In 2018, TTC/Potter’s House held its annual pig roast at 261 School Lane, Brownstown, located along the Conestoga River. The purpose in choosing that location was to dedicate the property with plans to build a faith-based rehab facility to combat drug addiction, called Still Waters Recovery Center, on the site. This year, the organization, a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions, will hold the event at West Earl Community Park, 189 S. State St., Leola, because permits have been granted and construction has begun at the Still Waters site. The pig roast benefit will be held on Saturday, July 27, from

noon to 4 p.m. Vans will be available to take attendees for tours at the Still Waters site a short distance away. For the more adventurous, kayaks and canoes will be available to paddle upriver to the site. The schedule for the drop-in experience will include a special 2 p.m. program with live worship music, testimonies, and a speaker. Lloyd Hoover, executive director of TTC/ Potter’s House, plans to discuss hope in the face of addiction issues. “The basic essence (is) us needing to recognize the seriousness of the impact of (addiction) on our communities,” said Hoover, “ … and to recognize that there is a way to respond. We are not hopeless or helpless.” At 3 p.m., baptisms will occur in the river that runs through the park. Hoover explained, “It’s a culmination time of us recognizing that in order to

According to Samuel Mwangi, a licensed addictions counselor, all addictions are centered in the brain of an individual. “It’s about stimulation of the brain, and it’s a matter of learning

different skills for each person depending on their situation,” said Mwangi. “Drugs (of choice) come into play from a physiological perspective, but we (at CCARS) deal with addiction as a whole.” Mwangi is the lead counselor at CCARS (Community Care and Addiction Recovery Services), one of the few licensed establishments offering addiction counseling in the northern and eastern parts of Lancaster County. CCARS opened in Conestoga Church of the Brethren (COB), 141 E. Main St., Leola, in early April. A dedication service on April 9, was attended by members of the Conestoga Valley Ministerium, Conestoga COB, and Carpenter Community Church, where Mwangi is a pastor. See CCARS Office pg 5

Around The World from pg 1 A highlight for children - as well as adult visitors - over the years has been the alpacas brought by Eastland Alpacas. The fiber animals will return to Global Fair again. Joining the alpacas will be “residents” from the Nature Center at Black Rock Retreat in Quarryville, which may include snakes, turtles, lizards, a rabbit, and a bird. Children will have the opportunity to earn free ice cream through a scavenger hunt while they are also learning about the world. Another change to Global Fair is a different layout. Rather than organizing the fair into geographic regions as in the past, there will be four new areas: The lively Global Village will feature workers from around the world and various community organizations. The Adventure Zone will have the petting zoo and children’s activities. The World Stage will offer entertainment throughout the day. The International Food Court will sell food from more than a dozen places. “The food is a favorite part of the fair for many people,” Derksen commented. “To be able to enjoy amazing food from East and West Africa, Nepal, Latin America, or Europe in the same location is quite unique. From injera to pinchos and from stroopies to hot dogs, you’ll find it at Global Fair.”

EMM president Gerry Keener pointed out that one of the purposes of Global Fair is to promote understanding of other cultures and people. “The more exposure and knowledge we have of others who may be different from us, the more our worldview expands,” Keener remarked. “This is especially important for children. I believe when there’s more opportunity for appreciation and awareness, it can result in increased kindness and love for one another.” Parking will be free of charge, and admission will be by donation. Proceeds will be used to fund the fair in future years. Folks who attend Global Fair will also receive a bit of a bonus. “It’s a bit of a well-kept secret that visitors to Global Fair may also enjoy the 1719 Hans Herr House

The Art Gallery at United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC), 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, is featuring work by Lancaster County fraktur artist Emily Smucker-Beidler. The display was slated to start on July 9 and will be open to the public daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the month of July. Fraktur, created with ink and watercolor, is the decorative manuscript found in Pennsylvania German, showcasing calligraphic texts and related designs, figures, and symbols. It is a classic American folk art dating back to the mid-1700s. There are several forms of fraktur: Vorschriften (writing samples), Taufscheine (birth and baptismal certificates), marriage and house blessings, book plates, and floral and figurative scenes. Initially, they were all hand-drawn, but printed text eventually became more common. Smucker-Beidler has been creating fraktur artwork for many years, driven by the interaction between old and new images. Recently, curious as to how her creation with 21st-century materials differed from those from the 1700s, she started to experiment with the paper she uses. In the 1800s, artists would have used ledger

and Museum and the grounds, including the Native American longhouse, without the customary admission fee,” Derksen said. For more information about Global Fair, readers may visit www.emm.org/globalfair. EMM is headquartered at 53 W. Brandt Blvd., Salunga. Its mission is to cross cultures, engage the world, and make disciples of Jesus Christ. To learn more, folks may call 717-8982251 or visit www.emm.org. The roughness in the paper was due to being pressed with closely packed wires instead of flat plates, which left small indentations in the paper. She believes this has given her a new perspective on her fraktur work. Smucker-Beidler’s work titled “Be Still, My Soul” shows the common motifs of birds and tulips drawn over a sheet of music. The colors and drawing style look similar to 18th-century fraktur. Many other types of fraktur will be on display. A limited budget or scant vacation time does not have to mean a dismal summer. In fact, local folks may virtually go around the world in just four hours at the 24th annual Global Fair set for Saturday, July 13, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. Hosted by Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM), Global Fair is an international missions and culture event, but it has been updated for 2019. It will still include information about other cultures, opportunities to talk to mission workers and hear their stories about God at work around the world, international food from a wide variety of countries, and activities for children. But there will also be new events and exhibits that are intended to be family-friendly, fun, and interactive. “One new feature is a world stage that will feature a range of entertainment,” said Kaylene Derksen, development director and member of the events committee. “The always-popular Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster will sing international musical selections, and the Harrisburg STEP group will give a lively performance. There will be Korean music, drumming, and dancing as well as several other international acts.”

The plan calls for two buildings that can each house eight clients as well as a director’s home and a pavilion. Phase one of the building plan includes the first group home and the director’s house. Phase two includes the second group home and the pavilion. The organization hopes to have the first group home completed and functioning by January 2020. Hoover noted that at TTC/Potter’s House treatment does not focus solely on an individual’s addiction. “We keep … indicating that we don’t just see the addiction as the problem,” explained Hoover. “There are factors that contribute to why some people resort to chemicals. Our purpose is to help individuals find freedom from the factors that led them into addictive behavior.” Rob Weatherholtz, associate director for TTC/Potter’s House,

Hoover agreed. “It’s an expression of God’s heart for the community to pull together,” he said. “This is our problem, so we will have to pull together to become part of the answer.” Attendance at the pig roast is by suggested donation. CCARS Office from pg 1 Mwangi is a graduate of Lancaster Bible College and a boardcertified addictions counselor with 13 years of experience in the field. At CCARS, Mwangi endeavors to provide professional services in an atmosphere of Christian love and compassion. He is certified by the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC), an international board that promotes uniform professional standards and quality assurance for alcohol and drug treatment professionals. Appointments may be made at CCARS on Mondays through Fridays between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Mwangi, who is licensed to treat all types of addiction in men and women ages 15 to 65, described two types of treatment that will be offered by CCARS. The first type is outpatient treatment, which usually involves a one-hour individual session and a two-hour group session each week, in accordance with client needs. The second type is called intensive outpatient treatment. Mwangi said that intensive treatment includes multiple group sessions in addition to an individual weekly session.

By the middle of April, CCARS had done 11 assessments and was treating 10 patients. Mwangi hopes to have his wife, Gladys, who is also a licensed counselor, join him with a client caseload in the future. To ensure best practices, CCARS is supervised by Dr. David Byler. According to Conestoga COB pastor Jere Cassel, housing the CCARS office in the church is a ministry opportunity he had been on the lookout for since arriving at the church in 2013. “In 2017, we had our first addiction workshop at the church, and that went really well,” said Cassel, referring to a two-part workshop titled “Heroin Epidemic It’s in Your Community. It’s in Your Congregation.” “The congregation seemed to really appreciate their facility being used (in that way),” Cassel noted. More forums were held with different speakers, including Mwangi. “In the process, Samuel said, ‘Wouldn’t it be good to have a licensed addiction counselor in this area?’” recalled Cassel, who added that the church had space available in a

handicapped-accessible facility. In September 2018, about 18 months after Mwangi first asked the question, the church body gave its final approval for the office to open. Cassel noted that CCARS plans to offer counseling and support groups for families and for issues related to addiction as well. “Addiction is just the primary diagnosis,” explained Mwangi. “Once people enter treatment, they may have marriage or other issues, and we can address the family needs and parenting issues as well.” Mwangi noted that anger management treatment will also be available. “A long line of emotional issues are tied to addiction,” he said. Cassel is encouraged to see the area churches coming together to fight the problem of addiction. “This shows the community that Christian churches can work together and function well,” he said, adding that the Conestoga Valley Ministerium has been supportive of the effort to establish CCARS. Readers who are interested in learning more about CCARS may call 717-296-8181.

UZRC from pg 1 United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC) dedicated its expanded Healthcare Center and 10 new apartments on June 7. The expanded Healthcare Center now is set up in the neighborhood model, where several rooms are situated around a common living and dining space. The renovation added four dining rooms, several sitting areas and a wraparound sunporch. All rooms were converted to private rooms. The Healthcare Center dĂŠcor incorporates soft fabrics, plank floors and fireplaces. Prior to the ceremony, guests were offered tours of the remodeled Healthcare Center. The ceremony started with vocal music from the United Zion Quartet, which consists of Mary and Glenn Snyder and Jim and Rosene Garman. The performance was followed by remarks from CEO Sue Verdegem. Verdegem noted that the new dining rooms allow for smaller numbers of residents in each dining room to create a family atmosphere. She also said several new common living and activity spaces will allow for smaller group activities. She

thanked residents and employees for their support during the construction as well as the architects, engineers, construction workers and financiers. Chaplain Ethan Levengood recalled the 115-year history of UZRC and its founders’ start in giving a home to those without one. He then gave a prayer, which included Psalm 127:1. Guests gathered afterward for light refreshments. UZRC is a Life Plan Community offering independent residential living cottages and apartments, personal care services, and nursing care for long-term care and short-term rehabilitation. It is located at 722 Furnace Hills Pike, just north of downtown Lititz. For more information, readers may visit www.uzrc.org or contact Megan Weiss at mweiss@uzrc.org. Cavod Campers from pg 1 Huyard chose the Disney Channel favorite for a number of reasons. Among them, he likes how the musical delves beyond the surface of high school life. “It pokes fun at all the high school stereotypes,” said Huyard, referencing jocks, geeks, and those who have enthusiasm for music and theater. “As you go deeper, there’s more than that. There are (students) who feel they have to fit into this one group, but this show explores how you can be a combination of things,” he explained. “I related to that in high school.” For those unfamiliar with the show, Huyard described it as “Hairspray,” “Grease,” and “Footloose” smashed together. “It’s a sanitized Disney version of that,” he said. Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at https://cavod.org or by calling 717-354-3355. Tickets may also be available at the door.

The concert will also feature John Philip Sousa’s march “El Capitan,” Alexandre Luigini’s “Ballet Egyptian,” “People Will Say We’re in Love” from the musical “Oklahoma,” the march “On the Mall,” the “No. 9 Polka

in the school musical, and, despite a few mishaps, both are offered callbacks for the lead characters. At this point, Sharpay Evans, who will be played by Annika Locke, and her twin brother, Ryan Evans, played by Ethan Sommers, decide to interfere with the auditions and eliminate competition for the leading roles they aspire to fill. The show boasts 10 songs, many which are high in energy. Showstopping numbers include “Stick to the Status Quo” and “Breaking Free,” which will feature the two leads joined by the entire company, along with “We’re All in This Together.” Although campers are familiar with the music, Huyard noted that some of the songs are not easy. “The boys have to sing very high and the girls low,” said Huyard. “For developing voices, that can be challenging.” Hannah Stone will serve as music director for the show, and Cavod instructor Julie Haney will choreograph the dance numbers.

The camp will culminate with the show being presented in the Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, and at the same times on Sunday, July 28. The plot of “High School Musical” focuses on two teenagers Troy Bolton, played by Noah Durling, and Gabriella Montez, played by Emily Andersen - who have never tried out to be in a show before. Gabriella is a shy, geeky math whiz, and Troy is a basketball star. “The (campers, who are ages 10 to 18) have grown up watching (‘High School Musical’) and listening to the music,” shared Huyard. “The characters are relatable.” The story opens when Troy and Gabriella meet at a ski lodge on New Year’s Eve. They sing karaoke together and exchange phone numbers. When the students return to school, Troy notices Gabriella in his homeroom and learns that she has transferred to East High School. “Meditations On Loss” Program Slated At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, the community is invited to gather at Mulberry Art Studios to experience an evening of music and poetry. Organizers hope that the event, titled “Meditations on Loss,” may offer the opportunity for a little healing for those who are grieving. The program will be a meditation on the tragedy of life, loss, and time, transformed by music, nature, and poetry. Justin Hopkins will read two poems: Elizabeth Bishop’s “One Art,” a villanelle about the art of losing, and Donald Hall’s “Without,” a poem without punctuation on the loss of his wife. Christopher Brooks, violin, and Patrick White, bass, will interweave music among these poems, performing solo violin, solo electric bass, and violin and bass together, culminating with Bach’s “Sarabande” in D minor and Elliott Carter’s “Mnemosyne” for solo violin, which he wrote in memory of his late wife. The inspiration for this event grew from White, who tells stories of many people whom he loved who have recently died. Tickets for “Meditations on Loss” are available for a set fee per

The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster held its 15th annual Celebration of Achievement on June 2 in the Johnston Auditorium of the Lancaster Masonic Center. A total of 13 children graduated from the program. Heather Hinkel, director of the center, addressed the students and praised their work ethics. Faith Irwin and Sara Stinchcomb, who had previously graduated from the program, also addressed the students and shared their experiences of overcoming dyslexia as they graduated high school and began the next leg of their journey into college. Each graduate was given an keepsake autograph bear, as the bear is the Children’s Dyslexia Centers Inc.’s mascot. Students thanked their tutors and the board of governors for the service they received. The center, sponsored by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection of the Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite Masons, is one of eight centers in Pennsylvania providing tutoring at no charge to children from elementary school through high school who fit a dyslexic profile. Children are eligible regardless of economic status or Masonic affiliation. The Orton-Gillingham approach is used as the basis for tutoring and tutor training. This method is a sequential, multisensory, phonetic approach to

language. The Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster opened in 2002 and has served more than 200 children. Last year the center enrolled more than 30 children, the capacity for the center, which operates on a small budget and is funded in large measure from the local fundraising efforts undertaken by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection and the board of governors that oversees the program. The cost to tutor a child each year averages about $6,000, and the center has a waitlist of about 20 children. The center also offers free training for adults to receive a Certified Dyslexia Practitioner 1 certificate. Fundraising efforts currently include the annual Lancaster W. Scott Stoner Memorial Children’s Dyslexia Center Walk in October, the Extraordinary Give in November, and car wash coupons to Mr. Car Wash in December. The center hopes to expand its fundraising efforts in order to accommodate the increasing number of children who have a need. Dates for fundraisers are available at http://childrensdyslexiacentero flancaster.org or by searching for “Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster” on Facebook. Readers may call 717-481-5680 or email cdclancasterpa@gmail.com for information about the center.
