Lititz Rec Schedules 2020 Triathlon By Ann Mead Ash

According to Ababou, attendance at the event has been growing. “Last year we had good participation with both teams and individuals, and we had more than 240 participants,” he said. Although team participation has increased in the last few years, this year more individuals have signed up. “We would like to see more teams (take part),” shared Ababou, who encouraged families to engage children who swim to participate. Ababou noted that a younger family member may complete the swimming portion for a parent. “This is a good chance to (develop) a healthy lifestyle,” he said. “(It’s a chance) for whole families to get moving See Triathlon pg 3

In light of COVID-19 restrictions, organizers of the Lititz recCenter’s annual triathlon event knew they would have to put extra consideration into whether this year’s triathlon would take place as scheduled. The decision was made in a meeting held at the Lititz recCenter on June 5, when the county went to the yellow phase of the state’s reopening plan. “We thought, ‘We will be green by Aug. 9,’” said Simon Ababou, fitness director with the rec center. With that positive thought in mind, the rec center has decided to hold its annual triathlon, which requires participants to swim 300 meters in the Lititz Springs outdoor pool, bike 15.8 miles through the farmland

When Lancaster County restaurant owners learned that outdoor service would be permitted, with restrictions, in the yellow phase of the process to reopen the county, many began thinking outside the box in order to create outdoor seating for their venues. Liz Concra, operations manager at Rooster Street Restaurant and Bar, located at 11 S. surrounding Lititz, and run 3.1 miles, on Sunday, Aug. 9, starting at 8 a.m. As in the past, the event will be held at the Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz. Organizers of the triathlon encourage participants to sign up in teams, so that families and friends can enjoy the event together. The minimum age to take part in the event is 14. Teams made up of employees from local businesses or fellow church members are encouraged to participate. Ababou noted that employers are welcome to sponsor employees in the event. The rec center has written to Lancaster County swim teams to apprise them of this opportunity. Ababou noted that the outdoor pool, located adjacent to the rec center, is currently being renovated, but it is slated to be ready for the triathlon.

Zhu is from Beijing, China, where she returned for the summer. In the fall, she plans to attend the University of California, Santa Barbara. She has not yet decided on a major. Kathy Ciaccia, LMHS art department director, called Zhu “a conscientious student who genuinely enjoyed creating things in art classes.” “She is a very delightful person,” said

Ciaccia. Each year since 1995, Landis Homes has selected a piece of artwork from the LMHS Spring Fine Arts Festival to become part of a permanent art collection at the retirement community campus. In return for the work, Landis Homes contributes to the Lancaster Mennonite School art department and awards funds to the recipient to help further his or her education. Landis Homes/Landis Communities is located at 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. Readers who would like more information on the retirement facility may visit www.landishomes.org or call 717-381-3550.

Brickerville United Lutheran Church has canceled its oldfashioned community picnic, which has been held annually for the past 132 years as part of the celebration of July Fourth. Organizers hope to resume the picnic in 2021.

717-625-0405, ext. 1001. Menus and other information about the restaurant may be found at www.roosterst.com. Currently, the restaurant offers disposable menus and counter service for the patio area. “We aren’t yet doing table service, but come inside to order, and we bring it out,” said Concra, who noted that it is necessary to wear a mask when entering the restaurant. Another change is a raised bed vegetable and flower garden that was added to the area between the stage and the street during the quarantine. “Some of the vegetables (from the garden) will be used in the restaurant,” said Concra. “There are herbs (growing, and) the basil will be used.” Concra said that the restaurant hopes to continue offering outside dining even as the county transitions into the green phase, when partial occupancy may be allowed in restaurants. “We hope to continue this as long as the borough allows,” she said.

The Warwick Education Foundation (WEF) recently donated $5,000 to the Lititz Warwick Community Chest, which runs the local food pantry. The WEF raised the $5,000 as part of the “Education Rocks the ’80s” fundraising gala, which was scheduled for March 20 then postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A muchreduced version of the silent auction was held as originally scheduled, only online. The board of directors decided the money should be used to encourage learning by supplying food. Lititz Warwick Community Chest reported it has experienced an increase in distributions of food from its pantry during the pandemic. Anyone in the Warwick School District who needs food can call the food pantry hotline at 717-627-0770. Anyone who wants to contribute nonperishable foods can drop them off at Lititz Warwick Community Chest at 200 W. Orange St.,

The parking lot directly behind the patio that was bordered by a garden festooned with Edison-style lights offered possibilities. “The owners contacted Tait Towers, who quickly came up with a stage to rent us,” said Concra, who noted that the structure is allowed by the borough under the special exemptions permitted in the aftermath of the shutdown. The stage accommodates eight tables, which were brought out from inside the restaurant, offering seating for 24. Across the parking lot, an area with a rug can accommodate three more tables for two. The outdoor area opened in the evenings in mid-June. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) invites the public to view an online display of plans for the Lincoln Road (Route 1024) superstructure replacement project. This project is located at the bridge that carries Lincoln Road over Hammer Creek at the border of Clay and Warwick townships, roughly 3 miles northeast of the Borough of Lititz. The purpose of this project is to address structural deficiencies of the bridge and provide continued safe and efficient crossing of Lincoln Road over Hammer Creek. The project consists of replacing the almost 50-yearold prestressed concrete beams and deck, as well as new approach pavement, rock scour protection, a guiderail, and minor drainage updates. The bridge will be maintained at its current width and will include two 11-foot lanes and 8-foot shoulders. The bridge will be closed to all traffic for approximately five months during construction. A detour will use Lincoln Road to Brunnerville Road/Clay Creek Road (Route1035) to Route 322. The Conestoga Trail, which runs parallel to Hammer Creek on the west bank, will be maintained for pedestrian traffic throughout construction. The project is currently in design, and construction work is expected to take place in the

2021 construction season. In accordance with Governor Wolf ’s COVID-19 mitigation efforts, displays of the plans will be online only. A digital version of the information is available to view online through Friday, July 10. Information, including roadway and bridge plans and an interactive comment form, can be found by visiting www.penndot.gov/District8, clicking on Construction Projects/Roadwork and then Public Meetings, and choosing the Lancaster County box and then the tile marked Lincoln Road Over Hammer Creek. The purpose of the display is to introduce the project and receive public input regarding any questions or concerns with the project. It is also an opportunity for the public to review and comment on the project’s potential effect upon cultural resources pursuant to the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation’s 36 CFR Part 800 regulations implementing Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The project documents can be made available in alternative languages or formats if requested. Anyone who needs translation/interpretation services or who has special needs or has special concerns that require individual attention may contact Derek R. Mitch, PennDOT project manager, at dmitch@pa.gov or 717-772-0034.

and create teams.” Teams may consist of up to three people as long as all events are completed. Triathlon activities range from sprint distances to Ironman events. Novice triathletes may want to start with a sprinttype event like the Lititz recCenter triathlon. Proper training, commitment, and nutrition are essential to accomplishing a sprint distance before moving on to longer triathlons. Participants will need a bike, a swimsuit, and running shorts. A bike helmet is required. Goggles, swim caps, bike shoes, spare tire tubes and a pump, sunglasses, sunscreen, running shoes, and a water bottle are suggested. According to Ababou,

Make Extra Money Renting Your Stuff! COVID-19 restrictions have made it difficult for people to train, but he added that now, people are anxious to be outside. “It’s good to get out,” he said. “This is a chance for us to get out and exercise.” Ababou noted that the benefits of exercise are many. “It’s good for us to keep our systems clean and strong, so we can fight diseases and viruses,” he said, adding that during the summer months it is important to stay hydrated. Readers who would like to take part in the triathlon may register at www.lititzrec.com. Individuals who have questions may call 717-626-5096, ext. 239, or email SimonAbabou @lititzrec.com.

VBS Is “Still Knit In God’s Love” distance learning. The program will run from Monday, July 13, to Friday, July 17, at participants’ convenience. They will be able to choose short activities that work for their time, interests, and technological abilities, such as videos, coloring pages, and crafts from an online list. A short review of finger knitting using shoestring licorice will be offered, and Slechta suggested that adults may want to obtain licorice or find other materials suitable for the craft in advance. For teenagers and adults, a study of “The Gift of Hard Things: Finding Grace in Unexpected Places” by Mark Yaconelli led by the Rev. Jack Esbenshade will take place via video call from 7 to 8 p.m. on July 13 to Thursday, July 16. Instead of a closing program on July 17, a video call featuring a Bible story bingo game has been planned. “No prizes, just having fun together, still knit in God’s love,” Slechta remarked. Slechta is eager to see how VBS comes together. “I can’t wait to see what all of the different pieces look like in the end,” Slechta said. “It is also fun to learn new things. We are having to learn to use technology that we have not had to use before. It is exciting to see how it is all part of how God can make good things come out of adversity.” Although VBS will be virtual, registration is requested and may be completed by visiting w w w. t r i n i t y e a s t p e t e . o r g / ministries/vbsrally-day/ or call-

Vacation Bible school (VBS) participants in 2019 learned finger knitting as part of the “Knit in God’s Love” curriculum at Trinity UCC in East Petersburg. This year’s VBS will build on that theme, but it will be offered via an online choice board. ing Trinity UCC’s office at 717-569-1632. Additionally, both churches provide online worship services, and anyone interested in learning more about the congregations may visit www.trinityeastpete.org or http://zionep.org.

The Lancaster County Conservation District and the Federated Sportsmen of Lancaster will host the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School for students ages 14 to 16. Rather than canceling the field school due to COVID-19 concerns, organizers have opted to restructure the program and host a virtual ex perience instead. The school will run from 9 to 11 a.m. daily on Monday to Friday, July 20 to 24. By redesigning programming, organizers are securing opportunities to help keep students involved and motivated. The virtual programming expands the reach of their conservation messaging because of increased capacity, allowing

more students to participate and also being available to those from outside Lancaster County or those who may have been hesitant to attend in person. Students who attend the virtual experience in 2020 still have the option to apply to attend the traditional program in 2021. Youth participants may miss the in-person camaraderie and camping each night at the Northern Lancaster County Game and Fish Protective Association, but they will still have access to educational experiences through virtual field trips and live-streamed activities and instruction. There is no cost, but registration is required. Youth Conservation School kits

At its most basic, knitting involves forming interlocking loops from a single length of yarn. This produces a strong, yet flexible fabric. Children who attended vacation Bible school (VBS) at Trinity United Church of Christ (UCC), 2340 State St., East Petersburg, last year, learned about how they are “Knit in God’s Love,” which was the week’s theme. This year’s VBS theme will build on that curriculum with the theme “Still Knit in God’s Love.” The concepts taught last year highlighted biblical examples of items being knit in God’s love: human bodies, communities, the Earth and all its creatures, and God’s presence in individuals’ days. The entire week was a demonstration of connection among community members as Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1905 Broad St., East Petersburg, collaborated with Trinity UCC to produce the event as it has in previous years. Additionally, the congregations’ respective prayer shawl ministries contributed to the VBS. The experienced crafters taught VBS attendees to knit, crochet, and finger knit during the week. The older children made pocket-size prayer shawls that were given as gifts to church members who were unable to leave their homes. The prayer shawl group members, their friends, and the VBS community

also made scarves and hats that were later distributed through community meals and the Lancaster Food Hub. “Trinity and Zion’s prayer shawl groups, ‘Knit in God’s Love’ and ‘Skeins and Scones,’ may not be able to meet at this time, but from home, members continue to knit, crochet, and weave items such as scarves, prayer shawls, pocket prayer shawls, baby hats, and lap blankets for people who are going through rough times,” said Dina Slechta, who is part of the VBS leadership team representing Trinity UCC along with Diane Rice. Lindsey Wagner is the team’s liaison with Zion. The two churches have worked together again to create the “Still Knit in God’s Love” curriculum for this year’s VBS.The same theme song and similar concepts will be included, but there will be new Bible stories and different perspectives, which will highlight the results of enduring adversity with God’s help: understanding, compassion, strength, ingenuity, and humility. “We want VBS to be a positive experience and an encouragement to everyone to ‘make lemonade when life hands you lemons,’” Slechta said. “We want people to look for the good that God can bring about in any circumstance.” In a marked difference from last year, VBS will not be held in person. Rather, it will be offered as an online choice board, which some teachers have used for

Cavod Sets Summer Opportunities

Each year the Lancaster County Office of Aging distributes vouchers that can be used at farmers markets to purchase fruits and vegetables grown in Pennsylvania. The vouchers are part of a Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture program that supports local farmers and provides nutrition to people age 60 and over. In order to participate in the program, people need to live in Lancaster County; be age 60 or older by Thursday, Dec. 31; have an annual income at or below $23,606 for one person or $31,894 for two people; and not live in a facility where their food is provided.

This year, there are changes to the program. Each eligible person will receive four vouchers valued at $6 each, instead of $5 as in previous years. The vouchers can only be obtained by completing a short application and mailing it to the Lancaster County Office of Aging. Due to the pandemic, the vouchers will not be distributed in person at either senior centers or the Office of Aging. Once a completed application is received, the vouchers and a list of markets will be mailed to the applicant’s home. The application is available by visiting www.lanco aging.org or by calling the Office of Aging at 717-299-7979.

Clubs are scheduled for the weeks of July 6 to 10, July 13 to 17 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., July 20 to 24, July 27 to 31, Aug. 3 to 7, and Aug. 10 to 14. Registration is limited. 12 - MERCHANDISER - Warwick Edition - July 1, 2020

Gretna Theatre To Host Drive-In Movie Gretna Theatre will offer a drive-in movie on Friday, July 10, with a showing of the filmed live performance of “42nd Street” from London’s West End. The filmed performance depicts the recent revival directed by the musical’s late co-writer Mark Bramble. “42nd Street” first opened at Theatre Royal Drury Lane in 2017, featuring a cast of more than 50 - the largest in West End history. With a score that includes such tunes as “ We’re in the Money,” “Lullaby of Broadway” and “Shuffle Off to Buffalo,” “42nd Street” tells the story of famed theater director Julian Marsh as he tries to mount a musical extravaganza at the height of the Great Depression. Soldiers Field, located off Timber Road in Mount Gretna, will be transformed into a drive-in movie theater with a large movie screen. Attendees will be able to tune their FM radio to the film’s audio. Gates will open at 8 p.m. and the film will begin at dusk. There will be an admission fee per carload, and all tickets must be purchased in advance at www. gretnatheatre.org.

Women’s Club Plans Outreach The Lancaster Christian Women’s Club will host a Zoom outreach titled “The Courage to Change” on Wednesday, July 8, at noon. Participants will enjoy light-hearted comedy, music, and door prizes. Guest speaker Diana Grounds of Barboursville, W.Va., will present “Changes Come Through Family.” Reservations are required. For more details, including how to sign in, readers may contact susankbleil@gmail.com.
