Hope.Inspire.Love. talks the talk, walks the walk
BY JEFF FALK BY JEFF FALKSome folks inject a lot of time, effort and money into their motor vehicles. Given how much they’ve put into them, you can’t really blame them for wanting to show off their investments.
Those will be the people displaying their prized vehicular possessions
when United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC) hosts its annual Rock’n Car and Motorcycle Cruise on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 3 to 7 p.m. on its campus at 722 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz. All proceeds from the event will go toward UZRC’s benevolent fund.

couldn’t generate financial resources without generous donors, and nonprofits couldn’t perform their philanthropic work without fundraisers.
Four months after presenting its Hope for Freedom Gala, Hope.Inspire.Love. will conduct the second of its two yearly fundraisers, Freedom Walk, on Saturday, Oct. 7, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Musser Park, 135 N. Lime St., Lancaster. Hope.Inspire.Love is in its eighth year of battling human trafficking
and sexual exploitation, and the event is designed to raise money for the fight against human trafficking and to raise the awareness of its effects.
“Fundraising is vital. It’s the glue,” said Hope.Inspire.Love CEO and president Amy Thurston, who founded the organization with her husband, Steve. “Nonprofits rely on the community. We need their support financially. The survivors know the community is behind their healing, and we’re in the backyard of the community. I literally am sitting here every day thinking, ‘We could do so much if we had more funding.’”
The Freedom Walk is a 2-mile walk carried out silently through the streets of Lancaster city, beginning and ending in Musser Park. In 2022, the walk raised $20,000 for the mission of Hope.Inspire.Love., and this year, Thurston is hoping to raise that and $5,000 more.
“We walk on the sidewalk, in single file, in silence,” said Thurston. “There’s something bold about silence. Actions don’t need words. That’s why we do it.”
“It’s a next step for people to learn about our organization,” Thurston continued. “People are
BY CATHY MOLITORISGreat things happen when women on a mission get together.
Lancaster County Women for Good formed last year with the goal of raising money for local nonprofits. So far, the group has donated more than $23,000, with 284 women contributing to the effort.
Most recently, the organization presented a check for $7,000 to Arch Street Center at Lancaster County Women for Good’s quarterly Gather & Grant meeting. Located in
Lancaster, Arch Street Center provides support and services for adults living with mental illness.
Lancaster County Women for Good began as an outreach of Grapevine, a social giving platform that brings people together for philanthropic work. “Grapevine initiated a bunch of groups in different areas of the country and from that point handed it over to local leadership,” said founding member Anna Horst. She’s joined by the local leadership team of group host Joelle Terranova and See Connections pg 2
event coordinators Susan Klapkin and Kirstin Knopp.
Each local group sets its own fundraising parameters. For the Lancaster group, women are asked to commit to giving a minimum of $50 per quarter. In the weeks leading up to the group’s Gather & Grant meetings - which are held in February, May, August and November - members may nominate a nonprofit they’d like to support.
“The nonprofit can have a national or global reach, but it must serve our local community,” Horst explained. “It also must be a 501(c)(3) in good standing.”
From the list of nominees, members vote for their favorites, and representatives from the top three choices are invited to come to a Gather & Grant meeting to give a presentation about their organization and answer any questions. The group then votes on the recipient of that quar-
ter’s donation.
As of now, the organization raises all of its funds through member donations, but Horst said organizers are looking into sponsorships and fundraisers in the future.
Along with Gather & Grant meetings, which are usually held at Southern Market in downtown Lancaster, the group members also meet once a month for Girl’s Night Out.
“We’ll get together to support a local business, and it’s an extra bonus if the business is woman-owned,” Horst said. “It’s an opportunity to have fun, socialize, ask questions about our organization and meet other women.”
While most Gather & Grants and Girl’s Night Out events are held on the second Wednesday of the month, October’s Girl’s Night Out will be held on the third Wednesday of the month due to the Manheim Farm Show. It will happen at Horst Arts,
17 N. Main St., Manheim, beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 18.
For Horst, Lancaster County Women for Good has offered an easy way to give back to local organizations while also making friends.
“I love the idea of making philanthropy accessible to everyone,” Horst said. “I also like that it gives everyone an opportunity to meet like-minded women who have similar outlooks on
philanthropy.”
She said women who are involved with local nonprofits are especially encouraged to join. “It’s a great way to network and to meet potential volunteers or donors and get to know people who can support your organization,” she stated.

At Overlook, golf is as challenging as it is relaxing
BY JEFF FALKIt’s not just how hard you hit it. It’s not even just how far you hit it.
At Overlook Golf Course, a premium is placed on shot making. That’s what makes the local course a true test of a golfer’s abilities.
Located at 2040 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, Overlook Golf Course is a 6,110-yard test that plays to a par of 70 - 35 each on the front and back nines.
“We’re old,” said Overlook’s director of golf, Ken Ord. “We’re almost 100 years old, and we’re not like the modern golf courses, which have length. We’re on 105 acres, and that’s not a lot for a golf course.”
He noted that the course is known for its conditioning.
“Another one of our strengths is location,” he added. “We’re in the heart of Lancaster County.”
Overlook is one of eight public golf courses in Lancaster County and one of only two that are municipally owned. Operated and maintained by Manheim Township, Overlook Golf Course hosts nearly 39,000 rounds of golf each year, and its state-of-the-art driving range is used heavily
as well.
Overlook also serves as the home course for the Manheim Township and Warwick high school golf teams.
“It’s got to be one of the nicest municipally owned golf courses I’ve ever seen,” said Ord. “The best part of the golf course is definitely the greens. They were all redone 25 years ago, and there’s so much undulation (to them).”
“There are a lot of people who don’t know that Overlook is owned by Manheim Township,” Ord continued.
“We have a budget, and we present it to the township every year. I run it like my business, like I want to make money. It’s a great partnership between the golf course and the township.”
With five par-3 holes and three par-5 holes, Overlook Golf Course is relatively flat. But trouble does lurk in the form of sand, water and especially trees, and to score well, players must constantly concern themselves with ball placement.
“We’re a welcoming golf course,” said Ord. “We want a lot of people to play here. We want people to come here and enjoy themselves. It’s a fun golf course.”
Overlook Golf Course was
built in 1928 by Abe Dombach as a way to help promote the game of golf to everyone. In that way, Manheim Township has stayed true to the vision of the course’s founder.
“The township is always looking out for what’s best for Manheim Township residents,” said Ord. “The golf course fits right in with that. We’re here to support the res-
Event to explore World War II history
idents. We love when the residents come out to play.”
“We’re getting people from everywhere,” Ord added. “They’re not only playing golf here, but they’re also practicing. We’re trying to grow the game.”

The Lititz Historical Foundation, 137 E. Main St., Lititz, will host its annual World War II Day on Saturday, Sept. 23, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
In the Mary Oehme Gardens, located behind the museum buildings, the historical society will feature more than 20 World War II re-enactors; historical World War II items that were once owned, used, or worn by the soldiers who served; and information about Rosie the Riveter. “American Home
Front” will offer a full-size, room by room walk-through of a typical home during the 1940s. The Lititz Museum and Gift Shop will also be open.
Admission is by donation, with all proceeds benefiting the Lititz Historical Foundation. Guided tours of the 1792 Johannes Mueller House will also be available for a nominal fee. For more information, email info@lititzhistorical foundation.com.

the director of development at UZRC. “Like, ‘Look what I’ve got.’ They are beautiful cars.”
“The show also comes from a love of cars by our residents,” continued Keyser. “When you get to this stage of life, you don’t have cars on campus anymore. Car cruises are very popular things. It’s a big pull on people’s hearts because they like coming to see the cars. We’re hoping for great attendance at a great event for a great purpose.”
The event will feature celebrity judges, and prizes will be awarded to the top entries in various categories - classic, modern, muscle car, favorite paint, favorite
cycle, truck, oldest vehicle, most unique and family heirloom, as well as the grand showcase winner. The Rock’n Car and Motorcycle Cruise will also include food, along with live music from country and gospel singer John Schmid.
During the cruise, sponsored residents will be rockin’ in rocking chairs to raise additional money for the benevolent care fund.
“It’s going to be lots of fun,” promised Keyser. “There’s going to be excitement. Car enthusiasts love to come and see the car show. The residents love to participate in these events. Our campus is beautiful, and it’s a festive atmosphere. It’s
important to have these kinds of events connecting with the community.”
Some 80 vehicles - from hot rods to street cars, from hatchbacks to sedans, from cement trucks to motorcycles - are expected to be represented at the cruise. UZRC first began staging its car and motorcycle cruises in 2008, and since then, the show has doubled in entries.
“Some are local automobile buffs, and they actually look for car shows in the area,” said Keyser. “They may have a garage. They take great pride in either restoring vehicles or making that automobile extra special. They take great care of the cars, so they’re proud to
show them off.”
UZRC is hoping to raise $10,000 to help residents who have maxed out their financial resources. In 2022, $2 million of benevolent care was given to residents.
“We don’t want to turn someone out when their funds run out,” said Keyser. “This is what this is for. We just want to provide superior quality service. We encourage the independence of our residents. We encourage the dignity of our residents. We love our residents.”
For more information about the Rock’n Car and Motorcycle Cruise or to register, email Keyser at ekeyser@uzrc.org or call 717-626-2071.

This insight led her to realize that regardless of language or location, individuals with good manners, an open mind, kindness and courtesy have a
greater chance of success. Hartley is a certified etiquette expert with credentials from two nationally acclaimed etiquette schools. She holds business and children’s etiquette certifications from The Etiquette Institute in St. Louis, Mo., and a children’s etiquette certification from The Charleston School of Protocol and Etiquette in Charleston, S.C. Miniature golf fundraiser will benefit Junior Achievement
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALDJunior Achievement of South Central PA (JASCPA) will host its 32nd annual Putt for Education fundraising event on Friday, Oct. 6, at the Village Greens, 1444 Village Road, Strasburg. The day will include multiple tee times, and noon and 2:30 p.m. spots are currently available to purchase for a set price. Friday, Oct. 13, has been selected as the rain date. The proceeds of the event will support various programs that JA holds throughout Lancaster County and the surrounding areas.
Each tee time will include space for 24 teams to progress through 24 holes, and multiple holes will offer players a chance to earn prizes. One of the prize holes will challenge golfers to hit a ball into the sunroof of a car for a chance to win prizes such as gift certificates for the Village Greens and local businesses. JASCPA will accept registration for sponsors until the day of the event, and teams may sign up to play until the last week of September. Registration will include a grab-and-go lunch for all golfers and a gift bag of items that have been donated by local businesses.
The funds raised by Putt for Education will benefit multiple programs JA offers to students from kinder-
garten to 12th grade. Each program is held at schools free of charge and falls into one of the organization’s three target areas: financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship. JASCPA’s volunteers facilitate the programs and use their own life experiences to teach practical skills in classrooms throughout the area.
One of JASCPA’s financial literacy initiatives is REAL Life, which is a program offered to juniors and seniors in high school. Through REAL Life, students learn about budgeting by participating in various activities such as guessing the cost of items commonly purchased by adults. Students are also given scenarios that include a specific career and salary, and they are tasked with covering expenses like rent and utili-
ties without exceeding their budgets. “It’s really valuable for students to learn the cost of things as they prepare for adulthood,” said Kim Zech, JASCPA’s vice president of communications and events. “Our programs give kids an opportunity to ask questions and get real-world answers.”
To promote entrepreneurship and employment readiness in students, JASCPA hosts BizTown. The event involves a daylong interactive learning experience in a simulated town, where fifth- and sixth-grade students can operate a business such as a restaurant or bank. The goal of BizTown is to bridge the gap between what students learn in the classroom and what they will be tasked with in adult life.
During the 2022-23 school year, JASCPA offered pro-

“The reality is that (human trafficking) has affected all of us in the community in different ways,” said Thurston. “It takes a community to fight it. What we’ve realized is that a lot of people want to help. The Freedom Walk allows people to serve. This Freedom Walk has power.” Hope.Inspire.Love. seeks to combat sex trafficking and sexual exploitation through trauma-informed mentorship, outreach and awareness and prevention education.
“Our (mission) isn’t a short-term relationship; it’s a long-term solution,” Thurston said. “We started with prevention and education. But I said, ‘We’ve got to do more.’ As we’ve evolved, we’ve added more staff. We developed our mentoring
program and our job skills training. I think we’ve grown more than we expected.”
