Ferris Wheel Turns Used Clothing Into Compassion

WARWICK EDITION

Back in late 2013, Sherry Gassert’s husband sustained a head injury. During the first few months after that happened, a neighbor named Pharis helped Gassert’s family in myriad ways. “I wanted a way to repay him,” said Gassert, who decided to pay it forward and honor Pharis at the same time. By April of 2014, Gassert had started receiving donations for a nonprofit clothing bank in a Lititz neighborhood that came to be known as Ferris Wheel Clothing Bank. “We were going to focus on kids’ clothes,” said Gassert, who coordinates the bank with her daughter

The Lititz Historical Foundation’s Mary L. Oehme Gardens turn 25 years old this summer and will celebrate the occasion with a garden party on Friday, July 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. The event was rescheduled from June 11. The gardens are located behind 137 E. Main St., Lititz. The gardens were officially completed and ready for unveiling on June 9, 1996, after months of planning and many hours of work by dedicated volunteers from the Lititz Historical Foundation (LHF). With a donation from William B. Oehme, Mary’s husband, and support from the LHF Tour of Gardens and private individuals, there was enough capital to complete the project. The extensive improvements tied the property’s two houses together. During the garden party, there will be self-guided tours of the gardens, light refreshments, and volunteers available to answer questions. Admission is free, but there is a fee to take a tour of the 1792 Johannes Mueller House. The Lititz Museum and gift shop will be open until 9 p.m.

From there, the bank mushroomed into providing household items, pots, pans, bedding, books, toys, personal care items, and, when a quick turnaround, furniture, which Gassert’s husband picks up in his truck. Children’s clothing starts with preemie sizes and ranges to 18 to 20. Junior items are available, as well. For adults, sizes range up to 5X for women and 7X for men. “We have maternity, scrubs, and an athletic section,” said Gassert. Outerwear, bathing suits, and new underwear are also stocked. “(All clothing) is organized and sized,” said Gassert. “If I wouldn’t wear it or one of my grandchildren (wouldn’t wear it), we don’t hang it up,” she noted. Stiffler added that items are checked to be sure they are stain free. “We want people to shop with dignity,” said Gassert. “We don’t want them to have to root through bins.” The approximately 300 people who are served by the bank each month are referred through PA 211, the United Way, the organization’s Facebook page, the clothing bank’s website, personal reference, or social workers at local schools or with Lancaster General Health.

Amphitheater Foundation Plans Concerts BY ANN MEAD ASH

During 2020, the amphitheater at Long’s Park sat empty. For 2021, Dave Wauls, president of the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation, is looking forward to filling the venue with eight different bands. “Everybody is excited, and we anticipate bigger crowds,” said Wauls, who noted that the food trucks will be back for hungry concertgoers. Concerts are planned beginning Sunday, July 11. Performances will start at 7:30 p.m. each Sunday through Aug. 29. Brad Zuke, chair of the Long’s Park Summer Music Series committee, said that each year the group endeavors to bring acts that represent a wide range of musical genres. In 2020, many of the bands that were booked to play just happened to be fronted by women. “It looked like it was going to be the year of the woman,” noted Zuke. “When everything was canceled, agents and bands wrote back and said, ‘Can we just move ahead to next year?’ That was our starting point (in creating this year’s schedule).” Indeed, only The Big Takeover, a reggae band scheduled to perform on Aug. 1, was not on the 2020 roster.

Zuke noted that contracting bands to play the venue can take several years. He listed scheduling factors for both the performer and the amphitheater, along with travel arrangements and current visas for the performers. “Several years ago, we had Old Blind Dogs from Scotland (play a concert),” he said. “It took us six years to finally have them perform here.” This year, the opening concert on July 11 will feature Bakithi Kumalo, a South African bass player who was one of the top session musicians in his country when Paul Simon went there to develop his album “Graceland” in 1985. “Simon invited him to America to finish studio sessions,” said Zuke of the Grammy Award-winning Kumalo, who eventually settled in the U.S. Both Maggie Rose, who will perform on July 18, and Thornetta Davis, who will perform on July 25, are award-winning artists. “Maggie is amazing,” stated Zuke, who noted that Rose makes her home in Nashville. “You don’t typically think of funk, soul, blues, and rock in terms of the Grand Ole Opry,” he noted, adding that Rose has appeared there many times. Davis, a recipient of several Detroit Music Association awards, is known as that city’s Queen of the Blues. See Music pg 6

Library Posts Donation Drive, Program Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, has announced a donation drive and a program. In connection with the library’s Summer Reading Program theme, “Tails and Tales,” the library will hold a donation drive for the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County. The collection will run from Monday to Saturday, July 12 to 17. Anyone who would like to contribute should stop by the library and visit the donation display to choose a tag that names a needed item. Items may be dropped off at the library. The Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, formed in 2011, seeks to meet the needs of animals and their families in Lancaster County. Each year, the organization averages over 400 adoptions; 1,000 feral cat TNR surgeries; more than 70,000 pounds of dry dog and cat food distributed; more than 150 families

served; over $250,000 in veterinary care; and over 50 lifesaving veterinary procedures. For more details, visit https://petpantrylc.org/. The library has also planned Fountain Pens for Beginners, a program that will take place on Thursday, July 15, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. This in-person program will focus on the various fountain pens on the market, how a fountain pen works, how to fill it, how to clean it and more. Each participant will receive a free fountain pen. The program will be led by Kathryn Raynor, a pen-and-paper enthusiast who has been hunting for the most comfortable pen since 2006. She started digging deeper into the realm of fountain pens in 2018 and found the hobby to be complex and fun. Registration is required. private and public beaches throughout the state. Thirty-five of Pennsylvania’s 121 state parks have beaches that are typically open and free to the public for swimming from late May to midSeptember. Many of these beaches have a swim-at-your-own-risk policy. They are generally open from 8 a.m. to sunset, daily, but may have adjusted schedules, so check the website before hitting the road. You’ll find links to all the state park beaches on www.townlively.com/ summer-vibes-at-pa-beaches. See PA Beaches pg 6

Bible Study To Focus On Reformer Exploring, Growing Together forum learning discussions will be held on Thursdays in July at Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 E. Market St., from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in room 103 on the lower level. Topics will be “Pardon Understanding God’s Amazing Grace” on July 8, “Purpose - Discovering God’s Call” on July 15, “Partners - Pursuing God’s Passions Together” on July 22, and “Perseverance Cultivating Spiritual Disciplines for a Lifestyle of Service” on July 29. The discussion will be based on the “Be a World-Changer” Bible study, which explores the life, faith, and vision of 19th-century British reformer William Wilberforce. No preparation prior to the sessions is needed. People may attend one or more sessions. No COVID guidelines will be in place. Attendees may bring a lunch to eat during the discussions. Restrooms and a water fountain will be available, but food should be shared only if pre-packaged. The forum learning series is intended to offer a safe learning environment in which to discuss and explore diverse topics and beliefs. The July series will conclude the group’s regular season, and meetings will resume in September. For more details, contact Linda at 717-626-0745 or raven303@ptd.net.

“The two main things we do for the dogs is socialization and loving them,” said Courtney. “That’s the basic puppy raiser formula.” Included in that formula are commands such as sit, down, forward to start walking, and rest for stay. Housetraining is one of the first tasks, since the puppies are only seven weeks old when they arrive and do not even know their names. Courtney explained that housetraining is important because the dog must learn to utilize different surfaces, since its eventual owner may live in a city with limited access to grass. Socialization involves taking the dog to stores and other public areas, such as parks. Courtney brought Ives, the German shepherd she is currently raising - Seeing Eye also breeds golden retrievers, Labradors, and a golden/Labrador mix to be guide dogs - to Lititz Springs Park for the interview for this article, and she pointed out the

distractions there she uses to train him. “There’s water going under a bridge, ducks quacking, kids screaming, trucks (on Route 501),” she said. “We give them praise (rather than food) as a reward,” she noted. “It establishes the bond so that they are looking to please you and want to work for you.” She added that those who see a dog being trained and wish to interact should ask the trainer. “If it’s a working guide dog in its harness, it’s very important that people don’t approach them and talk to them or pet them,” she said. “They are working, and they need to be focused.” Dogs remain with their puppy raisers for about 15 months before returning to Morristown, where a Seeing Eye trainer works with them for approximately four more months to complete their training. At the end of that time period, the dog will complete a “town walk”

July 7, 2021 - 5

with the trainer. The puppy raisers may walk with a guide about half a block behind during this event. “The dog guides (the trainer) through the streets of Morristown and shows off what he’s learned,” said Courtney, who noted that the successful dog will stop at curbs and for cars, avoid objects, and ignore other dogs. Once the dog graduates, it will be assigned a student who has vision impairment or is blind to work with, eventually becoming that student’s dog. Courtney said that Ives, who is a little over a year old now, already loves to work. “As soon as his leash comes out, he knows he is going to work,” she said. “They love to work, and you can see it.” Readers who would like to know more about the Lancaster County 4-H Seeing Eye puppy club may visit https://extension.psu.edu /programs/4-h/counties/lancaster /clubs/project-clubs.

Additional August concerts will include Southern country singer Paul Thorn on Aug. 8. Vanessa Collier, who will play on Aug. 15, has received blues music awards as an instrumentalist for horn, but Zuke noted that she also plays guitar and sings. He stated that the Kenny Rogers Band, which will appear on Aug. 22, is the real deal. “(These) are the musicians that played with Kenny

as opposed to being a cover band. These guys helped write the music and played the original music,” he said. On Aug. 29, a Live Aid Tribute Show will celebrate one of the world’s biggest concerts by featuring talented local musicians. Readers who would like to know more about the concerts, which will follow current health protocols, may visit www.longspark.org.

and Home Center. The Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club is a registered nonprofit organization that began in 2014. Its mission is to bring together local people who share an interest in geology and paleontology. The club has monthly meetings with presentations, and members go on local and out-of-state field trips. Additionally, the club helps scouts earn their merit loops and badges, and a few qualified members teach geology for free - often on a field trip to the Pequea Silver Mines. Proceeds from club membership and shows allow for building rental, insurance for members, field trip expenses, events for scouts, and more. Serving Up Soup BY CATHY MOLITORIS

While a church picnic has been a tradition at Ruhl’s United Methodist Church for more than 100 years, the pandemic has caused the congregation to rethink its plans. The church had to cancel its picnic both last year and this year, but church members still wanted to serve the community, so they decided to offer their popular chicken corn soup to go. The soup will be available for pickup on Saturday, July 17, at the church’s picnic grove, 2766 Newport Road, Manheim. Soup will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or until sold out. “It’s our traditional recipe we’ve used at our church since we started having picnics,” said Gail Ruhl, a member of the picnic committee.

“People can bring their own containers, but we’ll also have prepackaged containers of soup in quarts.” Ruhl has been involved in making the soup for decades. “I was taught how to make the rivels, and I’ve done that for the last 30 years,” she stated, adding that her husband and daughters help out, as well. The committee cooks and prepares the chicken on the Thursday before the sale, and the sale day is a very early morning for the crew. “We start about 5:30 a.m.,” Ruhl explained., and it’s a good thing they do, because people begin lining up early in the morning to get their soup, she noted. It also takes a village to serve soup to the community. “The soup sale is a church effort,” Ruhl remarked. “Many volunteers get together to help and

make this happen.” The church members hope to bring back the picnic next year, which typically includes a full day of music, games and fellowship, but they felt the soup sale was a way to ease back into community outreach. “We wanted to serve our community in a way that everyone would feel comfortable,” Ruhl said. “Lots of people come

Giant Expands Flashfood App Availability The Giant Company recently announced that it is rolling out the Flashfood app to all Giant and Martin’s stores following a successful pilot. Designed to reduce food waste and help customers save money on fresh food items nearing their bestbefore date, the Flashfood partnership has helped the Giant Company divert more than 250,000 pounds of food waste from landfills. The Flashfood app allows shoppers to purchase fresh food, including produce, meat, deli and bakery products that are nearing their best-before date at significantly reduced prices. First introduced in May at four Giant stores in Lancaster, Flashfood is currently available at more than 30 stores. The rollout will place Flashfood at 170 participating Giant and Martin’s stores by fall. The chainwide rollout of Flashfood begins with stores in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, with additional stores joining each month. By downloading the Flashfood app, which is free on iOS and Android, shoppers can browse deals on fresh items that are nearing their best-before dates. Purchases are then made directly through the app and shoppers pick up their order the same day from the Flashfood zone located inside the participating Giant or Martin’s store. In addition to the Flashfood app, Giant also has recycling and donation programs in place. Last year alone, through Giant’s Meat the Needs program and in partnership with Feeding America, more than five million pounds of safe, consumable fresh food that would have otherwise gone unsold was frozen and donated to regional food bank partners. Visit www.giantfoodstores .com or www.martinsfoods.com for more information.
