Farm Markets Go To Green (Phase)
Coin Auction Will Help Support MCC
By Ann Mead Ash
Because they provide food, farm markets were considered essential businesses when businesses were closed under COVID-19 restrictions, but that does not mean that the organizations were not affected by changes in shopping patterns in the economy that resulted from the shutdown. “The pandemic has changed the typical summer landscape for many, and that includes our local farmers and small businesses,” said Dani Decker, manager of communications for Lancaster’s Central Market Trust. Located at 23 N. Market St., Lancaster, the local icon remained open throughout the coronavirus pandemic. “We have been actively providing updates to the community online on what stands are open and any operational changes that have needed to happen,” reported Decker. Kristofer Bucher, manager of Harvest Lane Farm, 851 E. Oregon Road, Lititz, noted that the market stays open year round, but this spring he was pleased to find more customers than usual wanting to shop there. “I think the small format gave and continues to give a lot of people the confidence to shop (locally) during the pandemic,” said Bucher. The farm added an online store and offered both pickup and See Farm Markets pg 6

The Pennsylvania Relief Sale, which supports the work of Mennonite Central Committee (MCC), is an institution in the state. Held yearly at the Pennsylvania Farm Show building in Harrisburg, the event has been known to feature close to 400 handcrafted quilts, wall hangings, and comforters, along with opportunities to shop for handmade items and gifts and to bid on unique items during the Country Auction, Silent Auction, and Children’s Auction. The event is also known for homemade food and family-friendly activities. This year, however, due to COVID-19 restrictions, the auction was canceled. See Coin Auction pg 4
EPC Golf Outing To Aid Good Samaritan Services
By Ann Mead Ash
By Dayna M. Reidenouer
When COVID-19 restrictions meant that Elizabeth Martin of Gap, a student in Janice Beitzel’s Lancaster-Lebanon IU13 deaf and hard of hearing class located at Warwick High School, was no longer being bused to Lititz from Pequea Valley School District each weekday, she grew a little bored. Although distance learning began in April, by the end of that month, Elizabeth was looking for more activity, specifically activity that allowed her to make a contribution. “I normally sew or crochet,” said Elizabeth. “Since (the virus) was happening, I thought I should help (in some way). I started making the regular masks.” Using her grandmother Betty Risser’s sewing machine, Elizabeth could turn out a two-layer cotton mask fairly quickly. “At the beginning, I made the regular masks, and I sold them from a table outside my house,” reported Elizabeth, whose mother, Sally, noted that those masks sold well. Then Beitzel shared that she was making masks with windows that allow for lip reading. “My See Making Masks pg 4
Now more than ever, thanks to jobs and wages lost while the stay-at-home order was in place, resources for people experiencing homelessness or at risk of losing their homes are in demand. Thankfully, Good Samaritan Services (GSS), which serves individuals and families in Lancaster and Chester counties who have poverty-related needs, is prepared to help.
“We provide a wide spectrum of services that are customizable to each individual or family at whatever place they are at in their journey to stability,” said Shadoe Settle, GSS development and communications coordinator. “Our services are always expanding. Right now, we provide emergency shelter, residential housing, and housing support services to men, women, and families in Lancaster and Chester counties. Serving men is a new ability in Lancaster County, and we are very excited about it.” Although the need for the services provided by GSS has increased, the organization has been able to keep the lives of its See EPC Golf Outing pg 2

relationship with GSS to assist them in aiding families right here in our community.” The 2019 EPC Golf Outing raised $20,000, and the goal this year is to meet or surpass that total with the help of golfers and sponsors, Hillegas said. The 13th annual EPC Golf Outing will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, at Crossgates Golf Club, 1 Crossland Pass, Millersville. Tee times of 7 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. are available. The event had initially been planned for June. “Like many other events this year, we were faced with the decision to cancel or reschedule our event,” Hillegas commented. “We know how much this event impacts families right here in our Lancaster County and Chester County communities, so we made the decision to reschedule the June outing for September. The health and safety of our golfers and volunteers was the main driving force behind this decision, and we look forward to what a fall golf outing for this event will look like.” The Tee It Forward contest hole that was introduced last year will be continued. Hillegas noted that while this year’s event will include bag lunches from Trio Bar and Grill, chicken barbecue from Peters’ BBQ will also be available. Chicken barbecue had been a feature of the EPC Golf Outings a few years ago, and Hillegas and her team are pleased to bring it back. existing participants stable, thanks to support from the community. “Our ability to provide support and guidance during this time enabled all of our participants to remain in their housing, pay their bills, and continue life as normally as possible during such an abnormal time,” Settle said. As with other organizations, the delivery of services had to change, requiring flexibility from both the GSS team members and participants. GSS continued to provide emergency shelter and residential housing services while maintaining state-issued safety requirements and conducting cautious intakes for new clients. GSS family resource coordinators met with participants via Zoom, FaceTime, WhatsApp, and other virtual-meeting software to provide housing support services. The financial impact of COVID-19 will be felt for a long time to come, and GSS expects the need for its services to increase, Settle said. The nonprofit organization depends on donations and fundraisers to operate. One such fundraiser is the golf outing hosted by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC). “Our partnership with EPC and their willingness to organize such a wonderful event has been an incredible blessing, financially and relationally,” Settle remarked. “This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year, and it has continued to provide funds needed to perform all of our services.” “ We recognize the impact that this nonprofit has on our own neighbors in the same areas that we serve as a company,” said EPC marketing director Lauren Hillegas. “We’re honored to build this

The Lancaster Optimist Club has supported local youths this summer by providing activity bags. The club delivered a total of 101 activity bags to four shelters in Lancaster city on June 30. The club supports these four shelters throughout the year. Recipients included the Transitional Living Center (TLC), Clare House and Milagro House. The activity bags were the result of many weeks of work by the local club members and friends. Each bag contained a book, arts and craft items and physical activity items. Many groups provided items for inclusion in the bags. Art of Recycle in Ephrata, Lancaster Creative Reuse, Otterbein United Methodist Church (UMC), Pearl Street UMC, Ross Street UMC, LANCO Federal Credit Union, and Home Depot were of few of the partners.
Items chosen for the bags were age-appropriate. Bags for children ages 3 and 4 contained balls, flying discs, sidewalk chalk, primary wooden beads and/or blocks and a book. Children ages 5 to 8 received jump ropes with jump rope rhymes, balls, a wooden craft and a book. Children ages 9 to 11 were given bead kits, foam kits, a large beach ball, playing cards, flying discs and a book. For children age 12 and up, the Optimist Club provided painting sets, journals, a large beach ball, a flying disc, jewelry making kits and a book. The bags also included construction paper, plain paper, glue, mixed media kits, a tic-tac-toe game, pens, pencils, a pencil sharpener, scissors, crayons and other craft supplies. On July 15, the Optimist Club of Lancaster partnered with Ross Street UMC and provided 115 activity bags during the church’s

Making Masks from pg 1 teacher showed me one she made with the window,” said Elizabeth. “That inspired me to make more for other people.” Elizabeth searched online for designs before drawing her own design. The masks are made from cotton with vinyl in the center so the lips show. She makes the masks in small, medium, and large sizes for both adults and children, and she can make larger ones for adults if necessary. Sally noted that at certain times supplies to make the masks were hard to find. “We had to get inventive (when) there was a lack of materials,” she said. “We started with everything we could find at the house, but when she started selling
them and she was selling out, we had to get more material and elastic.” When elastic for the earloops was hard to find, they decided to try hair bands, which Elizabeth said work well for this purpose. “It was an evolving (design),” Sally said. By the end of June, Elizabeth had made about 200 masks. Although it is now easier to get supplies, Sally said the masks with the vinyl window have not sold as quickly as the all-cotton ones. “Most orders are through the IU13 program,” said Sally, who noted that an article about Elizabeth’s efforts was posted at the IU13 website, and classmates and their family members have been interested. Elizabeth takes
special orders for the masks by email at LizMartinmasks@outlook.com. Orders can be picked up or mailed to the purchaser. Although the masks are made with those who have a hearing impairment and read lips in mind, they are also useful for those who work in certain jobs where it is advantageous for others to see their smile, such as day cares. Both Elizabeth and Sally noted that the project has been educational for Elizabeth. “My money management (skills have improved),” said Elizabeth. “I am meeting new people too.” “This was a real good growing experience for her,” said Sally, who added that Elizabeth took on the project with minimal help. “She took hold of this and went to town with it. I am really proud of her.”
Coin Auction from pg 1 Steven Stoltzfus of Leola, who has long been involved with the relief sale, along with a group of volunteers wanted to help make up for some of the funds lost due to the cancellation. “We’re holding just the coin auction,” reported Stoltzfus. A variety of donated coins have been gathered to be sold at an auction that will be both live and online at the same time. The live auction will be held at the Bareville Fire Hall, 211 E. Main St., Leola, on Friday, Aug. 14, beginning at 5 p.m. At the same time, the auction will be held online through https://hibid.com. The auction preview will be held beginning at 4 p.m. The complexities of handling online bidding and live bidding simultaneously will be addressed by having two auctioneers working in conjunction with each other. “The way this works, there will be an auctioneer bid calling with people in the audience, and, in addition, there will be a clerk sitting nearby with the computer,” explained Stoltzfus. Pre-bids may be placed online, with lots closing live at 5 p.m. “If someone puts in a pre-bid, that is the starting bid. When we are auctioning a particular lot live, a person can be on the computer to enter live bids.” Both internet bids and floor bids will be announced. “The clerk will report bids coming in by computer to the live
auctioneer,” said Stoltzfus, who noted that the bidding link will be posted at https://pareliefsale.org. Lead coins in the auction will be a 1904 $2.50 gold piece, a 1997 American Eagle $5 gold coin, a one-tenth ounce gold piece, and a one-quarter ounce gold piece. A 10-ounce silver bar and an 1884-CC Morgan dollar will be sold, as will a 1925 Stone Mountain half dollar and 1923 Monroe/Adams centennial half dollar. An 1866 three-cent piece will go up for bids as well. “We will also have a nice selection of 2013 and 2020 Silver Eagles,” said Stoltzfus. In addition to the coin auction, a food fundraiser will be held at the Bareville Fire Company on Aug. 14, beginning at 4 p.m. It will include wings, french fries, and a beverage sold as a meal. Food will be sold on a drive-through
or takeout basis. “We are hoping the income from the food will offset expenses of the auction to increase the coin auction profit,” said Stoltzfus, who noted that some of the food is being donated. All profits from the sale will help to support the work of MCC, with the goal of sharing God’s love and compassion by helping to meet basic human needs and making efforts for peace and justice. COVID-19 safety procedures will be in place. More information about the sale may be found at the aforementioned website. Readers with specific questions may call 717-725-1383.
A variety of donated coins will be sold at a live and online auction at the Bareville Fire Hall, 211 E. Main St., Leola, on Friday, Aug. 14, beginning at 5 p.m. Funds raised by the auction will benefit Mennonite Central Committee. The auction is being organized by the board members of the Pennsylvania Relief Sale, which was canceled due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Schreiber Rubber Duckie Race Moves Online postponed are finding new dates. The softball weekend will be held from Friday to Sunday, Aug. 21 to 23, and the Golf Classic will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 21. “We will keep making adjustments as we go,” DeBord said, “and we will keep telling our story. This place has been around for 84 years. I have faith that the staff, our leadership, and this community will do what’s necessary to make sure we’re still here on the other side of COVID.” Additionally, Schreiber has moved its iconic Rubber Duckie Race online. This year’s race would have been the 32nd event, but the tens of thousands of racing ducks will not take their trip down the Conestoga River at Lancaster County Central Park. Instead, a special
online duckie event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, to determine prize winners. Tickets went on sale July 1 and will be available at www.schreiberpediatric.org/events/duckies or in person at Duckie Central, also known as Schreiber’s financial development office, 610 Community Way, Lancaster. Ticket sales will end on Saturday, Sept. 12. Proceeds from ticket sales will be matched by the Stabler grant. COVID-19 prompted the shift to a virtual duckie race, and there will be other ways this year’s event will look different. Schreiber supporters are encouraged to purchase tickets online to limit personal contact during duckie transactions. According to Dan Fink, director of marketing and public relations for the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, this is just the second time that Schreiber has received a $250,000 matching grant in its 84-year history, and both times it has come from the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation. “This one comes at a critical moment for us as we work to navigate a COVID-19 world,” Fink remarked. “Like many nonprofits, we’re facing a challenging period in the next 12 months.” The grant will provide a dollar-for-dollar match for all the money raised by Schreiber starting June 11, when the Stabler Foundation forwarded its approval. Stabler has committed up to $250,000, and Schreiber has one year to raise the matching funds. The initial $250,000 grant combined with what Schreiber hopes to raise from the community would mean $500,000 for the local organization, matching the amount generated from a similar grant by the Stabler Foundation in 2016. That grant was the largest contribution toward adding an infant room to Schreiber’s Circle of Friends Academy child care center. “This grant couldn’t have come at a better time for Schreiber,” said Schreiber president James DeBord. “Obviously,
with everything happening around COVID-19, raising revenue is even more of a concern than usual. The community rallied around us, as it always does, these past three months, but we don’t know what challenges are ahead of us. This grant and the matching dollars it generates will give us a significant boost at a critical time in our fundraising.” Schreiber has gradually phased in services in various departments. It has been open and providing limited therapy and behavioral health services, primarily through telehealth sessions, since early April. Circle of Friends Academy reopened on June 8. Camp Schreiber began operating virtually on June 22. In addition, some Schreiber fundraising events that were limited, delayed, or

Diana Stoltzfus, assistant manager with Brook Lawn Farm Market, 2325 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, said the farm staff did not let the pandemic change their outlook. “We are doing what we have always done over the years,” she shared. “Our focus continues to be on growing and selling high-quality, homegrown fruits and vegetables in season.” Recently, the market featured its own sweet corn, which is picked fresh daily, as well as peaches, squash, eggplant, Shishito peppers, and more. In season, the market will offer more than 50 varieties of heirloom tomatoes. Safety procedures for customers and employees have been foremost in the minds of market owners. that online shopping and sameday contactless curbside pickup are available. Bucher stated that Harvest Lane would like to see shoppers visit local growers. “Now is the time to support local food in season,” he said, adding that the market’s offerings are produced on local farms and utilize local processing facilities. Decker concurred. “Our standholders (at Central Market) are people you know and trust,” she said, noting that the market offers community and conversation, along with items for purchase. “While that looks different right now, it is important to remember that these community members need our support and that they are doing everything they can to provide a safe experience.”

Stoltzfus said Brook Lawn is following the state guidelines, as well. “We limit the number of customers inside the market when necessary, and we have
installed protective barriers at our checkout.” The market requires masks be worn to enter. Also, surfaces are sanitized regularly, and shopping carts and baskets are sanitized after each use. Hand sanitizer is available at the entrance and exit. “We … are committed to providing a safe, clean environment for our employees and our customers,” she said. Each market is currently promoting the reasons that area residents should pay it a visit. Stoltzfus pointed out that Brook Lawn is an open-air market and that the layout was recently redesigned to promote one-way traffic to flow easily to the checkout area. “ We are working hard to serve our customers in (ways) they are most comfortable,” she said, noting

Global Leadership Summit Slated The Global Leadership Network (GLN) is making inroads for business, nonprofit and ministry leaders around the world to learn, connect and glean inspiration for being world-changers by providing digital options of its annual Global Leadership Summit (GLS) in addition to the in-person sessions. The GLS, to be held on Thursday, Aug. 6, and Friday, Aug. 7, will also livestream in U.S. prisons, halfway houses, homeless shelters, rescue missions and human trafficking survivor organizations at no cost, enabling GLN to reach more under-resourced audiences than ever before. Additionally, GLN has discounted this year’s GLS ticket prices to enable individuals who have been financially affected by the COVID-19 pandemic to join. With the theme of “You Have Influence,” the GLS will include more than 15 world-class faculty, including Craig Groeschel, Amy Edmondson, Kaká, and T.D. Jakes, who will share their perspectives, equipping attendees with practical skills that attendees can apply. As before, the GLS will telecast live from the Chicago area to hundreds of host locations across the country. These host sites will welcome attendees into a local experience where they can network with influencers and leaders in their community while furthering their own leadership skills. For those unable to join a local host site, an enhanced virtual experience will be provided, expanding the level of interactivity in an all-new digital platform. In-person gatherings will take place at the LCBC Church - Manheim Campus, 2392 Mount Joy Road, Manheim, and LCBC Church - Ephrata Campus, 6 Hahnstown Road, Ephrata. To learn more, readers may visit https://globalleadership.org/ global-leadership-summit/.
