Going Green With The Lititz RecCenter By Ann Mead Ash

As Lancaster County went from the yellow phase to the green phase of the COVID-19 restrictions on June 26, Simon Ababou, fitness director with the Lititz recCenter, was concerned about area residents who had been through several months of cabin fever and related stresses. “People lived in their homes for (the quarantine period) without (exercise) and with stress,” said Ababou, who noted that families with children were also trying to finish the school year. “Some parents (were working at home) and became overstressed,” he said,

noting that people were also worried about losing their jobs, and about contracting the virus and being ill or dying. At the same time, the usual support systems may not have been in place. “People are cautious about talking with each other or getting close,” said Ababou. As the county entered the green phase, Ababou saw evidence that area residents are being more physically active. “We have (seen) some changes in our lifestyle,” said Ababou, who has noticed community members outside walking and biking. He noted that a healthy body may have better defenses against disease. “When the cholesterol

“Prior to COVID-19, we couldn’t keep up with the demand for our services,” commented Karen Gerth, founder and executive adviser of Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS). “Many of our volunteers seem to find a population or type of visit that they enjoy and that is a good fit for their pets so they may focus in that area.” Gerth reported that KPETS currently has 443 registered human volunteers and 476 registered animals, as some of the volunteers have multiple pets that work with them. The teams provide more than 10,000 hours of visitation every year in communities throughout southcentral Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. See KPETS pg 2

Treating The Troops LAMS Auction To Be Held Online By Ann Mead Ash

While the celebration of Independence Day on July 4 may have made Americans think back to the moment in Philadelphia in 1776 when the Founding Fathers declared citizens of the 13 colonies free from English rule, owners of several Lancaster County bed-and-breakfasts were thinking of those serving overseas. At least four local innkeepers joined in an Independence Day initiative that sent cookies, socks, banana bread, and toothpaste to members of the U.S. military deployed overseas in an effort dubbed “Inn Support of Our Troops.” Rebecca Gallagher of the Historic Smithton Inn, See Troops pg 3

In the past, Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) annual benefit auctions were held at the school, 1050 E. Newport Road, Lititz, on a Friday evening and during the day Saturday at the end of May or early June. This year, however, the auction will be held online. Bids may be placed from Monday, July 20, through Saturday, July 25. “The (auction) is going to look a bit different this year,” wrote organizer Karen Burkholder in a press release. “ With COVID-19 (restrictions) shutting down schools, we had to rethink how we would hold our annual (fundraiser).” She added that the decision was made in March when the committee, knowing the May date for the live auction was approaching, realized that restrictions would prevent the event from See LAMS Auction pg 2

A variety of items will go up for bids when Lititz Area Mennonite School holds its annual benefit auction online from July 20 through 25. COVID-19 restrictions prevented the annual event from being held in person at the school as it has in the past.

Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS) sent collages and cards to clients, students, and staff members of local health care institutions to provide encouragement during the shutdown. day in the life of a therapy dog under quarantine for a life skills class. The students were curious to see how therapy dogs were being affected by the situation, Gerth said. Teams also made a special video for the Class of 2020 at Warwick High School. “We had a very special bond with this class two years ago when they lost three students within a few weeks, Gerth said. “We wanted to wish them well, congratulate them, and let them know how proud we are of them and how honored we were to be a part of their lives during that most sad time. With Pennsylvania beginning to reopen, KPETS is also considering how to begin to make visits again. Gerth asserted that guidelines will be in place to ensure the safety of the clients, volunteers, and pets. Any facility or organization that would like to host a KPETS team visit for the benefit of its staff members, clients, or students may submit a

request at www.kpets.org. For insurance purposes and the safety and protection of all involved, visits cannot be in a private setting unless a third-party professional is present. KPETS welcomes additional volunteers, as the demand for its services is great. Interested individuals may apply on the aforementioned website. Also, individuals and organizations may partner with KPETS to ensure its continued operation. “KPETS does rely totally on community funding to provide our services free of charge, Gerth explained. “Many of those we serve are nonprofits as well, making donations from businesses and private donors essential for KPETS’ sustainability. Gerth noted that KPETS is not authorized to help anyone obtain emotional support animals. For more information about KPETS, readers may visit www.kpets.org or call 888-68KPETS (888-685-7387).

“More and more facilities, agencies, and organizations are becoming aware of the benefits of the human/animal interaction, and KPETS is a way to implement that benefit, Gerth remarked. KPETS teams bring cheer to residents of retirement communities, provide a comforting distraction to cancer patients and other hospitalized individuals, encourage adults and children in all different types of therapy sessions, and support reluctant learners and struggling readers. “Visiting schools can be anything from reading programs to working with life skills or multiple disability classes. The pet can motivate or calm in ways that amaze the staff (members), Gerth said. “We’ve heard over and over again about residents in health care or hospice settings who finally smile or even communicate when the therapy pet is with them. With the stay-at-home orders suspending in-person visits, KPETS volunteers utilized social media and other communication technologies to stay in touch with their clients. Some teams recorded themselves reading stories with their pets, while others encouraged children to read to their own animals. Virtual meetings were held with hospital and school staff members to know they are being thought of. One team created a video featuring a

happening. “We talked about a lot of different options, Burkholder recalled. “(We) decided that going with an online auction looked like a good choice. The online auction will feature many of the same categories of items as the live auction has in the past. Categories range from jewelry and home furnishings to kayaks and hunting bows. Gift certificates will be sold, and there will be special men’s and women’s auctions, as well as a children’s auction. Theme baskets, which have always been popular, will go up for bids as well. Special features this year will include a weekend getaway in Ocean City, N.J.; tickets to Eagles games; cornhole sets; a Traeger grill; and specialty meals, which include a pool party and dinner. During the auction, tickets will be sold to two special meals that will resemble the traditional Friday night meal and Saturday morning breakfast that have been held during the auction. Tickets are necessary to attend

these events. The breakfast will be held on Saturday, Sept. 12, at LAMS. The second will be a dinner theater held on Saturday, Oct. 17. “The (dinner) meal consists of roast beef, chicken, green beans, gourmet potatoes, and more, wrote Burkholder. Following the dinner, there will be entertainment by Ryan and Friends. Burkholder noted that funds raised by the auction will help keep tuition costs down to allow more students to receive a Christian education at LAMS. Organizers hope to raise $150,000 from the event. Readers who are interested in bidding may preview the auction items and register at www.lamsauction.info. “(The) website directs (potential bidders) to the GiveSmart website (for) bidding, explained Burkholder, who noted that bidders may register at any time. Individuals may also register by texting “LAMS to 76278. Readers with specific questions may call the school at 717-626-9551.

is down and blood pressure is down, (the body is healthier),” said Ababou, who noted that exercise can improve strength, balance, and coordination and that connecting wellness of the body with wellness of the mind can make for a more positive outlook. “We want to encourage people to find ways to get back to normal with precautions by following Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines,” Ababou said. With that thought in mind, the rec center has released a notice about how the organization is following the CDC guidelines. The notice, posted near the front desk in the center’s lobby, tells visitors about the efforts to keep the facility clean, the daily staff check-ins, the shields placed at the front desk, and the reduced capacity in program areas. It includes reminders about handwashing, wiping down equipment with approved disinfectants, and the new HVAC system that enables air quality monitoring. The notice concludes by stating that safe and

healthy recreation for staff, members, and guests, is among the rec center’s highest priorities and asking visitors to the center to join in taking recommended precautions, including avoiding close contact with people who are at risk; covering coughs and sneezes; avoiding touching their eyes, nose, and mouth; disinfecting frequently touched surfaces; and staying home if they are ill. Ababou noted that the rec center has been outfitted for socially distant exercise. “We are keeping our facilities clean for a safe return,” he said, noting that capacities for classes and in the fitness center have been reduced and floors have been marked for proper distancing. The center requests that members bring their own masks and towels. In the spin room, bikes are up to seven feet apart, and a card is required to register for one of only 16 spots. In the studio, the floor is marked for a capacity of 22 and classes last only 45 minutes. In the Body Pump room, there are yellow rectangles on the floor to assist with

Ababou pointed out that the center has new step and elliptical machines, treadmills, and recumbent bikes. In the weight room, all the machines are six feet apart. The pools are disinfected and treated with chlorine or bromine. Ababou recommended one-onone exercise with a personal trainer and masks for those who want to become more fit but are not sure how to get started. He noted that exercises like yoga or tai chi can be done alone or in socially distant groups and either

He also recommends massage therapy, counseling, coaching, and practicing gratitude. “Try to be positive,” said Ababou. “Let’s make sure we stay connected to (encourage) wellness of body and mind.” Readers who would like more information may visit www.lititzrec.com. Miller’s first effort to support the troops. “Recently a young man from our church enlisted in the Marines, and we have been praying for him, along with other service personnel who have so graciously given of their time to protect our great nation,” she said, adding that the opportunity to bake for an assigned member of the service was the least she could do to show support. “I hope to encourage our military to be courageous, to stand firm, and ultimately to trust in God for their hope and future,” she said. Inn Support of Our Troops was organized by Maria Coder, a public relations professional working with the Association of Lodging Professionals (ALP). The effort brought together more than 30 inns across the U.S. Inn Support of Our Troops worked with Soldiers’ Angels participating as Angel Bakers, which gave volunteers access to a database with the first name and state of a service member who had expressed interest in receiving baked goods. Soldiers’ Angels is a national charity providing aid, comfort, and resources to the military, veterans, and their families. Many of the participating inns were closed during the pandemic, which led to income loss and even financial hardship. The Inn Support of Our Troops effort gave bed-and-breakfast owners a chance to showcase their talents and reach out to members of the military serving far from home.

Rite Aid customers can support the lifesaving work of Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals during a critical time through Rite Aid’s annual Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign, running through Saturday, Aug. 8. Rite Aid customers can add a donation to their in-store transactions, as well as donate online through Rite Aid’s social media channels. All proceeds will be received by the local community’s children’s hospital to fund critical treatments and health care services and to provide pediatric medical equipment and charitable care for 53 children’s hospitals in the communities that Rite Aid serves. This year will mark the 26th year that Rite Aid has conducted the Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign benefiting CMN Hospitals, raising and donating $95 million in support of children’s hospitals. This year’s effort comes with an unprecedented pandemic adding urgency to the cause. Children’s hospitals and their systems are actively working to develop COVID-19 treatments and vaccines. At the same time, investments in telehealth service, personal protective equipment and coronavirus testing supplies have escalated hospitals’ expenses while the suspension of elective surgeries and routine procedures is costing hospitals revenue and impacting children in need of care. The Rite Aid Foundation will also direct funds raised through KidCents, its customer-generated charitable giving program dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children living in communities Rite Aid serves, through the duration of the campaign. In April, the foundation also issued a special $250,000 grant to CMN Hospitals to address immediate needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bridemaids were Morgan Wesson of Michigan; Lauren Landis of Lancaster, sister-in-law of the bride; Karissa Burkholder of Mount Joy, cousin-in-law of the bride; and Jade Ranger of India, sister of the groom.

Park Art Festival Canceled Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation has announced the cancellation of the annual Long’s Park Art Festival scheduled for Friday, Sept. 4, to Sunday, Sept. 6. The announcement is a response to the continued public health concern surrounding the coronavirus and COVID-19. Annually, the art festival welcomes 11,000 visitors from around the country to Long’s Park. Though the foundation is disappointed about the cancellation, it recognizes its social responsibility to ensure the public safety of the community. The foundation recognizes the significant financial burden this national crisis has created for many in the art community. The foundation is committed to supporting the artists who were accepted for this year’s festival based on a remote jury voting process held in March. In the coming weeks, a digital campaign will be developed to promote these artists with the goal of exhibiting their talent, while also encouraging buyers to purchase their work. Artists will be featured at www.longspark.org and social media channels including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn. To learn more about programs or stay up to date on the latest foundation news, readers may visit www.longspark.org.

some capacity. State Farm Neighborhood Assist aims to be a catalyst for that change. Individuals can submit a cause at www.neighborhoodassist.com. A submission guide is available on the website. State Farm will accept the first 2,000 submissions. The State Farm Review Committee will then narrow the field to the top 200 finalists. Voters will decide which community improvement projects win. The public will have a chance to vote 10 times a day, every day for 10 days, from Wednesday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Oct. 2, for their favorite causes from the list of finalists. The 40 causes that receive the most votes will each win a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Last year, 163,000 people cast a total of 4.4 million votes in support of their favorite causes, selecting winners from small towns and big cities. Since the program began, State Farm has awarded $8 million in support of more than 300 causes. For more information, readers may visit www.neighborhood assist.com or call their local State Farm agent.

Giant Completes Pollinator Field

FREE DELIVERY $100 OR MORE $

Butter Portions Cheese Cubes

In celebration of National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company recently announced it has completed a 7-acre pollinator-friendly solar field at its corporate headquarters at 1149 Harrisburg Pike in Carlisle. This initiative aims to create a synergistic environment, which contributes both to clean energy and support for bee and pollinator populations needed within the agriculture industry. Honey bees pollinate $15 billion worth of food crops in the United States each year, yet populations have been experiencing a decline for more than three decades, the Giant Company reported. Beekeepers across the United States lost an estimated 40.7% of their honey bee colonies from April 2018 to April 2019, according to the latest annual nationwide survey conducted by the University of Maryland-led nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership. A pollinator field provides Giant with an opportunity to educate team members, customers and the community about the role bees play in getting food onto their family’s table, noted Nicholas Bertram, president of the Giant Company. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture deputy secretary Cheryl Cook added that nearly one-third of the nation’s food

supply depends on pollinators, making bees an essential part of the food supply chain and ecosystem. The Giant Company has also been selected as the first grocery retailer and first Pennsylvania participant to take part in the National Renewable Energy Laboratory’s InSPIRE study, where scientists measure and track the performance of the pollinator-friendly ground cover for applications to future solar energy projects. FOR SALE - FREEZER BEEF EF Native seed mixes provided by Ernst Conservation Seeds will act as a vegetative solution to beautify the site and provide valuable ecological functions. The Giant Company hopes the native meadow established will create a habitat for pollinators, birds and other small wildlife while improving the quality of the soil beneath it, reducing runoff and creating an attractive backdrop to the site. The field includes more than 20 varieties of wildflowers native to the northeast and central Pennsylvania like butterfly milkweed, mountain mint, blue mistflower and golden Alexander. Robin Ernst, president of Ernst Pollinator Service, explained that as the field matures over the next few years, more than one million pollinator-attracting plants will provide pollen and nectar sources for honey bees and other pollinators, which will in turn pollinate local farm fields. The Giant Company also announced a new strategic partnership with Planet Bee Foundation. Based in San Francisco, Planet Bee is a nonprofit organization focused on driving awareness for pollinators while creating environmental stewards of all ages, in turn contributing to the well-being of bees. In celebration of the new partnership and National Pollinator Week, the Giant Company announced a $50,000 donation to Planet Bee Foundation. Planet Bee Foundation has constructed the beehives for the pollinator-friendly solar field and will tend to the health of the colonies as the bees provide their essential pollinator services to the local ecosystem. The foundation is also helping the Giant Company develop educational signs that will be installed along the on-campus walking path to drive awareness about the importance of bees to the grocery and agricultural supply chains.
