firefighter Scott Yuill felt he needed to do something to make sure the 343 firefighters who died during rescue attempts continued to be remembered. As a result, Yuill and his firefighter colleagues hosted the first Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb, which was patterned off similar events held around the country. “It’s a good event to focus people’s attention on what actually happened. We promised to never forget,” Yuill said. “(The stair climb) makes (9/11) more real you’re doing what they were doing: climbing steps.” Now, as another anniversary of 9/11 approaches, the Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb committee has planned its ninth annual event. The climb will take place at the Lancaster Barnstormers’ stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, on Sunday, Sept. 8. Registration will open at 8 a.m., and the event will start at 9 a.m. A warm-up for participants will be led prior to the ceremony’s opening. A musician will perform the national anthem. The committee is working on securing the services of a bagpiper to play solemn music during the ceremony too. Prior to the beginning of the climb, a roll call of the 343 deceased firefighters will be held. Each participant will receive a badge containing the name, rank, and photo of one of the firefighters. A video will play on the stadium’s jumbo screen, and the badgeholders will be asked to stand when their person is identified. During the climb, moments of silence will be held at the times the towers fell. At the end of the climb, when a participant finishes ascending the equivalent of 110 flights of stairs - which firefighters attempted on 9/11 - they will read the name on their badge and ring a bell, symbolizing the completion of the deceased person’s climb.

“That really sank in with people,” Yuill said of the bell-ringing aspect, which was introduced at last year’s climb. “It personalized it, and they really liked it.” The stair climb will be held rain or shine. It rained during last year’s event, and attendance was down, but the event still raised $17,000 for the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation. “ We’re not money-driven. That’s not why we do the climb,” Yuill said. “Our goal is to remember the 343,” committee member Joyce Mokros added. Yuill praised the 2018 participants, noting that there was some scrambling to move the opening ceremony from the field to the concourse, but the folks involved were flexible. Mokros pointed out that it was all in a day’s work for first responders. “They fight fires rain or shine,” Mokros remarked. Participation in the stair climb is open to folks of all ages. Children must be accompanied by adults. There is a cost to participate. Folks may register in advance and be guaranteed to receive an event T-shirt by visit www.lancasterstairclimb.org. Online registration will close on Friday, Aug. 23. After that date, folks will have to register at the event. Credit cards will be accepted for online registration, but only cash and checks will be accepted for day-of registration. Spectators are encouraged to attend and will be admitted free of charge. In addition to Yuill and Mokros, the Lancaster Memorial Stair Climb committee includes Frank Mokros, Dawn MokrosRathgeb, Roger Howard Jr., Don Schoenberger, and Mark Cohen. hunting- and outdoor-related items. Vendors that specialize in outdoor sporting equipment, including a vendor that makes hunting films, will also have displays on-site. The shoot raises funds to help defray the general operating costs of Woodcrest Retreat and to subsidize fees for campers who need assistance to afford camp. “We need to raise $85,000 each year to cover our camp budget,” explained Woodcrest director Cliff Martin, who added that proceeds from the shoot will be added to funds raised by the annual auction and golf tournaments in hopes of reaching that goal. Woodcrest, which is located on a 110-acre wooded hillside in northeastern Lancaster County, provides camping experiences in a variety of settings, including day, resident, and adventure camps, along with a Conquerors special needs camp. More than 1,400 youngsters attended camp at Woodcrest this year. Those who wish to take part in the 3-D Archery Shoot are encouraged to register by Monday, Aug. 19, by calling 717-738-2233 or visiting www.WoodcrestRetreat.org/ Events/Benefit-3D-Archery-Shoot.

The Art Gallery at United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC), 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, is featuring Lancaster County photographer Travis Boyd during August. Boyd was inspired by his father, who would paint the pictures from photographs he had taken. Boyd’s work focuses on Lancaster County, the sky and animals in nature. He is selftaught and constantly exploring new techniques to improve his photography. Boyd focuses on capturing everyday life from weddings to school sports and landscapes to wildlife. A full range of his work is on display at United Zion. Some photographs showcase his travels, while others are recognizable local spots such as the Conowingo Dam and Middle Creek. Boyd was born in Gettysburg and graduated from Littlestown High School. He became enthusiastic about the art of photography at a young age despite being red-green color blind. He joined the U.S. Air Force as a chef and after being honorably discharged from the service began working for Carbon’s

According to Pursel, more than 500 people attended the 2018 event. She added that the event welcomes well-mannered dogs on non-retractable leashes no longer than six feet. Vaccination certifications should be brought along with the dog. Leo’s Helping Paws was founded by Kathy Styer and Beth Buchter, who set a specific goal when they created the organization: to provide grants to rescue groups. To be eligible for grants, rescue organizations must be 501(c)(3) nonprofits with no paid staff. In addition to helping rescues, Leo’s has a pet food and supply bank that accepts food, treats, blankets, towels, and anything else a rescue could use. Leo’s is named after a now-11-year-old corgi that was rescued from a local breeding facility at the age of 11 months. Pursel said she would love to see this year’s event raise more than $10,000 for Leo’s Helping Paws. Preregistration for the event is available at http://leoshelping paws.org through Sunday, Sept. 1. Participants may also register at the park on the day of the event. There is a cost to take part. Readers who would like more information about the event may email goldenpuppy2016@ yahoo.com.

More than 500 hours of volunteer time at the church went into the event, Gray said, plus countless hours spent gathering, laundering, and mending clothing and preparing food for the day. Attendees are encouraged but not required to bring donations of nonperishable food items or toiletries for the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Current needs at the food pantry include canned vegetables, jelly, saltines and other crackers, canned fruit, canned tuna and chicken, and Spam. Last year, five boxes of food were donated to the food pantry thanks to shoppers. The God’s Clothing Closet event will also have free Bibles and

devotional materials available for adults and children. A limited number of quilts handmade by Ruhl’s church members will also be available for new mothers, and free onsite child care will be provided. Once folks are finished shopping, they are welcome to relax and enjoy musical entertainment, light refreshments, and a game room in an area separate from the clothing setup. Donations of children’s clothing only will be accepted at the church from Monday, Aug. 19, to Friday, Aug. 23. Leftover items will be donated to various local ministries. Readers with questions about the event may call the Ruhl’s UMC office at 717-665-3400.

Pathways Institute Kicks Off Fall Term

Moms in Prayer International will soon kick off another season of praying for children and schools. In Lancaster County, many groups will meet weekly. Moms in Prayer is a worldwide group of praying mothers, grandmothers, aunts, and other women. In addition to a traditional/one-school Moms in Prayer group, there are also church-based, homeschool, preschool, special-needs, prodigal, military, college, career, language-based, grandmothers’ and working mothers’ groups, as well as a growing prison ministry. Founded in 1984, Moms in Prayer International has one goal: to impact children and schools for Christ by gathering mothers to pray. Mothers in more than 140 countries around the world meet regularly, spending an hour

praying through the four steps of prayer: praising God for who He is, silently confessing any sins, thanking God for what He has done, and interceding on behalf of children, teachers, and school staff members. Additionally, Moms in Prayer will hold Bless Our School Sunday on Sept. 15. On this date, churches around the world will pray for the students, teachers, and school staff members in their congregations. For more information about Moms in Prayer International, to find a group, or more information about Bless Our Schools Sunday, readers may visit www.momsinprayer.org. Individuals can locate a group through the Moms in Prayer website by selecting Get Involved, or they may contact Sue Forry at 4steps ofprayer@gmail.com.

GOTR Announces Fall Season Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon will launch its fall season on Monday, Sept. 9. Approximately 900 girls ages 8 to 14 on more than 66 teams will participate in the 10-week program. The girls, from Lancaster and Lebanon counties, will learn about self-esteem, positive body image, and setting and achieving goals through a curriculum that combines experiential games with physical activity to address the whole girl’s health, consisting of physical, emotional, mental, social and spiritual components. The Ephrata Performing Arts Center (EPAC) has announced open call auditions for its 2019 Fall Young Artist Cabaret, “We Got the Beat,” featuring songs from rock musicals. Auditions will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 20, from 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the lower level at EPAC’s Sharadin Bigler Theatre, 320 Cocalico St., Ephrata. Each performer is asked to prepare an audition piece that is either an up-tempo song or ballad in the style of rock standard no

more than 32 bars in length. It does not necessarily need to be from a Broadway show. No monologue is required for the audition. The song selection should best represent who the performer is and should highlight their vocal abilities. A piano accompanist and CD player will be provided, so auditioners should bring sheet music or a CD. Auditioners should also bring a list of any schedule conflicts with them on the day of the audition. Auditions are open to young

performers ages 10 to 18. Dancers from all styles are welcome to audition. Registration is preferred, but walk-ins will be welcome. To register, visit www.ephrata performingartscenter.com. Those auditioning will be seen on a first-come, first-served basis. “We Got the Beat” Young Artist Cabaret will take place on Friday, Sept. 20, and Saturday, Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m. For more details, contact Irving at kids4kids@ ephrataperformingartscenter.com.

Giant Direct Now Available At 100 Stores Giant Food Stores has announced that Giant Direct, Powered by Peapod, is now available at 100 Giant stores and Martin’s Food Markets, under the Martin’s Direct banner, across four states. Giant Direct is Giant Food Stores’ online grocery service that offers pickup and delivery. Giant Food Stores president Nicholas Bertram and store manager Tim Dinsmore celebrated the opening of the 100th store to offer Giant Direct with a ribboncutting ceremony on July 12 at the Giant store located at 255 S.

Spring Garden St., Carlisle. In celebration of this e-commerce achievement, Giant presented a $1,000 donation to Project SHARE, a Carlisle-based organization that provides groceries and other essentials to more than 1,000 local families in need each month. Giant introduced Giant Direct earlier this year to accelerate the company’s e-commerce strategy. In February, the company opened a 38,000-square-foot Giant Direct e-commerce hub in Lancaster that serves as a central shipping

location for online delivery orders in the region. The hub also permits customers to place orders on-site via electronic tablets allowing for pedestrian pickup as well as the traditional car curbside pickup. The e-commerce effort has continued over the past five months, as Giant has added Giant Direct to stores across its network. Giant Direct provides customers with a wide assortment of products with the same quality and service available from local Giant stores and Martin’s Food Markets, now combined with the technology of Peapod. Online customers can shop for thousands of items, including private label products, national products, fresh produce, meat and seafood, deli meats and cheeses, natural foods, gluten-free foods, organic foods, household items and even rotisserie chicken. By linking their Bonus Card, customers can earn Gas Extra Rewards on qualifying purchases and can redeem their digital coupons to save on groceries. All orders are hand-picked by

SPECIAL FINANCING

for up to

24 MONTHS

Friendship Community and the Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio will hold an open house on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 4:30 to 7 p.m. at its Lititz Gallery, located in the Shoppes at Bloomfield Village, 235 Bloomfield Drive, Lititz. The public is invited. The event will highlight the current exhibit of artwork, and light refreshments will be provided. The Lititz Gallery is the second location for Friendship Community to display pieces created by various Heart Artists. The Friendship Heart Gallery and Studio is a place for artists with developmental and intellectual disabilities to celebrate their personalities and talents through free expression and collaboration. More than 70 unique artists work with local professionals and volunteers to create and sell artistic masterpieces while developing a sense of purpose, value and joy. Artists attend day and evening classes in the downtown Lancaster studio and receive instructions in a variety of techniques and media platforms. The pieces of artwork are selected through a juried process before being matted, framed and hung on the gallery walls. Friendship Community is a faith-based organization that aims to cultivate capabilities of individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. It offers three day programs, a home-based services program, Lifesharing and 26 residential homes serving more than 200 individuals in the two counties. For more details about the open house, readers may contact Becky Link at 717-656-2466 or blink@friendshipcommunity.net.
