With compassion projects, Love INC seeks to build stronger communities
BY JEFF FALK
Something wonderful happens when volunteers put their faith into practice and help others.
At Love In the Name of Christ (INC) of Lancaster County, people do this through “the compassion projects.”
“Part of what we believe is that God calls us to live out our faith and serve,” said Katie Leaman, the communications and donor development director for Love INC of Lancaster County. “We provide resources and opportunities to serve, and we’re able to help the community by listening to their needs. Our goal is to help people with financial needs remain in their homes or make their homes more accessible.”
Currently, Love INC is looking for

Being a waitress is a demanding and sometimes thankless job.
It requires attention to detail, multitasking skills and patience. It also demands physical stamina, a can-do attitude and a nurturing mindset.
Serving is not an occupation for everyone, but Julia Daughtery pulls it off quite nicely.
A resident of Akron, Daugherty has been a waitress for eight years, about the last 12 months of which have included serving at Knight and Day Diner, 3140 Lititz Pike, Lititz.
people in need to help and for volunteers to provide that help for its compassion projects. Many of the compassion projects focus on minor home repairs and additions like yard projects, painting, small electrical fixes and adding handicappedaccessible ramps.
Participants, who must demonstrate sp ecific needs, either physical or financial, are encouraged to reach out to Love INC of Lancaster County. Love INC provides volunteer labor and many of the materials required for its compassion projects.
Participants for Love INC’s compassion projects must also reside in the Warwick, Manheim Township, Manheim Central, Ephrata, Cocalico, Elizabethtown, Donegal and Hempfield school districts.
“Right now, there’s a big push on to get the word out to people who might have needs,” said Leaman.
“ We’re waiting to help people. We do our best to meet all the calls, but if we can’t, we try to connect people to other resources. When we receive calls, we try to connect local residents with our partner churches in their areas. It’s essentially a mission trip to your backyard.”
Last year, Love INC received between 200 and 300 requests for services as part of its compassion projects. Some 250 volunteers from Love INC’s 32 member churches completed about 100 of those projects in 2022.
“I want people to know that serving is a call for Christians,” said Leaman. “It can be very easy. There are people in need in your neighborhood, and you may not even realize it. Our nonprofit mission is to mobilize the Lord’s churches to serve the community. We partner and connect with churches across the county.”

“I feel like it takes a certain type of person to be a server,” said Daugherty. “You have to be an outgoing person. Obviously, you want to be kind to your customers. But you’ve also got to have a backbone. You have to have a lot of patience. You have to have a nurturing character.”
Typically, Daugherty works 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Knight and Day Diner, serving both the breakfast and lunch crowds. She stressed that those who frequent diners are generally a different clientele from the customers who go to bars or taverns.

Teresa Wiedemer, who coordinates the Challenger Football and Cheerleading program for United Disability Services (UDS), can sum up the goal of the program in one sentence. “It’s a great way for kids with disabilities to meet other kids (with disabilities),” she said. Wiedemer, who took over the program in 2022, recalled the story of a young man who joined the flag football league last year. “In the beginning, the boy didn’t realize how active it was,” said Wiedemer. “He would play a few minutes and then sit down, but by the end of the season, he was playing the whole game.”

UDS Challenger Football and Cheerleading program for individuals with disabilities meets from August through October.
UDS Challenger Football and Cheerleading will hold games in the gym at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, on Saturdays from Aug. 5 through Oct. 14 from 9:30 a.m. to noon each session. No game will be held on Sept. 2, just prior to Labor Day.
Non-contact flag football is open to boys and girls ages 8 to 21. “We have volunteer coaches and buddies so each kid who needs one has a helper,” said Wiedemer. “Each kid gets to score, and each gets to kick, and we don’t keep track of the score.” Cheerleading is open to boys and girls of any age. Coach Sophon Bowman works with the team members on cheers, and they cheer for the flag football teams and then perform during a break between games and at the end of the game. Wiedemer has connected with the World Cup Jupiter special needs cheering team, which practices at Spooky Nook, for a visit with the Challenger team. “The (World Cup Jupiter cheerleaders) will come and do their routine,” said Wiedemer, who is also working to bring the Philadelphia Eagles Cheerleaders to a game to do a clinic with
the cheer team. “I try to have guests each week,” said Wiedemer, who is also in touch with an internationally known magician from Philadelphia about a guest appearance.
Wiedemer first got involved in the program about seven years ago, noting that she and her husband had often talked about doing this type of volunteer work. She said that 10 volunteers per game are needed for a successful program. Individuals who wish to volunteer may email tere saw@udsfoundation.org or call 717715-8775.
There is no cost for individuals with disabilities to take part in Challenger football or cheerleading. Registration is now open at www.udser vices.org/Challenger. Those who register by Friday, June 9, will receive a free T-shirt. A parent or guardian must remain at Calvary with the participant throughout the program.
Wiedemer said in 2022, about 45 participants joined the program. This year, she would like to have 60 participants to have plenty of players for each team. Wiedemer noted that the program is open to participants from within and outside Lancaster County.
The board members of the historical 1813 Old Zion German Reformed Church on Reifsnyder Road in Brickerville invite the community to the 45th annual Strawberry Social on Saturday, June 10, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. The event will feature chicken corn noodle soup along with strawberries on attendees’ choice of cake, ice cream from a local dairy, and whipped cream. The strawberry dessert and soup will be served outside the
church on the lawn overlooking the Brubaker Valley.
Attendees are advised to bring folding chairs and blankets for seating and trays for their food. Proceeds from the event will help to maintain the 210-year-old church and the surrounding property. For more information, visit www.oldzionchurch.org.

Strawberry Social planned
“There’s definitely a difference in the people who come into diners,” said Daugherty. “My clientele is usually a lot of older folks who have lived here for years. It’s a lot of businessmen. Honestly, I get a lot of out-of-town people. I have regulars who come in to see me. I like creating relationships with people.”
But serving is also a learned skill, and through experience comes wisdom. Daugherty works hard, but she also works smart.
“I feel like I’ve improved a lot from where I started,” said Daugherty. “I used to be pretty shy. Sometimes it’s hard to be one person (when things get busy). I work better with chaos. I have patience and I’m flexible.”
Daugherty said she relies heavily on gratuities to make financial ends meet.
“I feel like a lot of people do not understand how our paychecks work,” said Daugherty. “I’ve had tables that didn’t tip a penny. I’ve had tables not happy with the way food came out, and they blamed the messenger. I think a lot of it is peo-
ple who don’t understand how much we do for them. But I appreciate what I do and I appreciate the people who come in. They help support my lifestyle.”
With not a lot of downtime, servers are always on their feet and constantly on the go. The wear and tear physically takes a toll on one’s being.
“It’s hard on our bodies,” said Daughterty. “Mentally, it can get tiring. Those trays are heavy. It’s definitely hard work. But it’s just the reality of the serving industry.”

An affiliate of a national movement, the local Love INC is a network of 160 Lancaster County churches from 24 denominations. Founded locally in Ephrata 15 years ago, Love INC also engages in missions of temporary housing, elderly transportation and the fielding of other types of calls from the community.
“Some of the early board members saw this need for churches to serve their communities, and they thought this was a good model,” said Leaman. “Over the years, the mission has changed in various different ways. We’ve tried to ebb and flow with the county. We’ve also changed as churches have changed.”
To become involved with Love INC’s compassion projects as either a participant or a volunteer, call 717-735-7540, ext. 8.
Program to focus on
local taverns
Lititz Historical Foundation president Cory Van Brookhoven will present a special Zoom-only program, “Early Taverns of the Lititz Area,” on Wednesday, June 14, at 7 p.m. More than a dozen taverns were once located in and around the Lititz area, and attendees will learn the many stories behind these businesses.
This will be a pay-what-you-can program. Once a donation in any amount is made, the link to the Zoom program will be emailed a day before the presentation. To obtain the link to make a donation, email info@lititzhistoricalfoundation.com.
