In spite of the inclement weather last year, Rotary Club of Lancaster member Russ Harlan was impressed with the turnout at the 2018 Wheels and Wings Festival and 5K. “(Overall), we had half the attendance of the year prior, but we still had 91 runners in the 5K, and 70 car owners still showed up,” reported Harlan. “I was supremely impressed with 70 cars (coming out for the show) in the rain.” This year, organizers plan to bring back the activities they had planned for last year that were designed to entice more families to the event. The 2019

The Warwick girls’ softball team’s chase for PIAA gold came to an end last Monday when the Warriors were ousted in the first round of play by McDowell. In a game where the Trojans were able to score three times in the first inning and hold Warwick to five hits, McDowell took advantage of five Warrior errors on the way to a 9-4 win. After a shaky opening frame in which starting pitcher Katelyn Minney surrendered two runs on four straight hits and a fielding error led to the third, Warwick’s star pitcher settled in and did not allow another hit until the fifth inning. However, the Warriors could not manage a hit of their own until the fifth as well. Following a Danielle Jones line drive out to start the inning, Marissa Treibley (2-3) hit the second pitch she saw into center field for a double and then reached third on a Peyton Heisey grounder and subsequent error that resulted in runners on first and third. A ground out by Kenzie Stewart allowed Treibley to score Warwick’s first run and moved Heisey to second where she was stranded when Evie Clugston went

The last concert of the month on June 27 will feature John Darrenkamp and Friends in a show titled “The Best of Broadway.” Darrenkamp has invited Kristin Sims, Amy Yovanovich, Kirsten C. Kunkle, Brenten Megee, Kevin Durkin, Christa Schimitsch, and Marisa Robinson to join him for an evening of both classic show tunes and more recent Broadway hits. There will be no concert on July Fourth due to the Independence Day holiday. On July 11, the Amy Banks Jazz Quartet will take part in the Lemonade Series for the first time. “(Banks) is a popular jazz artist from the area,” said Klink. Banks, accompanied by Steve Rudolph on the piano, will perform jazz favorites from the Great American Songbook. On July 18, Amy Yovanovich and Chris Seay will be featured. “Amy doesn’t need an introduction,” said Klink. “Whatever they do will be fabulous.” On July 25, Kay Kneisley, Lamar Dourte, Alice Lauver, and Noah Miranda will bring “The Music of Irving Berlin” to Highland. “We will perform ‘Alexander’s Ragtime Band,’ and the first
time it will just be Peggy Grabowski on piano and her husband, Don, on bass,” explained Kneisley, who added that a holiday medley including “Easter Parade,” “Happy Holiday,” and “White Christmas” will be performed. “We will probably end with ‘God Bless America,’” she noted. On Aug. 1, Vocal Harmonix and Harmony Revolution, featuring members of the Red Rose Chorus, will perform premier a capella music with a variety of choruses and quartets. “They are the local a capella barbershop musicians,” explained Klink, noting that the award-winning local chapter of the Sweet Adelines International will sing both wellknown traditional tunes along with newer selections. On Aug. 8, QuintEssentially Brass will bring its unique sound to the venue. “They’re entertaining,” said Klink. “They will march down the aisle with their trombones, and they’re fun.” The final concert of the season, which will be held on Aug. 15, will feature the Opera Lancaster Chorus with guest soloists John Darrenkamp, Laura Heydt, and Orin Struck. The chorus will be led by Christopher Hoster, who will bring along members of
the Reading-based group Opus One to enlarge the sound. Among the pieces Kneisley hopes the group will perform will be the “Chorus of the Hebrew Slaves,” “Humming Chorus,” and “The Anvil Chorus.” Funds raised by the concerts benefit OLA’s annual vocal competition and other OLA projects. It was such a fun group of teammates. “I am so proud of our team, shared Dietzel, who is a retired Lancaster Mennonite English and Bible teacher. “Since we are a small school and team - no JV or alternates like the other schools - we were the underdogs. Our team rallied and pulled together for this win. We focused on three things: Memory; Sense or Discernment, (such as) knowing when to buzz in early or not too late; and Dexterity, being quick on the trigger. It secured us the win. Interestingly, the coach from the Elizabethtown team, Tim Speigle, is a Lancaster Mennonite graduate and was taught by Dietzel. The Lancaster Mennonite team went to the National Academic Quiz Tournaments (NAQT) Quiz Bowl Tournament in Atlanta from May 24 to 26.
Lancaster Mennonite’s fifth-grade Quiz Bowl team was the runner-up in its Brainbusters competition. Team members included (from right) Joshua Reinford, Hasset Tesfaye, Nina Leiss, and Ryan Brenneman. This was the third year that the team has gone to nationals. One way to qualify for nationals is taking part in weekend tournaments with question packets supplied by NAQT that are timed and answered by the competing teams, with the top 10 percent from each team qualifying. Another way is through the league ranking; Lancaster Mennonite qualified for nationals by being ranked fourth in the Lancaster-Lebanon League. At nationals, the team ranked 232nd in the nation out of 336 teams. Additionally, Cairns, the only senior on the team, is ranked in the top 100 nationally, with his official ranking being 83rd out of more than 1,600 players at the tournament. In addition to the high school
team, Lancaster Mennonite’s fifth-grade Quiz Bowl team was the runner-up in Brainbusters against Elizabethtown. Students Hasset Tesfaye, Ryan Brenneman, Nina Leiss, and Joshua Reinford represented Lancaster Mennonite’s Hershey, Locust Grove, and New Danville campuses. Pictured on front:

Summer Youth Experience includes programs that are carefully selected for their benefits to students, specifically helping at-risk youths bridge the gap between the end of the spring semester and the return to school in the fall. This year, organizers hope to raise more than $15,000 to benefit the program. Harlan noted that being involved with Rotary and specifically with the event has shown him how people in the area respond when others are in need. “There’s something special about Lancaster County in the way groups like Rotary embrace the community,” he said. Harlan cited Summer Youth Experience as an example of how area residents reach out to others. “These programs can change the trajectory of someone’s life for the better,” he stated. “That’s incredible to see.” He is also grateful for the benefits of his Rotary experience, saying, “It has helped me grow as a person and a leader.” Readers who would like more information about the event may visit the Lancaster Rotary website. Specific questions may be directed to rotaryww5K@gmail.com.

Local Squadron from pg 1 31st Wing was the second in the nation to become active. Nationally, the organization includes 58,000 senior members - those age 21 and over - and youth members - people ages 12 to 20. The weekly cadet program focuses on military leadership, character development, and physical fitness. Greg Sollenberger, who serves as aerospace education officer for the squadron, said that the participating cadets are also offered a monthly aerospace class that includes lessons ranging from rocketry to orientation flights. “Each cadet builds a rocket from a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) kit,” said Sollenberger, who discusses a range of
aerospace-related topics with the cadets. CAP members may also be called upon to help locate missing aircraft and persons. The organization may be contacted by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency, or the Air Force Rescue Coordinator Center for disaster response. “When an aircraft goes down, it has a device that emits a radio signal,” explained Sollenberger, who added that getting a ground team together to trace the signal is one of the responsibilities of squadron members. Broad excitedly shared that a new drone program is about to change the way those searches

are handled. Broad’s latest job at the Wing level is to start a drone search program. “ We will be looking at aircraft that have crashed as observers, and we will be doing lost persons evaluations,” explained Broad, who held the first training session for 24 volunteers at Hawk Mountain the first weekend in May. Cadets who are 16 years or older may be trained and certified to use the drones as technicians or observers. “(The) drones will be used for emergency services, and they don’t go beyond our visual line of sight,” explained Broad. Broad said that the squadron is always in need of more adult volunteers. Volunteers must pass an extensive background check. “You can come in here with nothing but a desire to help cadets,” said Sollenberger, who added that training will be provided. CAP has the largest fleet of single-engine Cessnas in the world, boasting more than 550 aircraft. Squadron 304 does not yet own a plane, but members are hoping to procure one in the near future. The organization currently raises funds by parking cars at a number of local events, including the Lititz Craft Show, Community Days held at the airport in August, and at the Rough and Tumble Museum and Hospice auction. Participation Support is a service which provides opportunities for individuals to participate in their community and build interest in and enhance skills for competitive, integrated employment. Legislators also learned about the current shortage of qualified direct support professionals (DSPs), who provide daily handson support for Pennsylvanians with intellectual disabilities and autism. Currently, Friendship Community is seeking people interested in working with individuals to develop their capabilities in several unique ways. Information was also provided about funding issues and the impact of regulations and requirements. Friendship Community CEO Gwen Schuit emphasized the importance of relationships, one of the four key values at Friendship Community. Friendship Community is a faith-based organization that has been cultivating capabilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism in Lancaster and Lebanon counties since 1972. The organization has three day programs, a home-based services program, Lifesharing, and 26 residential homes serving more than 200 individuals in the two counties. Library Sets “That Fabulous Franklin” As part of the Summer Reading Program, Family Stages will present “That Fabulous Franklin” on Monday, June 17, at 6:30 p.m. at Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. The production is a presentation of the wit and wisdom of Benjamin Franklin. Family Stages traces its development back to 1980, when Elise and Steve Seyfried settled in Philadelphia after completing a one-andone half year tour of the northeastern U.S. with an educational program for schools. In Philadelphia, the Seyfrieds began performing their own two-actor, story theater plays as duet productions. Shows included “The Wizard of Oz,”
“Peter Pan,” “Cinderella,” and “Alice in Wonderland.” The Seyfrieds now have a list of more than 40 scripts for family and school audiences. In 1982, the couple founded the Rehoboth Summer Children’s Theatre on the Delaware Shore. As the demand for programs in Pennsylvania and Delaware grew, additional actors joined the company. Then children’s theater camps and classes were added. Eventually the company was established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and renamed Family Stages. The program is geared for children age 5 and up. To register, readers may visit the library or call 717-626-2255.

Concert To Benefit Local Family The McAllister Family Benefit Concert will take place on Saturday, June 22, at 6:30 p.m. in the sanctuary at Real Life Church of God, located at the corner of State and Lemon streets in East Petersburg. The concert will feature a variety of music from solo artists and groups. The McAllister family has been coping with early onset dementia and mental issues and is also facing a recent diagnosis of brain lesions in their adult son Patrick. Due to his condition, he has been unable to work. On Saturday, June 29, the family plans to leave for the Mayo Clinic in Rochester,
Minn. to pursue further diagnosis and treatment options. The concert will feature opportunities to donate and to learn more about the circumstances facing the family. The goal of the concert is to raise $1,000 to offset some of the initial costs. In addition to organizing the concert, the East Petersburg Area Civic Center (EPACC) and some local churches are also working toward identifying potential ongoing support services. Those who are unable to attend may use the GoFundMe link on EPACC’s Facebook page or call 717454-3723 and leave a voicemail.
