Warwick teachers nurture young minds, build bright futures

Thework of teachers directly impacts students’ educations and development, and the role of everyone surrounding them is to support that work.

“I deal with almost every single staff member here, and we have some of the most caring and passionate people I have ever met,” said Carolyn Enigk, Warwick School District’s public relations and marketing coordinator. “We have amazing teachers and staff members here. They are a dedicated staff. We have members coming early and staying late. Our teachers are huge supporters of our students.”

Warwick’s 2023-24 school year is beginning on Wednesday, Aug. 30, across the district’s six buildingsWarwick High School, Warwick Middle School, John Beck Elementary School, John R. Bonfield Elementary School, Kissel Hill Elementary

School and Lititz Elementary School. The 180-day school year is slated to end on Thursday, June 6.

“You have to be dedicated,” said Enigk. “You don’t get that extra effort from someone who’s not passionate about what they are doing.

... It’s about collaboration and everyone giving 110% all the time.”

Warwick began the school year with all of its teaching positions filled. Enigk said that since the pandemic waned, the school district has enjoyed a full complement of teachers.

“The one thing we do is offer open positions to long-term substitutes once we hear about them,” said Enigk.

“That’s a great opportunity for them and us. They get a chance to see what Warwick is about and what the culture is like here. This past year, we knew a number of staff members were retiring, so we started hiring for the positions we knew we were going to have.”

This year, a total of 3,758 students See Warwick teachers pg 2

Lancaster Bible College is as relevant today as it’s ever been

Books have always played a critical role in college education. At one local college, the main focus is on perhaps the most studied book in the history of mankind - the Good Book.

“What makes us different is that we’re a Bible college,” said Lancaster Bible College, Capital Seminary & Graduate School (LBC) executive vice president Jael Chambers. “At most colleges, you can take a course in Christianity. But every class at Lancaster Bible College is coming from the Bible. We think about

what the Bible teaches and insert it into every course.”

Not unlike the Bible, LBC, whose main campus is located at 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, has stood the test of time.

This year, Lancaster Bible College is celebrating the 90th anniversary of its founding. Ninety years of positively influencing hundreds of thousands of young spirits, nine decades of serving, of being a part of the Lancaster community.

Sure, there’s been plenty of change, but some things just never go out of style.

With its recently introduced ghost tours, the Lititz Historical Foundation is seeking to shed light on past events and tales that had formerly been shrouded in mystery. The ghost tours have 300 years of Lititz history from which to spin their yarns.

“We’re telling about strange phenomena that are unexplained and ghost stories,” said Lititz Historical Foundation president Cory Van Brookhoven. “Some people say there are ghosts in Lititz. There’s a possibility there might be. I think that some things can be explained,

always changing,” said Enigk. “The constant for teachers is adaptability. They are constantly working on ways to improve. The one priority that has not changed is the love and care for their students.”

“I think the future’s bright,” continued Enigk. “We have a dedicated staff whose goal is to keep students engaged and motivated. I feel like we’ll just keep following that pattern of making sure every single student has an opportunity to succeed and flourish. The day-to-day working with students who are going to be our future is a critical role.”

Ice cream social to feature Tom Petty tribute band Get Petty

The Lititz Historical Foundation’s annual ice cream social will be held on Sunday, Sept. 3, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Mary Oehme Gardens, located behind the foundation, 145 E. Main St., Lititz.

The event will feature music provided by Get Petty, a Tom Petty cover band that formed during the pandemic. The band’s members were drawn together by their shared love of Petty’s music, including hits with the Heartbreakers, the Traveling Wilburys, and Mudcrutch, and in Petty’s solo career. Although the band is new, its members have a combined total of more than 100 years of professional experience playing in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland.

Attendees are advised to bring blankets and chairs. Refreshments will be available for a nominal fee.

Admission is by donation, with

proceeds helping the historical foundation to preserve its gardens and 18th-century structures. Ice cream will be provided by Greco’s Italian Ices and Homemade Ice Cream of Lititz. The musical performance is sponsored by Shenny Enterprises.

Sweet,

“Ninety years is a testament to God and how he uses people to share his Gospel across the world,” said Chambers. “It’s unbelievable to see the connections the college has made over the years. We’re rooted in the past and building for the future.”

Established as Lancaster Bible School in September of 1933 by Henry J. Heydt, the college welcomed an initial class consisting of 22 students. By the 1970s, Lancaster Bible College had expanded to include 400 students and a campus of 36 acres.

Today, Thomas Kiedis is LBC’s sixth president, the campus is 100 acres in size and the school is recognized as one of the top online Bible colleges in the country.

“I think the best thing about Lancaster Bible College is that over those 90 years, it has stayed true to the mission,” said Chambers. “The mission has stayed the same, even though we deliver it differently. We want to help you on your Christian journey.”

LBC now operates satellite campuses in Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. It offers more than 80 different certificates, bachelor’s, associate, master’s and doctoral degrees, and this year’s total enrollment across all of its campuses is expected to exceed 2,350 students.

LBC boasts a student-to-instructor ratio of 15-to-1, and studentathletes from the school compete in 20 intercollegiate sports. The average age of Lancaster Bible College students is 33.6 years, and this year’s incoming Class of 2027 features residents from 22 states and four foreign countries.

Lancaster Bible College, Capital Seminary & Graduate School employs 58 full-time faculty members, 272 adjunct faculty members and 147 full-time staff members.

“There’s a difference when you go to a Bible college,” said Chambers. “Sometimes with all the noise, the message can get blurry. We want to be ready for what God has in store for us. We want to show people what God is doing here. We want to reimagine how we share the Gospel.”

and some things can’t. We’re not coming to conclusions. We’re letting the people on the tours decide. We’re just telling the stories.”

The Lititz Historical Foundation will conduct its family-friendly, 45minute ghost tours on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 10 a.m., noon, 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. from Sept. 6 to Nov. 4. Hosted by guides, the ghost tours will visit 10 locations on East Main Street in the borough, and each location has its own story.

The tour is designed to raise money to help defray the Lititz Historical Foundation’s operating costs.

“I don’t want to give too much away,” said Van Brookhoven. “Some people may hear creepy sounds. The stories are from the past, most are from the last 150 years, but some as recent as 20 years ago. It’s an opportunity for people to learn a side of Lititz that is not often talked about.”

Among the ghost tour stops are a local tavern from the 1700s, a mysterious grave located in the basement of a Lititz shop, the site of a former Revolutionary War hospital and an authentic corpse house originally constructed in 1786.

“This is not a ghost hunt; it’s a ghost tour,” Van Brookhoven said. “With ghost hunts you have equipment, like recording devices.”

The ghost tours will be held at a time of the year when some people celebrate Halloween.

“It’s something that, if successful, we want to bring back as a seasonal event,” Van Brookhoven noted.

Initially, Van Brookhoven began giving his own personal ghost tours of Lititz in 2016. Just recently, he lent his script and research on local ghosts to the Lititz Historical Foundation.

Early responses to the ghost tour have been favorable.

“We’re finding it’s a lot of locals,” said Van Brookhoven, “and some are tourists. We’ve got a ton of bookings coming up.”

The ghost tours are just another example of the Lititz Historical Foundation creatively incorporating local history into its fundraising efforts.

“As a nonprofit, everything is a fundraiser,” said Van Brookhoven.
