Tapas Shindig to aid in fight against human trafficking

The battle against human trafficking is difficult and continual. North Star Initiative is seeking help to carry on the fight. It is that mission that is really at the heart of North Star Initiative’s annual Tapas Shindig. This year’s fundraising, awareness raising and relationship building event will be presented on Friday, Oct. 20, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Foundry48, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz. The event will begin with networking, a silent auction, tapas and mocktails, followed by a program and live auction, before concluding with dessert and coffee.

The theme for the event is “Light Up the Night. - Together we can illuminate the path to a brighter future for survivors of sex trafficking.”

“A lot of people ask me, ‘What can I do? I want to get involved,’” said North Star Initiative executive director Melinda Clark. “This is the time to come and get involved. It’s also partnering together to form a community where trafficking is unimaginable, where trafficking doesn’t exist. We encourage people to find their place in the battle. It’s a massive battle, but the battle is winnable. Want to know where to start? This is it.”

Tapas is a food trend that originated in Spain and involves serving a variety of appetizers and small servings. The evening’s ambiance will be enhanced by live music.

“The food is delicious, and it’s just one of the fun aspects of the evening,” said Clark. “We’re gathering with good people over good food for a good cause. It’s a feel of friends

Leather, tattoos, bikes, heart - and toys

From the outside looking in, the annual Lancaster County Toy Ride may look like just another group of bikers out for a day on the road. But it’s more than that. The event seeks to help fund Christmas gifts for children who may not otherwise receive many presents.

The 2023 Lancaster County Toy Ride will be conducted on Saturday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will begin and end at American Legion Post 34, 1388 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

A monetary donation or a donation of a toy with a set minimum value is suggested. All proceeds from the event will go to Lancaster County Toys for Tots.

“Sometimes people just see the (tattoos) and the leather,” said Jimmy Emig, the ride director and an elder for the tri-state chapter of Bikers for Christ. “I think some bikers get labeled just by the look. But you can’t judge a book by a cover. Open the book. If you do, you’re going to see a big heart. It’s one big heart on two wheels. That’s what a real biker is.”

CARE

What certain noises may indicate about your car

Automobiles have come a long way since their introduction more than 100 years ago. The cars of today are technological marvels, which has made both driving and maintaining a vehicle simpler in certain ways. For example, built-in diagnostic systems can now alert drivers when something is wrong with their car. Although that feature is undeniably useful, drivers can still benefit from learning to recognize issues by ear. Many problems that can affect a car

or truck produce unusual sounds, and learning what certain noises may indicate can help drivers detect problems as soon as possible.

- Rattling sound in a wheel well: Many people have mistakenly placed clothing in a dryer without realizing the clothing had spare change in the pockets. That mistake is immediately apparent once the dryer starts thanks to the unpleasant noise of coins bouncing off the interior of the machine. Drivers may

Warning signs that brakes are faltering

Drivers play a vital role in vehicle maintenance. Although diagnosing and fixing car problems is often best left to professionals, drivers who learn to recognize warning signs of various problems can prevent breakdowns and potentially costly repairs. Problems with the brake system are among the issues that drivers may learn to recognize.

Television shows and movies have lent credence to the notion that brake problems are marked by the sudden loss of a vehicle’s ability to stop. Although that can happen, warning signs of fading brake systems tend to be more subtle.

Certain noises are one of the signs that brakes may be failing. The most noticeable of these signs is a highpitched squeal that occurs when drivers apply the brakes. Grinding sounds and noises like scratching and scraping also warrant a visit to a brake specialist.

Drivers may also notice an increase in the distance a vehicle travels before it stops after the brakes are applied. This issue may or may not require a brake replacement. In fact, it sometimes indicates that brake fluid levels are low, which can be remedied quickly and easily. However, an increase in stopping distance is significant enough that it should be brought to the attention of a brake specialist immediately.

Another warning sign of brake problems is that the vehicle noticeably pulls to one side as it comes to a stop. This behavior indicates that one side of the brakes is malfunctioning while the other is working properly. Like other issues with brakes, this one requires immediate attention from a professional.

Issues with brakes can be costly and dangerous, so it is important that drivers learn to recognize the warning signs of brake problems.

hear a similar sound when behind one of their car’s wheels and wonder what’s behind it. Such a sound often indicates that there’s a loose lug nut inside the hubcap. This issue can arise when drivers don’t secure the wheel tightly after changing their own tire or if mechanics make the same mistake when rotating or replacing tires during a routine maintenance session.

- Squeaking sound: The auto insurance experts at Geico note that rear-wheel or four-wheel drive vehicles may produce a rhythmic squeaking sound when an issue arises with the universal joint. JD Power notes that the universal joint, often referred to as a U-joint, is part of the system that enables the rotating crankshaft in the engine of a vehicle to transfer that rotating motion to the rear wheels. U-joints get a workout whenever vehicles are driven, so they require maintenance, and a squeaking sound is one indicator that the U-joint needs to be addressed immediately.

- Squealing sound: A highpitched squealing sound typically

means the vehicle’s brake pads are worn out. However, Cars.com notes that if such a sound is only present when a car is first driven in the morning, it could just be surface rust being scraped off the rotors. After a few initial applications of the brakes, the sound might disappear. If it doesn’t, the vehicle will likely need new brake pads.

- Scraping on the windshield during rain: The scraping sound on a windshield when the wipers are in use should not be taken lightly or be interpreted as a sign that the rain is only falling lightly. In fact, that sound indicates the wipers are worn out, which means they’re not effectively clearing the windshield. In addition, the wipers could be scratching the windshield each time they produce this sound, ultimately necessitating a costly windshield replacement. Wiper blades can be replaced in a matter of minutes, so address this issue promptly.

Learning to recognize the sources of various vehicle noises can help drivers nip problems in the bud before they compromise the automobile and the safety of the people inside it.

How to conserve fuel without giving up driving

In today’s world, saving money is often a top priority for consumers, and bills paid at the gas pump are no exception. Drivers can follow a few simple tips to help save money on gas.

Lighten the load. How much weight is being carted around in a vehicle can directly affect the amount of gas it consumes. Remove any unnecessary items from the trunk or cargo area of a truck or SUV. Consider removing extra accessories, like roof racks or hitches.

Accelerate slowly. Resist the urge to gun it when beginning to move after a stop light or stop sign, as rapid acceleration wastes gas. Press the accelerator pedal gently to increase speed gradually and conserve fuel. Similarly, coast to a stop, rather than slamming on the brakes.

Don’t idle. Turn off the engine if the car will be idling for more than a minute. Modern engines do not need to be warmed up for more than 30 to 60 seconds, even when the weather is cold. Driving will warm up the car faster than idling while parked, provided the car is driven moderately until the temperature gauge shows the car has reached the right temperature.

Consider whether to use air conditioning or put the windows down. While it’s true that the air conditioning will drain fuel when in use, driving with the windows open makes the vehicle less aerodynamic by causing drag. Some experts recommended leaving the windows down during slower city driving and using the air conditioning for higher speeds on the highway.

Keep tires properly inflated. Poorly inflated tires can make a vehicle less efficient by causing more friction between tires and the roadway. Check the PSI rating for the tires and inflate accordingly. Many modern vehicles automatically alert drivers when tires are low on air.

Drive a consistent speed. When driving on the highway, switch to cruise control to maintain a consistent speed. This action can reduce drag, which in turn reduces fuel consumption.

Stick to a maintenance schedule. Maintaining a vehicle by getting routine oil changes, fluid checks and other simple upkeep helps a car or truck run properly, which can help conserve fuel.

These are just a few strategies drivers may employ to conserve fuel.

Clark is expected to address the gathering about North Star Initiative’s purpose, the work it has already accomplished and the struggles that lie ahead.

“I’ll have a chance to share North Star’s mission and vision to end trafficking and supporting those lives that have been affected by it,” said Clark. “I want to talk about how our common experiences can help the challenges our survivors face. People think it’s happening just overseas, but it’s not. It’s also happening here in Lancaster County. It’s the perfect opportunity to get an update on the state of it.”

That brotherhood is extensive and far-reaching. Between 500 and 1,000 bikers are expected to participate in the Lancaster County Toy Ride.

Emig said that the Lancaster County chapter of Toys for Tots’ operating budget for this year is $80,000. The purpose of the ride is to help provide some of those funds.

“$80,000 is a pretty big number,” said Emig. “There’s no goal besides trying to help offset the costs for Toys for Tots. I think bikers can lead by example and show what happens when people come together. We need to start coming together.”

The Lancaster County Toy Ride was first established 25 years ago. In the past, toys and funds were donated directly to local children in hospitals or children who were homeless.

This year marks the first time that the ride has been associated with Lancaster County Toys for Tots.

excited to show my family and friends the show. In Lancaster County, there’s not that many people performing this (Eastern and Central European traditional) music.”

Made up of mostly Pittsburgharea college students, the Tamburitzans boasts an 87-year history of showcasing the culture, dress, dance and music of Armenia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary, Slovakia, Ukraine and the Alpine regions, as well as Jewish groups, through a lively stage show. McSherry plays mainly the accordion, but also other musical instruments, for the group and also dances and arranges music for the performance.

“The accordion is often the backbone of these genres of music,” McSherry said. “It’s the instrument that often facilitates this music and makes it happen.”

From August to June, the Tamburitzans presents two or three shows each weekend at venues across the country.

“We are a folk music and dance ensemble that performs all throughout the country,” said McSherry. “Our whole goal is to bring these folk cultures to more people. It’s all the music. It’s all the costumes. By us performing, we’re able to give more people contact with these beautiful cultures.”

McSherry is currently in his third season of performing with the Tam-

buritzans, He expects to graduate from the University of Pittsburgh in 2025 with degrees in classics and French, and when he does, his time with the traveling performance troupe will come to an end.

“It is absolutely wonderful,” said McSherry of his experience with the Tamburitzans. “My dream when I was a little kid was to join this group and travel across the country. I get to talk to people at the end of shows and see what they thought.”

A decade ago, McSherry was exposed to the Tamburitzans for the first time at a show in Mount Gretna, and immediately, he was hooked. Already an accomplished musician, McSherry joined the group following a challenging audition process.

“When I saw them perform, I absolutely fell in love with them,” said McSherry. “I told my mom, ‘I want to do that one day.’”

McSherry’s professional goal is to become a college professor.

“I’ll always be performing music; I just don’t want it to be my job,” said McSherry. “It’ll be part of my future; it just won’t be my main income. But once you’re accepted into the Tambys, you’re a Tamby for life. It’s its own type of family. The Tamburitzans will always be a part of my life.”

To purchase tickets for the Tamburitzans’ performance, go to www.thetamburitzans.org/events /tickets.

Neighbors Sharing And Caring (NSAC) is designed to minister to women in the community. Each meeting begins with a light snack, song, devotions, prayer and ends with a message. This year’s theme is “Truth”. We will feature a variety of speakers with some interesting titles like, “What is Truth”, “Truth or Dare”, and “Truth or Consequences”. Feel free to join us for any or all programs. Babysitting is provided for all preschool children. Please call if you need more info. We would love to see you at our opening brunch on October 17th!
