Trails are important part of healthy lifestyle for Warwick Township residents

Long ones, short ones. Open ones, wooded ones. Old ones, new ones. Public ones, private ones. Warwick Township is home to miles and miles of all kinds of them, but all local trails can lead to health and well-being.

Over the years, Warwick has directly and indirectly promoted physical activity and getting outdoors by fostering its ever-evolving trail system. Yet in another way, the township’s emphasis on trails can be seen as merely a reflection of its 30,000 residents’ interest in health.

“I’d say we have more trails than most communities,” said Brian Harris, Warwick’s township manager. “I think we value walkability and exercise. We want people to have recreational opportunities without having to drive, and the way you do that is by connecting some of these systems. There’s plenty of opportunities for recreation that exist in Warwick Township.”

The crown jewel of trails in Warwick Township is the Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail (WERT). The Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail, which runs along a former railroad bed, originates in Lititz and ends in downtown Ephrata.

The western 4 miles of WERT is maintained by Warwick Township, and the 7.5-mile trail also connects the municipalities of Akron Borough and Ephrata Township. Winding its way through wooded areas and picturesque farmland, the Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail is part asphalt and part crushed stone, and it features eight access points with parking lots and six restroom stops.

“People were talking about a rail trail for years,” said Barb Kreider, assistant secretary for Warwick Township, “but it was a tough project to tackle. People didn’t want to give up their land. Then it became a partnership.”

“The concept was, ‘If you build it, See Warwick trails pg 2

Dementia Friendly organization to host two seminars

Melody Karick, memory care educator and consultant with Garden Spot Village, is wellacquainted with internationally known dementia expert Teepa Snow. “I was blessed to be mentored by Teepa,” said Karick. “She does a great job of explaining (concepts and techniques). No matter what level of awareness you are at, she is easy to understand.”

Snow will return to Lancaster for

a second set of seminars after first offering a well-attended program in 2022. Sessions will be held on Thursday, Aug. 17, at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Rd, Lancaster. The morning session will run from 8 to 11:30 a.m., and the afternoon session will run from 12:30 to 4 p.m.

The morning session is designed for first responders, business organizations churches, and families. Snow will focus on discerning signs of dementia and providing

A fine day for fine art

On Saturday, July 29, the Lititz Art Association will present its 56th annual Lititz Outdoor Fine Art Show. The event will be conducted at Lititz Springs Park, 18 N. Broad St., from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Admission is free, and refreshments can be purchased through several concessions, including food trucks.

“With fine art, judges are looking for a level of depth in the work,” said Carolann Van Wyen, a member of the Lititz Art Association who’s handling media relations for the Outdoor Fine Art Show. “It’s artwork you can’t find See Fine art pg 8

they will come.’ And they did,” continued Kreider. “Slowly but surely, people changed their minds. Then the municipalities became involved.”

There are at least five other trail systems in Warwick Township, some of which exist on their own and some of which are associated with township parks. The township’s trails are used for walking, running, biking, and even cross-country skiing and snowshoeing in the winter.

Some of the trails, which are open year-round, dawn to

dusk, weather permitting, allow pets.

“(Trail users are) people who want to recreate for fitness and health purposes,” said Harris.

“It’s a mental component as much as a physical component,” said Kreider. “I think we all know the value of balancing work and play. It’s a way to just clear your head and walk a mile.”

Trails weren’t always as prevalent in Warwick Township as they are now. In fact, all of the trails currently maintained by the township originated in the early 1990s. In the future, trails may become even more prevalent, as there are plans to increase their

number and length.

“Our goal is to get as many communities linked as possible,” said Harris. “We understand that recreation is important in most people’s lives and that it contributes to a com-

munity in general.”

Playing to serve

In 1953, when she was 18 years old, June Smith began serving as assistant organist at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Manheim. She transitioned to full-time organist in 1972, and she’s been serving the church ever since.

St. Paul’s will recognize June’s 70 years of service with a celebration following the 9:30 a.m. worship on Sunday, July 23.

June, now 88, has been a member of St. Paul’s since she was 5 years old, just about the time she began taking piano lessons. As a teenager, she took organ lessons from the church’s organist, and when the organist moved away, Smith stepped in as her replacement.

“It’s my way of serving. When I started playing, and the church started to pay us, I was being paid $2 a week,” she recalled, noting that she bought her own music and that it cost her $5 a week to continue organ lessons, which she was taking with an instructor in Lancaster. “It was never about the money. I was just so thankful I had the opportunity to play and serve in this way.”

Since November, June has been a resident of Pleasant View Communities, where she has a room in assisted living. She still drives, and she has no plans to retire from serving as organist, noting, “I’m going to keep playing as long as I am able and competent.”

Pottery wheel classes posted

Lancaster Creative Factory offers ongoing pottery wheel classes throughout the year.

Adult wheel classes are held on Mondays from 9:30 a.m. to noon, noon to 2:30 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m.; Tuesdays, 6 to 8:30 p.m.; Wednesdays, 6 to 8:30 p.m.; and Thursdays, 1 to 3:30 p.m. and 6 to 8:30 p.m.

Teen wheel classes are offered on Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m., and youth wheel classes are held on Tuesdays from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

For more information and to register, visit www.lancastercreative factory.org and choose “Classes and Camps.” More information is available by emailing charrand. programslcf@yahoo.com or calling 717-676-0600.

A mother of three, June was married to Clark Smith for almost 60 years before he passed away seven years ago. She also has three grandchildren and one great-grandchild, with another great-grandchild on the way.

Over the years, she estimates she’s played the organ at more than 150 weddings and another 150 funerals, including the services for her mother, sister, brother and husband. “Some people asked me, ‘How could you play for your husband?’”

June remarked. “It was the last thing he asked me, and I told him, ‘If I can play for your service, I will.’ It was the last thing I could do for him.”

June has filled in as organist for different churches in the Manheim area and has played at several graduation ceremonies at Manheim Central High School. She directed the children’s choirs at St. Paul’s for 20 years, with each of her children serving as her accompa-

nist over the years.

At Pleasant View, she serves as organist once a month during the in-house church services. She also has a list of 45 cantatas she’s accompanied over the years throughout Lancaster County.

When June found out the church wanted to honor her seven decades of service, she was hesitant. “I asked them not to,” she stated with a laugh. “I’m a little embarrassed about it. I’m not playing for recognition. I just want to serve. Then the pastor sat me down and said, ‘June, we just want to say thank you,’ so I said, ‘OK.’”

safe and comfortable spaces.

The afternoon session will be directed at health care and senior care workers, and it will delve into advanced assessment methods and tools for working with those in late stages of dementia.

Snow is an occupational therapist with more than 40 years of clinical and academic experience. She has developed a trademarked model for understanding the progress of dementia and created the Positive Approach to Care training strategies. Karick emphasized that Snow’s presentations are effective because she gauges the audience and moves in the direction she feels will best serve them.

“One of the things she really stresses is the positive approach and getting to know the environment and the surroundings,” said Karick, noting that taking a breath and assessing the unique approach required by the situation is paramount. “Look at what is going on with that person,” Karick explained. “Are they in fight, fright, flight?” Next, Karick said, caregivers should use their words, tone of voice, and facial expressions to make it clear that they stand in support. “Make it known you are on their side,” she said.

“I always leave with an ‘aha’ moment,” said Karick of Snow’s seminars. “It’s not always rocket science, but rather, ‘I never thought of it

Two local students were honored with a scholarship from the Middle Atlantic AAU. Scholarship awards were based on achievements in both academics and athletics as well as community service involvement. The honorees are

that way,’” added Karick, pointing out that the training can be used in situations beyond caring for someone with dementia. “It’s very (applicable) to everyday life,” she said.

For those who are new to understanding dementia, Karick said that it is an umbrella term. “Think about flowers. There are petunias, roses. They are all flowers,” she said. “Dementia is not a diagnosis, and it is not memory loss,” she noted, adding that remembering whether or not you drove to a location might signal a dementia issue, whereas remembering where you parked your car generally does not.

There is a per session charge with an extra cost for an optional lunch. Readers are encouraged to register at www.dementiafriendly lancaster.org. Last year’s seminars sold out.

Fine art frompg 1

anywhere. It’s unique. The artists have their own personal styles. Many of the artists are schooled, and some are self-taught. A lot of work has been put into their artwork. Many have been creating art for their whole lives.”

Exhibition tables showcasing the work of over 140 artists from all over Pennsylvania and six other states will be set up throughout Lititz Springs Park. The featured artworks will include paintings in oil, acrylics, watercolor and pastels, as well as drawings, ceramics, mixed media pieces and sculpture.

Much of the artwork will be available for purchase, and $2,000 in prizes will be awarded in various categories.

“The mission is to foster and promote fine art and the artists,” said Van Wyen. “The Outdoor Fine Art Show exists to bring attention and focus to local artists from Lititz and Lancaster County, and to those from across six states. People can come and enjoy a day in beautiful Lititz Springs Park, and they are exposed to art and culture.”

Crowds in excess of 5,000 people are expected for the Lititz Outdoor Fine

Art Show, the largest and best attended of the five events that the Lititz Art Association conducts annually.

“The park is packed with people,” said Van Wyen. “The park is big, and the show is spread out. People can spend the whole day if they want to.”

The Lititz Outdoor Fine Art Show was originally formed in 1979 through the efforts of the Village Art Association and its president, Floyd Hackman. Over the years, the Village Art Association became the Lititz Art Association, and the show was moved from the streets of downtown Lititz to the shade and comfort of the park.

“It got so big that it was moved to the park to accommodate the number of artists,” said Van Wyen. “It just evolved into this higherend show. This show has become part of Lititz history. This year we had to add 15 tables for artists. We just keep evolving.”

“The Lititz Art Association is a thriving art association,” Van Wyen noted. “That’s exciting. The artists who come into town for the show are excited. We’re excited about what it does for the town of Lititz. It’s about exposing people to art and seeing that smile when they see our art.”
