Doris Kreiter of Lititz is not happy that her husband, Dave, is retiring even though Dave is 83. “I hate to see him retire because we have a good time,” said Doris, referring to her husband giving up calling square dances, which he has been doing since the mid1970s. The pair founded the Swing Thru Square Dance Club in 1974. Doris is still looking forward to the last two fun nights of calling that Dave has on his schedule. Although Dave is retiring, the club he and Doris founded is still going strong, and members are excited to teach

square dancing to the next generation. In fact, the club will offer two free introductory nights for those who are interested in learning a bit about this form of dance. The club invites singles, couples, groups, and families to Luther Acres Wellness Center, 600 E. Main St., Lititz, on Thursdays, Sept. 12 and 19, at 7 p.m. Classes will begin on Thursday, Oct. 3, at 7 p.m. The Kreiters first experienced square dancing at a Lancaster establishment called Worh’s Play Barn, which was located behind the stockyards in Lancaster. “We enjoyed it,” commented Doris. “We decided we wanted to take lessons.” The couple headed to Bob Lintner’s home in See Square Dance Club pg 4

Doris and Dave Kreiter were dressed to square dance in 2014. Dave is retiring from calling square dances and running the Swing Thru Square Dance Club the two founded in the 1970s. Cavod To Stage Pirate Musical By Ann Mead Ash

Cordell Huyard, director of Cavod Theatre, cannot keep his enthusiasm about the group’s fall show from bubbling over. “‘The Pirates of Penzance’ is such a fun show. It’s hilarious,” gushed Huyard. “Audiences walk away having really enjoyed it (because it’s) such a crowd favorite.” “The Pirates of Penzance” will be staged at Cavod Theatre, 685 W. Main St., New Holland, at 7 p.m. on Fridays, Sept. 20 and 27; at 2 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Sept. 21 and 28; and at 4 p.m. on Sundays, Sept. 22 and 29. First produced in 1879, the maritime musical by Gilbert and Sullivan is an energetic work focused on Frederic, played by Nolen Petosky, a young man who, as a child, was mistakenly apprenticed to a pirate rather than a pilot. The error is the fault of Ruth, Frederic’s hard-of-hearing nursemaid, played by See Pirate Musical pg 6

Square Dance Club from pg 1 Lampeter for lessons, which they took for at least a year. “During class I was fascinated with (Bob’s) calling, and I wanted to get into it,” said Dave. “Toward the end of class, he would let me do a singing call.” After the couple finished taking lessons and founded the club, they held a dance class for teenagers at the old Lititz Rec Center, which was located in Lititz Springs Park. “We finally advertised the class and a couple of the guys and girls got together, and we discussed what to name the group and came up with the Swing Thru,” said Dave. They were also involved in dances in the area and around the state. “We went to a lot of square dances and to the convention at State College,” recalled Doris. By 1976, Dave was ready to crank things up a notch. “I went to callers school in Harrisonburg, Va.,” said Dave. “There were four callers that ran the school, and (students) got up early and

went to class morning, afternoon, and evening.” Dave explained that calling came naturally to him, but he sometimes heard other students practicing calls as late as 2 a.m. “There are different types of calling,” Dave noted. Singing calls are done to familiar songs. Dave used “Me and My Shadow” often. Dave also likes to do calling that is referred to as “hash” or “patter.” “That is when I put the needle down (on the record) and the dancers do whatever I call. I tear them apart and put them back together.” Dave is licensed to call through Callerlab, the International Association of Square Dance Callers, and the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. Square dances are divided into Mainstream, which are the most basic; Plus, which are a bit beyond basic; and Advanced, for those who wish to go See Square Dance Club pg 7

The silent and gift basket auctions will open at 8 a.m., and the live auction will start at 9 a.m. Fast, who is an artist and a member of the art auction committee for Fellowship Day, is donating a necklace she created called “My Ticking Heart.” She has also contributed “White Stallion,” a portrait of a horse created from fused glass. The Honamans donated two Mary Hoyer dolls made in Reading, along with a Dream Baby doll made in Germany. Fred’s mother, Mary, who lived at the community with his father, Earl, after 1977, made the clothing for the Hoyer dolls, one of which wears roller skates. The dress on the 100-year-old Dream Baby doll is the original linen gown that came with the doll. Dagen will donate the 1989 Cadillac DeVille sedan that he bought from his brother-in-law in Florida in 1993. After driving the car on a visit, Dagen told his brother-in-law to keep him in mind if he ever wanted to sell. He said his wife, Mabel, especially liked the car because the windshield allowed her a wider view when she was driving. The auction has become known for the quality artwork that goes up for bids. This year, an oil painting of calla lilies by Paris Wyatt Llanso will be among the offerings, along with a Gladys Zeiset oil called “Evening Sky Over New Holland, PA.” Other items to be auctioned will include crafts, home and yard goods, antiques, collectible items, and quilts. Alonna Sprunger, director of advancement for Landis Homes and one of the organizers of the auction, noted that this year an exhibit of old and new cars,

mostly owned by residents, has been added to the day. Spectators may vote for their favorites with bills and change, and the car that collects the most money by 2 p.m. will be voted Best of Show. The 47th annual Fellowship Day, will also include breakfast, which will be available for purchase at 7 a.m., as well as children’s activities. From 9 a.m. to noon, Lisa Landis from Kids Cookie Break will broadcast live, and a bounce castle and barrel train rides will be available. The Garden Railroad Village will be open for visits from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Other sale traditions at the event include the Market Place, which includes yard sale items, gift certificates, an art gallery, a pantry, and a produce stand. Share-A-Meal Adventures, gift certificates, and a variety of handmade items will also be sold. Grandma’s Attic and the Linen Closet are traditional sale areas where attendees may find gently used treasures available for purchase. In addition to breakfast items, which will include sandwiches, yogurt, doughnuts, and coffee, the food stand will sell soup, hot dogs, sub sandwiches, and salads. Chicken barbecue meals, which include a half-chicken, a baked potato, applesauce, a roll, and a beverage, will go on sale at 10:30 a.m. Just half-chickens will be sold as well. Sprunger said a goal of raising $160,000 for the fund has been set for the day. Readers who would like to learn more about Fellowship Day or view auction items may visit www.landishomes.org. More information is available by calling 717-509-5490.

Jennifer Shaffer. To make matters worse, Frederic’s apprenticeship was supposed to end on the day he turns 21; however, it is discovered that the boy was born on Feb. 29 in a leap year, meaning that he still has many years as an apprentice before he reaches his liberation. Frederic has fallen in love with Mabel, played by Katherine Lindsley. Moses Mariscal plays Mabel’s father, Major-General Stanley, who proclaims himself in a well-known song “the very model of a modern Major-General.” Neal Sheaffer will play the Pirate King, with Francisco Ortiz as Samuel, his lieutenant, and James Paxson as the Sergeant of Police. Cavod’s “Pirates” will be directed by Reji Woods, with musical direction by Michael Truitt

and choreography by Jessica Rajski. Huyard said that the show represents an important era in entertainment history. “It’s kind of like the transition from operas to modern-day musical theater,” he said, noting that the comedy is technically an opera. “At the time, the term musical theater (didn’t exist).” Calling the music beautiful, Huyard noted that the vocal parts are incredibly difficult. “It’s an operetta, so the female lead is singing stuff similar to what the female lead in the ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ would sing,” he said, noting that he believes the cast has the background and musical ability to make the show a success. “(These cast members are) some of the strongest vocal talents we have had here,” he said.

According to Huyard, the script mixes laughs with heartwarming moments and tops it off with the variety of songs. “The hilarity and comedy of the story is encased in this beautiful music,” said Huyard. “It’s hilarious, but it is also heartwarming.” He noted that the timeless themes appeal to people of all ages. “There is a beautiful love story, but there are moments where you just have to laugh at these characters,” he said. “Who doesn’t love pirates running around on stage making fools of themselves?” Huyard reported that cast members are having fun exploring their parts. “The characters are zany and off the wall, and playing a pirate is so much fun,” he noted, adding that the daughters of the Major-General are fun and quirky characters as well. Cavod’s stage space is limited, but Huyard noted that the show fits the accom-

Huyard hopes that members of the community of all ages will see the production. “The grandson who loves pirates is going to have a blast watching these pirates being chased by police officers,” Huyard said of the slapstick scenes that should appeal to children. “Adults will love it because of the beautiful music, so it’s a great family outing, but it’s also a great date night show because it’s a romantic comedy,” he added. “If you like pirates or if you love music, you’re going to love this show.” Tickets, which are discounted for students age 17 and under, may be purchased in advance at www.CavodAcademy.com or by calling 717-354-3355. Dave noted that he has called for groups that danced in swimming pools, on lawns, and on the beach. More than once, a group of dancers would go to a restaurant after a dance and ask if they could dance there. “After a while they would push tables back,” recalled

Dave. “There was no music.” “They would just dance what he was calling,” finished Doris. Dave judged the square dancing at the annual Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg for about 20 years. “We judged on dancing skills, timing, execution of calls,” he said. Doris remembers when the couple attended a national square dancing convention in Atlantic City in 1976 with

about 27,000 other dancers. Although the pair has not danced in a while, they highly recommend dancing for coordination and exercise. “It’s good for your brain,” said Doris. “It’s good for your (heart),” added Dave. Lititz recCenter, Lititz Borough, Derck and Edson, and Pelger Engineering have planned a comeback for the aquatics recreation facility. As of Aug. 26, construction and grant contracts in the works since 2018 were being executed to not only secure a renewal of Lititz Springs Pool, but a plan to have the fully renovated pool open for the summer of 2020. Months of effort in navigating design and engineering details, budgets, contracting, and grant funding have yielded a $4.5 million project plan that will not drastically change the landscape of the complex, but will enable the pool to operate with new, efficient life systems, ADA compliant access, remodeled bathhouses, and new and expanded aquatics recreation space. Filtration, pumps, piping, circulation, and chemical systems, which are all hidden from view, are the most costly and critical parts of the project. Expanding pool space and incorporating new features adds to the capacity needed from new systems. The bathhouses will be remodeled to include all new finishes, fixtures, and floor plans, plus a handicapped-accessible family changing and shower room. While, ultimately, project budgeting will not allow for a separate third wading pool for toddlers to be retained, the main pool will be expanded with a large beachlike zero-entry area for both young children and adults to enjoy. This area will
