A high-flying show like no other

Someof us are more in tune with nature than others.

Cryss Stacey enjoys a direct connection to it.

A graduate of Warwick High School, Stacey is a falconer and the owner of Edged Feather Experiences. Her passion and livelihood revolve around owning and caring for seven different species of birds of prey, but what she really is, is an advocate for nature.

“Growing up, I was always an outdoorsy kind of kid; you couldn’t get me out of the woods,” said Stacey. “But I wasn’t always allowed to have my own pets. I’ve always been drawn to them; I’ve always wanted to work with them. I didn’t even know birds of prey was a thing. When I first saw it, I was consumed by it.”

Edged Feather Experiences is one of the many unique attractions currently appearing at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire at Mount Hope Estate & Winery, 2775 Lebanon

Road, Manheim. Stacey stages three 30-minute shows each weekend day on the Ren Faire’s joust field, each featuring a different bird of prey or combination of birds.

I’ve got another bird that just loves to be around people; he thrives on attention. They are absolutely performers. They know their jobs really well.”

Stacey’s flock of hunters consists of Titus, a red-tailed hawk; Kasai, an African augur buzzard; Skyler, an African lanner falcon; Goose, an African tide crow; Wicket, a barred owl; Jack, a Harris’s hawk; and Sir Dante, a Eurasian eagle-owl.

The entertaining and educational shows are designed to display each species’ skills and talents as hunters, and the last five minutes of each show are used for audience questions and photos. When Stacey’s birds aren’t performing, they can be viewed on the grounds of Mount Hope Estate & Winery.

“I try to get the audience as close to the birds as possible, within reason,” said Stacey. “My goal is to give

“It is a very one-sided relationship,” said Stacey. “If I were to drop dead, they’d eat all the food and fly off. There would be no mourning. But I care deeply for the birds. I can’t tell you how much I’ve dedicated to them. Their care requires a well-trained hand.”

“It’s my job to give them as natural a life as I can - that they get to be birds,” added Stacey. “It’s also my job to make sure they’re well exercised See High-flying show

“This isn’t a handout,” said Amanda Reilly-Sokoli, executive director of the Pennsylvania Furniture Mission. “It’s a hand up.Our goal is to fill a hole and a need in the community. We work with existing organizations, and we support the whole family.”

Pennsylvania Furniture Mission opened in June in a warehouse off of Chestnut Street in Columbia.

“We provide a full household of furniture to people who need it,” said Pashk Sokoli, chief operating officer and Amanda’s husband. “People get to choose what they want. We have couches, tables,

chairs, dressers, mattresses, beds, lamps, small appliances. We give them the dignity of choice. Our goal is to convert a house into a home.” Although the 501(c)(3) organization is new to the region, its operating concept is well-established. Prior to relocating to central Pennsylvania, Pashk served as director of operations for the Chicago Furniture Bank, the largest furniture bank in the nation.

decided to launch their own furniture mission in Amanda’s home state.

“We wanted to work in a place where the help was most needed,” Pashk said, of the decision to start the organization in Columbia. From its warehouse, the Pennsylvania Furniture Mission can serve clients in five counties - Lancaster, York, Dauphin, Lebanon and Berks.

The organization relies on donations for its inventory, accepting gently used furniture from individuals as well as from companies and organizations who are closing or

transitioning to new items.

“We have standards for the furniture we accept,” Pashk said. “We won’t take anything with stains, rips or tears. If we don’t think we can use it in our home, we don’t take it.” All items are thoroughly cleaned with high-grade sanitizer, and many pieces are refurbished or refinished at the warehouse before they go out to a client’s home.

Pennsylvania Furniture Mission clients are referred to the organization by various community nonprofit organizations. Clients are able to come in person to shop for furniture

“Blessing of the Animals” service posted

Lititz United Methodist Church (LUMC), 201 Market St., Lititz, will host its 22nd “Blessing of the Animals” service on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 2 p.m. in the pavilion area. This special outreach service will offer an opportunity to bless family pets and celebrate their friendship. All kinds of pets may participate, and each will receive an individual prayer and blessing.

Pastor Jerry McGrath will deliver a short message during the service, and those who have lost a pet are encouraged to bring a photograph and place it on a special

remembrance table. Ashes of deceased pets will also be blessed, if desired. Following the service, treats will be served for pets and their people.

In the event of rain, the service will be held in the social hall. For more information, contact the church at 717-626-2710.

in the warehouse, or they can set up a virtual appointment.

The organization delivers the furniture to the client’s home, and Amanda and Pashk recently took out a loan to purchase a 16-foot box truck for deliveries, which is saving them time and money now that they don’t have to rent delivery trucks. They are looking for sponsors to help offset the cost of the new truck, and sponsors will be able to place a sticker with their logo on the truck.

So far, both Amanda and Pashk are volunteering in their positions with the Pennsylvania Furniture Mission. Their goal is to be able to

not only provide employment for people to drive the delivery truck and help with deliveries, but also earn a salary themselves.

For now, however, they are content with the strides they’ve made in a short amount of time.

“We believe in empowering people,” Amanda said, noting that their clientele includes anyone experiencing financial hardship, including people coming out of homelessness or incarceration. “Our goal is to get them established for future success.”

exhibition and celebration will be presented on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the downtown park.

Admission to the Lititz Parkwalk is free.

“It’s a very nice event,” said Lititz Art Association president Beth Kaylor Brunner. “It’s small. It’s more intimate. Not only do our patrons like it, but our artists like it as well. It’s kind of consolidated, and it’s a fun show.”

A total of 53 artists are expected to display their creations in wood, ceramics, photography, sculpture, painting, paper, jewelry and the fiber arts. The artists hail from the Lititz

area, Lancaster County and beyond.

“(The collection of artists is) a wide variety of ages and talents,” said Brunner. “We have young artists, while some are close to 80. Some have been creating for many years.”

Up to 3,000 visitors could pack Lititz Springs Park to view the artists’ wares.

“Everything is for sale,” said Brunner. “That’s the idea. This is to show the public what (artists) do and for them to sell their creations.”

“We do make money,” continued Brunner, “but this is an opportunity for (Lititz Art Association) to put on a show. We’re sponsors. The money

Church to host Community Fall Fest

Brunnerville United Methodist Church, 517 Pine Hill Road, Lititz (Brunnerville), will host its firstever Community Fall Fest on Saturday, Sept. 30, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The event will include children’s crafts and games, live music, a Grandma’s Attic, local craft and gift vendors, a gift basket giveaway drawing, and a silent auction

of locally donated prizes of all kinds. There will be many homemade foods, along with a bake sale and a selection of frozen meals and soups to take home.

The event will be held rain or shine, and everyone is welcome to attend. An event flyer can be found at www.brunnerville church.org.

will allow us to put on more shows and for us to put on shows at the Lititz Public Library.”

The Lititz Parkwalk is one of four public art exhibitions presented by the Lititz Art Association each season. The largest of the four is the Lititz Outdoor Fine Arts Show in July.

The local art association also sponsors its Holiday Gift Show in November and its Square Foot Art Show each April.

“The Parkwalk is more fine arts and crafts,” said Brunner. “It allows for more of a variety of mediums to be shown. This one is open to the public. Some others are member shows.”

The event began more than 20 years ago as the Lititz Porchwalk.

When it outgrew the porches of local residents, it was moved to Lititz Springs Park.

Last year’s show was canceled due to inclement weather.

“It was originally sponsored by Moravian Manor,” said Brunner, adding that when the organization decided to stop sponsoring it, the art association stepped in to host it. “We felt it was a good show. We didn’t want to see it disappear. We thought we could put it under our umbrella of shows. There is tradition with this show. In changing the venues, it brought in new artists.”

LAMS sudents to take part in Serve-A-Thon

Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) is making plans for this year’s Serve-A-Thon, the reimagining of a 37-year tradition formerly known as Trash-A-Thon.

On Thursday, Oct. 5, more than 300 students from kindergarten through high school will serve at various local organizations, bringing action to two of LAMS core values - “Serving is our strength” and “Community is our commitment.” Students will have the opportunity to engage with those outside of the school walls, gain exposure to a wide variety of careers and vocations and practice the message of 1 Peter 4:11, which is that serving through God’s strength brings praise to Him.

At a Serve-A-Thon pep rally, the students enjoyed watching and participating in a variety of relay races that incorporated serving. The students were told which organization each grade level will be partnering with and are excited to represent LAMS within the community.

In addition to helping the community, the event functions as a fundraiser to help meet LAMS’ operating budget and continue providing a quality,

Christ-centered education. Students ask members of the community to sponsor them for this day of service.
