Marching Warriors have got that swing

Band is a season just like any other season.

It’s a process measured by progress - progress fueled by hard work, repetition and growth.

At this point, the Warwick High School marching band’s fall season is well underway. Following some spring and summer drills, the Warwick marching band began its preseason

workouts in earnest on July 31, all in preparation for its season opener at home during the evening hours of Friday, Aug. 25.

“It’s a lot of work,” said Warwick band director Matthew Tenaglia. “ We learn 75% of our show before school starts and then the other 25% on Saturdays after school starts. Typically, during band season, you want to get feedback. By the end of September, you have 100% of (the

material learned) and you spend the rest of the season cleaning it up.

We’re trying to get as many reps as we can.”

We are not hoarders; we are sentimental creatures. We are not collectors; we are protectors of memories.

For many, postcards hold great value. They can be seen as monetized sentimentality.

On Saturday, Aug. 19, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., the Lancaster County Postcard Club will conduct its annual expo and show at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Admission to the event is free.

“People collect multiple things for all different reasons,” said Gordon Smith, a member of the Lancaster County Postcard Club who’s organizing the expo. “It depends on what draws their interest. Some people collect postcards for the post marks from different post offices. Some people collect them for the stamps. The show is an opportunity for people to get together and talk about postcards and explore postcards.”

Postcards will be displayed on 45 tables - about 10 more than in 2022 - by 20 vendors or dealers, some from as far away as Maryland, New York, Delaware, Ohio,

regular-season football games this fall, home and away, as well as at seven band competitions. One of the anticipated highlights of the band’s season could come at the University of Maryland in October,

when it will strut its stuff at the Bands of America competition.

“ We just tell (the student members) that every performance is an opportunity to get better,” said Tenaglia. “Some of our members

play fall sports. They have schoolwork to do. Some have jobs. It’s a lot of time, but band is really fun.”

spending more than 20 hours a week together. It’s important to get along. We really don’t have issues.”

The Warwick marching band’s 7.5minute, 2023 field show, titled “It Don’t Mean a Thing,” features the songs “It Don’t Mean a Thing if It Ain’t Got That Swing,” “My Funny Valentine” and “Sing, Sing, Sing.” The Marching Warriors will pull it off with 88 total band members - 21 students on woodwinds, 35 students on brass, 16 on percussion and 15 in the color guard.

“We try to highlight each section,” said Tenaglia. “We try to move audiences and move kids. We try to teach kids to put their best effort forward and how to respond to criticism. We’re trying to expose kids to more stuff than just marching up and down the field. We’re trying to make them better one day at a time.”

Last year, Warwick captured a state championship in the Open Division of the Yankee Conference at the Cavalcade of Bands Competition. This year’s band is charged with the task of upholding a Warwick musical tradition.

“Warwick has such a strong band history,” said Tenaglia. “If you look at the bands of the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s, they were fantastic. Band is loved here. We’re really lucky to have support from the community and town. Inevitably, it’s the band director’s job to take what’s on the field and make it great. But we put kids first.”

“I’m happy with (the band program),” concluded Tenaglia. “I love where we’re at, but we’re going to push to make it better.”

Discussion forum plans sessions

The Exploring Growing Together Discussion Forum will hold sessions on Thursdays in September. The group will meet from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 103 on the lower level of Lititz United Methodist Church, 201 Market St.

On Sept. 7 and 14, attendees may discuss “Life as We Knew It” by Susan Beth Pfeffer. The story focuses on Miranda, a high school sophomore who takes shelter with her family when a meteor knocks the moon closer to Earth. Told in a year’s worth of journal entries, “Life as We Knew It” chronicles the human struggle to hold onto hope in an increasingly desperate and unfamiliar world.

Discussion will focus on “The Tattooist of Auschwitz” by Heather Morris on Sept. 21 and 28, led by Shanna Boley. The book follows Lale Sokolov, a Slovakian Jew forcibly transported to the concentration camps at Auschwitz-Birkenau. When his captors discover that he speaks several languages, Sokolov is put to work as a tattooist, tasked with permanently marking his fellow prisoners.

Attendees may bring a lunch to eat during the discussion. Masks are optional for attendees.

The forum discussion series aims to offer a safe learning environment in which to discuss and explore diverse topics and beliefs.

For more information, to give suggestions, or to obtain a series schedule, contact Linda at 717-6260745 or raven303@ptd.net. Brochures are located in the lobby kiosk close to the office with the small group information.

New Jersey, Virginia and Washington, D.C. More than 100,000 postcards depicting scenes, vacation spots and roadside places like diners, hotels and motels, as well as some celebrating holidays and special occasions, will be made available for purchase.

“I’ve never seen so many postcards in one place,” said Smith, a 53-year-old resident of Wrightsville. “Some people have their favorite dealers. Everyone comes looking for different stuff. Most of them are there to buy, but there are also people from the community coming to sell their families’ collections. But there are also people who are curious; they’re just taking it all in.”

Nearly 250 postcard collectors and aficionados are expected to attend the Lancaster County Postcard Expo. The expo is one of a handful of postcard shows conducted in Lancaster County at different

times each year.

“(A postcard is) a card that the postal service will mail without an envelope,” said Smith. “It used to be a way of communicating at the turn of the (20th) century. At that time, the mail went out three or four times a day. They didn’t have telephones. It was a short message and a way to keep in touch. It was just random conversation that you and I now have in person or over the phone.”

Smith said he possesses postcards that were postmarked as far back as the 1870s.

“Some people make their own postcards,” said Smith. “I personally like the real photo postcards. It’s a picture of what happened there and then. It gives you a glimpse of what life was like at that specific moment.”

The Lancaster County Postcard Club recently celebrated the 33rd anniversary of its founding. A few

Landis Valley

“George and Henry Landis envisioned Landis Valley being a Williamsburg in central Pennsylvania,” said Timothy Essig, a museum educator at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. “They envisioned this living history museum of Pennsylvania Dutch in southcentral Pennsylvania. Living history is a re-enactment of a previous time period. When you come to Landis Valley and you see these different living history demonstrations, you see a living portrait of life from 200 years ago.”

Located in Manheim Township, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum consists of 40 acres of general Pennsylvania Dutch living history surrounded by 60 acres of fields and farmland. Nearly 60 buildings have been erected on the property, some of which are historically interpreted constructions that provide the village with its 18th- and 19th-century atmosphere and others of which serve supportive purposes.

Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is a state-operated facility that is also supported by the Landis Valley Associates.

“Our goal continues to be to share the story of this unique culture in American history,” said Essig. “When you come to Landis Valley, you’re going to learn about agriculture, different trades and the architecture of the overall German contribution to the American culture. We do tell a big story.”

The peoples who would later come to be known as Pennsylvania Dutch immigrated to the United States and the area in three

years after its founding, the club sponsored its inaugural Lancaster County Postcard Expo.

“Postcards are still being made,” said Smith. “You can find them at tourist areas. But they’re not being

used as much as they used to be, probably because people now use phones or the internet.”

distinct waves, from the 1680s to the 1840s. Brothers and Landis Valley founders Henry and George Landis collected more than 200,000 objects related to these immigrants’ culture and stored them in buildings that, in 1925, became the foundation upon which Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum was built.

When the state became involved with its operation in the mid-1950s, Landis Valley was transformed into the living history village it is today.

“Henry and George Landis were two men focused on their culture,” said Essig. “They weren’t millionaires, but they spent their entire lives collecting artifacts of that culture.”

Today, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum hosts nearly 70,000 visitors each year for school field trips, family vacation visits, bus trips from destinations mainly east of the Mississippi River, special events and facility

rentals. The visitors come mostly from southeast and southcentral Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware and New Jersey and from as far away as the rest of the 50 states and even other countries.

The mission of Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is supported by hundreds of volunteers.

“History is not ‘was’; history ‘ is,’” said Essig. “You experience history when you visit Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum. History comes to life.”
