Lititz Historical Society’s Antiques Show never gets old Supporting Warwick School District

Notall things age equally. Some things become better with age. Some things become more valuable with age.

On Friday, June 23, and Saturday, June 24, at the Warwick Middle School, 104 Maple St., Lititz, the Lititz Historical Foundation will renew the staging of its annual Antiques Show for a 60th time. The hours for the show are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

There is an admission fee associated with the event, but parking is free.

“It’s not only the oldest antique show in the area, (but) it’s also Lancaster County’s only antiques show,” said Lititz Historical Foundation president Cory Van Brookhoven. “It’s not crafts, and it’s not yard sale items.

People have different definitions of what an antique is. Our show is high-end collectibles that go for hundreds, thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars.”

Overall, 50 dealers from Lancaster County and surrounding areas will offer a wide range of antiques, ranging from farm items, stoneware, kitchen goods, textiles, early lighting and transfer ware to doll items, coin silver, holiday items, Pennsylvania folk art, quilts, primitives and old signage. Hot food and cool drinks will also be available for purchase.

“It’s got a great reputation,” said Van Brookhoven. “That’s what keeps bringing people back. We have people coming from up and down the East Coast. We have dealers

coming from up and down the East Coast. The show’s organizer does a great job of bringing in a variety of high-quality items.”

Several hundred people are expected to attend the show.

“I’d say it’s mostly collectors,” said Van Brookhoven. “They have an appreciation for these things. There aren’t too many people who buy and sell.”

The Lititz Historical Foundation

receives no government funding and conducts 12 fundraisers throughout the year to finance its mission of protecting, preserving and promoting local history. Van Brookhoven said that fundraisers like the Antiques Show provide a “pretty big percentage” of the foundation’s general operating budget.

“It keeps things low-priced,” said Van Brookhoven. “It keeps our

Todd Rucci cares deeply and leads with his heart.

That type of commitment produces actions that ultimately lead to service. And what Rucci chooses to serve are his community and education and children.

Rucci has been a school board member in the Warwick School District for 14 years, and he is currently president of the ninemember board. It’s a volunteer position and an elected position, and there’s a lot more to it than simply attending a couple of meetings a month.

“My wife and I grew up in the sports world, and we’ve always tried to help the team,” said Rucci. “We’ve always taken the approach, ‘You get in and help, or you keep your mouth shut.’ I just want to do everything I can to help. My kids had an amazing experience in the Warwick School District, and that doesn’t happen everywhere. It’s personal to me. I want to help.”

School board members like Rucci are concerned citizens, community members whose most important role may be to hire a district’s superintendent, who in turn hires other administrators and teachers. Ultimately, school board members rely on the people they put in charge to help guide them as they

A special connection

Aaron’s Acres campers have chance to “horse around” at GMTRC

“Describing the emotional connection between a horse and a human is hard to verbalize, but it’s easy to witness,” said Jennifer Rummel, executive director at Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC), who has spent time as a buddy to visiting Aaron’s Acres campers. “A horse’s nonjudgmental nature, its ability to communicate without language, and its therapeutic movement are inviting to people with special needs.”

Most summers since July of 2011, a partnership between Aaron’s Acres, an organization that provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs ages 5 to 21 through a summer camp, has brought campers to the GMTRC facility in Leola to experience that unique connection with a therapy horse. During the visits, campers ride horses and learn about equine care to engage in sensory processing activities.

staff members, campers also have the opportunity to lead a horse through an obstacle course. “Volunteers and staff for both Aaron’s Acres and GMTRC work with the campers to help them with the obstacle course as well as other activities,” said Rummel, who noted that activities include a scavenger hunt, a painting activity, equine grooming and care, and on-lead adaptive horseback riding. “(The activities are) based on each camper’s individual abilities and

needs,” noted Rummel, who added that GMTRC will use about 10 volunteers to prepare for and carry out each of the six visits planned during the months of June and July. In 2022, more than 20 volunteers gave nearly 200 total hours to GMTRC during Aaron’s Acres’ visits. Aaron’s Acres also brings volunteers, along with program staff members and others to assist the campers.

According to Rummel, there is something “magical” about experiencing the interaction between a

child with unique abilities and a horse. She described watching a camper mount a horse named Violet for the first time. “(The camper) felt the connection instantly,” she recalled. “What made this moment even more special is that this camper’s brother, who also is different-abled, was there to witness that moment.”

Elaine Burnett, program director with Aaron’s Acres, said the organization is excited to partner with GMTRC again, noting, “The program staff and volunteers at GMTRC have

patience and understanding, which help them to support our participants where their needs are.” She added, During our time together, both the Aaron’s Acres staff and GMTRC volunteers bring smiles to the participants’ faces.”

Both Aaron’s Acres and GMTRC are nonprofit organizations that accept donations to offer opportunities and services. More information about GMTRC may be found at www.greystonemanortrc.org. More about Aaron’s Acres may be learned at www.aaronsacres.org.

make decisions that will affect the direction of the school district.

They hire education experts and then defer to that expertise. It’s a unique relationship that produces an interesting dynamic.

“I think the role of school board members sometimes gets confused,” said Rucci. “In short, we hire a superintendent and work on policies that guide the school district and where it goes. Each board is different. We operate as a group, not as individuals. But the superintendent and the administration run the district.”

Like his fellow school board members, Rucci holds down a day job. Rucci serves as the director of government relations for PAP Technologies.

“You have to have some ambition and motivation to (be a member of the school board),” said Rucci. “It’s real simple. Every decision we make comes down to, ‘Is it going to make our students at Warwick better?’ If it does, then let’s keep talking about it.”

“Honestly, I think we (board members) interact very well,” Rucci

Community blood drive set

added. “When we question each other, it’s not a bad thing. I have always encouraged working with different people with different views. Sometimes it gets a little heated, but that’s OK. We have a lot of great things going on, and we want to represent the community.”

The Warwick School District has always played a major role in the Lititz community.

“The Warwick School District is in the people-building business,” said Rucci. “Challenges aren’t a negative to me. That’s the whole reason we’re here. There are challenges at Warwick that make us better. It’s a continuation of self-reflection, as a board and a school district.”

“The people here are strong. They invest,” concluded Rucci. “We have active community members who have pride in Warwick. When you walk the streets of Lititz, Warwick is everywhere. Our students are engaged in the community.”

Local chorus wins awards, plans barbecue

Vocal Harmonix, a women’s a capella chorus in Lancaster County, participated in the regional competition through Sweet Adelines International from May 18 to 20. At the Atlantic Bay-Mountain Region 19’s Convention and Competition, Vocal Harmonix competed against 20 choruses and placed second in its division and second overall. The group will next travel to Louisville in October to compete in the Sweet Adelines International Competition. The chorus previously participated in the international competition in September 2022, when the event was held in Phoenix. Vocal

Harmonix won fifth place in its division.

The chorus’s upcoming activities also include a Barbecue for Barbershop fundraiser, which will be held on Saturday, June 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 100 W. Airport Road, Lititz, the site of the former Hoss’s restaurant. Pulled pork and halfchicken dinners from Hresko’s BarB-Q Pit will be for available for purchase. A portion of the proceeds will support Vocal Harmonix. Meals can also be ordered for donation to someone in need through the Lancaster Community Meal Program. Find out more and order tickets at

Event to aid fight against Alzheimer’s

An event recognizing the Longest Day 2023 will take place on Wednesday, June 21, at 7 p.m. in the West Bethany Chapel at Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The first-time event will feature poetry and harp music.

The Longest Day is observed on the summer solstice - the day with the most light - to represent shedding light in the fight against

the darkness of Alzheimer’s disease.

The event at Landis Homes will feature poetry by Audrey Kuhn, whose late husband, Bob “Mike” Kuhn, struggled with Alzheimer’s disease for 12 years until his death in early 2022. Audrey began writing poetry as a way to express her emotions while she was separated from her husband during the pandemic. This separation began on

March 11, 2020, when Bob’s skilled nursing facility was closed to visitors, and continued for 264 days until he was again able to be cared for at home. At the encouragement of others, Audrey is considering publishing her work.

The upcoming event will also feature harp music from Cass Jendzurski, a Professional Certified Healthcare Musician who has frequently played music for resi-

dents of the skilled nursing facility and people nearing the end of life. Jendzurski is also an instructor and will be joined in the June 21 performance by student Joanna Sadler.

The program is open to the public without cost. Donations will be accepted to benefit the Alzheimer’s Association. For more information, contact Audrey Kuhn at 717-201-1572.

Donations needed for library’s new building

The Lancaster Public Library is continuing its Fabulas Campaign to help fund its new building, which will officially open on June 27. As of May, the organization still needed to raise $600,000 of the $10 million required for the project.

In its new location, the library will anchor the first two floors of the Christian Street Parking Garage, facing Barney Ewell Plaza in the 100

block of North Queen Street. The library’s new home will be larger, brighter and more accessible, and it will feature updated technology and spaces and resources designed for today’s library patrons. The library will feature more usable space, children’s and young adult areas, program spaces and meeting rooms, Wi-

Fi and an outdoor terrace. Additionally, the new Business and Reference Center and its professional librarians will continue to provide free access to databases and other information to serve local businesses.

The library’s services range from story times and STEM programs for kids to job-hunting resources for

adults.

For information on specific naming or recognition opportunities, contact Jamie Hall at jhall@lancasterpublic library.org or 717-394-2651, ext. 119. Additional information about the campaign is available at www.lancasterpubliclibrary.org/ fabulas.

Manheim Church Softball League marks 50 years

The Manheim Church Softball League will celebrate its 50th year of slow-pitch softball on Saturday, June 24, with fun for the whole family. The celebration will take place at the league’s main field, the pool field located adjacent to Manheim Central High School, 400 E. Adele Ave.

“We’re calling this All-Star Saturday,” said Mike Givler, president of the league. “We’ll have two allstar games as well as a home run derby and a reunion game.”

The reunion game will kick off the festivities at 2 p.m. “This is open to alumni of the league, and it’s basically an old-timer’s game,” Givler said. “It’s an opportunity for players who no longer play to relive their glory days.” The first all-star game will be held at 3:30 p.m., followed by the

5 p.m. home run derby for church league players. The second all-star game will begin at 6:30 p.m.

“Each team is picking three allstars from their team for the games,” Givler explained.

Along with the games, a variety of food trucks will be on-site, with food available for purchase by donation. The expenses for the food trucks are being covered by an anonymous donor, Givler said, and all donations will benefit the Home on Ferdinand and Teen Central in Manheim.

There are currently 17 teams in the league, from churches in towns throughout the county, including Manheim, Elizabethtown, East Petersburg and Birdin-Hand. Although the league is celebrating its 50th anniversary of slow-pitch, it actually began 70 years ago as a fast-pitch league, Givler said, adding, “I believe we

museum free. It keeps the lights on. We’ve got two 18th-century buildings to care for.”

Initially introduced in 1963, the Antiques Show has never wavered in its purpose of funding the Lititz Historical Foundation’s endeavors. There are no indications that this purpose will be changing any time soon.

“The role has always been to raise money for the Lititz Historical Foundation,” said Van Brookhoven.

“Over the years we’ve changed venues a couple of times, but it’s thrived. It’s always been our biggest fundraiser. I think part of that is its reputation.”

“I don’t see many changes to it in

are one of the longest continually running softball leagues in the state.”

Over the years, the league has produced a few famous alumni, including Chris Heisey, who played Major League Baseball for the Cincinnati Reds, Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Nationals from 2010 to 2017.

Givler, who typically plays an infield position, also serves as a league umpire and has been a member of the league since 1985.

“I like to compete, but I also like the fellowship and camaraderie of the players and churches,” he said.

He also credits the league’s longevity to the support of a group of volunteers. “This league doesn’t happen year after year without lots of people helping,” he stated.

“From making schedules, to the umpires, to having the teams ready to go night after night, there

are just so many great people in this league.”

All-Star Saturday is an opportunity to not only focus on the league and its history, but also honor the game and give back to the community, Givler said. “It’s going to be a great community event, with good food and fun,” he stated. “You’re going to see some really talented softball players, and you’ll be able to see some players from yesteryear try to shake off the rust and come out and play.”

Montessori students complete AI workshop, children’s books

Open Montessori, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing hands-on educational experiences, has announced the completion of a five-day workshop on artificial intelligence (AI) and authorship for seventh- and eighth-graders at New School Montessori in Lancaster.

The workshop, held from April 24 through 28, focused on how new generative tools, including ChatGPT and Midjourney, can be used in the creative process of writing and illustration. During the workshop, students tested a variety of AI-enabled platforms and discussed how these technologies might impact their future academic and professional careers. Despite many concerns and unknowns about the implications of AI in society, the young students took an optimistic approach to the topic, exploring ways that A.I. might be incorporated into their creative workflow.

After studying the building blocks of good storytelling, each student authored and illustrated his or her own 24-page children’s book with the help of AI in just two days. The books were then printed and presented to friends and families at an open house on April 28.

Praising the students for their efforts were Bob Witmer, a representative from White Oak, which donated its services to print all of the students’ books and book covers; Robyn Stearne, the head of school at New School Montessori; and Tim Austin, director of Open Montessori.

For more information about Open Montessori and New School Montessori, visit www.openmontessori.org and www.newschool.net, respectively.
