GTGH Adds 10 New Nonprofit Organizations For 2018 By Ann Mead Ash
Of the 30 organizations that will be represented at the 2018 Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Fair, 10 will be new to the event. Among those will be Lancaster Farm Sanctuary; Music for Everyone, known for placing pianos throughout downtown Lancaster; Faith Friendship Ministries; and The Edible Classroom. This year’s fair, which will be held on Saturday, Dec. 8, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, will offer shoppers a variety of ways to purchase gifts that honor loved ones and help others. In addition, fair-trade items and food will be available for purchase, and a n e d u c a t i o n a l p r e s e n t a t i o n fo r children will be included.
Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, founded by Jonina Turzi and Sarah Salluzzo, is a nonprofit micro-sanctuary created to advocate for farm animals. “We have a few acres, and we have a few ambassadors for each species,” explained Turzi. “We rescue animals, and we hold public events where humans can interact with the animals and hear their stories.” Turzi noted that the animals at the farm were rescued from abusive or neglectful situations, but they are not available for adoption. She listed two types of chickens, sheep, dairy cows, pygmy goats, a turkey, and several ducks that now live permanently at the sanctuary. More information about the organization may be found at www.lancasterfarmsanctuary.org. See GTGH Fair pg 6
The Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Fair, founded by Jen Knepper (center), will be held on Dec. 8. Representatives of organizations that will take part include (from left) Gwen Didden, Beth Horst, Brendan Stengle, and Jonina Turzi.
LBC And Servant Stage To Produce “Titanic” Musical By Ann Mead Ash
is hosted at The General Sutter Inn, 14 E. Main St., Lititz, every Monday at 7 p.m. Lifetree is a weekly program that involves friendly conversations about various topics. The Sept. 10 program, “The Art of Listening,” will include a film featuring NPR’s StoryCorps founder, David Isay. StoryCorps has collected and archived more than 40,000 interviews with a total of nearly 80,000 participants. Participants will learn about practical tools for connecting deeply with others. All are invited to the free community event. For details, visit www.lifetreecafelancaster.us, search for “Lifetree Cafe - Lititz” on Facebook, or contact Pastor Jason at 717-333-9238 or jbperkowski@gmail.com.
Wally Calderon, artistic director with Servant Stage Company, admits that there is an element of preconception in staging “Titanic,” the 1997 musical with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston and a book by Peter Stone. “There is no surprise ending,” said Calderon of the musical that has been on his shortlist of shows for some time. Calderon loves the show because of its “character-driven depiction” of the historical events and the stories it tells that draw audience members into the story. “(Audience members grow) attached to the historical figures involved,” said Calderon. “That’s the See “Titanic” pg 7
Members of the cast of the Servant Stage production of “Titanic” include (from left) Rebekah Hill, Jessica Dey, Rob Bigley, Adler Roberts, Matthew Wilhelm, Donna Schilke, and Jon Rider. The show is being staged in partnership with Lancaster Bible College, and presentations will be held at the college’s Good Shepherd Chapel on several dates in September.
Annual Fellowship Day Planned By Ann Mead Ash
When Landis Homes resident Jacqueline Myers was a child, she lived with her parents in Belgium, where they ran a home for orphaned children. Following World War II, Myers recalled that many colorful quilts were donated to the orphanage by Mennonite organizations in the United States. When she immigrated, Myers aimed to learn quilting, and she eventually retired to Lancaster County, where she learned the art. Now, Myers is giving back by donating her Magic Tiles quilted piece to be auctioned at the Landis Homes Fellowship Day, which will be held at the community, See Fellowship Day pg 2
Roy Weaver (left), Jacqueline Myers, and Sadie are looking forward to the 46th annual Landis Homes Fellowship Day, to be held at the retirement community on Sept. 8. The day will feature a chicken barbecue, an auction of artwork by well-known local artists, and more.

Bigley was also excited to announce that The Kings’s Singers will perform at The Trust on Tuesday, Dec. 4, and Wednesday, Dec. 5. Bigley noted that the London-based group is the “most famous vocal ensemble in the world.” Pianist Daniel Hsu was only a teenager when he first played at The Trust during the venue’s third season. “He had just won the Concert Artists Guild award (when he performed here before), and in 2017, he won bronze in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition,” said Bigley, who added that Hsu will be just 21 when he appears at The Trust on Thursday, Jan. 24, 2019.
