Restart Banquet To Feature Josh McDowell

Commemorating And Raising Awareness
Jaime Santiago, founder and executive director of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), an organization that strives to help men who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions, sees the goals of the RTCM in space mission terms. “Restart is the rocket booster that helps (students) get into the orbit of sobriety and recovery,” said Santiago. Once students are orbiting among the stars, Santiago said, they are sustained by connecting to a local church where they can continue to grow spiritually. “We help them blast off, but they have to utilize the resources in the community,” said Santiago. So, for RTCM’s sixth annual fall banquet, it is only fitting that the organization is featuring Josh McDowell, author of “Evidence That Demands a Verdict,” along with about 150 other books, and See RTCM pg 2
Pennsylvania Riding Club To Hold Event BY ANN MEAD ASH
“When this happened to Linda, it really hit home … being parents and realizing the danger our teenagers are in,” said Jennifer King. She and her husband, Wayne, both members of the Pennsylvania Riding Club, are working with American Bikers on a Mission to organize the Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and
Abduction Awareness Ride. Stoltzfoos was kidnapped and murdered in 2020. Wayne, who was born into the Plain community, is friends with Sam Blank, a spokesman for the Stoltzfoos family. “I wanted to make sure this was done right,” said Wayne. “A focus of our club is bridging the gap between the biker community and the (Plain) commu-
nity.” With that goal in mind, Wayne and other members of the club plan to hold the ride on Saturday, Sept. 11. Riders will meet at Ephrata Community Church (ECC), 70 Clay School Road, Ephrata, from 10 to 11:45 a.m. for registration. The ride will leave at noon and follow a route that will take Route 322 east to Farmersville Road to Shirk Road to Route 23 through
New Holland to Route 897. The ride will end at Weaverland Anabaptist Faith Community, 210 Weaverland Valley Road, East Earl. A short ceremony including the Pledge of Allegiance, a prayer, announcements, and a safety briefing will be held at ECC. At Weaverland, Andrea McHenry, a representative of FREE, a Berks County-based anti-human

CAP Cadets Receive Promotions, Awards During its first in-person meeting in 16 months, held on July 12, the Jesse Jones Composite Squadron 304 of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) promoted seven cadets and handed out awards. The squadron meets each Monday at 7 p.m. in the Venture Jets Hangar at Lancaster Airport near the intersection of Lititz Pike and Millport Road. Squadron commander Maj. Jerome E. “Pepper” Broad promoted seven cadets and awarded program ribbons to them. Broad also recognized the squadron’s cadet commander, Cadet First Lt. Jurnee M. Acosta, for completing an important step in her work toward earning the Amelia Earhart Award and promotion to captain. Aaron Keohane and Slater
Shannon were each promoted to cadet airman first class and presented with the Hap Arnold Achievement Ribbon, to be worn on their dress blue uniform. This was their second promotion. Five cadets, who are relatively new to the program, received the Curry Achievement Ribbon and their first promotion, to cadet airman. They are Jereco Acosta, Dean Garber, Gretchen Garber, Lucas Horst and Dhruvan Sundaram. CAP cadets are active in the emergency services and aerospace education missions assigned to them by the U.S. Air Force. Additionally, they participate in an annual weeklong encampment on a military installation, receive orientation

simply lined up with the goals of his nearly 60 years of ministry. “Restart’s mission is where my heart is with young people,” said McDowell, who noted that many of the problems of life begin during youth. “If I am going to have a lasting impact, I have to start with young people,” he said, adding that building confidence and positive relationships can prepare young people to deal with issues they may face later. McDowell noted that developing an honest self-image is especially important. “How you see yourself will determine most relationships,” he explained. “If you cannot accept yourself as you are with your blemishes and your positive points, you cannot trust somebody else to accept you. As a result, you don’t establish close relationships.” Conversely, McDowell added,
if we can see ourselves as God sees us, we can trust others to as well. Recalling his passion to write “Evidence That Demands a Verdict,” considered a highly influential Christian book, McDowell, shared that he was inspired by his student peers. “When I went off to college, I was bitter, hurt, mad, ticked off,” said McDowell, who noticed a group of students who seemed to have a genuine love and care for those around them. “That got my attention,” said McDowell, who asked the students what their secret was. A young woman told him, “Jesus Christ.” McDowell did not want to hear about Jesus. “They challenged me until they ticked me off,” he said. “I set out to write ‘Evidence That Demands a Verdict’ against Christianity, but I ended up

After more than a year of COVID restrictions, Luther Acres residents welcomed the return of many pre-pandemic activities and a visit from celebrity chef and Food Network star Jet Tila on June 23. Tila visited the campus to conduct a hands-on “Teaching Kitchen” cooking demonstration at 11 a.m. in the campus Community Room. He prepared a Hawaiian chicken sandwich with fresh apple slaw alongside several residents as sous chefs, while roughly 50 residents and team members gathered to watch the live demonstration. Afterward, he posed for photos with residents and staff, chatted and autographed cookbooks attendees had brought to the event. The sandwich was a featured menu item later that evening at the annual Luther Acres Resident Summer Picnic. The picnic, with a Summer Fair and Carnival theme,

refuge home in the Reading area. With the ride being held on the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Wayne noted that riders from Never Forget 9/11 will leave Manheim and join the ride when it leaves ECC. In addition, the Green Castle American Legion Riders Color Guard will be present. There is no charge to take part, but Jennifer requested that those who plan to participate search for “Linda Stoltzfoos Commemorative and Abduction Awareness Ride” on Facebook and indicate their intent to attend. A similar
ride last year attracted more than 700 riders. “There were probably 3,000 people (gathered at ECC before we left),” noted Wayne. Organizers anticipate having coffee and possibly doughnuts at ECC prior to the ride. They are hoping to provide volunteer traffic control and to have members of the Bird-in-Hand Fire Company that organized early searches for Stoltzfoos present. Opportunities to donate to those organizations will be presented. Following the ride, chicken meals and ice cream will be available for purchase at Weaverland.

Martin Earns All-America Honor Colby Martin, a student-athlete at Shenandoah University (SU), Winchester, Va., has been named as a first team All-America selection by D3baseball.com in selections announced recently. Martin, a second baseman, led SU to a 31-11 season this year with a .482 batting average along with eight home runs, seven triples, 55 RBIs, and 25 stolen bases. The Lititz native ranked fourth in the nation in batting average and third in hits. He hit safely in 38 of 42 games this season, had 28 multiple-hit games, and ended the year on a 16-game hitting streak. He also reached base safely in the Hornets’ final 24 contests. Martin’s seven triples is a new school record, and he led the league in batting average, hits, triples, total bases, stolen bases, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. Martin was previously named as the Player of the Year in the league by the ODAC and in the South Region by both D3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association. Martin is one of three players from the ODAC to earn All-America honors. Martin was also one of four SU baseball players named an All-South Region selection. Martin headlines this quartet by earning South Region Player of the Year honors.
