Judy Simmons’ spirit lives on in “Around the Bend”
BY JEFF FALKTriathlons
are demanding tests of athletic stamina, determination and preparedness. They’re also great tests of character. The Lititz recCenter’s annual triathlon will be contested on Sunday, Aug. 6, beginning at 8 a.m.
That’s when some of the fittest athletes around will descend on Lititz to compete against opponents, the clock and themselves.
“Our goal is to keep people moving in different ways, to keep people healthy,” said Lititz recCenter’s fitness director, Simon Ababou. “ We want to provide exceptional fitness programs to the community. It’s about taking care of yourself. We understand the benefits of being healthy. We always say, ‘Fitness is fun.’”
Nearly 250 athletes from Lititz, Manheim, Ephrata, New Holland, Lancaster, York, Philadelphia, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and New York are expected to compete in this year’s Lititz recCenter triathlon. Contestants range in age from 13 to 75.
Participants can compete individually or in teams of two or three. Prizes and medals will be awarded to the top three female and top three male finishers in each age group.
“(The competitors) come from all over,” said Ababou. “Most of them know each other, and you can see them conversing. Some of them are very serious athletes. They train hard and compete, and they want to push hard and beat their time. It isn’t easy for them.”
As a competition, the Lititz recCenter triathlon is composed of three components: a 300-meter swim, a 15.8-mile bike ride and a 3.1-mile run. Conditioning plays a huge role in success, and for some participants simply finishing is an accomplishment.
All lives reach a conclusion. But books possess the power to live forever.
Judy Simmons’ book, “Around the Bend,” is a tribute to her death and her life.
A resident of Lititz, Judy passed away on Christmas Day 2022 following a long, debilitating illness, about two weeks after she completed her one and only book. In the early days of June, through the continued love and support of her family, “Around the Bend” was published on Amazon.
The story of how the 180-page book came to be published is as compelling as the inspirational novel itself.
“Judy was a really serious Christian woman,” said Ernie Simmons, Judy’s husband of 60 years. “She felt like God wanted her to do this
book. She had prayed about it for years. When she got healthy enough to write again, that’s what See “Around the Bend” pg 2
Three decades of ASSETS
BY ANN MEAD ASH“Historically, we’ve done a lot of work in Lancaster city,” said Kevin Nofziger, business development officer with ASSETS. “But more of our clients are coming from all over the county.”
On Tuesday, Sept. 12, ASSETS will celebrate 30 years serving Lancaster with an event at Southern Market, 100 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets, which are necessary to attend the event, called ASSETS at 30, may be purchased at https://assets-at -30.eventbrite.com.
ASSETS was started by the Mennonite Economic Development Associates (MEDA) in an effort to create stateside opportunities for entrepreneurs. “We are a CDFI (community development financial
institution),” said Nofziger, who noted the organization plans to expand beyond Lancaster County. ASSETS can offer loans from $1,000 to $50,000. Three main lending products are available: a small business loan of up to $10,000; an impact loan of up to $30,000, and a special Reimagining Our Community loan of up to $10,000 for one year at 1%, accompanied by a 30% matching grant. Loans are only the beginning of what ASSETS offers. Entrepreneurial training programs and boot camps, which run from six to 10 weeks, include the Business Validator and Incubator classes, housed in the Women’s Business Center. ASSETS marketing coordinator Kirsten McWilliams said the Incubator offers entrepreneurs the opportunity to “fine tune strategies

we were going to do.”
A writer of Christian articles, Judy was inspired to start “Around the Bend” after a conversation with her pastor at church 19 years earlier. “God has a book,” he had said, “that He wants you to write.”
In 2021, her doctors informed the 75-year-old Judy that she didn’t have long to live and they couldn’t do much for her. Over the last few months of her life, from June of 2022 to this past Christmas, finishing “Around the Bend” became Judy’s goal. She even went as far as dictating the final few chapters over the phone due to her declining health.
“She knew she had to do whatever she had to do to get the book done,” said Ernie. “For her to be able to complete it was an absolute miracle.”
“She felt like these characters were inside of her ready to come out,” Ernie continued. “She’d be driving in the car, and she’d see something, and she’d say, ‘I need to put that in the book.’ She would write the final chapter and say, ‘I think this is supposed to happen, too.’ It has a wonderful ending. It just all comes together.”
Judy, who had a background in counseling women and marriage counseling, and Ernie are the parents of five
Lititz Triathlon
The contest begins with swimming at Lititz Springs Pool. Then after hopping on their two-wheelers, the competitors traverse three challenging hills during the riding of the bicycle course between Lititz and Manheim.
The final leg of the event involves a moderate run through downtown Lititz streets and neighboring roadways.
“For some people, their strength is their swim, and their weakness is their run,” said Ababou. “Some people struggle with the swim. And others are like, ‘Just wait ’til I get to my bike; I’ll show you what I can do.’”
The Lititz recCenter triathlon serves as a fundraiser for its youth programs.
“It’s a community event,”
said Ababou. “It’s bringing people from different cities and states to Lititz. It’s also great for the local businesses.”
Since the inception of the Lititz recCenter triathlon, the number of competitors has grown by more than 100. It’s also gained a certain reputation in the triathlon community.
“We have people telling us all the time, ‘We like your event. It’s well-organized,’” said Ababou. “When I started it nine years ago, I saw people were asking for more outdoor events. I figured, ‘Let’s add value to our membership.’ Every year it has grown just a little.”

children. Ernie said that the key to the longevity of their union was that “we never stopped dating.”
“Her passing was wonderful,” said Ernie. “I know that’s a strange thing to say, but she was plagued by back pains and congestive heart failure and other things that competed with her time and love for life.”
“We celebrated Christmas Eve like we always did,” concluded Ernie. “My sister and our daughter put her to bed. The next day when she woke, she got out of bed, and she walked three steps and fell to her knees. I laid her down on the floor, and on the way down she said, ‘Oh, Jesus!’
She apparently saw Jesus and she died.”

Chocolate Tour will raise funds for cancer research
BY CATHY MOLITORISOn Saturday, Aug. 5, the 13th annual Donegal Insurance Chocolate Tour will kick off from the Manheim Farm Show Complex, 502 E. Adele Ave. It will feature six bike routes, ranging from 10 miles to 100 miles, with participants rolling out between 7 and 8:30 a.m. A 2-mile fun walk will begin at 9 a.m. Proceeds from the tour will benefit cancer research.
“The routes wander through the scenic southcentral Pennsylvania countryside that highlight the beauty of the area, the history of farming and the tradition of chocolate that the area is well known for,” said Will Stone, Chocolate Tour committee member. “The longer routes inevitably take the cyclists through covered bridges. All routes have full support, including rest stops and mechanical support.”
The fun walk is dog-friendly and will take participants through the covered bridge at the Farm Show complex and along the Chiques Creek trail, explained Cheryl Gamber, Chocolate Tour committee member. She noted that chocolate treats will be
offered along the trail, and ice cream will be provided for all at the end of the route, including pup cups for canine participants.
“The Chocolate Tour is a family-friendly event,” Gamber said. “Cycling and walk participants are treated to lunch, hydrating beverages, Kreider’s ice cream, a (giveaway drawing) and, of course, lots of chocolate,” she stated.
Throughout its 13-year history, the Chocolate Tour has provided seed money for initial research projects that have led to larger cancer research grant awards for the Penn State College of Medicine and Penn State Cancer Institute, she shared. “Currently, $2 million in cancer research grants are active at the College of Medicine as a result of Chocolate Tour funds,” Gamber said.
Some of the bike rides are dedicated to cyclists who have passed away from cancer in the past year, she remarked, noting that the 100-mile ride is dedicated to Jim Wilson of Hummelstown, while the 50mile ride is dedicated to Rich Snively of Lititz. The 35-mile ride is dedicated to Glenn Curtis of Bernville, and the 25mile ride is dedicated to Bernhard Robertson of Johns
Creek, Ga. The 10-mile ride is dedicated to John Richie of Hummelstown.
Stone emphasized that people can support the Chocolate Tour even if they cannot attend in person on Aug. 5. “Join us virtually by signing up, picking your favorite route and riding anytime between Aug. 6 and Aug. 8, and enjoy the scenery,” he said. “Please post any ride pictures on social media, and don’t forget to use #23choctour.”
Vendors will also be on-site during the Chocolate Tour, including Penn State Department of Dermatology, Excel Physical Therapy, HQ Water
Solutions and Hush Money Bikes. 2023 Chocolate Tour sponsors include Donegal Insurance Group, Cargill, PSECU and Northwest Bank. For more information, to register or to donate, visit www.bikesignup.com/Race/Pa /Manheim/ChocolateTour.
Lititz recCenter, 301 W. Maple St., Lititz, will offer PWR!Moves (Parkinson Wellness Recovery), a wellness program for people with Parkinson’s disease, beginning in August. Community members may try the class for free on Thursday, July 27, from 4 to 5 p.m. Caregivers are welcome to attend.
PWR!Moves group classes were developed by Dr. Becky Farley, a physical therapist, neuroscientist and Parkinson’s exercise specialist. ASSETS CEO Jamie Arroyo called the organization a “one-stop shop for starting and growing a business.”
“Entrepreneurs can come to us to develop a business plan and
get in-depth information on financing,” he said. “Our biggest strength is that we pair education with training and lending.” Arroyo added, “We are going to walk alongside the entrepreneur on their journey.”
