CHILDREN’S PROGRAM

Sarah Beatty (center photo), drum major of the Warwick High School marching band, worked with more than 60 fellow band members to learn the fall drill, called “Mother Earth,” during band camp, which was held at the school from Aug. 6 through 9 and 13 through 17. By Ann Mead Ash

Stewardship of the Earth is an ageold concept, and the idea that it is necessary to treat the planet responsibly was foremost in the mind of Warwick High School (WHS) junior and drum major Sarah Beatty as she worked with

more than 60 fellow marching band members to prepare the school’s fall drill, titled “Mother Earth.” “I hope the message shows people (in our audiences) that they need to take care of our planet,” said Beatty, as the band drilled behind her on the practice field. “We won’t be here forever if we don’t

is accepting registrations for its classes, which will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 18, for John Beck and Lititz elementary students and Thursday, Sept. 20, for John R. Bonfield and Kissel Hill students. All third- and fourth-graders in the Warwick School District may register for the classes. WRT students meet to study the Bible at local churches over their lunch time for one hour per week. The thirdgraders study the Old Testament and the fourth graders study the New Testament. Pennsylvania state law allows this opportunity for religious education, which is funded by local churches, businesses, and citizens. To register a child, readers may visit www.warwickreleasedtime.org or contact the student’s elementary school for a form.

Cyclists, walkers, and motorcycle enthusiasts are all invited to take part in the COBYS Bike and Hike fundraiser to be held at Lititz Church of the Brethren on Sept. 9. The event will help support the organization’s foster care and family service programs.

CPRS Physical Therapy To Open New Office In Lititz CPRS Physical Therapy will open a new physical therapy office on Monday, Sept. 10, at 1170 Erbs Quarry Road, Suite 1, Lititz, located in the Shoppes at Brighton Village. The location will be the business’s own independent office. The new location is now the only location in Lititz where CPRS will be providing care; CPRS is no longer providing care at the Highlands Drive location with which it was previously associated. CPRS is a leading provider of outpatient physical therapy and athletic training services throughout central Pennsylvania. The company is 100 percent employee owned, which means

that the therapists, athletic trainers, and clerical and billing professionals are the owners of the business. CPRS representatives note that the company is known for expert clinical care and superb customer service, as well as for providing care in an exceptional atmosphere. CPRS professionals strive to create an environment that allows patients to have a unique physical therapy experience where they are the individual focus and can receive care in a welcoming and comfortable environment. When Amber Pavalko of Stevens signed on back in February to organize unite@night, an event that raises funds for CSF (Chiari and Syringomyelia Foundation), she had no idea what her future held. Pavalko has been fighting Chiari malformation, a syndrome that is associated with a variety of other physical problems, and Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) and syringomyelia since 2013. “I saw that there wasn’t (a fundraising event for CSF) here, so I wanted to do that,” said Pavalko. “That was before I needed four surgeries.” Pavalko has emerged from those surgeries feeling better than she had in years, allowing her more energy to plan the unite@night Lancaster CSF Walk for 2018, set for Friday, Sept. 21, at the See CSF Fundraiser pg 2

Kiwanis Pavilion at the Manheim Township Community Park, 209 Petersburg Road, Lancaster. Activities will begin at 6 p.m., and the walk will begin at 7:30 p.m. Pavalko has endeavored to keep this year’s event simple. The event will feature a walk and prizes and giveaways including gift cards and gift baskets. Food that will be available for purchase will include hot dogs, soft pretzels, and beverages. CSF is an organization founded to advance knowledge of Chiari, syringomyelia, and other related disorders. Chiari is generally a congenital condition in which the size of the back of the skull crowds neurological tissues. In this condition, the cerebellum can interfere with the flow of cerebrospinal fluid to flow into the spinal canal. Syringomyelia occurs when a syrinx, caused by a buildup of spinal fluid, forms in the spinal cord. This condition can stretch and damage nerve fibers. EDS is a connective tissue disorder caused by genetic changes in the tissues that stabilize and support joints and organs. The unite@night events are designed to provide education about Chiari and related syndromes while raising funds for research to aid those who are afflicted. Pavalko hopes to raise $5,000 with this year’s event. Pavalko has had 11 neurosurgeries, along with a number of other procedures and hospitalizations, since first being diagnosed. She said that she is now feeling the best she has been since she began experiencing symptoms after giving birth to her daughter, Addie, in 2013. “I have

two shunts now,” said Pavalko, who added that the unusual system was installed by Dr. Kenneth Liu, a vascular neurosurgeon now based at Hershey. The shunt system has greatly reduced the intracranial hypertension caused by having too much spinal fluid. Before Liu operated, Pavalko was experiencing a number of symptoms, including a continual headache from the pressure of the fluid. “My leg was still dragging, and my hand was shaking before I had those four surgeries,” explained Pavalko. “I couldn’t see well enough to not crash into a wall, (but) now I can see again, and I can drive short distances.” Pavalko said that she is thankful for doctors like Liu who are willing to use creativity and try new technologies to treat conditions such as Chiari, EDS, and related problems. “I wouldn’t be living my life with my daughter right now if he didn’t take chances on people like me who are atypical,” she said. “That’s what I am grateful for. That’s what gives me hope.” Pavalko is a trained drug rehabilitation counselor, but she has not worked in her chosen field for some time. A year ago, she became involved in launching Celebrate Recovery, a cooperative effort between several New Holland churches and organizations. More information about CSF may be found at http://www.csfinfo.org. Readers who want to register for the walk may visit https://www.classy.org/event/2018 -lancaster-pa-chiari-syringomyelia-and -ehlers-danlos-syndrome-unite-night -walk/e174528.

the All-Star Orchestra on the Public Broadcasting System, at the Brahms Festival, and with the Fairbanks Symphony in Alaska. He is soloist each season with the Philadelphia Orchestra. As a teacher, Kim is founder and artistic director of the annual David Kim Orchestral Institute of Cairn University of Philadelphia. He also serves as professor of violin studies at Cairn. Kim lives near Philadelphia. Readers may learn more about him at www.davidkimviolin.com. About a year ago, Leaman was discussing the future of the sing-along with supporter JM Herr. “As we move forward, we will (need a legacy),” explained Leaman. “(Herr) is friends with David Kim,” said Leaman. Herr offered to ask Kim to perform a benefit concert for the singalong. “Kim said he would love to do it,” said Leaman. Among the selections Kim will perform at the Sept. 18 concert will be “Soli Deo Gloria” and Massenet’s “Meditation” from “Thais,” which is Kim’s signature piece. His selections will also include “When I Survey the Wondrous Cross,” “Banjo and Fiddle,” and “Carmen Fantasy.” Tickets to Kim’s concert are available at http://messiahsingalong.com, and purchasers may select seats from those available. Seats in the balcony will be sold at a discount, and discounts will be offered for senior citizens, military personnel, and students. Any tickets remaining on the day of the concert will be available at the door.

When violinist David Kim performs at the Calvin and Janet High Fine Art Center at Lancaster Mennonite School, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m., the event will benefit another musical presentation - the “Messiah” Sing-Along - which has been held each spring and winter in Lancaster and Chester counties for more than 20 years. The “Messiah” Sing-Along is a musical event that includes no rehearsals and features volunteer singers and musicians. According to conductor Clair Leaman, the event is unique because people can just show up and sing. The piece is treated as a performance, but Leaman noted that sometimes people in the audience sing along too. The Lancaster County SingAlong has been held at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. The Chester County presentation has been held at Upper Octorara Presbyterian Church, 1121 Octorara Trail, Parkesburg. The next Chester County Sing-Along will be held on Friday, Dec. 28, and the next Lancaster County Sing-Along will be held on Friday, April 26, 2019. Kim, who was named concertmaster of the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1999, has been playing the violin since age 3. He began studying under Dorothy DeLay at the age of 8, and he holds bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the Juilliard School. He recently appeared as concertmaster of Pictured on front: David Kim

I had been involved with some other craft shows during my college years,” Rick recalled. “The week before the inaugural show, my father injured his back and was not able to participate. I stepped in at the last minute to organize the artists and craftspeople. From that first year we built the show with increasing attendance of both the public and artists,” he said. his father co-chaired the Art and Craft subcommittee of the county organization. Rick remembers that at the time of that first festival, Morris Ressel, the Lancaster city parks director, had worked with the July 4 event and liked what he saw. He approached Dick about presenting an Art Festival with the Long’s Park Amphitheater Foundation as a fundraiser for the foundation, which needed a new funding source for the free summer music presentations at the amphitheater. The goal was to organize and present a national-caliber art and craft festival in Lancaster. The first Labor Day show in 1979 was held in conjunction with the foundation’s annual day of music. A total of 87 artists and craftspeople exhibited. “I had recently finished my master’s degree and was not planning to become

In response to the need, COBYS has recently purchased a new building, called Murray Hill Center. The organization finalized 31 adoptions in the last year, hitting a milestone in May with 500 adoptions finalized over a 20-year time period. In addition, during the past year, COBYS added 24 new families to provide foster care, bringing the total to 116 families that have been trained and approved to care for children. However, the need is still outpacing resources. The 22nd annual Bike and Hike will be held at the Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Sunday, Sept. 9. The Bike and Hike is so named because it includes a variety of activities centered on biking - both on bicycles and on motorcycles - and walking. The fundraiser includes a 3-mile walk, 10- and 25-mile bicycle rides, and a 65-mile motorcycle ride dubbed the “Dutch Country Motorcycle Ride.” Those who participate may choose which event they wish to take part in and then donate a registration fee or raise money from sponsors. They may also utilize both strategies to help raise funds. Prizes will be offered to participants who raise specific amounts, and junior and senior high church youth groups that raise $1,500 or more may earn a gym and pizza night. Each event will begin at a different time throughout the afternoon, with the motorcycle registration beginning at 12:45 p.m. and the ride starting at 1:30 p.m. Walk and bicycle ride registration will begin immediately after the motorcycles leave, and the 25-mile bike ride will begin at 2 p.m., followed

by the walk and the 10-mile bike ride at 2:30 p.m. Each participant in the event will receive a T-shirt, ice cream as well as refreshments following the walk or ride, and a chance to win one of 100 door prizes, including gift cards to area restaurants and attractions, as well as clothing and merchandise donated by area businesses. For the third year in a row, the event will also include a silent auction, and organizers have gathered more than 50 items ranging in value for bidders. Tickets to local theater productions will be featured, along with artwork by local artists and a patio swing with a canopy. COBYS executive director Mark Cunningham, Fitzkee, and their wives will be competing for bids once again for their auction offering of meals for eight in their homes. Each couple hopes that their meal brings the highest price. The event tied a previous attendance record in 2017, when more than 600 area residents participated. “Last year we had a huge jump in participation by walkers,” said Fitzkee, who noted that more than 300 walkers took part. “We have (people who walk with) dogs, older people, and people pushing strollers,” said Lori Zimmerman, marketing and communications coordinator with COBYS. Individuals who register for the event by Wednesday, Sept. 5, will receive a discount. There is a discounted registration fee for motorcycle passengers. Registration for the Bike and Hike may be completed at www.cobys.org/bike-and-hike. Individuals who would like more information may email anne@cobys.org or call 717-656-6580.

utilize (the globe) to show mood changes, so the colors (on the globe) might change,” he said, adding that the prop is large enough to fit the entire band inside. “We spent a lot of time trying to develop this, and it will be pretty cool,” commented Tenaglia. Beatty said that learning the eightminute drill has presented a number of challenges for band members, particularly in the music. “There will be a lot of contrast between tempo and style,” she said. “(The music) will fade out and then cut right back in fast and strong, and it’s a challenge to convey that and make it work well.” Percussion and front ensemble sections will have features in the show, and the color guard will work with flags, rifles, and sabers. Saxophonist Gracie King will perform a solo, as will flute player John Grisbacher.

In addition to focusing daily on learning both the music and the drill, band camps often include elements of fun. “We have spirit days,” noted Beatty, who shared that daily themes were selected and band members were encouraged to dress up in accordance with the theme. “We have had Tie-Dye Day, Warwick Day, Sports Team Day, and Twin Day,” noted Beatty, who stated that the camaraderie of the camp served a team-building purpose. “Band camp is a good time to get to know everyone, and friendships get really close,” she said. That closeness may serve the band well as the members take part in Cavalcade of Bands Liberty Division this fall. WHS will join in the exhibition at Hempfield High School as well as the championship competition on Saturday, Nov. 10, and Sunday, Nov. 11, in Allentown.

Tenaglia noted that each movement will reflect a different facet of that story. “It starts with humans and the Earth living in harmony,” he explained, adding that the second movement will foucs on human interaction interfering with that peacefulness.” In the third movement, Tenaglia said the mood will be both reflective and remorseful. “(This is) where we realize what we’ve done,” he explained. to symbolize the soul’s journey to heaven. Lyle noted that the partnership with Mini-THON is an attempt to do something meaningful as a school community. The band leaders hope to create educational and fundraising opportunities for Mini-THON at football games and at the LCHS exhibition show. The band will perform in the Manheim Township, Ephrata, and McCaskey high school’s showcases, as well as its own. The marchers practiced the drill for three weeks in August, meeting the evenings of Aug. 4 through 9 and 21 through 23, as well as during band camp, which was held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug. 13 through 16 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug 17. Lyle expressed that she hopes the message of the show will resonate with audience members. “Everyone has known someone cancer has affected,” she said. “This year (our show will focus on) something that affects the entire community to raise awareness and band together to fight the problem (of childhood cancer).” Pictured on front: Lancaster Catholic High School band leaders (from left) Megan Lyle, Abby Francis, Katy Arnold, Rebecca Ressel, Sebastian Clemmer, Cate Lopez, and Erik Graybill worked with about 50 other band members to master the fall drill, called “This World of Words and Meanings,” during band camp, which was held at the school in August.

the third piece it is very harsh,” said Clemmer. Katy Arnold, spiritual life director, public relations coordinator, and percussion section member, was quick to point out that there is a moment of hope in the third movement when the music returns to the opener for a measure. Clemmer noted that although the third piece ends with the child dying, sadness does not prevail. “The end of the fourth movement is calm and uplifting (because) there’s a chance for redemption,” Clemmer said. Lyle explained, “The fourth movement follows the theme of (an afterlife). It’s really the beginning of something better.” Some of the lyrics to “On and On and On” will be sung by pit section leader Abby Francis. The color guard will play an important role in the drill, symbolizing the physical embodiment of the child. Color guard member Kaite Graybill will play the child, and Hillary Zink will play cancer, performing with a saber. “In the beginning all five color guard are dressed like children with teddy bears,” explained Arnold. Ressel added that the color guard members will then remove their flowing dresses to reveal tight black suits, which they will wear until the final movement when they will don white gowns. “They begin by representing a child in its innocence,” said Lyle. “The toll cancer takes on a (a child’s life is symbolized by the black outfits when that) innocence is ripped away. Golf Outing Will Aid LCCC Food Hub Approximately 11 out of every 100 people in Lancaster County do not know where they will get their next meal. “That’s a pretty significant number in a community of our size,” Lancaster County Council of Churches (LCCC) executive director Gail Rittenhouse observed after sharing the grave statistic. “Our Food Hub is filling that gap. (People experiencing food insecurity) know they can come to us and leave with 40 to 50 pounds of food once a month.” Last year, the LCCC Food Hub provided fresh and nutritious food to nearly 29,000 individuals, which is an increase of more than 3,400 from 2016. The majority of clients pick up food from the Food Hub, located at the LCCC headquarters at 812 N. Queen St., Lancaster, where in addition to receiving prepacked bags of nonperishable food, they may choose fresh produce and proteins. The Food Hub also delivers food to the residents of three low-income senior high-rise buildings, provides food for caseworkers to take to clients who are unable to travel to the Food Hub, and supplies some of the components for the free community meals hosted by Lancaster County churches. By the end of July 2018, the Food Hub had served 10.7 percent more people than it had at the same time in 2017. The food distributed to these individuals was obtained through a nearly even split between purchases from the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, where the Food Hub pays roughly 8 cents per pound, and items donated by individuals, local grocery stores, and restaurants.

“This speaks volumes to the support of the community donating to us,” Rittenhouse remarked. Rittenhouse and Steve and Alex Schramm hope community support extends to the fourth annual TransFOREmation Golf Tournament, which will be held on Friday, Sept. 14, at Overlook Golf Course, 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster. “We would love to get to $20,000,” said Steve, stating the fundraising goal for the event that he and Alex are chairing. Sponsorship opportunities are still available for the outing, and registrations for golfers will be accepted through Friday, Sept. 7. Each registered golfer will receive meals before and after the round, which will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m., free practice balls at the driving range, green fees and cart use, an entry in door prize drawings, eligibility for team and individual prizes, and a golfer’s welcome gift, which will include a sleeve of golf balls as well as other items. The Schramms are also planning a fun oncourse contest; past years have featured a long drive challenge with a marshmallow instead of a golf ball and a putting contest. Dinner will be provided by a Greekthemed food truck, and golfers will have access to unlimited water, soft drinks, and other beverages throughout the event. “It’s a great day and a great value,” Steve commented. The outing is also for a great cause. “Nobody wants to see anybody starving,” Alex stated. “(Food) is a basic human need.” The LCCC was founded by area churches

REVELATION

R016513

Aaron’s Acres Camp program held an Alex’s Lemonade Stand fundraiser on July 18 at Weis Markets in Manheim and at the Lancaster Shopping Center near A.C. Moore. The campers raised a total of more than $554 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. The participants are part of the Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows adolescents and young adults ages 13 to 21 with developmental disabilities to give back to others rather than just being recipients of services. During each Triple AOK twoweek camp session, campers attend the recreational program in the morning and are involved with seven community service projects in the afternoon. Recent projects included celebrating a Danner Home resident’s 100th birthday, playing games with residents at Pleasant View Retirement Community, holding a car wash at Stauffers of Kissel Hill on Rohrerstown Road and collecting donations for a local nonprofit organization, helping at Power Packs, and completing a variety of tasks at Mennonite Central Committee. Aaron’s Acres provides yearround recreational programs to children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with developmental disabilities in central Pennsylvania. For more information, readers may visit www.aaronsacres.org; call community outreach coordinator Maria Kapsak at 717-9176101, ext. 105; or call program director Elaine Burnett at 717-917-6101, ext. 103.

Tickets for the Millersville University Visual and Performing Arts 2018-19 season are now available. The Ware Center in Lancaster and the Winter Center in Millersville will present an exciting line-up featuring artists from every corner of the globe. A Season Launch Party will be held on Thursday, Sept. 6, at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., from 6 to 8:30 p.m. The free event will offer an opportunity to catch a glimpse of upcoming events. The Arts at Millersville season includes the Performing Arts Series featuring music of all genres, theater, and dance, as well as Family Fun Fest events. Club 42 showcases exciting jazz and cabaret acts in a club setting while the On Screen/ In Person film series brings compelling documentaries and filmmakers to the community for engaging conversations regarding relevant topics. University Arts includes student groups and faculty spotlights from the newly named Tell School of Music and a variety of University Theatre productions. The Performing Arts Series includes 35 events and will kick off on Thursday, Sept. 20, with jazz revivalists The Hot Sardines at the Ware Center. This series also includes theater performances such as “The Strange Case of Jekyll and Hyde,” a one-man show taking place on Friday, Oct. 26, just in time for Halloween. In the Atrium, the Club 42 series will feature an array of eclectic and multi-faceted jazz and cabaret artists from around the region. Along with intimate table seating, each Club event offers the option to purchase refreshments. The first Club 42 event, “Pick Up My Pieces: The Music of Willie Nelson,” will take place on Friday, Sept. 14, featuring singer Gabrielle Stravelli’s soulful renditions of Nelson classics. Family Fun Fest will continue to entertain children of all ages with events tailored to the whole family. Highlights include the return of Dan Zanes with a sensory friendly performance of Night Train 57 on Sunday, Sept. 23, and PA Ballet II performing a unique interpretation of “Prince Charming” on Saturday, Jan. 19, 2019. To get the best seats and discounts of the season, The Arts at Millersville will offer discount options through Sept. 6. For more details, including preseason ticket discounts and the full calendar of events, readers may visit www.artsmu.com. Tickets are available in person at the Ware Center box office and at the Student Memorial Center, Room 103, Millersville University campus on weekdays. Tickets are also available by calling 717-871-7600.
