The group meets on the third Saturday of each month at 8 a.m. at the Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant, 2760 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-in-Hand. The club is open to all veterans and their spouses. Simon Ababou, fitness director with the Lititz recCenter, is happy to see participation in the organization’s annual adult triathlon growing. “Last year, we had 172 (participants), and we had 10 teams,” said Ababou, who recalled that in 2017 triathlon organizers focused on encouraging more teams to sign up. This year’s triathlon, for people age 16 and older, will be held on Sunday, Aug. 5, with the race beginning at 8 a.m. at the rec center, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz. According to Ababou, participants will be staged by age group. “Teams can be two or three,” explained Ababou. “We can have one swimmer and (the other) can bike and run or teams can have three (participants).”
Ababou noted that families, co-workers, groups of church members, or workout buddies can all make up teams. For 2018, Ababou would like to see even more teams take part in the event. As in the past, participants will swim 300 meters in the outdoor pool, bike 15.8 miles through the farmland surrounding Lititz, and run 3.1 miles in Lititz. This year’s courses will be the same as before, with the bike portion taking competitors toward Manheim, including the hill on Lexington Road, and then looping back around to the Lititz recCenter. The running course will include Spruce Street and the shaded streets near Moravian Manor and will finish at the Lititz recCenter. Food and beverages will be available for competitors at the conclusion of the triathlon. See 2018 Triathlon pg 7

Michelle Walton, Lancaster County 4-H volunteer, has given her time to as many as four Family Farm Days events, but she was amazed at the number of

There is a saying that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Maryanne O’Neill and Emmie Romberger, who are both staff members with Safe Families for Children, a program of Bethany Christian Services (BCS), believe this expression to be true. Safe Families is a ministry that helps parents experiencing a crisis by providing a Christian host family to care for their children until they can be reunited. “We are the preventative service, which saves funds,” explained Romberger, who added that the central Pennsylvania chapter has a 97 percent return-to-family rate. According to O’Neill, the program is much less costly than utilizing the foster care system. To help raise funds to support the work of Safe Families, BCS will hold a golf tournament on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, See Safe Families pg 2
Baby “Clark” was born while his mother was incarcerated. Bethany Christian Services’ Safe Families for Children program was able to provide Clark with a host home until his mother was released to care for him. The program is one of many that will be supported by the organization’s annual golf tournament on Sept. 26.

years ago. The local chapter opened in Dauphin County in 2011, and the Lancaster branch began serving clients about five years ago. The central Pennsylvania region includes York and Lebanon counties, offering about 55 host families within the chapter. “We have really seen the program grow in terms of volunteers and those utilizing the service, said Romberger. “We will work with any parent who is in crisis. According to Romberger, advantages to families who benefit from the service are many. “The parent gains an additional support network in the host family, and they can handle the crisis without their children being involved, said Romberger. “(This can) ultimately stabilize the family. In addition, parents retain full custody of their children, who stay with screened and trained host families. The organization works closely with all parties involved to provide support until the crisis has passed, an average of 45 days. A number of different types of issues may bring a client to Safe Families. “It’s a different situation every time, said Romberger. “It could be homelessness, hospitalization, or incarceration, but the underlying issue is a lack of a support network. Romberger added that for a single mother, the birth of a second child is often a time when help is needed, and O’Neill added that when a mother is undergoing treatment for an illness, such

as cancer, Safe Families can often help. O’Neill and Romberger described a situation where a client was incarcerated when she gave birth. “The hospital social worker called us, and we started hosting the baby right out of the hospital when he was (only) four days old, said Romberger, explaining that the host mother took the baby to wellness checkups and brought him to see his birth mother whenever visitation was possible. After the birth mother was released, the host mother continued to have a relationship with her, helping to ease the new mother through issues that can be overwhelming, such as sleeping schedules. “It was a good transition, said O’Neill, who noted that the birth mother called the host mother the first time the baby was ill. “When (the birth mother was) reunited (with the baby, the host mother gave her) a picture book of all the things they had done together, O’Neill added. Referrals come from a number of sources, and many clients call Safe Families themselves. “We call people back within 24 hours, noted Romberger. O’Neill noted that the organization is actively seeking to network with area churches for a variety of reasons. “We are looking to engage with new churches, she noted. “That’s where we get our partners from. Readers who would like to learn more about Safe Families may visit www.safe -families.org or call 717-238-3549.

animals for children to visit, including cows, chicks, a rabbit, goats, and alpacas. Caitlin Cullen, a 4-H member and a rising seventhgrader from the Lampeter-Strasburg School District, spent time watching over the chicks and then switched to overseeing the goat petting station. Cullen, who belongs to the Spinning Spurs 4-H Club, said that goats can actually be very shy, but they also try to do what they want. The goat Cullen was struggling with wanted to eat one volunteer’s lunch. Bringing the goat back under the tent, Cullen continued explaining that goats are prized for their milk, cheese, and meat. Toward the back of the Kids’ Tent, Ashlee Dugan, PA Preferred coordinator with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, passed out a variety of educational materials, many of them designed to teach children about farming. “PA Preferred is the statewide branding program for Pennsylvania-grown products,” said Dugan. The Buy Local papers that Dugan handed out included a variety of puzzles, games, and activities that children could complete to learn about mushrooms, healthy meals, and the process of making maple syrup. For adults, Dugan had stocked up on
pamphlets on the Choose PA Dairy campaign that explains how to determine whether milk is locally sourced. “It’s an effort to teach consumers how to find local milk (so they can) really support local dairies,” said Dugan. Another pamphlet offered a seasonal calendar to help shoppers know when different types of produce are in season. “It’s important to eat local and (know) how to determine what’s local,” said Dugan. “Buying local supports your community.” Behind the Kids’ Tent, local dairy royalty manned three stations where children could take part in activities and learn about milk production and the nutritional value of milk. Mikayla Davis, Berks County Alternate Dairy Princess, and Berks County Dairy Ambassador Anthony Hix ran the COW-ABUNGA game, which gave players a chance to choose a question and win a prize. The duo asked questions such as “How much water does a cow drink in a day?” (The answer is 25 to 50 gallons.) Another station included fitness activities such as jumping rope and kicking a soccer ball, with information about how milk can be used to refuel the body. The third station traced the path of milk from the farmer milking the cow to the supermarket shelf.

Well Workplace Awards Presented
Class of 1946 Holds Reunion
Lighten Up Lancaster County, LiveWell Lancaster County, and Central Penn Business Group on Health recently presented the 2018 Well Workplace Awards to local businesses at the Lancaster County Health Summit. The Well Workplace Awards are given at four distinct levels and were awarded to 25 companies in Lancaster County this year. Lancaster-Lebanon IU-13 received the Impact Award for achieving measurable results and meaningful outcomes with their comprehensive workplace wellness program. CoreSource received the Innovation Award for its unique efforts to create a culture of complete wellness that incorporates physical, mental, and social well-being. The companies who received Well Workplace Awards have developed exemplary programs to support health and well-being for their employees. These large and small businesses offer programming such as on-site fitness classes, tobacco cessation programs, health coaching, and health screenings, and they have also made changes to the work environment by offering healthier vending options, walking paths and trails, on-site farm share programs, and policies that promote work-life balance. Platinum Well Workplace Awards were given to Benchmark Construction, Dutchland Inc., Electron Energy Corporation, Herr Foods, LCSWMA, Moravian Manor, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, Turkey Hill Dairy, UPMC Pinnacle, and Wellspan Health. Gold Well Workplace Awards were given to Eastern Lancaster County School District, Engle Printing & Publishing Co. Inc., Ephrata Area School District Wellness Committee, Murray Securus, Nxtbook Media, and Preferred Health Care. Silver Well Workplace Awards were given to Benecon, CoreSource Inc., Donegal Insurance Group, Fulton Financial Corporation, Lancaster Lebanon IU13, and Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster Ltd. Bronze Well Workplace Awards were given to East Lampeter Township, Keystone Custom Homes, and VisionCorps. To receive a Well Workplace Award, companies complete the Worksite Health Scorecard created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The Worksite Health Scorecard is a comprehensive tool that employers can use to evaluate whether they have implemented evidence-based health promotion interventions or strategies in their worksites. Many of the Well Workplace Award winners have used the scorecard for years to set goals for improving their workplace wellness offerings. The Well Workplace Awards were first given in 2010. Applications are available in February of each year, and the Awards are distributed at the Health Summit in May.
