Lancaster Snapshot is an online initiative designed to encourage Lancaster County residents to share photos of people, places, and things they hold dear. “We are deeply interested in connecting people across any number of demographics,” said Aaron Spangler, communications manager with the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). “This idea was hatched in the midst of COVID-19 when we were literally and ideologically separated from each other,” he added, noting the project is focused on people introducing themselves by providing a snapshot as a way to a shared connection. “We wanted to tap into the humanness of each other,” said Tracy Cutler, executive vice president of LCCF.

Lititz recCenter To Hold Annual Triathlon In the summer of 2020, organizers at the Lititz recCenter took a risk and held the annual triathlon in early August. Limiting the event to 175 participants, social distancing during the swim portion, and sanitizing the transition area were precautions taken for the event. “Last year, (the triathlon) was successful,” said Simon Ababou, fitness director with the rec center. Calling it “the best event ever,” Ababou said that both participants and spectators enjoyed the triathlon. “People were so happy (because they had been) bored at home,” he explained. The 2021 triathlon, which requires participants to swim 300 meters in the Lititz Springs outdoor pool, bike 15.8 miles through the farmland surrounding Lititz, and run 3.1 miles, will be held on Sunday, Aug. 8, starting at 8 a.m. As in the past, the event will be held at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz.
Organizers of the triathlon encourage participants to sign up in teams, so that families and friends can enjoy the event together. Teams made up of employees from local businesses or fellow church members are encouraged to participate. Ababou noted that employers are welcome to sponsor employees in the event. Teams may consist of up to three people as long as all events are completed. Ababou would especially like to see families participate as teams. “The goal is to provide time for family to bond by doing something together,” he said, noting that participating as a team gives family members a chance to develop a healthy lifestyle. As an example, one parent could bike, another could run, and a child could take part in the swimming event. The minimum age to take part in the swimming portion is 12 if the youngster is part of a team and 16 otherwise.

The biblical story of creation will come to life when Ruhl’s United Methodist Church hosts a drivethrough event on Saturday, June 26. The festivities will take place at the church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, from 10 a.m. to noon. Over the past year, the church has held several well-attended drivethrough celebrations, said Kris Gray, one of the event organizers. “We did a drive to Bethlehem at Christmas and a drive to Calvary at Easter, and they were so well received, we wanted to do something similar,” she stated. “We were brainstorming ideas, and God laid it on my heart to do a creation event.” Gray declined to give too many details about the stations that will be featured, noting that organizers want to keep an element of surprise. “There will be seven stations, and I will say there aren’t many people involved in the scenes since people weren’t created until day six, so we won’t have a lot of costumed characters like we’ve had for past drivethrough events,” she revealed. Along with the creation scenes, the event will feature live music by the church’s praise band. A free bag lunch will also be offered. The lunch
will include a ham and Swiss cheese sandwich, a bag of chips, fruit and a dessert. Reservations are required for the bag lunch and may be made by calling 717-665-4499. The deadline for reservations is Thursday, June 24. Reserved lunches will be brought to each vehicle at the end of the drivethrough event. Although reservations are required for the lunch, the drive-through is open to anyone. Gray said the creation event offers the church another way to reach out to its neighbors and share the message of God’s love. “We want to connect with our community, and especially during COVID, the drivethroughs were a way we could do that and still work with the restrictions,” she stated. “Even though we weren’t able to meet the community in person as a large group, we still wanted to connect with a message about the Gospel and provide food for the community. It’s important for us as a church to meet the needs of people both spiritually and physically.” Ruhl’s United Methodist Church holds services on Sundays at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday school is offered for people of all ages, including adults, at 9:15 a.m. The church will hold a vacation Bible school from Monday, July 26, through Friday, July 30.

something they shared in their snapshot or something else they care about,” said Spangler. In the future, the organization hopes to make the site even more interactive so that participants can communicate directly with each other. Cutler explained that it is a mission of LCCF to help achieve goals that are on the hearts of the people in Lancaster County. “We are connecting and investing in things people care about so those things can continue in the long term,” she said, noting that the project encourages reflection on things that are really important to people. “Our role is coming alongside people to help support their passions,” she explained. Spangler noted that the project takes a different approach to fostering connection. “What’s unique about Snapshot is that we’re focusing on the ways that we care about the community,” he said. “It’s not just my interests, but these are the things I want to sustain. That’s a stronger way to start relationships.” He stated that he has been impressed by the positive way community members have reacted to Lancaster Snapshot. “(It keeps me hopeful) when people say, ‘I would love to connect with the community,’” he said.

Those who wish to take part may visit www.lancastersnapshot.com, where they will be asked to submit answers to up to five questions using photographs. Spangler noted that participants may answer as few or as many questions as they wish. The questions are: Where do you live? What’s your favorite spot in Lancaster County? What’s one of your favorite things or possessions? What keeps you hopeful? What’s something you want to last forever? “The idea was to keep the questions open to get a varying degree of interpretation,” said Spangler, who noted there is space for a short caption. “There is no one way to answer these questions.” Participants will be able to visit the site, which includes a map of the county, to see their answers along with the answers of other participants. “You can zoom in (on a map) to see people’s entries,” explained Spangler, who noted that place specificity was important to see not only faces, but where people are in the county and the community. Cutler explained that the program, which went live on June 11, will run for about 12 weeks. On a regular basis, LCCF will choose random participants to receive $500 to invest in a cause or project that is important to them. “It may be

Making Connections - The Warwick To Ephrata Rail Trail BY ANN MEAD ASH
Ron Stief, program director for the Lititz recCenter, is a fan of the Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail. “My wife and I ride it a couple times a month,” said Stief, who lives in Lititz. “We do the 8-mile ride … grab a piece of pizza in Ephrata and do the ride back. It’s a cool way to spend a weekend afternoon.” Stief likes the opportunity to visit Ephrata as well. “It gets me to a restaurant in Ephrata I might never go to,” he said. That spirit is behind Stief’s wish to open the trail to downtown Lititz via a connection on Oak Street. While that dream is still a few years off, cyclists and others can follow Lititz streets from Oak to Front Street and to Lititz Springs Park. The trail opened in 2018 with the completion of a bridge that
spans the stream where Warwick and Ephrata townships meet. “It was a nice ceremony to officially connect the two 4-mile sections to make it 8 miles,” said Stief. He noted that the trail reaches into three communities, connecting Warwick and Ephrata by passing through Akron. Part of the trail in Warwick is paved. It changes to gravel and then back to pavement in Akron. Stief pointed out that the gravel area is not plowed following winter storms. “Crosscountry skiers can use it,” he said, adding that a number of Lititzarea residents enjoy the sport and that the usage makes it a fourseason trail. Stief estimates that trail usage is split about 50/50 between cyclists and pedestrians, including runners, hikers, and walkers. There is a bike share facility located at the Warwick Township Municipal

Campus along the trail and run by Bike Works of Lititz. “You can get a two- or four-hour rental,” said Stief, who added that the transaction can be completed online at www.lititzbikeworks.com/rental /railtrail. “You can tell these bikes are getting used,” he said, pointing to the mud on the tires of one two-wheeled vehicle. The trail is open from dawn to dusk year-round with availability for walking, biking, and jogging. Horses and snowmobiles are prohibited. More information about the trail
may be found at https://warwick recreation.org/trails/wert. To ask specific questions, call 717-6265096, ext. 237. Looking around the parking lot at the Warwick Township Municipal Campus at 315 Clay Road, Lititz, Stief remarked on how much the trail is used by area residents. He noted that only about a half-dozen cars in the nearly full parking lot belong to township employees. “It’s 1:27 p.m. on a Tuesday, and I have seen four or five bikers and a handful of walkers,” he said.
fun that they bring to each rehearsal has been unbelievable, and it shows in the stories they are telling through each song,” he said. Calderon added that because the youths are willing to work and grow as performers, he has been able to push and challenge them further. “And they have risen to each occasion,” he noted. Performer Elle Herson, age 14, said that she hopes audiences enjoy the enthusiasm she and other performers put into the show. “It’s fun to work with others who enjoy using the stage as an avenue to connect with other people,” she said. Servant Stage offers performances on a pay-what-you-will basis as part of the organization’s mission to make the arts accessible to all community members. To learn more about the organization or reserve tickets, readers may visit www.servantstage.org or call 717-455-0255.

The community is invited to attend Brickerville United Lutheran Church’s old-fashioned picnic on Saturday, July 3, from 3:30 to 8 p.m. The picnic will take place at the church’s shaded grove, located at 340 E. 28th Division Highway, Lititz. This year’s theme is “A Concert in the Park,” and the event will honor all veterans and active-duty military members. The Ringgold Band of Reading, now in its 169th year, will provide entertainment. Starting at 5 p.m., the band will perform three sets, with the outer two being modeled after the traditional format of a concert in the park. Gustav Holst’s First Suite in E-flat and a 19th-century overture will be featured. The band will also play music from Broadway and the movies, vocal solos, marches, and music by Benny Goodman and Jimmy Webb. The middle set, which will begin shortly after 6 p.m., will have a patriotic theme. It will feature the music

Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of foods will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m. Items that will be sold at the auction include flowers and plants, toys, barbecue apparatus, carriages, swing sets, sheds, and quilts made at Caring Hearts, which will be sold at 4 p.m. A garage, which will be built on location for the winner, will also go up for bids. Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, breakfast logs, and coffee. Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fruit cups, french fries, and soft pretzels. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out, and a drive-through food pickup will be available. The centers offer a variety of activities for students. Sarah Fisher, one of five teachers at Sunny Sunbeam, said that the students gather at 9:30 a.m. for devotions each day the center is open. They also spend time singing and sharing news from their individual homes. During recess, they enjoy a yard next to the center. Students also help to mow the lawn or tend the flower beds. In addition to packaging the clothespins, the students make keychains, Lifesaver dolls, baby beads, covered clothes hangers, grape teethers, and other gift items that are sold. During the school year, lessons focus on reading, flashcards, telling time, memory verses, money, and more. Students bring their lunches, or a designated teacher makes lunch. On nice days lunch is eaten outside. Those who would like to donate items to the sale may call 717-768-8497, 717-3542380, or 717-768-7417. Civil Air Patrol Cadets Honored By VFW
They’ll Be “Singin’ In The Rain” At Cavod Camp
Two teenage cadet members of Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) have been recognized by the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). 1st Lt. Jurnee M. Acosta was named Outstanding Officer, and Technical Sgt. Collin J. Stritch was named Outstanding Non-Commissioned Officer. They received medals and certificates on May 15 from Bruce McCullough, commander of the Lititz Springs VFW Post 1463. The ceremony was held during an extra meeting of Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 at the Venture Jets hangar at Lancaster Airport. Acosta joined CAP in 2017 and serves as the squadron’s cadet commander. She received the Gen. Billy Mitchell Award in 2020; has attended two encampments at Fort Indiantown Gap, in 2017 and 2019; and has received one of nine orientation flights in CAP corporate aircraft. She also has two brothers in the CAP cadet organization. Outside CAP, Acosta is a licensed cosmetologist and attends Lancaster Bible College, where she is majoring in health care management and maintains a 3.7 grade point average. Stritch is the element leader for new recruits and the cadet recruiting non-commissioned officer. Since joining in 2019, he has also flown in one orien-

tation flight and was awarded the Wright Brothers Achievement Award in 2020. He recently participated in the Air Force-authorized Philadelphia Vaccine Management mission. He is currently a freshman at Lancaster Catholic High School, where most of his classes are honors courses. He is active in music and serves as an athletic trainer. The squadron offers a Cadet Program for young men and women ages 12 to 21, as well as an Emergency Services and Aerospace Education Program for its members and the public. When COVID restrictions are lifted, members of the public may attend meetings and learn what CAP has to offer. The meetings begin at 7 p.m. most Mondays at the
Venture Jets hangar off Millport Road at Lititz Pike. The squadron is named for local aviation pioneer and wartime CAP member Jesse Jones. CAP is the official auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force. It is involved in search-and-rescue missions, homeland security, disaster relief, drug interdiction missions, aerospace education and mentoring through its Cadet Programs. With free teacher membership, educators can receive free STEM kits from the U.S. Air Force. Visit www.gocivil airpatrol.com/programs/aerosp ace-education/for-educators for more details. Pennsylvania’s venomous snake season runs from June 12 through Saturday, July 31. With this season in mind, Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary has created a YouTube video encouraging people to watch out for snakes and informing them about the reptiles. Rothacker stresses that snakes are not easy to see, often do not want to hurt people, and do not want to be stepped on. To view the video, search for “Copperheads and Roller Skates” on www.youtube.com. The Forgotten Friend Reptile TV channel on YouTube has a number of other informational videos, as well.

It’s a natural extension of the New Holland-based nonprofit’s mission, Dienner said. “Our slogan is, ‘Create With Purpose,’” she stated. “The strength of Cavod is believing in the abilities of all people and pulling out their God-given talent.” Dienner stressed that the camp is open to anyone, regardless of theater background. “You don’t need any experience,” she said. “Everyone is very supportive, and our team is very friendly. If anyone is shy going into camp, it’s amazing to see how the kids come out of their shell during camp. The parents will be amazed when they see the show.” A discounted camp rate will be offered through Thursday, July 1. For more information on the camp, visit https://cavod.org or call 717-354-3355.

Faith, fun and fellowship will take center stage when Cavod Academy hosts a theater camp at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Campers will perform “Singin’ in the Rain Jr.” and will spend two weeks learning all about live theater while making friends, said Connie Dienner, executive director. “The camp is a chance for the campers to learn how to work together to create a show from start to finish,” she noted. “They really bond during camp. It’s a great
time for friendship and relationship building.” The camp is open to youths ages 10 to 18 and will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays from Monday, Aug. 2, through Thursday, Aug. 12. On Friday, Aug. 13, the camp will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. At the end of the camp, the campers will put on a full production, complete with costumes, lighting and music; performances will be held at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 14, and Sunday, Aug. 15. Freddie Mac Honors Northwest Bank Freddie Mac recently announced the winners of its Home Possible RISE (Recognizing Individuals for Sustained Excellence) Awards. Northwest Bank earned the Home Possible RISE Award in the Home Possible RISE Award for New Originator category. An annual program, RISE salutes Freddie Mac’s top clients across multiple categories for excellence with the Home Possible mortgage, Freddie Mac’s lending solution for very low- to low-income homebuyers. In 2020, Northwest Bank made homeownership possible for more than 195 families across Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and Indiana through the Home Possible mortgage. The Home Possible RISE Awards combine volume from national Home Possible and Home Possible Advantage mortgage options. Lenders must be active Freddie Mac sellers/servicers, and correspondent lenders and brokers must originate through those sellers/servicers. Freddie Mac reviewed 2020 data and recognized the top organizations in several categories. The complete list of the award winners is available at www.FreddieMac.com/Home Possible/RISE.
