Veterans Honor Park is small memorial that packs big tribute

Witha healthy dose of empathy, we can turn indebtedness into appreciation.

Located at 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz, across the parking lot from the entrance to the Lititz Public Library, Veterans Honor Park of Lancaster County recognizes all the servicemen and women from Lancaster County whose dedication and commitment helped provide all the freedom-related privileges we enjoy every day.

Officer Tyler Weinoldt walks the Lititz beat

Police officers are charged with the difficult task of enforcing the law and keeping the peace. In the local community, one of the people carrying out this mission is Tyler Weinoldt. Weinoldt has been a police officer in Lititz borough since 2016. Over the last seven years, Weinoldt has learned a lot about the job, the local residents he serves and himself.

“I am lucky to work in a community that supports its police department,” said Weinoldt. “There may be other areas where the police aren’t perceived in the same way. It helps do the job.”

“It’s a way to honor those who served,” said Barbara Kreider, assistant secretary for Warwick Township, which maintains the park. “You’re teaching people about their freedoms. These are people who answered the call. Everything you do is based on the price these people paid under lessthan-ideal circumstances.”

Architecturally unique, Veterans Honor Park of Lancaster County is a somber place, an unassuming space. An Abraham Lincoln quote“Honor to the Soldier, and Sailor everywhere, who bravely bears his country’s cause” - greets visitors to

a park that recognizes contributions made by local personnel from every branch of the United States military - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard - past, present and future.

“ We’d like more people to know

about it,” said Warwick Township manager Brian Harris. “We do our best to promote it, and anybody who visits the library can see it. But I’m sure there are those who don’t know this area exists.”

“It’s just a simple place where you can go and reflect,” said Kreider. “At times, we’ll have families of people who have served come to us and say, ‘Hey, can you fly this flag?’ It means a lot to them.”

Perhaps the highlight of Veterans Honor Park is the 412 individualized legacy bricks that have been laid to commemorate the service of Lancaster County veterans. The money raised from the sale of the bricks was initially used to fund the memorial, while future sales will go toward continued maintenance of the park.

“Everyone makes mistakes, but there are extensive background checks done on people who want to become police officers,” Weinoldt added. “You have to be a morally sound person to be a police officer, as well as honest and trustworthy. But police officers are always held to a higher standard.”

Weinoldt is one of the 13

members of Lititz’s police force. Because the local police force provides the borough with 24/7 coverage, Weinoldt works seven 12-hour shifts - either 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. or 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. - every two weeks.

Taking a swing against poverty

More than 25 years ago, HOPE International, a Christ-centered global nonprofit that equips men and women to break the cycle of poverty for themselves and their community, gave out its first micro loan in Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine. Just recently, Jeff Rutt, founder of HOPE International, recounted the story of a Ukrainian blueberry farmer named Anastasiya. “Anastasiya decided not to let the war cause her to leave, which is a big deal,” said Rutt. “She had gotten a loan from HOPE prewar for seedlings for her blueberry farm,

and in 2022, she was able to secure a second loan for irrigation to increase her crop.” Last year, Anastasiya and her family harvested their first blueberry crop. HOPE has given out a total of $1.2 million in Ukraine since the war began. HOPE recently surpassed $1.6 billion in micro loans with the goal of restoring dignity in families’ lives. To raise funds to reach such goals, HOPE holds a yearly golf tournament. This year’s fundraiser will take place in three locations: Turf Valley Resort, Ellicott City, Md., at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14; Iron Valley Golf Club, Lebanon, on Friday, Sept. 15, at 7 a.m. and 1 p.m.; and

Rutt emphasized that HOPE focuses on all domains, not just the material but also personal, social, and spiritual. “It’s exciting to see what God can do through what He puts in the hands of the clients we serve around the world,” he said, adding that as the war in Ukraine continues to rage, HOPE continues to offer loans in that country and pray with clients. “God is working,” said Rutt. “We see more and more people coming to Christ through interaction with our teams and the churches even through the destruction and disillu-

sionment of the war,” he said, adding that many people who had no interest in spiritual discussions prior to the war want to pray with the HOPE team. “I believe it will have an impact on the generations to come,” he said. Rutt pointed out that before the war, 5.5% of Ukrainians lived below the poverty line. That number is now at 24%, and it is estimated that it could take a decade for the Ukrainian economy to recover.

Sarah Smith, content and media writer for HOPE International, said that the HOPE approach offers a sustainable way to alleviate poverty and positively impact a community. “When someone takes out a loan or is saving money and starts a business, they start employing other people in the community,” she noted.

Rutt added that sustainability is the reason HOPE has always avoided simply giving handouts to those in need. “We believe we can get to a longer-lasting solution through allowing people to use the gifts that God put in our hands. We are interested in restoring dignity, not cre-

Tickets available for Lititz Chocolate Walk

The Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area will hold its 22nd annual Lititz Chocolate Walk on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This event is hosted each year by the Kiwanis Club and Wilbur Chocolate on the Saturday before Columbus Day. All money raised supports children’s charities, such as the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic and Lititz and Manheim Township libraries. All the chefs and chocolatiers donate their time and treats, and merchants provide locations for the chocolatiers to distribute food.

The event has sold out in recent years, so early ticket

purchase is recommended. Tickets went on sale on July 1, and more than 500 tickets were sold within the first 24 hours. To purchase tickets, visit www.lititzchocolatewalk.com or stop by Wilbur Chocolate, 45 N. Broad St., Lititz; Aaron’s Books, 35 E. Main St., Lititz; Zum Anker Alley Shoppes, 22 E. Main St. (rear), Lititz; Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road, Lititz; or Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. Over the course of the event’s existence, the Kiwanis Club - which has fewer than 25 active members - has raised more than $1 million for local children’s charities, with more than $100,000

ating dependency.” To continue to make that happen, Rutt has set a goal of raising $1.5 million toward HOPE’s total budget of $36 million through the golf tournament. “It all happens through partnerships and sponsorships,” he said. “Contact us and help drive out poverty.”

Church posts vacation Bible school

St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, 222 N. Broad St., Lititz, will hold its annual vacation Bible school (VBS) from Sunday, July 23, through Thursday, July 27, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. VBS is open for children age 4 through students entering sixth grade in the fall. The theme of the VBS this year is “Food Truck Party - On a Roll With God.”

There will be crafts, games, a Bible story, music and snacks each night. As the theme of the VBS is foodrelated, each participant will be asked to bring a nonperishable food item such as peanut butter, macaroni or a canned

good every night of VBS. All of the collected items will be donated to a local food bank.

On July 27, St. Luke’s will host an outdoor picnic at 5 p.m., weather permitting. In the case of inclement weather, the picnic will be moved indoors. St. Luke’s will serve hot dogs; all attendees are asked to bring a side dish. A food truck will be on hand serving ice cream.

The young people will perform a brief program after the picnic to show their families and friends what they learned at VBS. A freewill offering will be received for a local charity.

For more details or to register a young person for VBS, call the church office at 717-6267100. Children may also be registered on July 23 at 6 p.m.

Petersheim named to All-ODAC Second Team

Bridgewater College women’s lacrosse player Kaitlyn Petersheim, a native of Lititz, was announced as an All-ODAC honoree.

Petersheim earned a spot on the second team after getting a third-team nod last season. She was second on the team with 36 goals, 15 assists and 51 points. She also scooped up 17 ground balls and caused eight turnovers. The junior midfielder registered multi-goal performances in 12 games, scoring at least three goals in six of them. She also pitched

in assists in nine games, including four assists to pair with two goals in a 19-7 win against Ferrum. Petersheim was also second on the team with 41 draw controls.

The Eagles finished the season at 10-9 to record the team’s first winning season since 2018. The program got the No. 6 seed in the ODAC Tournament and hosted a first-round game, which was the first home postseason contest for the team since 1997. The team prevailed 14-12 over Averett to claim its first postseason home win since 1992.

Veterans Park

“We want people to know the park exists and that it’s a countywide attraction,” said Harris. “It’s a place where anyone from Lancaster County can come to honor someone in their family who served.”

Veterans Honor Park of Lancaster County was built on 0.2 acres of Warwick Township land in 2019. Many local communities maintain their own military memorials, but Veterans Honor Park is one of the few that recognizes the service of

thousands of citizens from across the county.

“It was (Warwick Township board of supervisors member) Dave Kramer’s idea,” said Kreider. “The county had this idea, ‘We should have a Lancaster County veterans park.’ And Dave said, ‘Why not here?’

It’s a credit to Mr. Kramer because he helped move it forward.”

For additional information on Veterans Honor Park of Lancaster County, go to www.vetshonorparklanco.org.

“It definitely takes a certain type of individual,” said Weinoldt. “It’s a commitment. You work holidays, and it takes time away from family. You never know what the next type of call is going to be. There are difficult aspects to it, and there are rewarding aspects to it.”

“It’s something different every day,” continued Weinoldt. “You get to be in the community, and you get to be outside. I’m not the kind of person who can sit behind a desk. You can help the community and hopefully have a positive impact.”

The Lititz Borough Police Department is dispatched to about 7,500 incidents each year, ranging from domestic calls and vehicle accidents to reports of fraud, from suspicious activities to reports of people driving under the influence. Weinoldt said that the winter months are typically slower than the summer months.

“One of the best things about the job is that you get to have a positive influence on your community,” said Weinoldt. “You’re helping people in their time of need. You also work in a team environment, and you become close with the people you work

Stay in the know!

with. I’d say one of the most challenging aspects of it is dealing with some people who just don’t want to cooperate.”

A graduate of Hempfield High School, the 28-year-old Weinoldt attended HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College and graduated from HACC’s police academy. Weinoldt was hired by Lititz right out of the police academy.

“I can’t pinpoint an exact time, but I knew for a while, probably since high school, that I wanted to be a police officer,” said Weinoldt. “I feel like I’ve definitely grown some. Once you start experiencing things, you understand the reality of things. You never stop learning. There’s always something new to learn. You’ve got to stay on top of things, but you evolve into the things you enjoy doing.”

“Hopefully, down the road, I’d like to evolve into a leadership position,” concluded Weinoldt. “I’d like to take on more responsibility and pass on what I’ve learned to the new guys.”

Using a river for recovery

There’s something therapeutic about paddling in a kayak out on the water, said Bill Butler, chapter secretary for Susquehanna Valley Team River Runner (TRR). The sport helps participants hone motor skills, requires focus and instills discipline. It also might save lives.

AUCTION

Founded in 2004, TRR has a mission to provide health and healing for injured military personnel, people on active duty, veterans and disabled members of the community. “Team River Runner literally started in an elevator in Walter Reed Medical Center,” said Butler, a Manheim resident who helped start the Susquehanna Valley chapter in 2015. “Our executive director, Joe Mornini, was visiting a friend of his who had been wounded in combat.” Mornini, a special education teacher, had used kayaks to help children to improve motor coordination and tackle emotional issues, and he invited the veteran he was visiting to

try it out. The organization quickly grew to almost 70 chapters across the country. Butler emphasized that while the program revolves around kayaks and other forms of adventure paddling, its mission is much broader.

“The kayak is just the tool we’re using,” he said. “The whole point of this program is to get our veterans who are having difficulty adjusting to life after serving out into the community with people who are like-minded and enjoy the sport.”

An Operation Desert Storm combat veteran, Butler knows firsthand what it’s like to return to civilian life after service. He returned from war with 80% disability and has difficulty walking or climbing steps. “You put me in a kayak, and I’m completely transf ormed,” he stated, noting that he’s seen the same transformation in the participants of TRR, many of whom become instructors themselves after going through the program.

the organization relies on community support as well as grants for funding. “It can cost $800 to $1,000 apiece for each kayak,” Butler said, noting that the chapter currently has 23 kayaks. Additional equipment needed includes life jackets and paddles for each participant. Butler said that nationally, TRR hosts close to 3,000 paddle sessions annually, and the Susquehanna Valley chapter has served more than 150 paddlers to date.

The Welcome Home PA site includes information on employment opportunities with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and in the private sector, information on furthering military careers with the Pennsylvania National Guard, guidance on how to use GI Bill benefits to attend postsecondary schooling or begin in an apprenticeship, and more. The DMVA also encourages returning service members to visit www.dmva.pa.gov and search for the PA Veterans Registry and PA VETConnect, which helps to connect veterans and their families with programs and services available to them after their service. Veterans can also access the PA Veterans Guide - an extensive resource offering information on veterans’ benefits, housing, information for veterans with disabilities, and more - at www.pa.gov/guides /veterans/.

Earlier this year, a military occupational crosswalk was launched to assist veterans and service members in translating their work experience into civilian jobs.

Noting that 22 veterans a day die by suicide, Butler said TRR is working to address that concern. “We’re hoping to reduce that number by getting veterans re-engaged with the community,” he remarked. “Using a sport like kayaking helps them do that in a disciplined way, providing structure and way for a veteran to dip their toe in the water of getting back into the community.”

TRR is also open to members of the community who have disabilities, and several of the Susquehanna Valley chapter’s biggest events revolve around people who are vision impaired. Kids are OuttaSight (KAOS) provides paddle sport opportunities to children, with TRR veterans serving as leaders. TRR partners with VisionCorps in Lancaster to offer the program.

All of the programs TRR offers are free of charge, and

He hopes more veterans will join the program, and he invites people to volunteer, noting, “If a kayaker wants to help, I’d love for them to become part of this and watch all the amazing things that happen out on the water.”

For more information on TRR, email Butler at Bill. But ler@TeamRiverRunner.org or Jennifer Eaton, chapter coordinator, at jennifer.eaton@ teamriverrunner.org or visit https://svtrr.org.

Flax 101 class posted

Landis Valley Village & Farm Museum will host a new, hands-on class titled Flax 101 on Saturday, July 22, from 9 a.m. to noon. Landis Valley Museum has grown and processed flax for many years, as flax fiber was used to create linen, an important textile to Pennsylvania Germans.

With guidance from Landis V alley historic farming expert Joe Schott, attendees will “pull,” or harvest, flax in the field; learn about the retting process; and then process retted flax to fiber. Attendees should dress to be

outside, wear comfortable shoes and bring water. This workshop requires some physical exertion. Participants should meet at the Visitor’s Center.

The event will be held if there is light rain, but it will be rescheduled for Saturday, July 29, if thunderstorms or heavy rain is predicted.

Space is limited, and all sales are final. There is a fee, with a discount for Landis Valley Associates members. Proceeds will benefit the museum.

To register, visit https:// tinyurl.com/flax101.

Artists sought to create mosaic

The City of Lancaster is seeking a qualified artist or artist team for the commission of a sidewalk mosaic in a hardscaped courtyard to be located on the southeast side of the Plum Street roundabout.

The City of Lancaster Department of Public Works plans to install a permanent roundabout at the intersection of North Plum and East New streets and Park Avenue. A temporary roundabout is currently installed in its place. Construction will begin Wednesday, Aug. 30, and will be completed by June 2024.

The roundabout will be accompanied by a variety of amenities, including vegetated curbing, street trees and other foliage, a hardscaped courtyard, street furniture, and public art in the form of a sidewalk mosaic. The city is seeking an artist to complete the 40-square-foot mosaic to be installed in the concrete of the courtyard.

The city is committed to creating opportunities for local artists, be it through commissioned works or by facilitating learning opportunities for skill development. Artists are preferred to reside in or near Lancaster city, although non-local artists are also welcome to apply, particularly those who have experience working with emerging artists. Non-local artists will be asked to provide hands-on experience to one local artist throughout the artistic process.

Selection will take place using a two-phase process. A selection committee will first review applications submitted through the request for qualification. Up to three finalists will be selected by the committee. Finalists will then be invited to complete phase two of the selection process, which will include the final design proposal. Final design proposals will be reviewed by the Public Art Advisory Board.

The deadline to submit proposals is Monday, July 17. For more details, go to www.cityoflancasterpa.gov.
