Lititz Lions Car Cruise is about what’s under the hood

Eversince Henry Ford rolled his first Model T off the assembly line, Americans have been obsessed with automobiles. Driving, accessorizing vehicles and tinkering have never gone out of style.

It’s a fascination that the Lititz Lions Club is more than happy to explore.

On Wednesday, Aug. 16, the Lititz Lions Club will conduct a car cruise from 5:30 to 9 p.m. on several blocks of East Main Street in the borough. More than 200 models of cars, from classic to modern to antique, will line both sides of the street, making one of the Lititz Lions Club’s biggest fundraisers a festive event.

“Some people have grown up with cars,” said Meghan Clair, the chairperson for the Lititz Lions Club Car

Cruise. “They may have an emotional connection with their cars. A lot of people like to tinker. It might be their hobby. It might be their passion. They’re very invested in it. They want their cars to be as good as possible. It’s their thing.”

Broad Street together.

“ We’ll have a DJ, some of the local businesses will stay open later and people can walk and look at cars on both sides of the street,” said Clair. “We have a lot of local people entered, some from out of state and people who have participated in the event in the past. Our spectators are coming to look at the cars. They and the owners are the aficionados.”

TheLancaster Bicycle Club exists to promote the sport of bicycling, advocate for the safety of riders and provide members with cycling opportunities. Few events exemplify that mission better than the Covered Bridge Classic.

On Sunday, Aug. 20, the 400member Lancaster Bicycle Club

will stage the 44th editionof its annual Covered Bridge Classic at seven start/finish points across northern Lancaster County. Some 1,300 bicycling enthusiasts from points all along the East Coast will descend upon the county to celebrate the fellowship inspired by cycling.

The event is being presented as a ride, not a competition.

Prizes will be awarded in 10 categories, including best of show. Spectators and participants will be afforded an opportunity to vote for their favorite automobile entries.

Then, after the prizes are awarded, the cruise will close with all the cars pulling out and driving down

“There’s a really wide range of cars,” Clair continued. “It’s really fun to see all the different cars and see how they’re displayed in so many different ways. It’s a good time to hang out, but also to find out what the Lions Club is all about.”

Clair said that the Lititz Lions Club has been staging its car cruise on a semi-regular basis over the last few decades. The local service organization also conducts a chili cook-off, a See Car Cruise pg 4

Risa met with the group of parents several times and eventually became the director of Aaron’s Acres, an organization that bears the name of Seldomridge’s son and provides socialization and recreation for children and young adults with special needs. That first summer camp in 1989 welcomed children ages 5 to 9. Aaron’s Acres now offers both summer camp and school year programs for those ages 5 to 21.

On Saturday, Aug. 26, starting at 1 p.m., the organization will hold Aaron’s Acres’ 25th anniversary celebration at Mickey’s Black Box, 101 Rock Lititz Blvd., Lititz. “It will See Aaron’s Acres pg 3

“The purpose is to draw in cyclists,” said Leslie Arnold, communications director for the Lancaster Bicycle Club. “It’s to offer a huge cycling event to the community. It’s an eclectic mix. Some are very serious cyclists. Some people do it because they are challenged by friends. Some make it part of their vacations. People want to see the covered bridges. That’s what draws people.”

From the seven start/finish points, participants are treated to rides of various length - 35, 50, 65 or 100 miles - through the Lancaster County countryside in the areas of Warwick T ownship, Ephrata, Manheim, Stevens and Hempfield. The 100-mile trek incorporates 14 of Lancaster County’s covered bridges into its journey.

All of the routes include rest stops, some of which feature mechanical support, parking and refreshments.

“Lancaster is not flat,” said Arnold. “There aren’t steep, steep climbs, but we have climbs that are going to push you. The shortest course has

City of Lancaster reschedules event

The City of Lancaster has announced Friday, Aug. 18, as the rescheduled date for Celebrate Lancaster. Originally scheduled for midJune, the event was postponed due to forecasted severe weather on the day of the event.

Celebrate Lancaster is the annual celebration of Lancaster city’s residents and cultures. The event features live performances, food vendors, local organizations and an array of unique vendors. The City of Lancaster will continue to partner with Crispus Attucks Community Center on programming for the rescheduled event.

Celebrate Lancaster is made possible by its presenting sponsor, Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, with additional support from Benchmark Construction.

Event details will be posted to https://visitlancaster city.com/celebrate as they become available.

the least amount of climbs, and the longest course has the most amount of climbs.”

The Covered Bridge Classic also serves as a fundraiser. From its participation, the Lancaster Bicycle Club is hoping to raise more than $10,000, some of which will be put back into the club, some of which will be funneled into community causes related to bicycling and some of which will go toward the maintenance of the covered bridges.

Since 1999, the Lancaster Bicycle Club has awarded $545,000 in grants mainly funded through the Covered Bridge Classic.

“It’s a huge way to give back to the community,” said Arnold. “The Lancaster Bike Club is all about advocating f or cycling safety. We have

social events throughout the year. We have different things for everybody, different types of rides for all levels of riders. Throughout the year, there’s always an effort to schedule a ride every weekend.”

In addition to its relaxed rides, the Lancaster Bicycle Club also organizes two other more formal rides - the Three Creek Century and the Chocolate Tour.

The Lancaster Bicycle Club was formed in 1973, and six years later it presented its

inaugural Covered Bridge Classic.

“Over the years, we’ve evolved,” said Arnold. “More people came in, and we became bigger and more complex. At one point, we had 600 members. It’s a pastime you can do, and there’s also more serious riders. The club has evolved to reflect the needs of the membership.”

be a celebration of the community,” said Risa. “We are where we are because of the support that we get from everyone in the community.”

The celebration will be divided into two parts, with a carnival-themed family fun event happening from 1 to 4 p.m. featuring inflatables, bounce houses, games, food trucks, face painting, and popcorn. “All (area) families are invited. It’s open to everyone,” said Risa.

For the evening event, doors open at 5:30 p.m., and the celebration for guests age 18 and older will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. The Mama Tried Band will play and a mentalist from Philadelphia will stroll through the gathering interacting with guests. Food will include heavy appetizers and beverages by Cracked Pepper Catering. Risa noted that silent auctions will be held during the afternoon and evening events, along with a Fund-a-Need opportunity.

“Two parents will speak, and there will be a brief presentation (in the evening),” said Risa, who added that attire will be dressy casual. Tickets, which are necessary to attend either event, may be purchased at www.aarons acres.org by Monday, Aug. 14.

Risa recalled identifying her first career choice at an early age. “When I was 9, I volunteered to help in the classroom for students with disabilities instead of going out to recess,” she stated.

“When I was 16, I worked at a (Young Men’s Hebrew Association (YMHA)) day camp for kids with disabilities in New York.” In that position, Risa recognized the possibilities a camp atmosphere could offer.

“I saw the power of focusing on therapy, communication, and socialization but in a fun setting,” she said.

After earning her master’s degree in social work, Risa worked in a hospital setting. At age 24, she contacted the camp where she had been previously employed and learned the organizaton was looking for a program director. She filled that position, but resigned later when her husband, Jack, a rabbi, began leading a synagogue in New Jersey. Not long after, she was rehired and commuted from her new home to the YMHA until her first child was born. When her family moved to Lancaster, she had her own therapy practice for children until after becoming the director for Aaron’s Acres.

The Lititz Lions Club Car Cruise is hoping to raise $5,000 for community service work.

At Calvary Church, blood is the gift of life

Blood is one of those rare gifts that’s just as much a blessing to give as it is to receive. Quite simply, it is one of the most important things one human being can give to another.

On Friday, Aug. 18, Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, will conduct one of its reccurring blood drives. Sponsored by the American Red Cross, the event will accept individual donations of blood from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the gymnasium located near the back of the church.

“We want to help others. We want to be a part of that,” said Renee Crowe, Calvary Church’s events coordinator. “By donating blood, you will save a life. It’ll take an hour. Every two seconds, someone needs blood. Since blood cannot be manufactured and because it has a limited shelf life, the supply must be regenerated by donors.”

“Giving blood is a simple way to do something so impactful,” said Nicole Roschella, a communications manager for the American Red Cross of Pennsylvania. “The need is constant. It always makes me feel good to go out to a blood drive. It makes you feel great to help your neighbor.”

Calvary Church conducts a blood drive every three months, and the goal for this

month’s drive is to collect 36 pints of blood. Since 2020, Calvary Church has helped the American Red Cross collect more than 420 units of blood; one unit represents the blood collected from a single donor.

Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are also welcomed.

“(Donors are) all kinds of people,” said Roschella. “It can be just about anyone, as long as you match the eligibility requirements. At blood drives like the one at Calvary, you’ll get a combination of church members or people from the general area. We also have people who stick to the 56-day schedule (the minimum number of recommended days between donations), and they’ll even travel.”

“In my personal life, I’ve seen when people are anemic and they receive blood,” said Crowe. “I was given blood through open heart surgery, and without it, I would’ve died.”

The American Red Cross hosts about 120 blood drives in Lancaster County every year. Between June of 2022 and June of 2023, the American Red Cross distributed more than 1,000 units of red blood cells, more than 240 units of platelets and more than 60 units of plasma to hospitals in Lancaster County.

“When you give blood, it’s used locally, and we need to

It typically takes about an hour to donate a pint of blood.

keep the hospital shelves stocked,” said Roschella. “It could be used for a number of reasons. It could be used for people with sickle cell disease, people with cancer, mothers having difficult childbirths. One out of seven people who go to a hospital needs a blood transfusion.”

About 29,000 units of red blood cells are used in the United States each day.

“We’re honored to serve the Red Cross here,” said Crowe. “Not only is it helping the community, but it’s also helping to fill our mission. We just want to open our doors to the community and show people we serve and that we love them.”

“Right now, we’re seeing a drop in blood donations, something we typically see in the summer months,” said Roschella. “It’s not a huge commitment (other than) making the time to do it. You

Come out to the Kids Cookie Break Fest

Come to the Kids Cookie Break Fest for family fun, food and entertainment. The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 26, at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Two identical sessions will be held, one from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and one from 2 to 5 p.m.

“You’ll see a variety of friends you might have heard on the Kids Cookie Break,” explained Stacey Gagne, vice president of operations for WJTL FM 90.3, referencing the kid-friendly radio program. “It’s like we’re bringing all of the fun of the Kids Cookie Break to a free event for families.”

Two outdoor stages will feature performances and programs by Phredd, Steven Courtney, First Capital Drumline, Jared Erb, Cissy and The Man, Marian & Friends Ventriloquist, Jesse Rothacker and Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary, This Way Up and Ryan & Friends.

“We will also have a bounce house, covered wagon rides, Spooky Nook Gymnastics,

barrel train rides, chalk art, interactive vendor tents and carnival games,” Gagne noted.

This is the 11th year for the Kids Cookie Break Fest. Each year, the event supports an organization in the community by encouraging participants to donate specific items with admission.

“This year, we are inviting everyone who attends to donate art supplies to the School District of Lancaster,” Gagne explained. “Specifically, we are asking for art paper, paintbrushes and Sharpies.”

People will have the opportunity to purchase a Chick-filA box lunch to enjoy on-site, with proceeds helping to offset the cost of the event.

“People are also welcome to bring their own picnic lunch if they want to,” Gagne remarked.

She noted that the fest relies on volunteers as well as sponsors to operate. Sponsors

of this year’s Kids Cookie Break Fest include Sight & Sound Theatres, STRAY Production Services, Weaver’s Garage, Upward Broadband, Align Life Ministries, Casey Jones’ Restaurant at Paradise Station, Spooky Nook Sports, Chick-fil-A, The Bull Guys, Blessings of Hope and Herr’s.

The Kids Cookie Break Fest not only provides an opportunity to showcase performers from the radio program but also offers a fun family day out, Gagne said.

“We want to provide an event that is free for families,” she stated. “It’s an opportunity to enjoy time together, have fun as a family and to connect with us at WJTL.”

To reserve tickets for the Kids Cookie Break Fest, visit www.thejunctioncenter.com/ events. Information on purchasing Chick-fil-A lunches is available on the order form or lunches may be purchased by calling 717-459-3701. Tickets for the lunch must be purchased by Friday, Aug. 11.
