a space environment.”
“I enjoyed watching Violet be more comfortable with exploring this year, and I love how her pieces turned out,” Jen said. “She’s a talented young lady, and I loved sharing this experience with her.”
Jen’s paintings incorporated gold leaf, a technique that she had never experimented with before.
“Jessie” depicts Jen’s
childhood pet donkey, and “Colonel Sanders” portrays a cat owned by Jen’s close friends. “For ‘Jessie,’ I wanted my love of donkeys to be represented with an over-the-top background, flooding the entire piece with gold leaf before painting over it with acrylic,” Jen said. “For ‘Colonel Sanders,’ I used gold leaf as a much more subtle accent, but I exaggerated the colors of his fur to add some interest. I made him larger than life to represent how loved he is by his owners.” For more information, visit www.mulberryart studios.com.
First Friday from pg 4
Featuring a blend of dance, spoken word, and music, the show will include performances by local artists Tieshay Cheryl, Kati La Dr√°mati, and Shellyifyanasty, and the poet laureate of Lancaster city, Evita Colon. Local youth musicians Jaymeir and Ceevon Dixon, the Unstoppables Drill Team, and others will open the show.
In the Regitz Gallery from 6 to 8 p.m., a reception will celebrate the opening
of “Expanded Visions,” a juried photography exhibition that has kicked off the Lancaster Summer Arts Festival since the 1980s. This show celebrates the diverse, creative works of photographers in central Pennsylvania and embraces all aspects of photography, from analog to digital and from representational to abstract. “Expanded Visions” will be on display through Friday, July 26. The Regitz Gallery is open on
Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free, and no tickets are required.
