For those who do not wish to dress in tropical attire, DeKarske suggested “business casual cocktail” attire. DeKarske added that the décor inside the venue will include sets that are designed to make the area resemble a courtyard. Activities and games at the event will be inspired by the culture of Cuba. The Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans do not meet on a regular basis. The two women who oversee the program, Jean Summers and Kathy Baker, coordinate picking up quilts and afghans from members and then see that the comforters are delivered to one of four area hospice centers to be distributed to veterans. However, on a summer morning, 14 members of the group gathered at Our Lady of Lourdes in New Holland to get better acquainted and discuss a possible future fundraiser that is being planned with the Upper Leacock Township War Memorial Association (ULTWMA), See Patriotic Stitchers pg 2

which helps to support the group. During the meeting, Baker and Summers explained briefly how the organization started about two years ago when a woman who was a social worker at a Lancaster hospice wanted to do something for veterans. The woman consulted her mother, and the pair thought making an afghan or quilt would be a good way to honor veterans. Both Baker and Summers signed on to help, and when the founder of the group could not continue running the organization, the duo took over, renaming the organization Patriotic Stitchers for Veterans. Each woman who attended the meeting was asked to introduce herself to the others and tell how she became involved. Ronnie Miller told the group that she quilts and was working with another group called Cradle Stitchers. “I have made 35 quilts for veterans,” she noted. Baker and Summers said that they will keep track of the number of pieces each group member turns in. Barbara Schrodi said that she has been making blankets for veterans for two years. “I find it very relaxing,” she said. “It’s creative, and you’re doing it for a good purpose.” Other members of the group noted that they love to crochet and that making the

blankets is a nice pastime. Each of the women brought a recently completed quilt or afghan to be given to a veteran. Each piece incorporated red, white, and blue in some way. When a blanket is donated, Baker or Summers affixes a label to it that reads: “Thank you for your service to our country. Made for you especially by,” followed by the maker’s first name and final initial and then the group’s name. Each blanket is photographed when it is received, and the photo is placed in an album. The organization now boasts about 35 volunteers, mostly recruited from area churches, but they are always in need of more volunteers who can crochet, knit, or sew. When the organization first began donating blankets, the creations went to one hospice in Lancaster and the Lebanon VA Hospital. Currently, the Stitchers are taking blankets to Ascera Hospice, Compassus, Caring Hospice Serves, and Hospice and Community Care. Group members are grateful for the help they receives from ULTWMA, but they will accept monetary donations and donations of red, white, and blue fabric or yarn, batting, or other material. Readers who would like to donate stitching time, funds, or material to the group may call 717-553-3161 or 484-888-3772.

Behn took a corner insert and lined her shot towards the right post where the ball zoomed through the outstretched leg of Daniels. Protecting the corner behind her, however, was Rockwell who got a stick on the ball and redirected it past the post and out of bounds. Despite several more scoring opportunities throughout the half, Warwick was not able to capitalize. Monday’s showdown with second place CV came down to the wire and beyond as the Buckskins were able to pull off the one-goal victory in overtime. Behn tied the game in the second half, matching Carli Eberly’s mark 17:08 into the first, but it was Claire Ortiz that put the game away at the 5:42 mark of the first overtime period. Warwick was out shot 10-6 with the Buckskins enjoying a 12-2 corner advantage as well. Healy turned away eight shots while Brooke Eberly recorded five saves for CV. FOOTBALL The muddied waters of Section One cleared a bit on Friday as Warwick (3-0, 6-0) handed Cedar Crest (2-1, 5-1) its first loss of the season and Manheim Township (2-0, 6-0) knocked off Wilson (1-1, 5-1) leaving only the Blue Streaks and the Warriors at the top of the standings. Only one will stand at the end of the week, however, as both teams square off Friday in a huge showdown in Lititz. Colton Miller tore through the Falcon’s defense to the tune of

Conor Adams was the main benefactor of those passes, catching seven for a whopping 197 yards and a touchdown which opened up the scoring in the second quarter when he hauled in a 34-yard score to put Warwick ahead 7-0. Cedar Crest answered shortly after when Cole Miller (10-138, TD) took a Chris Danz (13-174, TD) pass 72 yards to the one-yard line and then Tyler Cruz (20-81, TD) pounded it in for the

From there on out it was the Colton Miller show as the back rumbled for all four of his touchdowns in the second half. BOYS’ SOCCER Tied with Manheim Township (5-1, 7-3-1) in first place of Section One boys’ soccer, Warwick (5-1, 8-1-1) continued to pick up wins last week as they defeated Cedar Crest 1-0, Penn Manor 4-0, and Reading 3-0. Versus Cedar Crest it took almost 68 minutes for anyone to score a goal before Gavin Troop put up the lone score of the contest and the only one Warwick needed. Troy Castellitto recorded six saves as he and the Warwick defense shut the Falcons down for the entire game. It did not take that long for the Warriors to get on the board against the Comets as Ryan Ciano (8:00) and Trey George (10:00) gave Warwick the early 2-0 lead in the first half. In the second it was Kole Blauch (59:00) and

Gage Meckley (63:00) getting in on the fun as Castellitto and company again pitched a shutout. Traveling to Reading on Saturday the Warriors got all they needed in the first half as they put up three goals before the Reading defense settled in and kept Warwick out of the net the rest of the day. Luke Wealand (2) and Jacob Smith (1) provided the offense for the Warriors. TENNIS Warwick (0-7, 1-10) ended its season at home against Hempfield on Monday with a 7-0 loss to the Black Knights. Sarah Abraham and Audrey Hovan almost pulled off the upset in number two doubles versus Sabrina DeLeon and Kailah Cravey, but came up just short in a hard fought 9-7 loss.

quarters of play despite giving up 174 yards passing. GOLF Six golfers from Warwick’s section winning squad traveled to Foxchase golf club on Monday to participate in the L-L League golf championships with two qualifying for the District Three tournament which was held at Briarwood on October 1. Ethan Minnich and Brant Bomberger joined the group of 18 AAA golfers from the L-L League that made the cut. Minnich claimed the 13th spot when he carded a 12 over 83 with a 42 on the front nine and a 41 on the back. He struggled a bit through the first five holes shooting par on 2 and 4 but opening with a bogey on 1 and hitting a double on 3 and a triple on 5, but settled down a bit on the back where he was able to string together par on holes 13-15 and 17 before ending with a double on 18. Bomberger claimed the 16th spot by shooting a 13 over 84 with a 44 on the front before rebounding with a 40 on the back. Only hitting par on holes 6 and 7 on the front, he hit par on five

of the back nine holes while bogeying the other four. Meanwhile, Clayton Hartman and Tyson Mitchell both shot 86, Zach Stoyer came in at 91 and Matt Woolley carded a 103. VOLLEYBALL The lady Warriors came away with a hard-fought win over Penn Manor (3-4, 3-6) at home last Tuesday as Warwick (2-4, 2-5) went all five games before notching the 3-2 victory. Libby Smith led Warwick with 11 kills and eight aces, while Shannon Morrisey recorded 12 assists, Gwen Meyer had 23 digs and Elise Balmer blocked two. The Comets battled hard in the first set, but the Warriors held on for the 25-23 win. The two teams continued back and forth as Penn Manor won the second set 25-15 and the fourth 25-23, while Warwick took the third set 25-18 and worked the fifth for a 15-10 victory. SOCCER Warwick (3-3, 6-5) stayed in the middle of the pack in girls’ soccer as they picked up three wins last week to end up in fourth place with four more games to go. The Warriors beat Cedar

Crest 2-0 on Monday, then won 2-1 over Penn Manor in overtime on Thursday and ended the week with a 2-1 victory over Lampeter-Strasburg on Saturday. Warwick got a first half goal from Aubrey Williamson in the 13th minute and then Caroline Hipple added some insurance with a score in the 48th minute against the Falcons who struggled offensively the entire game. Warwick pounded out 10 shots on goal while the defense held Cedar Crest to only two and Kendall Morgan denied them both. On Thursday at Penn Manor and with the score tied at 1-1 late in the game, Warwick almost saw all of the hard work put into that score destroyed when a Comet free kick just barely went off the cross bar and out of bounds. The Warriors fell behind 1-0 on Ella Hart’s goal off of a corner kick in the 19th minute of play and still trailed midway through the second half when Jess Williamson fed her sister on a break. Aubrey collected the pass and beat both keeper Miriam Badri and

defender Zoe Acord for the tying goal in the 58th minute. In overtime, Jess again was able to send a perfect pass, this time to Chloe Zook who was able to beat Badri for the game winner in the 86th minute. Warwick outshot the Comets 10-9 and held a 5-3 advantage in corners while Morgan recorded nine saves on the night. Warwick was playing from behind once again on Saturday, this time against L-S, before scoring two unanswered goals to pick up the win. Danielle Dipace put the Pioneers up 1-0 in the 10th minute, but Juliette Delmotte tied things up when she found a way past keeper Olivia Vranich in the 31st minute. Vranich made eight saves for the Pioneers as Warwick out shot them 10-5, but it was Hipple that found the back of the net late in the second half with the game winner in the 79th minute. Morgan recorded four saves for the Warriors.
