Help wanted, must love singing

Whenit comes to singing, the Lititz Area Community Choir’s philosophy is “the more, the merrier.”

The local ensemble is seeking new members as it prepares for its upcoming holiday presentation of “The Glow of Christmas” on Sunday, Dec. 17, at Grace Church, 501 W. Lincoln Ave., Lititz. There is no fee to join.

“The purpose of the Lititz Area Community Choir is to further enjoy singing, to enjoy singing in a group and enjoy the camaraderie associated with it,” said the choir’s director, Debbie Kline-Smith. “Music brings a lot of joy to people. The warmth and joy they feel in their heart from singing is amazing.”

She noted that the choir also provides opportunities to form friendships.

Currently, the choir, which is still in its developmental stage, numbers around 75 members. Kline-Smith said she’d like to add 25 to 30 more singers.

Suicide Prevention Conference seeks to provide hope for those in despair

Among the keys to suicide prevention seem to be education, intervention and empathy.

It is with these ideas in mind that the annual Suicide Prevention Conference will be conducted on Tuesday, Sept. 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Spooky Nook Sports, 75 Champ Blvd., Manheim. The conference is being sponsored by the Suicide Prevention Coalition, a subsidiary of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC).

“We’d like to have 100 people by Christmas,” said Kline-Smith. “That’s my goal. ... We’re looking for whoever wants to come and sing, but everyone who has come out to this point has had some singing in their past.”

A one-time Warwick School District music educator, Kline-Smith founded the Lititz Area Community Choir in August of 2022 as an alumni choir designed to give former

Warwick singers an opportunity to continue nurturing their love of music. But in many ways, the choir has taken on a life of its own.

“When I was retiring, (a group of former students) said to me, ‘Why don’t we have an alumni choir?’” said Kline-Smith. “We got together, and I asked them, ‘Do

you think it will work?’ And they said, ‘Yes.’ And the choir was born. Now there is something for people to be a part of, they speak to other people and that’s how we got more members.”

Kline-Smith said that the choir’s spring showcase of “A Night on Broadway” produced 20 new members.

“It was well received by the community,” said Kline-Smith of the spring show. “It’s a win-win. Everyone gets to sing, and the community enjoys it.”

“I strive for excellence, and they know it,” she said. “People want to be a part of something that’s successful. I want it to be fun, something to look forward to, something to be proud of.”

The initial rehearsal for “The Glow of Christmas” will be held on Thursday, Sept. 21, at 7 p.m. at Brunnerville United Methodist Church, 517 Pine Hill Road, Lititz.

Singers interested in joining the Lititz Area Community Choir should email Kline-Smith at d.a.klinesmith@gmail.com.

“I think we could cut down on 90% of suicides in Lancaster County,” said Kim McDevitt, the executive director of MHALC. “We want to teach people how to have tough conversations.”

As part of World Suicide Prevention Month, the Suicide Prevention Conference is expected to draw 250

people, mostly mental health professionals, to Manheim. But the conference is also meant to serve laypeople and community members who have been impacted by suicide.

The Suicide Prevention Conference will feature a number of renowned presenters, including keynote speaker Earl Granville, and See Suicide prevention pg 12

Quilter’s Yard-age Sale to benefit MCC

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) invites quilters, sewists and crafters to the 2023 Quilter’s Yard-age Sale on Friday, Sept. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 9, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Named after the substantial amounts of fabric yardage for sale, the event will take place at the

Material Resource Center (MCR), located at 517 W. Trout Run Road, Ephrata.

Throughout the year, donations of fabric, sewing supplies and unfinished quilting projects are given to the MRC. These items come from people who are cleaning out their sewing rooms,

downsizing their homes or closing their fabric stores. Bringing these donations to the MRC keeps sewing and quilting items from ending up in the landfill. It also helps to support the ministries of MCC in relief, development and peacebuilding. Since there is no longer a Quilt Preview in the spring, these items will be available for purchase at the Quilter’s Yard-age Sale.

In addition, the Quilter’s Yard-age Sale will feature unfinished quilt projects, vintage items, quilt books and magazines, patterns, pre-priced finished quilts, wall hangings, sewing tools and notions and supplies.

Upcycled items handmade by MRC volunteers will also be available for purchase, including woven rag rugs and table runners, tote bags, potholders and aprons made from donated textiles.

Proceeds from the Quilter’s Yard-

age Sale benefit MCC’s ministries around the world. MCC is a global, nonprofit organization that strives to share God’s love and compassion for all through relief, development and peace.

For more information about the Quilter’s Yard-age Sale, call 717-7332847, email EastCoastMRC@mcc.org or visit www.mcc.org/events/quilters -yard-age-sale. Only cash or checks will be accepted at the sale.

Bike & Hike fundraising event planned

The 27th annual Bike & Hike, hosted by COBYS Family Services, will be held on Sunday, Sept. 10, at the Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. The signature components of the gathering are a 3-mile walk through Lititz, a 10- or 25-mile bicycle ride and a 65-mile motorcycle ride. All events will end back at the church for the Incredible Ice Cream Celebration. First-time and returning participants are encouraged to join in. The Bike & Hike provides an opportunity for individuals and families or other groups to support vulnerable children and families in the community while enjoying fresh air and tasty treats. As part of Bike & Hike, COBYS has launched the Kick-

start Fund again this year. The goal is to raise $25,000 before Sept. 10 and raise awareness of the services COBYS provides. Those who are not able to bike or hike are encouraged to attend the Incredible Ice Cream Celebration around 3:15 p.m. or make a donation to support the foster care, adoption, counseling and family life education related services provided by the human services organization.

Additionally, this year is the last Bike & Hike that longtime COBYS executive director Mark Cunningham will be in that role, as he will retire at the end of the year. Cunningham has decided to lead the walk this year and encourage sponsorship for his participation.

Registration will begin for the motorcycle ride at 12:30 p.m. and for the walk and bicycle ride at 1:30 p.m. The motorcycle ride will start at 1:30 p.m., followed by the 25-mile bike ride at 2 p.m. and the walk and 10mile bike ride at 2:30 p.m.

Over the Bike & Hike’s existence, a total of more than $2.1 million has been raised through the event.

Preregistration is encouraged but not required, and a set minimum donation is requested. To register, visit www.cobys.org/bike-and-hike.

Full event information is available on the aforementioned website, and participants can create their own online fundraising page to gain support from friends and family.

Motivated by Christian faith, COBYS Family Services seeks to educate, support and empower children and adults to reach their full potential. Located in Lancaster County, COBYS provides a range of foster care, adoption, counseling and family life education services throughout the region. COBYS not only addresses physical safety but also emotional

Conestoga River for the traditional race and primary attraction of the festival. Ducks may be adopted online ahead of the event or on the day of the race, and each owner of a racing duck will be entered into a drawing for cash prizes and gift cards. Sponsorships are also available for the race; sponsors and those who adopt a duck will receive a souvenir duckie to take home, which will include limited-edition Halloween- and back-toschool-themed ducks. To adopt a duck or to become a sponsor, visit www.schreiberpediatric.org/events/ duckies.

Since the festival began 35 years ago, it has cemented its role as a beloved tradition in the community, and it draws more than 1,000 attendees each year. The event serves as

one of the largest yearly fundraisers for Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster. The funds raised from ticket sales and duck sponsorships are used to cover the organization’s operational expenses and cost of treatment for patients who cannot pay in full. The price of adopting 15 ducks will cover the cost of one hour of a patient’s uncompensated treatment.

“We never turn a client away based on their ability to pay,” said Kristen Masengarb, associate director of fund development for Schreiber. “As an organization, we lose an average of $75 per hour of treatment that isn’t covered by insurance or Medicaid.”

Additionally, the funds raised by the Rubber Duckie Race and Festival will help Schreiber to complete its

Happy trails: Tips to help seniors travel safely

Travel was once a key component of the picture that working professionals created of their ideal retirements. While the COVID-19 pandemic put many retirement travel plans on hold in recent years, jetting off to distant locales is once again on retirees’ radars.

Eagerness to get back on the road, in the air or on the high seas could make it easy to overlook some principles of safe travel. Such an oversight could lead to complications that could make it hard to enjoy time away from home. The following tips may reduce the likelihood that seniors encounter trouble while traveling.

- Determine if any health issues are affecting the planned destination. The Centers for Disease Control and

Prevention offers an online resource that provides the latest travel health notices for a multitude of travel destinations, along with recommendations of vaccinations that travelers should have. To access the resource, visit www.cdc.gov/travel/page/ travel-vaccines.

- Speak to a physician. A pre-trip consultation with a physician can uncover any issues that might arise during a trip. Health conditions may be easily managed for domestic travelers who are not planning to visit any especially remote locations, but some issues may not necessarily be as easily navigated when traveling overseas. Physicians can also recommend vaccinations or other measures to protect one’s health while

traveling. In addition, a pre-trip doctor visit is a great time to refill prescriptions that will be needed during a vacation.

- Take financial precautions as well. Of course, not all travel-related concerns are medical. Finances also require attention prior to a trip. Inflation has caused a sharp spike in the price of various commodities since the start of 2022, so travelers should study up on the cost of food and attractions at their destination to ensure they take enough money. Baggage costs have risen significantly in recent years, so seniors traveling on a budget may want to pack less and do laundry while traveling in an effort to save money. In addition, the unpredictable nature of travel since

most important things older adults can do to protect their overall health. Exercise helps to delay or prevent many of the conditions that come with age. Adults age 65 and older should aim for the recommended 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, such as brisk walking, and at least two days of activities that strengthen muscles. When it comes to muscle strengthening, seniors can follow a few safety guidelines.

- Speak with a health care provider first. Before beginning an exercise regimen, people should have a discussion with their general practitioner about their fitness goals. The doctor can recommend strategies that are safe and point out any exercises that may compromise the patient’s overall health.

- Master basic exercises first. Anyone new to strength training, which is sometimes known as resistance training, can start out slowly, even just using body weight to provide resistance. Resistance exercises can

- Privately share the trip itinerary. Prior to departing, travelers should share their itinerary with friends and family members. They should avoid sharing the itinerary on social media platforms, which can make them a target for criminals at home and at their destination. A trainer also can create a routine that includes the right number of sets and repetitions to gradually build and maintain muscle mass. Landis Homes Fellowship Days to help residents live their best lives

One of the most effective ways to ensure benevolent care is through fellowship.

At least, that’s the approach that Landis Homes is taking with its Fellowship Days. The Manheim Township senior living community is seeking to raise $200,000 to help provide continued care for residents who have outlived their financial resources.

Landis Homes will conduct its annual Fellowship Days from Monday, Sept. 11, through Saturday, Sept. 16, on its campus at 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. A variety of activities will be offered each day, all for one good cause.

“We call it ‘fill the gap,’ or the ‘Caring Fund,’” said Janice Nikoloff, Landis Homes’ event coordinator. “Benevolent care is very important. Sometimes things get complicated, and resources get tight. I think we’ll meet that ($200,000) goal. We bring it up every year. The stakes keep getting higher.”

“It’s a community event,” continued Nikoloff. “To me, fellowship means a time for gathering and sharing time with people you live and work with. It’s an opportunity to get to know them better.”

Landis Homes Fellowship Days will begin on Monday with an online auction and conclude with an activity-filled day on Saturday. In between, the Landis Homes campus will come alive with hymn sings, a talent show, speakers, food, games, music, entertainment, a harvest day celebration, yard sales, crafts, children’s activities and a live quilt auction.

“There’s something going on for everyone each day,” said Nikoloff. “We hope that it’s a very exciting and joyful time for people. It allows residents to meet new people. It’s laid back, but it’s a fun event. I like changing things up, so people don’t get bored.”

Nikoloff said that up to 300 individuals could attend each activity. Landis Homes does host other events and fundraisers throughout the year, but none are as complex and involved as Fellowship Days.

This year will mark the 51st edition of Landis Homes Fellowship Days. Originally a one-day event, Landis Homes Fellowship Days has been a weeklong celebration since the onset of the pandemic.

“It’s kind of changed and become a weeklong series of things,” said Nikoloff. “We’re trying to make it something for people to look forward to. There’s a lot going on, and

l

people can participate.”

“Initially, it was just a gathering,” Nikoloff continued. “They started having a chicken barbecue, and then at some point, the auctions were added. About 25 years ago, we started to raise money for the Caring Fund (benevolent care). It’s evolved quickly, but always with the idea of fellowship right before the fall comes. I think it’s continuing to evolve, and we need to pay attention to what’s working.”

The founding of Landis Homes in 1964 only predates Fellowship

Days by several years. Landis Homes, which offers independent living, assisted living and more personal health care, hosts 850 current residents.

“It started out largely as a place for returning Mennonite missionaires to retire to,” said Nikoloff. “It was a much smaller facility, and it kept expanding over the years. I think the initial mission has grown. We’re always thinking,‘Who are we?’”

first strength training session should only last 10 to 15 minutes, according to Tiffany Chag, a strength coach at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York. This time limit enables the person to gauge soreness. Anyone new to strength training should wait until soreness abates before beginning the next session.

Exercises that build strength are a vital part of maintaining health as a senior. These exercises help maintain muscle mass and also improve balance and bone health.

“This is a great opportunity to bring the community together and let people know how things used to be done,” said Ron Bernhard, describing Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days. The festivities will be held on Saturday, Sept. 16, and Sunday, Sept. 17, at Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge. The Conoy Lions Club will serve breakfast beginning at 7 a.m. both days. Opening ceremonies will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and at 10 a.m. on Sunday.

This is the 25th annual event, which features machinery exhibits, craft vendors, demonstrations and more.

A fishing derby for children age 15 and under will be held following the opening ceremonies each morning. Participants should bring their own bait and rod. A tractor parade will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday. On Sunday morning, an interdenominational church service will be held from 9 to 10 a.m.

Live entertainment will include a performance by a bluegrass band, beginning about 10 a.m. on Saturday. A benefit auction will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, featuring household goods, antiques, baked goods and more. Proceeds from the auction will be used to fund future Old-Fashioned Field Days.

“We have a lot of demonstrations going on throughout the whole

event,” said Tonya Bernhard, who is on the event committee with Ron. Demonstrations will include corn shelling and corn grinding, shingle sawing and apple cider making. A chainsaw carving demonstration will also be held.

A variety of antique walkbehind garden tractors will be on display, along with other lawn and garden equipment. Revolutionary War and Civil War re-enactors will be on-site as well. Local churches and nonprofit groups will set up stands, with food options including homemade ice cream, homemade apple dumplings, hot dogs, french fries and soup.

“This event is very family-oriented, and we have a lot of kids’ activities,” Ron noted, adding that barrel train rides and a hayride to a pumpkin patch will be offered.

Many people come to the event and stay all day, Tonya said, encouraging people to bring chairs to sit on while listening to the music or watching demonstrations.

She emphasized that Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days, which is hosted by the Conoy Lions Club, would not be possible without the support of the community and a team of volunteers.

“It’s just a really fun community event,” she stated. “It’s a nice way to bring everybody together.”

For more information on the event, search for “Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days” on Facebook.

Suicide prevention

frompg 1

will conclude with a panel discussion. Among the topics to be addressed are how to sit with someone who wants to die, supporting co-workers, the power of community and creating a culture of prevention.

“There’s a huge need in our community,” said Liz Grubb, education director for MHALC and the director of the conference. “I think education is power when it comes to prevention. We’re trying to view people with worth and value. We’re tackling a culture shift.”

The statistics are alarming. Lancaster County averages about 70 suicides each year, and as of July, a total of 41 county residents had taken their own lives in 2023.

“Our county is in line with the national averages,” said Grubb. “About two out of three adults believe they don’t have enough knowledge to identify the risks of suicide, but eight out of 10 would like to have more knowledge. When we see something, we have to speak up.”

Stress, anxiety and depression are some of the leading factors associated with suicides.

“It’s an impulsive decision,” said McDevitt. “They think that no one cares. The brain tricks them into thinking no one cares.”

Located at 245 Butler Ave., Suite 204, Lancaster, MHALC has a mission is to educate people about mental health and support the county’s mental health needs.

“We are the hub of mental health providers,” said McDevitt. “We are the go-to for people seeking mental health education and support. We’re taking down barriers. We’re pushing for hard conversation.”

To register for the Suicide Prevention Conference, go to www.mha lancaster.org/conference. The deadline to register is Sunday, Sept. 10.
