Fireworks, Music, And Fun! By Ann Mead Ash

“This year’s theme is family fun,” said Holly DeKarske, executive director of Venture Lititz and co-chair of this year’s July Fourth celebration with Lititz Springs Park, along with park board of trustees member Kellye Martin. The 202nd festival, which will be held on Thursday, July 4, will feature live music, special entertainment for children, a designated space for teenagers, an Eagles tribute band, and a chance to relax with family and friends in Lititz

Springs Park, 18 N. Broad St., Lititz. The gates to the park, on Broad Street in Lititz, will open at noon on July 4. Master of ceremonies duties this year will be performed by Jenna Martorana, who has experience as the 2019 Miss Liberty Bell. “She was formerly Miss Red Rose City 2018,” said Martin. “We are very excited to have Jenna be an integral part of the celebration in Lititz.” Opening ceremonies will be held at 1:30 p.m. Activities will begin in the KidsZone at 12:30 p.m. with a performance by Papa Tater, followed

by a Springs Park Playhouse show at 2 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., children will be treated to the music of Ian Carroll. “He is a one-man band,” said DeKarske, who added that the interactive entertainer will bring bongos and tambourines so that children can take part in the show. Aware that many young people attend the event, organizers will set up an area specifically for teenagers and young adults. “The Lawn is a new area that we are adding this year,” noted Martin, who relayed that the new space is a response to feedback from the community. “The Lawn See Fourth Of July pg 5

Bill Cole Named Railroad Museum Volunteer Of The Year

By Ann Mead Ash

By Ann Mead Ash

“I am a model railroader,” said Bill Cole proudly. “I love trains all the time.” A man who first fell in love with trains when he received one for Christmas at the age of 5 growing up in Minnesota could not resist visiting a railroad museum after moving to Lancaster. But making just the occasional visit to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, became a thing of the past when Cole retired. Instead, after picking up a volunteer brochure around 2012, Cole signed on to work in the museum archives. One day a week, he scans and catalogs photo collections and helps prepare documents and photos for sale. See Railroad Museum pg 6

Bill Cole of Lancaster was formally recognized as the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania Volunteer of the Year at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission ceremony in Harrisburg on April 27.

When Lisa Colon’s son, Isreali, went to Army boot camp in 2016, Lisa looked for other area mothers who would understand that experience and offer answers and support. “I have a friend at church whose son was in the Marines, but he was out by then,” said Lisa. When Isreali was stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., Lisa found an online group called Fort Riley Mothers of Soldiers made up of women who supported each other. Some of the members of the Fort Riley group were part of National Blue Star Mothers of America Incorporated, a group of mothers who have children currently serving or who are veterans. “(National Blue Star Mothers) was founded in 1942 when someone put an See Blue Star Mothers pg 7

The hugs started almost as soon as the members of Vocal Harmonix gathered at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, for a rehearsal on June 10. One woman had recently received a cancer diagnosis. Another had returned from traveling. Yet another had had surgery. Whether the reason was positive or upsetting, the embraces abounded. “We’re a very caring group,” one member explained after the rehearsal concluded, again with hugs, this time for the group’s newest member, who was voted in that night. “Our sisterhood is very strong,” agreed director Lori Jo Whitehaus. “This is like a big family.” Currently, members range in age from early 20s to 91, and while there is a rigorous audition process to get in, it is unheard of to be kicked out, one octogenarian said. Formerly the Red Rose City Chorus, Vocal Harmonix (VHMX) adopted its new name in January 2018 to differentiate it from the Red Rose Men’s Cho-

rus and to reflect the fact that membership is not restricted to Lancaster city residents. In fact, members come from Lancaster, Chester, Dauphin, Berks, York, and Cumberland counties. Whitehaus explained that membership is skill-based rather than attendance-based, so it is not necessarily a hardship if folks are unable to attend every Monday evening rehearsal. Each song the group performs has a rehearsal track so that choir members can perfect their parts at home. To ensure a near-perfect sound, each member is required to record herself singing her parts and send the recordings to her section leader for approval. The group’s hard work has paid off over the years. Most recently, VHMX placed third overall and first in the midsize division in Region 19 competition and is waiting to receive an invitation to compete at the international contest that will be held in Louisville, Ky., next year. Additionally, quartets composed of VHMX members finished eighth and 13th out of approximately 50. During the recent rehearsal, Whitehaus reported that the chorus will be ordering pins to commemorate that

VHMX scored more than 600 points in adjudication. She noted that 800 is a perfect score and, like the SAT, is difficult to achieve. Leading a chorus to score more than 600 designates Whitehaus as a master director in Sweet Adelines International (SAI), which is the largest women’s singing organization in the world. VHMX has been affiliated with SAI since 1961. A few VHMX members are part of the SAI leadership team. SAI choirs - VHMX included specialize in unaccompanied, or a capella, singing. VHMX is an a capella show chorus, with a style that is close to musical theater. The group sings a number of barbershop-style songs, but its repertoire is not restricted to that style. All of its music is performed from memory, and each piece is carefully choreographed. The group accepts performance gigs, including singing telegrams on select holidays. “We’d love it if people need entertainment, they’d think of Vocal Harmonix,” Whitehaus said. VHMX will participate in the Lititz Fourth of July Parade on Wednesday, July 3, and sing the

national anthem at a Barnstormers game on Thursday, Sept. 5. The group will also perform as part of Opera Lancaster’s Lemonade Concert Series on Thursday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. During that concert, VHMX will join Harmony Revolution, featuring members of the Red Rose Men’s Chorus, on several pieces. On the four Mondays leading up to the Aug. 1 concert - July 8, 15, 22, and 29 - at 7 p.m., folks who are interested in VHMX are welcome to attend rehearsals, where they can learn to sing a modern arrangement of Ella Fitzgerald’s “Misty.” “We’ll be teaching what we do,” Whitehaus said. “They can sing with us when we sing with the men without joining us.” New members are welcome at any time. Folks who would like more information may visit www.vocalharmonix.org or email vocalharmonix@gmail.com. Pictured on front: Award-win-

Other gates … will begin closing as early as 8 p.m.” Attendees will make their way to the field at about 8 p.m. so that park staff and volunteers can secure a safety area inside the park. “Maple Street will be closed to vehicles all day on July 4,” added Martin. “This will allow … guests to exit the field out onto Maple Street.” Martin emphasized that detailed maps, instructions, signage, and additional volunteers will be available to help attendees with questions. “We are always looking for more volunteers,” added Martin.

This year, registration for the parade will be held at 12:30 p.m., and the parade and judging will begin at 1:30 p.m. Baby parade winners will be announced at the band shell at 1:45 p.m. The July Fourth celebration in Lititz is known for live musical performances, and this year will be no exception, with several bands and other entertainers lined up for the event. The BANDALOW will play in the band shell at 2:15 p.m., and the Lititz Community Band will perform at 3:30 p.m. A tribute band called Best of the Eagles will play in the band shell at 5:30 p.m. Following the tribute band, the entertainment will move to the field at the Lititz recCenter, where the band Nearly York will play at 8:15 p.m., followed by a FUN 101.3

generations,” he said, noting that it will be important to keep up with technical advancements. “Right now, we are putting it on a hard drive, but we will have to keep moving it,” he said. In addition to recognizing the significance of the work, Cole enjoys the benefits as only a model railroader can. “The archives gave me a chance to see pictures of real trains in their environments, and I can translate that into miniature,” said Cole. “Model railroaders are out there looking at the real world to convert it to miniature.” Cole’s second day per week at the museum is devoted to the Pennsylvania Landscapes layout. “This layout is 18 years in the making,” explained Cole. The model layout offers a variety of scenes associated with the Pennsylvania landscape. “If you were traveling back in 1950 throughout Pennsylvania, these are the scenes you would see,” said Cole, who pointed out cities, railyards where trains that hauled were built, and a big city station that includes a window to the locations and happenings located underground. The layout also includes farmlands, rolling hills, mountains, and a mining town. “Here are the company-owned homes,” said Cole pointing to the row of similar houses. The layout has been a labor of love for Cole. “It was almost completed when I started volunteering here,” he said, noting that the trains on the layout were stopping unexpectedly and refusing to move. “I spent time rewiring the whole thing to reduce the complexity so it would run smoothly,” he said, adding that the layout is more detailed than others at the

“You can’t just turn it on and leave it.” Fortunately for both Cole and the museum, the digital command control system for the layout is the same one Cole uses for the layout in his home basement in Lancaster. Cole noted that he has created layouts using a number of different train models and gauges over his years in model railroading. The first train he received was a Lionel Hudson 464 steam engine. “It was a big heavy thing,” recalled Cole. “It had a whistle, and it was originally for the Christmas tree, but I built a layout.” Because Cole is also a woodworker, he soon traded the train for a jigsaw. “That was the end of my Lionel train, but I got into HO size,” said Cole, who took over his father’s photo studio in the family basement for his first layout. HO did not hold Cole’s interest continually, however. “Fifteen years ago, the O-gauge trains were starting to get very sophisticated,” said Cole. “They had sound systems with realistic sounds,” he added, describing the chugging sounds and the noises of the compressors and the trains letting off steam. “They even had station announcements.” But O-gauge was eventually outdone again. “They started to miniaturize electronics and put them in HO, and I got back into that again,” said Cole with a chuckle. Cole was formally recognized as the museum’s Volunteer of the Year at the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission ceremony in Harrisburg on April 27. He will be honored again at the Railroad Museum’s annual Members’ Day banquet in Lancaster on Saturday, Sept. 28.

with Value Care Alliance (VCA) recently to promote a PatientDriven Payment Model (PDPM) Boot Camp presented by Stephanie Corbett, DHA, of HCPro. Skilled nursing facility participants located in Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee attended the program in preparation for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) post-acute care valuebased care management program, which begins in October 2019. Because a significant percentage of high intensity care is delivered in the post-acute care setting after discharge from the hospital, Kairos Health Systems and Value Care Alliance worked together to provide this program to prepare skilled nursing facilities to successfully meet the requirements of the PDPM program, which promotes meeting the increasing health care needs of patients with complex medical needs and providing the highest quality, satisfaction, and cost standards of care. Kairos worked with VCA to provide the HCPro PDPM Boot Camp for its post-acute care partners. The HCPro PDPM Boot Camp provided organizations with a comprehensive review of the service requirements necessary to prepare them for new higher acuity postacute care delivery models and develop a plan to prepare for participation with PDPM, bundled payments, and other payer valuebased care requirements. To learn more about the program and other value-based care services at Kairos, readers may contact admin@kairoshealthsystems.com or 717-509-9716. 2019 Parade of Homes Winners Announced

Blue Star Mothers from pg 1 Moms placed flags on the graves on May 25. At the ceremony, Rebekah Hill sang the national anthem, and James Reichenbach, president of Lancaster City Council, spoke about what military service meant to his family. Ray D’Agostino, who is retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, spoke about comrades who did not return, and how it felt knowing they had made the ultimate sacrifice. Between speakers, members of the Blue Star Moms read the names of America’s wars, including the time frame and number of casualties from each. Lisa spoke about how the number of roses created a visual of how many soldiers are buried in the cemetery, and she invited everyone present to place roses on veterans’ graves throughout the 22 acres of the cemetery. The service closed with a gun salute performed by VET 21 Honor Guard, the playing of taps, and a prayer. Lisa said that the Red Rose chapter has about a dozen members, but that the group is interested in growing. More information about the Red Rose Blue Star Moms may be found at www.redrosebluestarmoms.org or by searching for “Red Rose Blue Star Moms” on Facebook.

symbol of Lancaster County. The group currently meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in room 314 of Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Meetings are open to the public, and new members are welcome. The chapter began taking part in efforts such as Valentines for Vets, which provided cards to area veterans through the local Veterans Affairs office. Lisa added that the chapter is involved in a similar effort that sends birthday cards to deployed service members whose birth dates are provided by their parents. On Memorial Day, the chapter held its first event at Lancaster Cemetery. Called “A Rose for Every Stone Memorial Day Tribute,” the event featured live music, speakers, and more than 1,000 roses from the Memorial Day Flower Foundation. “We joined forces and raised more than $1,100 to place (roses) on the tombstones of 1,037 veterans in the Lancaster Cemetery,” said Lisa. A number of other local groups took part in the event, including the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard, AMVETS Post 19, Lancaster City Republican Committee, and Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. Lisa learned that no Blue Star Mothers group existed in Lancaster, and she reached out to the group’s national-level representatives. Armed with the information they sent and with the help of Dawn Wardell, a friend from Calvary Church where Lisa attends, Lisa set out to gather the five members she needed to charter a group. Word of mouth brought her the women she needed to designate the five officers, and the group submitted paperwork to the National Blue Star Mothers in September 2018. When they learned of a Lehigh Valley group within the 30-mile marker range, they had to ask that group’s permission to form. “(The Lehigh Valley group members) were excited for us,” said Lisa, who completed the charter over the phone with the national vice president and a former national president. “We became the founding mothers of the Red Rose Blue Star Moms,” said Lisa, who said the red rose was chosen as it is the
