Historical Foundation Plans World War II Weekend he Lititz Historical Foundation is giving area residents an opportunity to experience the times and culture of the World War II era by holding a free event on Saturday, Sept. 18, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Mary Oehme Gardens, located behind the historical foundation museum at 145 E. Main St., Lititz. The event will include a World War II encampment, featuring more than 20 re-enactors, along with items that were once owned, used, or worn by the servicemen who served. Visitors will learn about Rosie the Riveter as a representative of the women who stepped up and performed important and necessary jobs on the home front. On that subject, “The American Home Front,” a full-sized room-by-room, walkthrough display of a typical 1940s American home, will be on site. In addition, authentic World War II-era artifacts will be on display. The event is free for the public to attend. Donations are always welcome. Readers who have questions may call the foundation at 717-627-4636.

Mission Accomplished …. Lesson Learned BY ANN MEAD ASH

After four years of working toward her Gold Award, recent Warwick High School graduate and Girl Scout with Troop 70256 Abby Musser completed her “One Swing at a Time” project in July and received her Gold Award in August. Along the way, she learned how to overcome fundraising and other obstacles and learned a few lessons that have already influenced her choices for the future. Musser’s project involved installing an adaptive swing in Lititz Springs Park to make it possible for children with special needs

Former Manheim Township supervisor and former Pennsylvania state Rep. Roy Baldwin remembers when Boettcher House Museum in Landis Woods became a township facility in 1996. “We had three objectives for the museum,” recalled Baldwin, who listed preserving natural history, renting the facility, and holding events. In 1999, one of those events, an annual art show, kicked off. “I promoted that because I had good relationships with local artists,” said Baldwin, who mentioned Lisa Madenspacher, See Art Show pg 3

Brace yourself for the “silver tsunami.” That’s a term used to describe the predicted dearth of workers in the future as the current workforce ages into retirement. Through an innovative initiative, the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center (LCCTC), is equipping students to prepare for their future. For more than 50 years, LCCTC has provided opportunities for high school and adult education, career training and workforce

development. The Pathways to Careers and Higher Education program just launched for the 202122 school year and will build a bridge between secondary and postsecondary education. It serves as an umbrella over the various postsecondary opportunities available to students, said Amber Kreger, director of higher and continuing education. “This is a way to better serve our community of students by offering a pathway from what they are learning in high school directly into what

LCCTC recently launched the Pathways program.

they will learn in our adult program,” she explained. “The students are already in the same buildings as our adult learners. They cross paths often, so we thought, ‘Why not offer a program where the students can benefit from what we already do here?’” Under Pathways, students may earn Technical Institute in the High School credits, receive postsecondary credit transfers, participate in dual enrollment or earn credits through the state Students Occupationally and Academically Ready (SOAR) program. Pathways will allow students in senior-year programs the opportunity to accumulate credits that will follow them into higher education with partnering institutions. Higher learning partners include all community colleges throughout Pennsylvania as well as Delaware Valley University, Pennsylvania College of Technology and more. Students will also be able to work toward earning their Associate in Specialized Technology (AST) degree. “I’m really excited about what we’re doing with our associate degree programs,” said Mike Moeller, director of curriculum.

LCCTC allows credit transfers for students in its high school automotive technology program into its AST associate degree program, and plans are in the works to add the school’s other two associate degree programs - veterinary technology and dental hygiene - to the credit transfer program as well. Moeller noted that programs like the ones offered at LCCTC are meeting the needs of today’s employers while also serving the students. “Over the last few years, schools have really begun to the see the value of career and technology education as a way to earn a great living and learn skills, but with very minimal college debt,” he said. “There are so many opportunities for jobs in these fields as well.” Kreger agreed, adding that Pathways allows students to come in with a specific plan and the end result in mind. “There is a set goal and finish line,” she said. “That goal may change slightly as they go through their program, but there is a finish line, and we are offering students ways to get there.” For more information on LCCTC or Pathways, visit https://lancaster ctc.edu.

artwork. Each attendee will receive a ticket as he or she enters the event. Refreshments will be available for purchase from the Neffsville Mennonite Church youth group. Both admission and parking are free. John Beaumont, who organizes the musical entertainment for the show, has put together a lineup that brings back a number of favorites from past events. Musical groups will include the Sorrentino Jazz Band at 9:30 a.m. and Stone Soup String Band playing old-time mountain music at 11:15 a.m. At 1 p.m., the Steve Barth Band will play rock tunes and soft rock covers. At 2:45 p.m., TJ Earley, of which Beaumont is a member, will play originals and covers of blues, rock, and soft rock songs. Attendees may enter the event grounds from either Hillside Lane or Meadow Lane, located off Lititz Pike in Neffsville.

and their families to enjoy the playground equipment. By early 2020, Musser had raised about $5,000 of the approximately $15,000 she needed to complete the project by selling bracelets and putting donation jars in several Lititz-area businesses. Then, COVID-19 restrictions hit, closing down the businesses and the main fundraising sources. “I felt guilty asking businesses in Lititz to contribute to a project,” shared Musser, so in May of 2020, she went to work cleaning up yards. “It’s something I enjoy a lot,” said Musser, who asked a minimal amount for whatever work she did, but received more from many customers, raising more than $1,000 from the work. Those who knew why she was raising the funds told her stories of relatives and friends who had children with special needs and how they would appreciate the swing. When businesses reopened, she held a community cup day. The jars she put at the businesses yielded about $100 each toward the total. When Musser was on the news talking about her project, her website donations increased. By this summer, Musser was close to her goal. She had enough to cover the swing and the installation, and she had already paid for the building permit. When Lititz Springs Park donated $1,400 worth of mulch, Musser only had to cover the expenses of adding a stone path from an existing path to the area of the swing. By July 21, she was able to open the swing for use by area children. To make sure the swing is used properly, she is working with the park grounds crew to add signage to the equipment.

With the swing completed, Musser had only to complete her Gold Award paperwork, and on Aug. 8, she and her family gathered at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ on Broad Street in Lititz for her pinning ceremony. Overcoming the challenges of the project gave Musser insight into her future. “It has introduced me into the business world, and I discovered my love for it,” said Musser, who noted that she was required to take part in marketing, financing, and management activities to reach her goal. “I got to manage this whole project and see it come to life, so I am majoring in business management at Chatham University in Pittsburgh,” said Musser, who moved into her dorm in mid-August. Musser also learned some lessons about herself. “I am such a planner, but through COVID, I have learned that sometimes it’s OK to be spontaneous and just see where life takes you,” she said.

Suk Shuglie, and Andy Smith in that group. “They helped plan it all.” Baldwin’s interest in art began when he was attending Cornell University and met his wife-to-be. “I started going to art history classes,” said Baldwin, who later visited art museums worldwide. Baldwin’s efforts to launch the local show were successful, and this year, the 21st annual Landis Woods Outdoor Fine Art Show will be held rain or shine on the Boettcher House Museum grounds, 2369 Lititz Pike, Neffsville, on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. An art walk, which will feature the work of local high school artists, is planned from noon until 3 p.m. on the day of the show. Items that artists and craftspeople will sell at the show include jewelry, mixed-media pieces, abstract art, landscapes, watercolor paintings, ceramics, and pottery. This year, an artist who specializes in body painting will be present to take appointments. The show is billed as a child-friendly and petfriendly event. Madenspacher, who has traditionally participated in the show but is skipping this year, said that her daughter, artist Adrienne Judge, would take part. “She has always had artistic flair,” said Madenspacher, displaying a metallic abstract painting by Judge. “This year … she dove into (her creative side) headfirst, and she is doing great.” Paris Llanso has participated for many years. The local artist, known for her prima impasto method, displayed a commissioned piece of a llama, a rabbit, and a bird. “I am working on a similar piece for the show,” said Llanso. One of artist Irene Miller’s works is a precise Lancaster County farm scene based on a property located north of Lititz. “I do watercolor, (but) I don’t do the traditional watercolors,” explained Miller, meaning that her work does not have the fluid appearance often associated with watercolor. Echo Valley Art Auction Will Showcase Local Works

20th Anniversary

SALE!

Members of the Echo Valley Art Group have a passion for their craft, but they also have a problem. Years of creating art has created an overabundance of artwork and limited storage space. To remedy the issue, the members host an annual art auction not only to clean out their studios, but also to provide the public with access to affordable, quality art. This year’s Echo Valley Art Group Art Auction will be held on Sunday, Sept. 19, at Rader Park, 1899 Apostle Way, Lancaster. The grounds will open at noon for browsing, and the auction will begin at 1 p.m. “The auction is a fun, relaxed event,” said Carol Toner Shane, an artist with Echo Valley. “It’s a nice afternoon to enjoy art in a beautiful setting.” Hundreds of works by 20 artists will be up for auction at the event. Artists will be on site with their art, and Shane encourages attendees to talk to them about their work. “Every item will be marked with a minimum bid, and a lot of the art goes for the minimum bid,” Shane explained. “Some gets hyped up and there’s a lot of competition between bidders, so that’s always fun, too.” Along with the auction, the event will feature live music and a free

children’s art project from 12:30 to 2 p.m. for those ages 6 to 12. “Susan Ulrich, the new high school art teacher at Lancaster Catholic High School, will be working with the kids on the project,” Shane said, noting that the project will keep children occupied while parents browse the artwork. The event will also include food for purchase. Echo Valley is a group of professional artists who meet regularly and exhibit art together, Shane said. “We currently have 23 members, and our membership is limited to 25,” she stated. “We have a wide range of artists in our group. Our youngest member is in her 20s, and our oldest is in his 90s.” Members include Ann DeLaurentis, Rob Evans, Becky Blosser, Dick Whitson, Brant Schuller and Susan Gottlieb. The group holds the auction not

only to get art into the hands of more people, but also to support young artists in the county. Proceeds will support local youth art exhibits and will fund events such as bus trips to major museums for local students. Shane said the event is a casual, low-key way to enjoy art. “There’s no pressure,” she explained. “You can just come to look around, eat lunch and talk with the artists. We love talking to people about our art.” The event is also a way to showcase original art that’s affordable, she said, adding, “We started this event because we believe as artists that original art enhances your life and makes your life better.” For more information on the Echo Valley Art Group Art Auction, visit www.echovalleyartgroup.com.

This will be the first year that club members Mary Anne and Scott Lewandowski chair the car show. “I’m most looking forward to seeing it all come together,” stated Mary Anne. “Hopefully we will get a good turnout and raise a lot of money for the Clare House because there is a great group of people over there.” Registration will open at 9 a.m., and the show will begin at 11 a.m., with an awards ceremony at about 3 p.m. Owners of General Motors vehicles - specifically Chevrolet, Saturn, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Buick, Cadillac, GMC, Hummer, and Holden - are welcome to participate. Registered vehicles can be cars, trucks, vans, SUVs, antiques, classics, hot rods, and street rods.

“It’s fun to see all the cars, and it supports a terrific cause,” said Mary Anne. Brethren Disaster Relief Auction Posted

Pig Iron Fest Will Celebrate Local History

After a year’s hiatus because of COVID, the 44th annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction (BDRA), will be held at the Lebanon Valley Exposition Center, 80 Rocherty Road, Lebanon, on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 24 and 25, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided over $17 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. Funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding from disasters from earthquakes in Haiti to a tornado in Campbelltown. Separate auctions will include the general auction, the children’s auction, the quilt auction, the theme basket auction, the silent auction, the heifer auction, the coin auction and two pole

Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A children’s store will offer gently used items, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals. Weather permitting, there will also be free barrel train rides and pony rides for a nominal donation. There will be an area for vendors of crafts and art objects and a farmers market with fresh produce and baked

goods, including homemade pies. Amish doughnuts and Amish soft pretzels, both homemade on-site, will be available. Artisan Alley, located in the West Hall, will be a collection of juried artisans. It will feature specialty coffees, German pastries, artisan bread, handmade pottery and various artists. To find out more about the auction, visit www.brethrenauction.org, call on the day of the auction at 717-723-6863 or pick up an auction booklet at many local retailers.

inspired jewelry,” Snow said, adding that another vendor will offer crafts inspired by local Native American tribes. “We’ll have a blacksmith and a guy who uses what we call a ‘putt-putt’ engine, or an engine dating from the early 1900s, to mix ice cream.” Snow noted that while the festival is traditionally held adjacent to the Musselman Vesta Iron Furnace, this year’s event will take place in a new venue. “This year will be a little different, but we are still going to focus on history,” he said. “We’ll have some displays about the pig iron industry, and we’ll be doing tours of a historic farm on the property.” The Pig Iron Fest is a way to honor the history of the region.

“This is a day that’s all about fun, food, entertainment and history,” said Marcus Snow, describing the Pig Iron Fest and Car Show. The event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at East Donegal Township Chickies Creek Day Use Area, 1467 Long Lane, Columbia. The event will feature a car show, with categories including classic, antique and street rod cars. “We will have 12 trophies in different categories for the winners,” Snow stated, adding that people can register their cars on the day of the event. The Pig Iron Fest will feature crafters, artists, a food court, a kids’ zone, live entertainment and history tours. “Our kids’ zone is always very popular,” Snow remarked. “We’ll have lots of activities, including a hayride, crafts and pumpkin painting.” Live music will be performed by Tim Rinard, and juggler Chris Ivey will also entertain. Exhibit Features Work From Mount Gretna And Beyond After several months of construction at United Zion Retirement Community, the United Zion Art Gallery has reopened with an exhibit of Mary Kopala’s watercolor and pen and ink pieces and Dave Adams’ photography. The exhibit will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through Thursday, Sept. 30. Kopala’s watercolors were created by focusing on negative space and using Mount Gretna as their subject. The pen and ink drawings were inspired by her travels in Provence, France, with its picturesque hill villages. Kopala was raised in Lebanon County and recently

retired to Lititz. She has a bachelor’s degree in art education from Penn State University, a master’s degree in counselor education and a doctorate in counseling psychology. She also studied at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design in Lancaster. She was a founding member of Gallery at La Cigale in Mount Gretna. The photography that Adams is exhibiting includes selections from three different projects. One group is a collection of photographs taken at the Centre County Grange Fair with the intent of capturing the night life of the fair. A second group consists of images of buildings,

homes and churches in and around Mount Gretna and Lebanon County. Another collection includes photographs taken in the streets and markets of southern France. Adams is retired from higher education research. His entire life he enjoyed photography; several years ago he took more formalized training and coursework. All Art Gallery visitors will be screened and are required to wear a mask covering their nose and mouth. Artwork is available for sale.
