Raising Funds And Raising Awareness

CLOTHING GIVEAWAY

When Mark Schantzer’s son, Desmond, known as “Des,” died by suicide in 2011, Mark and his family, including wife Debbie and daughter Danielle, were blindsided. “We didn’t see or know any signs,” shared Mark. “We didn’t have money for a funeral. You don’t think about that cost.” In response, the family founded the nonprofit DES Foundation and coordinates the annual Walk for D.E.S., which raises funds to promote suicide prevention and awareness and to aid families who have lost loved ones to suicide. Funds may help pay for counseling in addition to funeral costs. “It depends on the need,” said Mark.

29 Green Acre Road, Lititz, will host a free clothing giveaway on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 7 to 11 a.m. Gently used clothing will be available for men, women and children. Call 717-626-2560 or visit www.hosannalititz.org. VENDORS SOUGHT

John (left) and Sandy Halvorsen displayed the flag they carried when they visited St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manheim Township in July. The couple stopped for dinner at the church as John worked to complete his prayer walk across America. The Halvorsens left Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 31, 2018, and arrived in Manhattan on July 31.

John Halvorsen, a pastor from Duluth, Minn., recent completed Prayer Walk America, which took him from Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, Calif., to Manhattan, N.Y., in 38 weeks. “We started Oct. 31, 2018,” said John, who averaged 16 miles a day. He arrived in Times Square on July 31. Along the way, he and his wife, Sandy, who followed along on John’s walk in a motorhome, stopped in Lancaster for dinner at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manheim Township. This walk, the most recent of several John has completed, was titled “Prayer Walk America - An Appeal to Heaven.” “This is … an appeal to people to start praying,” said John between bites as he enjoyed his potluck dinner at the church. “The response has been so positive.” See Prayer Walk pg 5

Elliott Is Third Recipient Of GOTR Ellen Award By Ann Mead Ash

Not long after Danielle Elliott received the Shining Light Ellen Coach Award from Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster at the Inn at Leola Village on May 29, she headed for the Pocono Mountains, where she works at a summer camp for children. In the fall, she will return to her job as a learning support teacher at Burrowes Elementary School in the School District of Lancaster. For Elliott, who just signed up to volunteer for her sixth season with GOTR, working with children fulfills an important purpose. “Emotional and behavioral (needs) are what I am drawn to,” said Elliott, who noted that she was abandoned by a parent as a child. “When I was little … my teachers were there for me,” she said. “That’s what drew me to teaching and working with See Ellen Award pg 4

This year’s Walk for D.E.S. will include a 5K walk and run with color at Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Neffsville, on Saturday, Sept. 14. Registration will open at 9:30 a.m. At 10:45 a.m., a brief service will be held. “We read a poem and play a song or two … at a tree we planted there in the … park,” said Mark. The walk will begin at 11 a.m. along a flat route that travels into a wooded area. “It intertwines like a figure eight. It’s an easy walk,” said Mark, who added that the run with color will occur at the beginning. According to Mark, the first two walks helped provide funding for the Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition, which has created awareness cards that list warning signs of a potential suicide on one side and give prevention instructions on the other side. “Too many people see the warning signs and don’t know what to do,” said Mark. “(A person will say), ‘You aren’t going to do anything stupid, are you?’ The friend says, ‘No, I’m good,’ and then they are reading (an obituary) tomorrow.” Mark encourages everyone to know what to watch for. “Learn the signs and what to do if you see them,” he said. “If you can’t do anything, stick around until you get someone who can help.” To spread the word about the help the organization offers to families of those who die by suicide, the DES Foundation created a brochure. Mark has

distributed the brochures to local coroners, police departments, and funeral homes. Other ways that the organization promotes its message include a poster on a number of Red Rose Transit buses and a 60-second video posted in the video gallery under the Media tab at www.walkfordes.org. “The Pennsylvania Suicide Coalition runs a competition among all the schools for the best video spot for suicide awareness and prevention,” said Mark. “We posted the winner on our website.” Some past walks have raised more than $17,000 for the foundation to distribute. Mark said he would like to see the 2019 event raise $25,000. “The more we raise, the more I can give toward a funeral, counseling, a utility bill, or whatever (families) need,” Mark said. Raising funds, however, is not the most important factor in the Walk for D.E.S., according to Mark. “We bring together 300 to 400 survivors in a space where it’s expected they will talk with others about what happened to them,” said Mark, who added that many families attend the walk together. “There will be people hugging and crying,” said Mark. “It helps everyone get to tomorrow.” Individuals who wish to participate in the walk may register at the organization’s website. There is a registration fee to take part. The fee for students ages 6 to 18 will be discounted, and children age 5 and under may participate for free.

PanCAN Benefit Programs Set Lancaster author Sherry V. Ostroff will support her friend Randi Jacobs’ fundraising efforts for pancreatic cancer research by donating 10 percent of the purchase price on all sales of her books during September to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCAN). “The Lucky One” and “Caledonia” are available in paperback and e-book formats at Amazon.com. Jacobs, a 10-year pancreatic cancer survivor from Lancaster, will also participate in the PanCAN’s PurpleStride Philadelphia walk in November to end pancreatic cancer. Friends and family members will join Ann’s Dream Team to support Jacobs and honor the memories of her mother and grandmother and celebrate her 10-year survival. Jacobs was diagnosed with pre-pancreatic cancer in 2009 through a clinical study at Penn Medicine focused on individuals who lost two immediate relatives to pancreatic cancer. Jacobs lost her mother in 2006 and her grandmother in 1985. Jacobs and her two sisters each received an MRI and endoscopic ultrasound to determine if they

Labor Day Auction To Feature Tools And Much More As Hospice & Community Care (HCC) donor relations manager Coco Minardi reviewed the items pulled for a photo to advertise the 35th annual Labor Day Auction set for Saturday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, she laughed. “An autographed football, a lifesize NASCAR poster, a quilt, and a mailbox: That’s the randomness of the auction right there.” Indeed, at first glance it might seem like the epic two-day sale is full of a jumble of items every year, but it is all very deliberate. The things that have been donated to the auction are grouped by type, such as plants, quilts, sports memorabilia, used cars, and artwork. This year, the event will feature a tool auction for the first time. “ We work with the Amish community, and they do all of our food, which brought in $80,000 last year, but not many Amish people attend the auction,” Minardi explained. In an effort to appeal to more Amish folks, the auction committee asked for advice, and “add tools” was the resounding response. “We called local construction companies, and hospice families have been cleaning out their sheds,” Minardi said. Decommissioned commercialgrade tools and equipment, as well as household tools, have been donated for the auction, and they will be sold to the highest bidders on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in the second half of the plant building. “We’re hoping we strike a chord with people who are do-it-yourselfers or Amish,” Minardi remarked. The Labor Day Auction started in Lampeter, but four years ago, the event moved to the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, where it has flourished. The site offers ample free parking, and there is team parking at the venue as well. Golf

carts will be available to shuttle people to and from their cars as needed. Minardi reported that the first auction more than three decades ago raised $1,300, and the advertising material was not even the size of a half-sheet of letter paper. Last year’s event brought in $760,000. “We can’t fit all (of the details) on anything smaller than eight pages,” she marveled. The fairgrounds will open at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 so visitors may register for bidder numbers, purchase their allyou-can-eat food passes, and preview the items. The food tents will open on Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. and will feature omelets and sticky buns for breakfast and pork barbecue for lunch. Breakfast logs - those culinary delights of bacon or sausage, scrambled eggs, and cheese baked in a buttery soft pretzel crust - will be available when the food tents open at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 2. Minardi noted that an HCC volunteer is known to bring a cooler to the sale so she can buy two dozen breakfast logs to take home, freeze, and enjoy later. Sept. 2 will also feature barbecued chicken and ribs, as well as doughnuts made on-site. The food offerings on both days will include fried shrimp, a salad bar, fresh fruit, smoothies, chocolate milk, and more. Minardi and the auction committee are still accepting donations for the auction. They are especially looking for used cars and quilts. A number of unique items have already been donated. Of special note are Ty Cobb baseball cards from 1909 and 1911. The collectors’ items will be sold on Sept. 2 at noon in the sports building. An Amish buggy will be up for bids, as well as sheds, a gazebo, and vacation stays for large groups of people. Recommendations of delivery services for the structures will be provided. For folks who would like to contribute to HCC without taking things home, the Day of Care Auction, which is sponsored by Engle Printing & Publishing Co.,

August Breakfast Features Hospice & Community Care staff members (from left) Devon Fiore, special events coordinator; Coco Minardi, donor relations manager; and Allie Bucher, communications manager, display a tiny sample of the items that will be sold at the 35th annual Labor Day Auction in Quarryville on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2. Inc., will be held at noon both days. Television personalities Corinne Lillis and Anne Shannon will host the auctions, during which attendees may virtually purchase days of care for hospice clients. The average daily cost of providing hospice care for one person is $187, Minardi said. The proceeds from the Labor Day Auction will go directly to HCC’s programs. The nonprofit organization has operations in Lancaster and York counties and provides palliative care, bereavement help, chaplain and auxiliary services, individual and group counseling, physical and online resource libraries, and more. In 2018, HCC served more than 15,000 families. Minardi noted that HCC serves more than 60 percent of the people who die in Lancaster County and a quarter of the deceased in York County. HCC also offers services for people who have experienced

tragic loss, including the death of pets. To donate items for the auction, readers may contact special events coordinator Devon Fiore at 717-391-2434 or dfiore@ hospicecommunity.org. For more information about the event, folks may visit www.LaborDay Auction.org.

children. I never want (my students) to feel as alone as I did,” she said. “I want them to feel secure and have one person they know they can always turn to.” Elliott received her teaching certification from Millersville University, and she is currently attending graduate classes at the school. However, when one of her students was taken to the hospital emergency room, Elliott left a class at Millersville to be with her. W hen she arrived, medical personnel refused to let her see the patient, but the patient’s mother told them to treat her like family, and Elliott stayed with the student until the student was released. That type of dedication inspired every third- through fifth-grade girl on her GOTR team to nominate her for the Ellen Award. Elliott was also nominated by other teachers and parents of her GOTR team members. “One of the parents expressed how I would go out of my way (to help the girls),” said Elliott. “A lot of the girls told me they had written how important it is that I talk about self-image, and that helps them to feel more confident in themselves.” GOTR team members are not the only ones who benefit from Elliott’s coaching. “I get to see my students in a whole different light, and it helps me step back and understand who they are and how I can benefit them inside and outside of the classroom,” said Elliott. “It helps me with my self-confidence issues and body image issues (because) helping them reminds me to stay positive.” The GOTR 20-lesson curriculum is designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of selfrespect and healthy living. “It’s super organized,” said Elliott,

who added that the flexibility of the program is a real plus. “(GOTR) knows my group will respond to lessons differently than those at (other schools),” she said. “These girls think teachers are invincible and have these perfect worlds, (but the girls I coach) get to see that I am also human.” Pointing to a lesson about the influences in social media, Elliott noted that she has been able to show her team members the hidden influences so that the girls know to be aware of what could negatively influence them. Each recipient of the Ellen Award receives a special bracelet and $500 to pay it forward to a charity of her choice. Elliott has chosen to give the funds to Aevidum, an organization that works to create positive mental health environments in schools and communities across the nation. She would like to see the principles of Aevidum instilled in students in the School District of Lancaster, especially in elementary schools. “I am big on suicide awareness, and I don’t think the emotional needs of younger children are really being met,” she said. “I want my girls to have that system so that they’re not alone.” The Ellen Award, which was first given in 2017, is named for Ellen McCabe, the stepmother of GOTR Lancaster program director Jennifer West. GOTR coaches can be nominated by fellow coaches, principals, staff members, colleagues, spouses, family members, friends, parents, and the girls who make up the GOTR teams. Readers who wish to learn more about GOTR Lancaster may visit www.gotrlancaster.org. Registration for the fall 2019 program began in early August.

John said that in 1998, God gave him a vision of walking across America, along with a verse. “Genesis 13:17 came to me,” said John. “‘Get up and walk the length and the breadth of the land.’” John began to ask God what the cause would be for the action. “I felt the Lord was saying, ‘There are tumultuous times coming to America, and I am going to grant you unusual favor with the press.’” On Sept. 21, 1998, John began walking from the Canadian border in Minnesota, and he ended the walk when he arrived in Gulfport, Miss., on Jan. 4, 1999. His journey was chronicled by a country music radio station that asked him to call in weekly with updates. Billy Graham’s organization interviewed John four times, and he was also interviewed by Bill Bright. John said God’s message for listeners was that tumultuous times were coming, and it was important to pray. “This was before 9/11,” noted John. In April of 1999, John and Sandy traveled to the West Coast to begin his first cross-country walk. “We started in a fishing village in Oregon,” recalled John, who said that the walk ended in Rehoboth Beach, Del., in November of 1999. “Again, we had favor

with the press,” said John. In 2008, John felt the Lord calling him to walk from Portugal to China. He began in Cabo da Roca, Portugal, the westernmost point of continental Europe, and walked 6,020 miles to an area near China, while praying blessings on the countries he passed through. During the recent trip, John carried a special flag bearing the image of a pine tree and the words “An Appeal to Heaven.” The flag is a replica of one that George Washington used during the Revolutionary War. “They knew at the time that unless an appeal to heaven was made, the Revolutionary War would not be won,” said Sandy. “John felt he should carry this flag, as we are making an appeal to heaven for awakening for this nation. We need the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We need the Lord,” she said. Readers who wish to learn more about the Halvorsens’ mission may visit www.prayer walkamerica.com.

John said that Sandy, who generally travels 2 to 3 miles ahead of him while he is walking, has asked people along the route how the couple can pray for them. “People start crying, pouring out their hearts, asking for prayer,” said John, who recalled several talks with farmers in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. “We walked through fields that were muddy, and they couldn’t get the tractors in to plant or the seed was rotting,” he said, adding that one of the farmers told him, “I think God is trying to get our attention.” John received his first call to embark on a prayer walk while he and Sandy were serving as missionaries in Ireland working with Harvest Network International. “I suddenly received a burden for the United States,” said John, who was in Ireland with Sandy from 1991 to 1998. “After a year of trying to discern what the Lord was saying, we turned the reins over to another couple and moved back to the United States.” Back in Minnesota, John began doing pastoral work. “I would go to the Mall of America to pray daily, and I would walk around the mall, so people called me the pastor of the Mall of America.”

Benefit Dinner from pg 1 On June 22, Luther Acres residents gathered for a fun, outdoor pop-up dinner to celebrate the start of summer and life at Luther Acres. The first Fête en Blanc Benefit - or Festival in White - at Luther Acres, a Luthercare community in Lititz, was completely planned and organized by residents and spread by word of mouth through the campus. It was modeled after a concept that began in Paris in 1988, in which people gather in a public space and set up a temporary, chic dining area. Guests arrived dressed in white. Typically, diners bring their own food and beverages, decorations, and tables and chairs. In this case, the Luther Acres maintenance team

delivered the tables and chairs behind a cluster of campus cottages, and the residents provided everything else. As part of the event, attendees were encouraged to make a donation to support benevolent care at Luther Acres. More than 50 donors gave more than $24,000 to support their community. The event went so well that residents are already planning to host it again next year. Luther Acres is located at 600 E. Main St., Lititz. Auditions Set For “The Nutcracker”

Local Group Awards Scholarship The Elizabeth Hughes Society has awarded its Women for Women Scholarship to Valerie Belmont. Belmont has been a resident of Elizabethtown for 22 years. She and her husband have five children, and the family has participated in many Elizabethtown community activities. Belmont has volunteered for Girls Confidence Conference, the Arm of Hope fundraiser, and Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS), and she has assisted in settling refugees from the Congo and Kenya in Elizabethtown and has lectured on health care to visiting Chinese students. Belmont is currently employed as a nurse at UPMC Pinnacle in Lititz. She is pursuing a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) at Cedarville University School of Nursing in the Family Nurse Practitioner program in Cedarville, Ohio. The Women for Women Scholarship was established in memory of late Elizabeth Hughes member Esther Winters. The society learned that Winters had returned to school as an adult to become a pharmacist, and the group established a Women for Women Scholarship to provide assistance or

encouragement for eligible women to return to school to pursue a degree, to obtain or renew a license, or to become certified in an occupation. The Elizabeth Hughes Society also awards an annual scholarship to a graduating senior at Elizabethtown Area High School. This year, five women completed the application process for the Women for Women Scholarship. According to scholarship committee chairperson Marilyn Muston, most of the applicants were married with children. Their academic goals included obtaining a Master of Business Administration and pursuing Certified Peer Specialist training and spiritual direction training. Applicants also were furthering their studies in nursing and social work. A committee reviewed the applications, which included letters of recommendation and an essay by the applicant. Selecting the recipient were committee members Ann Fetter, Carol Hunter, Donna Young, Sandi Bush, and Amy Carroll, the president of Elizabeth HughesSociety. The society awards the scholarship every year. Information about next year’s scholarship will be available in April 2020.
