One aspiration of the Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster chapter is to make inclusion a priority of the program. “Our goal is to provide access (to the program) by (making) GOTR available where girls gather after school, which is not always at school,” explained GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “Many times that’s in community organizations like Boys and Girls Club,” said Johnson. “We will be inclusive in ensuring that all girls feel the curriculum is relevant and reflects their life experience and that all girls feel listened to, valued, and part of a team.” With that in mind, a team of nine See Fall 5K pg 3

Tracey Strohecker, Annie Friedrichs, and other members of the Lancaster Christian Women’s Club first heard of a Stonecroft Ministries event called Story Marks two years ago, and the women were intrigued. “Story Marks (is about) women and the stories behind their tattoos,” explained Strohecker. “It will be a one-night gallery experience featuring photographs of local women and the stories of their hearts.” On Thursday, Oct. 18, area women are invited to the Barn at Overlook Commons, 605 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. to view the photos of up to 30 local women and to hear the testimonies of up to 10 women and how their tattoos are an expression of their Christian journeys. Light fare will be served. See Story Marks pg 2

In 1998, Kim Jureckson was asked to teach a modern dance class to adults, and she had an epiphany. “I looked around, and there were beautiful dancers in this class,” recalled Jureckson. “They all had professional (dance) training … and I thought there should be opportunity for these people other than coming once a week to take a class.” Jureckson’s revelation eventually became Grant Street Dance Company, a multigenerational organization especially for sincere dancers who have not chosen dance as a career. “Once you pass 21, what does a dancer who has had serious training and chosen not to pursue that as a career do? One goal of the event is to convey the message that tattoos are more than skin deep. “When you put something permanently on your body, it’s not on your body, it’s on your heart,” said Friedrichs. “It’s tattooed on to who you are.” Another aim is to break down stereotypes and focus on the universal. “We want to literally share our stories to support and encourage one another,” explained Friedrichs. “We are coming together as sisters to share the love of Christ with a sense of community.” She hopes to change perceptions in the process. “This is about women loving and needing each other (because) we were put in this world to help each other and reach out to each other,” she said. “There’s no judgment or criticism (because) we all need Jesus.” Other members of the Stonecroft Ministries Lancaster Christian Women’s Club hub who are organizing the event include Linda Johnston, Rebekah Christens-Persaud, Marlene Hall, and Joleen Yunginger. There is a nominal cost to attend the event. Readers who would like to attend may register at https://story-marks-lancaster .eventbrite.com. know Jesus. “This is about meeting a girl where she is and as she is with support and encouragement,” said Friedrichs. For Strohecker, the 24 months since she first heard of Story Marks has represented a personal journey that highlights a significant change in her outlook. When she first heard of Story Marks, she was skeptical of the idea. “The Lord began to work in my heart about being judgmental,” said Strohecker, who said that a sermon her pastor preached in the fall of 2017 on the subject of prejudices also affected her. “The Lord really spoke to me,” said Strohecker, who remembered Story Marks at that time. “I felt so convicted and passionate about this,” she added, noting that during a February vacation to Florida she decided to get a tattoo of two intertwining hearts and the words “Endless Love” to honor her marriage of more than 50 years. The transformation of Strohecker’s viewpoint has given her greater understanding for the reasons many women have tattoos. “I always thought it was about rebellion,” said Strohecker. “That was my perception. Once I understood there is a story behind them, I could see there’s a significant meaning.”

Jessica Wilson, who has coached the Blue Ball Elementary team, said that this year’s 5K will include a variety of activities for the girls and their running buddies. “The presenting sponsor, (a local) orthopedic and physical therapy practice, will create a temporary tattoo that reflects GOTR and the fall 5K,” said Wilson. In addition, the primping items that the girls may use before the race will include colored hair spray, face paint crayons, and bracelets they can inscribe. Wilson noted that Millersville University students take a special interest in the 5K. “All the Millersville University athletic teams send representatives on
Concert from pg 1 Jerusalem Lutheran Church, 36 Church St., Rothsville, will host Manor Winds in concert on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 3 p.m. The event is part of the church’s 2018-19 Music at Jerusalem Concert Series. Manor Winds consists of five professional musicians who rehearse in a historic farm house on Manor Street in Lancaster. The members of the woodwind quintet are Matthew Angelo, flute; Lauren Fairfull, oboe; Christy Banks, clarinet; Anne Nye, French horn; and Robin Plant, bassoon. Believing that quality chamber music should be readily available to the region’s diverse population, Manor Winds has performed in both traditional and nontraditional settings throughout
southeastern Pennsylvania. Highlights of the upcoming program will include an arrangement of Claude Debussy’s “Petite Suite,” originally written for piano four hands, as well as movements from “Aires Tropicales” by Paquito D’Rivera, a Cuban-born American saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer who plays and composes both jazz and classical music. A freewill offering will be received during intermission. Handicapped-accessible parking is available on the right side of the building, with elevator access through the glass entrance doors under the canopy. For more information, readers may call the church office at 717-626-8972. Pictured on front: Manor Winds will present a concert at Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Rothsville on Sunday, Oct. 28.
for GOTR Lancaster, expressed gratitude for those who volunteered to lead the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club team. “We have one staff member, one intern, and the father of a girl on another city team who stepped up to coach,” said West. “He saw the need, and we are really excited about that.” Both West and Johnson hope to see more teams that meet outside the traditional sites take part in the program. “We want to be a reflection of the communities that we’re engaging,” said Johnson. “We invite the community (to let us know) if they have a spot where girls are gathering and want to start a team,” added West. Readers who wish to take part in the run may register via www.gotrlancaster.org/5K. Registration will be discounted through Friday, Nov. 9. Discounts are also offered for running buddies and for children age 8 and under. Each GOTR participant who runs the 5K does so with a running buddy, who must be age 16 or older. Often, the buddy is a family member, but Wilson noted that volunteer running buddies are often needed. Individuals who would like to volunteer to be running buddies may visit www.gotr lancaster.org/5k#show-volunteer.

Johnson shared that GOTR staff members are pleased to welcome the new team from the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club to the program. “We are so excited to be branching out to a nontraditional site,” she stated, noting that the program is always mindful of physical and cognitive disabilities. “We will strive to provide curriculum modifications when needed, and we promise all girls will have a coach who has been trained to understand social context and create positive and inclusive environments and build genuine relationships.” Jennifer West, program director

On Saturday, Oct. 20, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m., 10 members of the Grant Street Dance Company will present “No Strings Attached” at The Trust Performing Arts Center, 37 N. Market St., Lancaster. According to Jureckson, “No Strings Attached” was created from her wish to approach this performance from a fresh perspective. She has chosen music that will range from classical to distinctly German sounds, and guitarist Chris Keeney will accompany one section of the performance. “The other goal I had in addition to breaking strings was to see if I could blend a group of unrelated dances together in a seamless performance,” said Jureckson. “It’s an ongoing flowing kind of experience with the underlying theme of human connection.” Jureckson added that this connection will be displayed physically in dancers’ bodies actually sharing weight or in focus with dancers looking at each other in a way that conveys a message.
Jureckson pointed out that dance plays an important role in an age where communication is easier than ever but real human connection is not necessarily in abundance. “Dance is an art form that you can’t phone in,” Jureckson commented. “You have to be in the same room with someone to dance with them.” Calling dance personal and genuine whether two people are dancing or two dozen are taking the stage, she added, “When you’re dancing together, it’s an authentic connection.” Making connections during rehearsal is not always easy, according to Jureckson, who is working with all women for this show. “Working with dancers of different ages and backgrounds is not always smooth, but it is real connection,” Jureckson relayed. “It is a collaborative effort (where) we all come together as professionals, and we have to keep lines of communication open. I find that beautiful (and) challenging and a
refreshing change.” For the first 10 years of its existence, Grant Street selfproduced a yearly concert under the umbrella of the New Movement Center of Lancaster, which was a local nonprofit organization. “We were the resident dance company,” recalled Jureckson. “ We had a home and a rehearsal space.” When
the New Movement Center closed and Grant Street lost its rehearsal space, Jureckson thought that season of her life might be over. “The dancers were not about to let the company fall apart,” said Jureckson. “Grant Street was too important to them.” Jureckson said in the last 10 years, the company has not done
full concerts. Rather it has done small performances in other shows. The anniversary event will be a celebration of the 20 years Grant Street has been creating dance experiences for dancers and audiences. Readers who would like to purchase tickets to “No Strings Attached” may call 717-560-8241 or visit www.lbc/edu/events.

Pie Sale Will Support Dyslexia Center
Landis Valley To Host Harvest Days
The Valley of Lancaster Lodge of Perfection is accepting orders for dessert pies that will be available for pickup on Nov. 20 in time for Thanksgiving. Orders are due by Oct. 25, and proceeds will benefit the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster.
Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, 2451 Kissel Hill Road, Lancaster, will host its annual Harvest Days festival from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 13 and 14. The venue will feature an assortment of educational activities, including a pumpkin patch, wagon rides, music, food, and demonstrations of historic crafts, trades, and farm chores. Harvest Days will feature demonstrations that tell the story of the historic harvest. After a fruitful summer, raw materials like apples, flax, wood, and hogs would be processed many times by hand - into usable products that would be used for food, warm clothing, or building materials. Tradespeople also made tools to supply to farmers, loggers, and other people who worked the land. Visitors to Harvest Days will be able to see these processes and more at interactive exhibits set up around the site.

vendors, and pumpkins may be bought from the patch to decorate. Additionally, attendees will be able to try apple varieties and watch them get processed into apple butter, cider, and pies. Separate admission fees have been set for adults, for seniors age 65 and up, and for youths ages 6 to 11. Children age 5 and under will be admitted for free. All proceeds will benefit the museum. Situated on 100 acres, Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum is a living history crossroads village that collects, preserves, and interprets the history and material culture of the Pennsylvania German community from 1740 to 1940. The museum is administered by the PHMC with the active support of the Landis Valley Associates, a registered charitable organization. More information on Harvest Days, as well as other upcoming events, can be found at www.landisvalleymuseum.org.

frozen pumpkin, and unbaked frozen apple crumb, cherry crumb, and peach crumb. The frozen pies may be stored until Christmas, although lodge member and pie project chair Bill Hackman said that he has successfully frozen pies for two years thanks to the heavy freezer bags the lodge uses to protect the baked goods. The Masons make their pie dough from scratch, and they use Hackman’s mother’s recipe for pumpkin pie. All of the crumbs on the fruit pies are made with butter, and the apples are peeled and sliced fresh. While some premade fillings are used, the Masons put their own twist on them, such as adding tart red cherries to the cherry pie filling. It takes at least 150 people to cover the shifts in the kitchen at the Masonic Center, 213 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster. The lodge members painstakingly build these pies to raise funds for the Children’s Dyslexia Center of Lancaster, which has offices in the Masonic Center. Pie sale proceeds account for about 40 percent of the center’s operating budget, said director Heather Hinkel. The center serves students in first through 12th grades from Lancaster, Lebanon, York, and Chester counties, remediating dyslexia using the Orton-Gillingham method. All instruction is provided individually at no charge to clients, but it costs the center approximately $5,000 to tutor one client for a year. To order pies or to learn more about dyslexia remediation, readers may visit www.childrens dyslexiacenteroflancaster.org, call 717-481-5680, or email cdclancasterpa@gmail.com.
They may also learn about crops that matured and were processed earlier in the year, such as flax and maple sap. Visitors will be able to talk to demonstrators and take part in activities for people of all ages. Special children’s areas will include a discovery tent and the museum’s education building. Folk music will be performed, and horse-drawn wagons will take visitors around the site. One wagon will feature seats, and another will be filled with straw. Sheep shearing demonstrations will take place, and visitors may watch as fleece is sheared and then spun into yarn and made into a shawl. There will be a beekeeping demonstration with a portable hive, and a cow will be on-site, allowing attendees to learn about the different products that her milk will produce. There will also be an opportunity to learn about hog butchering. Food may be purchased from

Lady Booters Play Tough Despite Losses by Vaughn Brown
Warwick (1-5-2, 3-8-2) has struggled to get into the win column this season, but it is not from lack of effort. “Record wise, it’s definitely been a tough season,” stated head coach Wendell Hannaford. “The girls have lost every game by only one goal.” That includes two that ended in a draw. “As much as the record isn’t what we hoped for, the girls have truly played some really exciting and strong soccer,” continued Hannaford. Indeed, the two games they played last week, a 2-1 loss to CV and a 1-0 defeat at Manheim Township were very close to tipping the W-L column in Warwick’s favor. Conestoga Valley was awarded a penalty kick in the 37th minute and Gabriella Barone-Graybill made it count, tying the game at 1-1 just before halftime. The goal negated Warwick’s slim lead that Emma Oberholtzer provided when she found the back of the net in the 14th minute. While Kendall Morgan made four saves on seven CV attempts on goal, Ana Weis found a way by her in the 92nd minute to give the Buckskins the comeback in overtime. Manheim Township was a different
story as Emma Hagg put the Streaks up 1-0 in the sixth minute and the defense stifled the Warwick offense, even though they held a 7-5 advantage in shots. Johanna Martin turned away seven shots on goal for the day. “I’m extremely proud of the girls for the improvements we’ve made each year,” added Hannaford. “The play style is fun to watch and we consistently carry the play in games.” Hannaford’s frustration at not getting the finishing goals is tempered by knowing that even in the losses, his team has controlled the action and stuck together through the hardships. “The record doesn’t show how good this group is, and anyone that has seen these kids play would agree. The girls will be a force for years to come.” On the opposite end of the spectrum, the boys have compiled a Section One best record of 6-2, 9-2 overall and but for a 2-0 loss to Manheim Township (5-3, 10-3) last week would be two games ahead of Hempfield (5-3, 11-3). They opened the week with a 5-4 victory over Conestoga Valley. “Against CV we made too many mental mistakes and that is what led to us giving up four goals against them,” stated head coach Gordy
Cowher. “From an offensive standpoint, we played very well.” In that game both Robbie Heckman and Jay Destinoble scored twice with Heckman giving the Warriors a 2-0 lead in the first half before CV scored in the 40th minute to pull within one at the break. Destinoble scored twice in the second half and the Warriors scored once more to pull off the victory. Drew Stief turned away two of the Buck’s six shots while Warwick placed nine shots on goal. Township scored twice in the second half of a scoreless game and made it stick, even though Warwick was able to place six shots on goal. “We possessed the ball, we played good defense and we created a couple of good scoring opportunities that we didn’t finish,” said Cowher. “When MT scored their first goal off of a header, it seemed to take most of our energy away. For some reason, we did not respond like we have earlier in the season.” FOOTBALL Four turnovers, two of which directly led to Manheim Township touchdowns, still were almost not enough to keep the Warriors from defeating the Blue Streaks Friday night, but the host team managed to do what it had to do to win 28-20. With the loss and a Wilson (3-0, 5-2) win, Warwick (3-1, 5-2) dropped into sole possession of second place in

Section One. Tied at 7-7 after one half of play following a Joey McCracken two-yard touchdown pass to Nick Fucci (2-10 yards, TD), the Warriors opened the second with a scoring drive that ended with another Fucci score, this time on a 1-yard run to lead 14-7. Fucci ended the game with 41 yards rushing on 14 carries. Two interceptions on consecutive Warwick possessions led to 21 unanswered points on the part of Manheim Township and a 28-14 lead early in the fourth quarter. McCracken (11-18, 142 yards, TD) later connected with Hilton Michael (5-97, TD) from 12-yards out to pull within 28-20 when the PAT failed, but Warwick was not able to do any better over the final 4:41 of the game. FIELD HOCKEY Warwick split a pair of shutouts last week beginning with a 5-0 win over Ephrata and ending with a 7-0 non-league loss to Conestoga. Meghan Quinn scored twice against the Mounts while Biz Van Scoten, Caitlyn Godzicki, and Julia Eshelman each added one apiece in the win. Jumping out to a 3-0 lead by halftime the Warwick defense clamped down allowing Ephrata only four shots on goal, all of which Catie Brubaker stuffed, while the offense peppered Mounts keeper Annika Galen with ten of its own. Brubaker stopped a whopping 19

of Conestoga’s shots on Saturday, but Warwick could not contain Charlotte DeVries who scored four times in the Warriors loss. VOLLEYBALL Warwick posted a 3-0 shutout of McCaskey last Tuesday on the road putting its record at 3-4, 4-5 overall for the season. Ashley Glouner and Lauren Lefever each recorded four kills with Lefever also serving up three aces in the 25-8, 25-16, 25-9 win. Shannon Morrisey added 13 assists, Marissa Treibley also had three service aces and Megan Zook added two blocks for Warwick.
TENNIS Warwick (2-4, 5-7) has had its share of struggles this year resulting in a fifth place standing in Section One, but that didn’t keep them from sending five girls to the League Tournament held last weekend at Conestoga Valley. Selena Orta led the girls in singles, reaching the semifinals as did Erin Fleurant and Chloe Long in doubles. Orta began her tournament in flight four singles with a solid 6-2, 6-2 win over Solanco’s Elsie Zaborskiy and advancing to the quarterfinals where she met number three seed Janae

Prima Announces New Location Since its genesis in 2010, Prima, a contemporary theater organization in Lancaster, has performed at more than a dozen venues across Lancaster County. Being nomadic has limited performance dates, consumed nearly one-third of the organization’s annual budget, and depleted nearly 40 percent of staff time, while also inconveniencing audiences. To address this challenge, Carol Culliton of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, as well as Sequinox, has made visionary investments toward Prima acquiring a home in the western part of Lancaster city. Formerly known as the Hamilton Ballroom, the new Prima venue, located at 941 Wheatland Ave. in Lancaster, offers 125 free parking spaces with a 200-person capacity. The space will offer flexible seating and staging arrangements, including in-theround, thrust, and proscenium
setups. With the design and construction leadership of TONO Group, Prima’s new home is undergoing a transformation to become a contemporary destination for theater, music, film, and special events. Prima will be situated for complete hospitality services with a full kitchen. Illuminated Integration is installing state-ofthe-art audio, video, and lighting equipment. Total improvements include an initial investment of over $500,000. Prima plans to offer multiple series of events, including MainStage and Altro (concert) Series, as well as musically focused film. In addition to Prima programming, the venue will also be a unique venue for business and personal special events. With a grand opening concert production of Piano Men, which will run from Friday, Dec. 7, to Saturday, Dec. 15, Prima will begin offering
more performance dates and variety in programming in a well-equipped venue. In order to utilize this new community resource to its fullest potential, a three-year, $3.2 million effort has begun called FWD, launching forward Prima’s new home. Nearly half of the funds to be raised ($1.57 million) have been committed thus far for renovations, lease, and operational growth. Contributions are now being sought for investments in furthering the Prima experience for the Lancaster community. Gifts to FWD will expand artistic programming and support artists, including student internships and local performers. Prima launched the announcement of the new venue with a music video. To view the video or to donate, readers may visit www.primaFWD.org.

tion. The recent contribution will allow Mom’s House to provide quality care to help single-parent families move out of poverty and onto a path toward long-term economic stability. The funds will go toward furthering both Mom’s House’s child care and parent programs. Mom’s House offers accredited
child care programs that allow children from 6 weeks old to 6 years old the opportunity to have an individualized curriculum. The organization also provides single parents with workshops, resources, and support to become better parents, professionals and community members.

Restart Banquet Will Feature David Ring By Ann Mead Ash
Santiago. Medical personnel, believing Ring was dead, ignored the baby for nearly 20 minutes. “That’s a miracle,” said Santiago. “ Who doesn’t breathe for 20 minutes and lives?” W hen Ring was orphaned, his older sister took him in. “(Ring’s) older sister was a believer, and she introduced him to the Lord,” noted Santiago. RTCM, located at 2324 Leaman Road, Lancaster, strives to help men who have been traumatized through abuse and who have turned to abusing chemicals or developed other kinds of addictions. RTCM aims to support clients in finding healing and developing healthy coping mechanisms. RTCM has graduated 10 students since February. At this
time, six students live in the facility along with two graduates who are serving as interns and four live-in staff members. The facility can accommodate up to a dozen students. Santiago noted that one way the ministry helps students to beat addiction is through significant amounts of Bible study and training. “ We have a track record of working toward a minimum of 20 hours a week of either spiritual or life skill classes with the men in this house,” said Santiago. “In a month’s time, that is 80 hours of discipleship classes.” According to Santiago, the banquet will start off with appetizers, followed by a salad bar. The main meal will include broasted chicken, barbecued pork, green beans, mashed
potatoes, and macaroni and cheese. A dessert bar will offer guests a variety of sweet treats from which to choose. A Chinese auction that will be part of the banquet will include up to a half-dozen items. Special music will be provided by Jameson Road Band. Business and table sponsorships for the event are available. Tickets are required to attend the banquet. Seating is limited, and tickets must be purchased by Monday, Oct. 15. A freewill offering will be received at the event. Readers who would like to learn more about RTCM may visit www.restartministry.org. Those who would like to sponsor a table or register to attend the banquet may call 717-304-3291 or email officemanager@restart ministry.org.
Pastor Jaime Santiago, executive director and founder of Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM), has known speaker David Ring for more than a decade. “I met David Ring in 2005 at the Sanford Teen Challenge in Sanford, Fla.,” recalled Santiago. “I was the director of education there when he came to speak.” Santiago had heard of Ring through the church community, and he was so impressed with Ring’s story that he remembered it and kept Ring in mind when he was in need of a speaker for the third annual RTCM fall banquet on Monday, Nov. 5, at Shady Maple Banquet Center, 129 Toddy Drive, East Earl. Doors will open for fellowship and appetizers at 5:30 p.m., and the meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. Ring, who was born with cerebral palsy, became an orphan at the age of 14. He endured ridicule and embarrassment because of his disabilities, but Ring found acceptance and self-respect after beginning a relationship with Christ, which has sustained him and allowed him to overcome in spite of his circumstances. Ring has shared his story with thousands of people since he began speaking in 1973. Santiago has heard Ring speak several times now, and he recalls points from the story that continue to resonate with David Ring (left photo) will be the featured speaker and Jameson Road Band (right him. “When (Ring) was born, photo) will play when Restart Training Center Ministry holds its annual fall banquet at he didn’t breathe,” explained Shady Maple Banquet Center on Nov. 5.

many organizations and agencies, including numerous groups that serve children. Among these are the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic, the Lancaster Boys and Girls Club, Aaron’s Acres, and VisionCorps. Stoeckle also mentioned that Barshinger recently contributed to the campaign to build a new pediatric inpatient center at Lancaster General Hospital. The new center will open in August 2019 to all children in the community who need medical care, regardless of their family’s ability to pay. The event was highlighted by special guest and motivational speaker Dr. Dennis Denenberg. He began his remarks by naming Barshinger the First Lady of Philanthropy of Lancaster. Through personal stories and comparisons with historical heroes, he highlighted Barshinger’s heroic virtues, including doing good deeds for others, making a difference in the world, and teaching others values. Stoeckle presented a check to Barshinger, who in turn presented it to the Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic. Dr. Rusty Long, executive director emeritus of the clinic, thanked Barshinger and the Kiwanis Club of the Lititz Area for their long-term financial support. Rodger Weaver gave a testimonial on how his daughter Keturah received high-quality care at Lancaster Cleft Palate Clinic.

For the fifth consecutive year, a team of volunteers from Jerusalem Church, 1620 Newport Road, Manheim, has designed and created a corn maze. The community is invited to explore the corn maze at the church’s Disguise and Prize event on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 1 to 4 p.m. The free event is open to children and families. Disguise and Prize is a fall activity that allows children in costume to walk around to different decorated vehicles in the church parking lot to receive small prizes such as candy, stickers, and toys. Activity stations with various games and crafts will be set up in the parking lot. Free refreshments will also be available.
Students Conduct Research This summer, more than 400 University of Delaware undergraduate students worked on a range of research projects in disciplines all across the university as well as in the community.
Over the past 10 weeks, the students have collaborated with their faculty mentors and, in many cases, with other undergraduates and graduate students to learn how original
research takes place and to create new knowledge themselves. Local students include Allison Michalowski of Hummelstown and Laurel Schappell of Lititz.
The intense heat and heavy rainfall this summer caused the corn to grow extremely tall very fast, volunteer Angela Havice said. By the time the group of volunteers cut the maze during the second week of July, the corn was already more than six feet tall in some spots. “We are fortunate that the corn field drains well due to the type of soil,” noted Angela. “The field is on a slight hill, so the water runs down the hill. Quite simply, the corn is very tall this year, and we are fortunate that it is not muddy.” Gene Saylor created the blueprint for the maze, with Ray Gruber, Kevin Havice, and Chad Eberly assisting with the letter placement with tape measures, strings, and flags for the “Christ Alone” design. Trent Martin and Mary Gruber completed the bulk of the cutting, and additional volunteers held flags and tape measures and provided confirmation that everything was straight. This year’s maze has one fewer letter than last year’s creation, which spelled out “Amazing Grace.” Angela shared that the message of the maze, “Christ Alone,” coincides with the mission of the church, which is “to lead people to find their greatest joy and pleasure in Jesus Christ above
all things to the glory and worship of God.” Bible verses such as Romans 8:38-39 and Acts 4:12, along with the popular hymn “In Christ Alone,” also played a role in the church members settling upon the “Christ Alone” phrase. “Our mission is to draw attention to Jesus Christ and to make His name famous,” continued Angela. “True and lasting joy and pleasure cannot be found outside of union with Him. Our goal is to proclaim Christ in such a way that people can respond to the Gospel and be united to Christ by faith and therein find superlative and eternal gladness in God.” Organizers estimate that approximately 235 people attended last year’s Disguise and Prize
event, with many folks lingering longer than in past years to relax outside and take a few extra turns in the maze. Angela said that although the event is geared toward children, people of all ages have enjoyed taking a trip through the corn maze. “We love hosting the Disguise and Prize event,” commented Angela. “The vision of Jerusalem Church is to transform our community with the Gospel, (and) we feel Disguise and Prize allows us to do this in a unique way.” In the case of inclement weather, the event will take place on Sunday, Oct. 14. by the great amount of support from the local community. This year, MHNRC was named a fivestar, deficiency-free facility by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Wilson noted that for the most part, the retirement community is supported financially by Medicaid, but due to cuts in funding, additional finances are needed to assist with maintaining and repairing the aging building. At the end of the summer, the underground water tank that houses thousands of gallons of water for the building’s sprinkler system needed to be repaired. Wilson said the project cost upward of $30,000, and proceeds from the benefit dinner will help to cover those costs as well as upcoming roof repairs.

have found themselves providing is access to bathing. It costs Siloam Ethiopia about $4 for each client visit. In the months since the clinic opened, the client base has been predominately female. “We primarily have seen women because women are inordinately affected by poverty,” board member Lindsey Teske said. “Ethiopia is one of six countries in the world that count for half of maternal mortality, and one out of every 64 mothers dies in childbirth.” She shared an additional statistic from the World Health Organization, reporting that in 2016, one out of every 21 babies died before their first birthday. “The good news is that rate has been getting better every year; it has been cut in half since 2010. Simple measures like prenatal vitamins and checkups make a big difference,” she said. Eventually, Siloam Ethiopia would like to make a difference in the lives of children by opening an orphanage to offer safe housing, education, and nutrition. “There are so many children in the streets,” Ketema remarked, noting that many youths have been orphaned due to AIDS. This is a year of firsts for Siloam Ethiopia, an organization started several years ago by Demeke Getahun and Wegayhu Ketema, a married couple that resides in Elizabethtown. The deadline to make reservations for the banquet is Monday, Nov. 5. A cost has been set to attend the banquet, and an offering will be accepted. There will also be opportunities to sponsor clinic workers or other costs associated with running the clinic. Getahun and Ketema will present an update on the clinic, which they are visiting from Sept. 26 to Thursday, Oct. 18. The couple plans to participate in the dedication ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 13; inventory all of the supplies that have been
