GOTR To Screen Film Focused On Anxiety Free Link To Connect Families To “Angst” BY ANN MEAD ASH

Sarah Yohe, development director with Girls on the Run (GOTR), has an analogy concerning the different types and levels of anxiety people are feeling in relation to the pandemic. “We are all in the same storm, but we all have our own individual boats with their own holes in them that we are trying to keep plugged to stay afloat,” she said. To address that anxiety and provide a service to Lancaster-area GOTR members, the organization is providing a free link to the film “Angst: Raising Awareness Around Anxiety” Thursday through Saturday, Oct. 8 to 10. The initial live event will begin at 7 p.m. on Oct. 8. “The GOTR team will open up the evening by sharing our mission and our reasons for hosting this event,” said Yohe. Following the opener, the 56-minute documentary will be shown, and

then a live, half-hour discussion with approximately four panel members from related fields, such as psychology and pediatrics, will be held. Audience members will be able to submit questions to the panel. During the next two days, GOTR members and their families will have the option to watch the entire event via the link. The documentary, which was produced by IndieFlix, utilizes interviews with children and teenagers to explore the facets of anxiety and how it impacts relationships, along with offering possible solutions. Olympic athlete Michael Phelps is interviewed, as are mental health experts. “‘Angst’ opens up the conversation about anxiety,” said Yohe, who added that the film fits with the curriculum of the weekly GOTR team meetings. “We provide a really safe space for our girls to sit and talk about their emotions and name their emotions,” she said. “When we saw this documentary, we realized that this is a (way to) engage our See Film pg 4

The running segment will be held in the grass area adjacent to the rec center parking lot. Children ages 5 to 7 will swim one length of the pool, bike two laps, and run a quarter-mile. Those ages 8 and 9 will swim two lengths, bike three laps, and run a quartermile. Youngsters ages 10 and 11 will swim three lengths, bike four laps, and run a half mile. Financial support helps provide shirts, water, and goodie bags, along with scholarship funds for

children in need who wish to participate. Along with sponsorships, coupons, a small product or snack sample, water bottles, and other small items for the goodie bags will be appreciated. Generally, about a dozen volunteers are needed, but Ababou said that will change this year. “We will need more volunteers,” said Ababou. About a dozen rec center staff members and up to 40 volunteers from the community will work together to time swimming, running, and cycling. “We need more folks from the community,” Ababou noted. Individuals who would like to sponsor the event or volunteer may call Ababou at 717-626-5096, ext. 239, or email Simon Ababou@lititzrec.com. Those wishing to participate may register by calling the rec center, visiting www.lititzrec.com, or stopping by the front desk. COVID-19 safety protocols have affected the event, but Ababou believes the triathlon can still be held with a focus on the safety and health of participants and volunteers. The number of participants has been lowered from a maximum of 110 to 70 in keeping with Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines. Everyone in attendance will be asked to sanitize or wash their hands frequently, practice social distancing, and follow directions, including wearing masks. Athletes are asked to wear masks when not taking part in an actual event. One parent or spectator per child may attend the swimming event. Social distancing should be observed during registration, while the athletes are being marked for timing purposes, and during T-shirt pickup. Youth participants will begin the event with a swim in the indoor rec center pool. This year, they will enter the pool in waves in order to limit the number of students in the pool at one time. The bike portion of the event will be divided into age groups,

Film from pg 1 community in a conversation that is so important to have right now.” “The film (seeks to) normalize the conversation (about anxiety),” said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “It makes it feel that it’s OK to talk about this because everyone experiences it.” Johnson noted that with teams meeting in a variety of ways this fall, including virtually and in environments where it is safer to socially distance, the organization wanted to do more. “We feel such a sense of responsibility to the hundreds of girls we would normally have in our program this fall,” she said. “(We asked), ‘How can we reach them in a way that is important and relevant?’” Realizing the film could have an impact, GOTR chose to offer the screening. Area families who wish to register to watch the film may do so for free at www.gotrlancaster.org. A few days before the event, GOTR will send registered parties a link to the online event. In addition to the link, families will receive a discussion guide they can use to follow along. “IndieFlix has also provided pandemic tips for parents to help them deal with kids’ anxiety,” said Yohe. Because there are only a limited number of links available, organizers encourage GOTR members and families to register early. Sponsorships are being sought, and opportunities to donate will be offered at registration. “ We are calling this a Thoughtful Fundraiser,” noted Yohe. This is not the first time GOTR has offered a film on a culturally significant topic with a panel discussion to its members and families. In January, the organization screened “LIKE - A Documentary About the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives and the Effects of Technology on the Brain” at the Ware Center in Lancaster. GOTR administration felt that this was an apt time to repeat that type of event, but this time in a virtual format. “When we have a pandemic, which we have all never experienced (before), we have to look at things differently,” said Johnson. “This needs to be part of what we do for our community.”

Pork Barbecue To Benefit Mount Hope NRC way of donations coming into Mount Hope goes right back to the residents,” said Wilson. “We are not a fancy facility, but we are a warm, familyfriendly inviting community.” Not only does Mount Hope have a history of caring for seniors in its foundational roots dating back to 1969 as the Dunkard Brethren Church Home, but Mount Hope accepts senior applicants regardless of their ability to pay for the cost of their nursing care. As part of an effort to serve seniors with lower incomes, Grace Point Church of the Nazarene purchased the Dunkard Brethren Church Home at 3026 Mount Hope Home Road, Manheim, in 2007. The building soon was filled with seniors and

disabled older adults who needed nursing care. Today, as it was in past years, Mount Hope continues with this foundational mission. “The mission of being able to provide affordable, quality nursing care to those families who have loved ones in need and find themselves on lower fixed incomes is something only made possible through the support and generosity of our community,” Wilson said. “It takes an entire community of people, interacting together with Mount Hope, to ensure that this unique nursing care service continues for our aging population.” For more information, readers may call 717-6656365 or visit www.mthope nazarene.org.

Spencer, along with his family, which consists of his parents, Jen and Sean Browne, and his brother, Jayden, home from college in Minnesota, joined forces with volunteers Michelle Simon and Deb Miller and fellow students Jayna Ribner and Henry Willis to form the Lancaster chapter of Pandemic of Love. The grassroots, nonprofit organization connects those in need with those who have something to give. It has more than 650 volunteers nationally and, as of late June, had matched nearly 190,000 donors with those in need for $25.1 million in transactions. Pandemic of Love was founded in Florida by Shelly Tyglielski. “She started it for her community,â€? said Jen, who noted that the idea spread quickly and soon became a global network. Jen shared the story of the nonprofit’s founding with her family, and by late May, she had contacted Tyglielski through www. pandemicoflove.com. By early

organization has fielded requests for help with groceries, fuel, and medication. She said gift cards for those items are tremendously helpful. One recipient had a service dog that was ill and needed help with vet bills and to purchase special food. When a donor has food to give away, Jen turns to the caterer Scarlet Runner to help distribute it to the recipients. Even as the state has reopened, Jen said that many residents continue to be affected economically for a variety of reasons. “Some people have not been able to go back to work because their employer is not going to reopen, but also a lot of

people (have) anxiety (that) is preventing them from going back, she explained. Because there are only two chapters in the state, Jen and the other volunteers have fielded requests from tiny towns as well as from Philadelphia. They ask donors if they have a preference for keeping donations local. Spencer noted that Pandemic of Love is unusual because it is completely run by volunteers who do not actually handle the donations. “Pandemic of Love has no overhead costs, he explained. “There’s no money involved in the matching process. People come to us and we document everything.

June, all the Lancaster volunteers had been trained via an online forum, and the Lancaster County chapter was ready to let the public know of its existence. Jen lauded Spencer and Jayna and their expertise in social media for helping to get the word out. “I really credit the young volunteers with making this as successful as it’s been, said Jen. “They know how to tag the right people. We are fortunate to have young volunteers who know what they’re doing. Thanks to the volunteers’ hard work, by early July, the Lancaster Chapter had matched 30 donors with recipients. “What was shocking in the beginning is that I had so many donors who were interested, recalled Jen, noting that at one point she had more donors than people in need. “I was so impressed with that, she said. Jen explained that Pandemic of Love focuses on putting together the puzzle pieces of donors and recipients. “We look at what someone wants to give and try to connect people who are a good fit for each other, she said. “So if (someone can’t pay a) bill for $150 and we have someone who has $150 to give, I connect those and then they pay the bill directly. In addition to utility bills, the

Giant and Martin’s pharmacies offer several types of flu shots for children, adults and seniors. Most insurance plans cover flu shots at $0 copays, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists, subject to state regulations. No appointment is needed for the in-store and drive-up vaccinations. To find the nearest Giant or Martin’s pharmacy,

readers may visit www.giant foodstores.com or www. martinsfoods.com or download the free Giant or Martin’s Pharmacy app. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu vaccination. While the CDC recommends flu shots for everyone over six months, certain groups of people are at greater risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over 65, children under 5, those with asthma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.

Live Story Time Returns BY ANN MEAD ASH

The grass was still covered with bright dew drops, but that did not deter families from placing their blankets at carefully spaced green flags, which indicated safe social distancing. The sounds of nearby construction, traffic noise, and the occasional buzz of a passing airplane punctured the quiet morning, but Amy Moyer and Shannon Richard, coordinators of the Lititz Public Library Backyard Storytime on Sept. 1, were armed with a microphone and speakers to cut through these sounds. By 9:30 a.m., several mothers with young children had laid their blankets on the grass. In spite of the few drops that fell from the sky every now and then, Moyer and Richard stood on the raised stone patio at the back of the library. “ Welcome, everyone,” proclaimed Moyer into the microphone. “We are so happy you’re here and that you have chosen to come and have some fun at the library today.” She introduced Richard and noted that attendees are asked to wear their masks from the time they arrive until the family is seated. Story time opened with the song “Alabama, Mississippi” by Jim Gill. Moyer, Richard, and the family members on the grass sang and clapped along and shook their hands in time to the music as the lyrics directed. W hen the song finished, Moyer directed each family to white bags located at their designated spots. “There’s one for each family,” she said. “Pull out the book ‘Bugs! Bugs! Bugs!’ (It’s) a gift for your family from the library. The book was selected to be part of this year’s Pennsylvania One Book, Every Young Child Campaign.” Moyer

encouraged the families to follow along as she read from Bob Barner’s book that talks about fluttering butterflies and spotted ladybugs. The reading was followed with a “buggy” song, “Shoo, Fly, Don’t Bother Me.” The lyrics suggested the children jump like frogs, flap their arms to mimic a bird taking off, and crawl like a bug. Richard read the second book. “Our next book is a big book,” she said, gesturing to Moyer, who stood to Richard’s right holding up the enormous book. “The title is the name of the book, (which is) ‘In the Tall, Tall Grass,’ and the author is Denise Fleming. She wrote the story,” Richard explained to the children. Richard read to the gathering about all the things found in the tall grass, while Moyer turned the oversized pages so children could see the brightly colored pictures. The story explored the tall grass and pointed out occupants including ants and snakes and moles. “Can you snap like you’re catching a fly with your tongue?” Richard asked. The book ended by saying “goodnight” to the tall grass, and Richard asked the children if they could

pretend to be going to sleep. The group then sang “The Ants Go Marching,” counting up to four by four, before Moyer read “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” by Iza Trapani. The children heard about how the tiny spider climbed a pail, a rocking chair, and a maple tree before spinning a web and resting in the sun. The reading was followed by singing the song about the same spider, which included teaching the American Sign Language sign for “spider.” “Open up your hands, cross them over, and grab pinkies together so that your fingers become spidery legs,” said Moyer. The gathering closed before 10 a.m. with a special goodbye song that included verses that say so long to the girls, the boys, and all the

wiggle worms. Moyer and Richard called goodbye to everyone and the group on the lawn responded with applause. The library plans to hold Backyard Storytimes on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9:30 and 10:30 a.m. each day. The events are weather dependent and open to children of all ages with caregivers. Readers who wish to attend must register prior to the event by calling 717626-2255 or visiting the library. A Zoom Storytime with Richard will be held at 10 a.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays beginning Sept. 14. Readers who wish for their children to take part should email srichard@lititz library.org to register.

More details and officials rules are available at www.giantfood stores.com/1for100. With each bag retailing for 99 cents, 50 cents from the sale of each goes to local food bank partners. Through Thursday, Sept. 24, whenever customers buy $20 in participating products from a variety of food manufacturers, $5 will be donated on their behalf to Feeding America. Readers may visit www.giantfoodstores.com or www.martinsfoods.com to learn more about the Giant Company’s ongoing hunger relief efforts, which include its signature Meat the Needs program, which has donated more than 10 million pounds of meat that would otherwise have gone unsold to food banks.

• Wash your hands often

• Maintain social distance — 6 feet

These methods have been shown to work. So let’s keep at it. Thank you for doing your part.
