A Community Of Recovery By Ann Mead Ash

For several years, TTC/Potter’s House has hoped to build a faith-based rehab facility to combat drug addiction. On July 14, TTC/Potter’s House staff, area representatives, and friends of the ministry gathered at 261 School Lane, Brownstown, located along the Conestoga River, to dedicate the property to that cause and break ground for the recovery center, to be called Still Waters. TTC/Potter’s House is a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and post-release prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. The organization is in the midst of a capital campaign seeking to raise $2 million for Still Waters Recovery See TTC/Potter’s House pg 3

Telling others about why the FoodStock Music Festival raises funds to support area organizations that are working toward eliminating hunger is easy for Tom Hayden. As one of FoodStock’s three founders, Hayden said that he became passionate about fighting hunger 26 years ago, when the postal service held its first Stamp Out Hunger food drive. As a postal service worker, Hayden had the chance to pick up thousands of donations and deliver 12,000 pounds of food to the Ephrata Food Bank. “We overwhelmed our local food bank with donations. This was in May, and I said, ‘This ought to last you through the year,’ and the guy said, See FoodStock pg 2

‘Actually, this won’t even last us past July,’” recalled Hayden. “That’s when it hit me how big the need was.” “This is a problem that flies under the radar. Hunger has a certain stigma to it,” said Hayden, noting that although it is a widespread issue, people oftentimes do not want to admit to struggling with it. Hardworking people often still face the choice of deciding between heat for their homes or food for their families, and Hayden believes that is something everyone can pitch in to help change. Hayden, Bobby D. Jones, and Todd Fuginetti formed FoodStock, a nonprofit organization, in 2011 as a way to combine their shared passion for music and helping others. Every summer, the organization hosts the FoodStock Music Festival as a way to raise funds for area organizations working to end hunger. This year’s event will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, in the Barn and Barrel Courtyard at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim. The music festival will include performances by Steel Radiance, Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra, Benjamin Vo Blues Band, solo guitarist Rob Reese, and Hydroponic Philharmonic. Headlining the event at 5 p.m. will be Vinyl Groov, a Harrisburg-based band that plays everything from Motown to modern hits. “They’re an event in and of themselves,” Hayden said. “We try to keep it fresh, so we have a really eclectic mix of performers this year.” Food and beverages will be available to purchase, and a variety of arts and craft vendors from throughout

central Pennsylvania will have items for attendees to browse and buy. Giveaways and silent and Chinese auctions are planned as well, with items including autographed CDs, Beatles memorabilia, a black five-piece Pearl Roadshow complete drum set, original artwork, a wedding photography package, tickets to area attractions and restaurants, and more. To purchase tickets to the FoodStock Music Festival, interested individuals may visit www.foodstockpa.org. Admission for children age 12 and under is free. Proceeds from the 2018 event will primarily benefit Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), as well as Water Street Mission and other local food banks and pantries. “We have a main beneficiary every year, but then we break it down and choose other organizations, too,” Hayden explained. FoodStock always donates to the food bank in the town where the event is hosted, so the Manheim Central Food Pantry will benefit again this year. “We just want people to come out and enjoy the spirit of the event,” said Hayden. “There’s a lot of people out there in need. One circumstance - one illness, the loss of a spouse - can change it all. I think a lot of people take that for granted,” he reflected. For more details, readers may visit www.foodstockpa.org or www.facebook.com/foodstock musicfestivalpa.

Center, which will include a 30- to 90-day intensive program in a controlled environment. Wendell Metzler and Ryan Forbes opened the groundbreaking event by telling their story of an unlikely friendship between a repeat offender, Forbes, and a police officer, Metzler. As Forbes finished speaking, he began to compare the fallow ground near the river to the fallow ground in the hearts of those fighting addiction, noting that the new center will provide the opportunity for the seed of Christ’s love to be planted in those hearts. Lloyd Hoover, executive director of TTC/Potter’s House, echoed Forbes’ thoughts as he noted that Still Waters can be a place that tells a new story of recovery from addiction. “I declare here today

the need for a higher power (to overcome addiction) is an absolute necessity, and that higher power is Jesus Christ, our Lord,” said Hoover. “This place (can) become a place of transformation and recovery, and today we are turning soil for a new day.” Rob Wetherholtz, associate ministry director for TTC/Potter’s House, whose family had owned the land along the river for decades, spoke of a vision the Lord gave him for the property as a place of healing for the lost and addicted in need of a way home. “This is where we come to the green pastures beside the still waters,” he said, referencing both the 23rd Psalm and the name of the facility. Jay Myelin, member of the TTC/Potter’s House board, noted

that the capital campaign that the organization began a year ago has raised $750,000. “We have a long way to go yet, but we have a great start,” he said, adding, “But it’s not about the numbers and buildings; (it’s about the staff ’s) heart and vision for transformation of lives. … There is nothing we do any more rewarding than that.” Rep. Keith Greiner of the 43rd District told the gathering that he grew up not far from the site of the ground breaking. “In Harrisburg, we know there’s a problem with opioid addiction, and we are trying to do things legislatively,” said Greiner. “But a ministry like this can mean a story like Ryan and Wendell’s can happen to a lot of people.” Rep. Dave Zimmerman of the 99th District said that the Still Waters setting brought to mind the need for quiet spaces. “In Scripture, Jesus would find a

July 25, 2018 - 3

secluded place (to pray),” he said. “For all those who struggle with addictions, there is hope.” As representatives and friends of the ministry stepped forth to take hold of shovels and turn the earth, Samuel Mwangi, pastor of Carpenter Community Church in Brownstown, offered the prayer of dedication. “We are trusting God that this property is not just buildings and a curriculum,” said Mwangi. “We are trusting God for a divine power to change every life that steps on this property, (where) the name of Jesus will be honored as lives are changed.” Following the dedication, five clients of TTC/Potter’s House gave their lives to Christ and were baptized in the river adjacent to the property. Readers who would like to know more about the ministry may visit www.transitionto community.com.

This year marks 75 years in business for Ruhl Insurance, a four-generation, locally owned and operated independent insurance agency. Started in 1943 by Jacob “Jake H. Ruhl, Ruhl Insurance originally offered insurance, real estate, tax preparation, and notary services. Jake strongly believed that ethical responsibility exceeds legal obligation and conducted his business practices accordingly. Upon Jake’s involvement in the founding of the Manheim Auto Auction, the insurance agency was transitioned to Donald E. Ruhl in 1959. During this time, numerous relationships with both local and national insurance providers were created and solidified as Ruhl Insurance further established itself as one of the leading insurance agencies in Lancaster County. The subsequent two decades of agency growth required a move from the office located on South Main Street in Manheim to the current location on Market Square in Manheim. In 1983, the George H. Danner building, a turn-of-the-century mercantile store and local landmark, was renovated and furnished in such a way to preserve as much of the structure’s history as possible. Donald’s wife, Janice, was instrumental in spearheading these efforts, and she still owns the building today. The agency is currently owned by and operated by president and CEO Nevin Dourte, the son-in-law of Donald and Janice Ruhl and a lifelong resident of northern Lancaster County. Before joining Ruhl Insurance in 1988, Nevin and his wife, Doneen, operated a dairy farm in Manheim. Under Nevin’s leadership and production efforts, the agency further expanded its geographical footprint and client base outside of the Lancaster County area and diversified its product offerings to reach new markets and economic sectors. “A lot has changed, Nevin said, “but one thing that will always remain the same is our commitment to Jake’s philosophy that our ethical responsibility to our clients, (our) employees, and our companies must always exceed our legal obligations. Lesson Highlights Drone Technology Lititz Christian School recently hosted Russ Flahive and Keegan Flahive from Argos Unmanned Aerial Solutions for a lesson and demonstration of drone technology. As a recently retired army pilot, Russ has expertise in the field of drone technology. He explained to the students that drones were first developed for military use but have since been adopted for civilian implementations. The range of uses for drones includes everything from the travel industry to security and multiple engineering innovations. Searchand-rescue teams use drones to seek out survivors in dangerous terrain, and the agriculture industry makes use of drone technology to manage crops more efficiently. Models of the drones were on display,
