Lititz Skate Park is downright gnarly

There are all kinds of movements and physical activities. Many of them are beneficial to the overall wellness of the human condition.

The Lititz Skate Park doesn’t

promote traditional outdoor activities.W hat it does promote is fitness, exercise and getting outside.

Warwick girls’ soccer team is really cleaning up

It’sdesigned to be an opportunity to give back to the community.

But for the Warwick High School girls’ soccer team, the Adopt-AHighway program is a team-bonding experience, a springboard to success, a program tradition.

The Warriors are civic-minded and like-minded.

On two weekend mornings each year, players from the Warwick girls’ soccer team pick up trash and generally maintain a two-mile stretch of Broad Street/Route 501 in Lititz. The Adopt-A-Highway program is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

“It teaches them how to work within a team, how to overcome challenges,” said Warwick head coach Wendell Hannaford. “Taking

just a little bit of time for the community says a lot about a person’s character. These kids are smart and genuine people who I know will have very successful futures.”

The Warriors truly make the best out of an unseemly chore.

“This is a great way for the team to bond and work together.”

Typically, Warwick breaks its team down into three trash-seeking squads to get the job done. It usually takes about 90 minutes to cover their 2-mile stretch of Broad Street, with the girls “picking up every single cigarette butt.”

“They take the time to do it well,” said Hannaford. “I always think I’ll have to get them motivated, but

there’s none of that. They take pride in doing it. It seems to resonate with the players why they’re there. No one’s every complained or pouted or had a bad attitude. They cherish the time with their friends. They’re in it together.”

“Adopt-A-Highway is something our team does as a way to give back and take care of our community,” said Warrior senior captain Autumn Horst. “We go around town in groups and pick up all the trash we can find. This is a great way for the team to bond and work together. I really enjoy Adopt-A-Highway because even just an hour of picking up trash truly makes a difference in our community.”

Adopt-A-Highway has been an annual Warwick girls’ soccer tradition since 2004, when former head coach Mike Logan instituted it. When Hannaford took over in 2016, he

First online fundraiser for Kingdom causes planned

Since the fall of 2022, David Kieffer, president of the FaithfulGive board, has been preparing for the organization’s first online giving event to benefit organizations with a Christian mission that are active in Lancaster County. “We prayed and thought and designed and listened for a year,” said Kieffer of FaithfulGive’s five-member board and its organizational team. “Mostly we listened to what would serve various nonprofit leaders.”

The result is a three-day online giving event, which will take place in October. More than 40 local organizations have signed on to take part in the fundraiser, which will open just after midnight on Sunday, Oct. 15, and close at the end of the day on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

To introduce the event, a breakfast will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, at Westminister Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 a.m. In addition, a short celebration picnic will be held on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. at See FaithfulGive pg 2

Long’s Park. “There will be worship, celebration, and announcing prizes,” explained Kieffer. There is no cost to attend either event, but donations will be welcomed. Those wishing to attend either event may register at www.faithfulgive.org.

Awards given at the picnic will include prizes that participating organizations will compete for from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day of the event. Prize categories are the Engaged Donor prize to benefit smaller organizations; the Show Me the Money prize for the largest unique donation; a prize package from Masterpiece Marketing, which will be awarded based on a written submission; and the Just Keep Swimming award, which will be awarded by the board based on nominations by donors who submit a paragraph about why an organization has demonstrated wisdom, love, and persistent courage in challenging circumstances. Nominations for the Just Keep Swimming award are open at https://faithfulgive.org/prizes/.

Kieffer pointed out that the

first day of the event will not be focused on giving, although the platform will be available. “It’s really a day of prayer,” he said, noting that prayer guides will be distributed to various churches that are helping FaithfulGive to spread the word. “(The guide) will enable people to learn about the organizations and pray for them,” Kieffer said.

Kieffer said that the decision to start FaithfulGive was motivated by the many Kingdom-minded organizations located in the county. “This is really a movement of people who live locally who recognize that Lancaster has a rich heritage of biblically faithful nonprofit organizations founded to reflect and live out biblical convictions in every area of life,” he said. “This was started by those who want to celebrate

those organizations, nurture their vision, and guard it for the next generation.”

Looking ahead, Kieffer noted that he would love to see the giving event raise $500,000 or more. “Our goal is to bless this community,” he said. “This is really a labor of love,” he noted, adding that neither he nor the other

board members - who include vice president Lynette Morales, secretary Jim Adams, treasurer Steve Bucklen, and member at large Kurt Weaver - are salaried. Readers who would like more information about the first FaithfulGive event may visit the aforementioned website.

Ephrata Cloister sets Community Day program

In the 1700s, Historic Ephrata Cloister was the town of Ephrata. Like any small village, it had craftsmen who wove cloth, baked bread and built houses. Ephrata also featured a printing office to produce books and a doctor to care for the sick.

sometimes even going as far as deploying a staff member to supervise it - the facility is owned by the borough of Lititz.

“Having physical activity, that’s really healthy,” said the Lititz recCenter’s program director, Ron Stief. “It helps you to think clearer. It helps you to focus. There’s a lot to be said for physical activity. When you release endorphins and adrenaline, it helps across the board.”

Skating can be considered both an art and a science.

With skateboards, BMX bikes and scooters, visitors to the Lititz Skate Park may navigate a series of ramps, rails and jumps in interpretive and inventive ways. Local skaters are just as creative as they are athletic.

“The purpose is to open up a recreational activity to an element that’s not really been targeted in our area,” said Stief. “Skating isn’t football, baseball or soccer. It’s kind of an attraction for a group not into traditional sports. It’s more of an individual sport.”

Stief said that the Lititz Skate Park has sort of become a destination in town.

“A lot of kids wander over after school,” said Stief. “It’s pretty cool that we have a destination like that.”

“Some people travel to come to our skate park,” continued Stief. “When they’re there, skaters challenge themselves to go faster,

higher and all that stuff. Some just hang out with friends, with like interests and similar abilities.”

The Lititz Skate Park is open year-round, from dawn to dusk. While there is no way to formally quantify its use, the number of skate park visitors is directly related to the weather.

“It’s not a sign-in thing,” said Stief. “It’s open to anyone. It’s hard to tell how many people are using it, but on a decent day - a typical summer day - there are dozens of people out there. You’d be surprised by how many people use it year-round.”

A few years ago, the Lititz Skate Park underwent a much-needed facelift thanks to a donation from Rohrer’s Concrete of Lititz.

The skate park also fits in very nicely with the Lititz recCenter’s stated mission, which is “to enrich the lives of the community by providing exceptional programs and facilities that promote the participation of individuals, families, businesses and groups from all backgrounds.”

“It’s a good complement to what the rec center offers,” said Stief. “We’re here to serve. It’s very beneficial to the community to have a facility like this.”

For additional information about the Lititz recCenter, go to https://lititzrec.com/.

These and other 18thcentury activities will come to life as part of Community Day, an interactive educational program set for Friday, Oct. 20, from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The program is open to public and private schools, as well as homeschoolers. There will be an admission fee, with separate prices for students and for chaperones. Advance reservations are encouraged and can be made by calling the Ephrata Cloister at 717733-6600.

The hands-on program will offer at least a dozen different stations around the historic site, with each stop offering a 10- to 15minute look at things such as lighting, clothing and writing in the 1700s community. Stud ents will be free to travel in small groups with their chaperones in any order through the various interpretive stations.

A visit to the bakery will show that bread did not always come in plastic wrappers, and the carpenter will explain that that not all roof shingles are made the same. Students will also visit the doctor and the schoolhouse, where they will learn how to write on stone.

Historic Ephrata Cloister is administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission with support from the Ephrata Cloister Associates. For more information, visit www.EphrataCloister.org.

Persons with disabilities who need special assistance or accommodation should call in advance to discuss their needs. Pennsylvania TDD relay service is available at 800-654-5984.

LCSWMA encourages proper battery disposal

Rechargeable batteries containing metals such as lithium and nickel can spark and explode when damaged. To combat the growing risk of battery fires, the Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority (LCSWMA) has announced the launch

of a public education campaign to encourage proper disposal of rechargeable batteries.

Rechargeable batteries are in many common household items, including power tools, toys, cellphones, laptops, watches, vape devices and electric toothbrushes. If the rechargeable battery becomes damaged, it can cause a chemical reaction that creates a spark or explosion. Rechargeable batteries in the waste stream are prone to damage due to the impact from equipment and machinery during the waste

management process.

According to Robert Zorbaugh, chief executive officer of LCSWMA, the improper disposal of rechargeable batteries is putting trash haulers, waste disposal and recycling facilities, employees and the community at risk. Countless fires have started in the back of trash trucks and at waste disposal facilities.

Karen Gross, LCSWMA communications manager, would like the community to know that there are many free and convenient drop-off locations for end-of-life rechargeable batteries. In

Lancaster County, residents can use LCSWMA’s drivethrough Household Hazardous Waste Facility to drop-off both alkaline and rechargeable batteries.

For more details and to learn about other collection locations, visit www.Safe BatteryDisposal.com. The webpage, available in English and Spanish, includes information regarding specialty batteries such as e-bike and electric vehicle batteries as well as battery handling tips. Program to feature Native American-style

canoe

Author and experimental archaeologist Robin Moore will bring his 13-foot birchbark canoe from Bucks County to the Eicher Arts Center, 409 Cocalico St., in Ephrata Borough’s Grater Park, on Sunday, Oct. 15.He will give a presentation from 2 to 4 p.m.

Made of birch bark covering cedar structures, birchbark canoes were developed hundreds of years ago by indigenous people in what is now Canada. The canoes were light enough to be carried on land to avoid the riskiest stretches of waterway. Moore noted that the area that is now Lancaster County probably lacked the trees most suitable for the canoes’ construction, but tribes such as the Iroquois on Northern raids sometimes took birchbark canoes back with them to use in what is

now the United States. European explorers praised the canoes, and fur traders used them extensively in both Canada and the United States. Canvas, a manufactured fabric, has largely supplanted birch bark as a protective covering for canoes, but in the summer of 2022, Moore spent three weeks in a remote northern Ontario location building an Ojibway Longnose style birchbark canoe with instruction from Tom Byers, a master of the birchbark canoe building craft. Byers is of French and Cree heritage and has built 98 birchbark canoes over the last 25 years. Working long days on a property with no electricity, power tools or internet access, Moore and Byers used an ax and a crooked knife to collect natural materials from the

Canadian bush and build Moore’s watercraft.

In addition to the canoe, Moore will display scale models of traditional styles of birchbark watercraft and samples of roots of Northern white cedar, Jack pine and birch trees used in

Bomberger’s Store display wins national award

Bomberger’s Stores Inc., Lititz location, recently created its own mini football stadium as part of the Miracle Bucket Display Contest offered through the store’s national affiliate, Ace. The annual contest, held in conjunction with the Ace Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Bucket Sale, raises funds and awareness for CMN. The objective of the contest, which is open to all Ace retailers, is to build the most creative display utilizing the actual CMN buckets.

Ace choses three finalists, then the public votes for the winner among the three. Bomberger’s learned that it was a finalist and after the public vote, the company finished second in the contest.

Bomberger’s display features a “bucket football stadium” complete with a realistic scoreboard, press boxes, lighting, some fluffy “players” in position with their own built-in padding, and even the Goodyear Blimp

getting the action from above. The fans cheering on from the bucket stadium seats are pictures of real children who have their own stories from CMN Hospitals. Their photos were provided to the store by CMN representatives with their permission to use them in this setting.

The national Ace representatives chose Bomberger’s to be a finalist out of many entries from across the country and congratulated the store on their “beautiful” and “awesome” display and thanked the store for “putting so much thought” into the many details. The store wanted the

display to not only represent the CMN kids directly but also the wider organization, so they hid special CMN statistics in the numbers of the “scoreboard.”

By earning second place, a $5,000 donation from Ace was made to the store’s local CMN hospital in Bomberger’s name.
