Boulder Bash Winners Crest Waves fter the fourth annual Boulder Bash at the Lititz recROC was postponed due to COVID-19 precautions, organizers decided to make sure the event, which was held on Sept. 12, was done in a manner that was safe for 70 climbers. The answer was to transform the competition into a series of competitor waves, with participants who ranged in experience from novice to advanced. The Boulder Bash, which attracted climbers from southcentral Pennsylvania and Maryland, included three competitions for both youths and adults, which divided participants by gender. Members of recROC and local climbers placed in the top three in each division. Placing in the women’s novice division were, in first place, Liz Borders of Mount Joy; second place, Kiki Davis of Lancaster; and third place, River Smoker, a youth competitor from Lititz. In the men’s novice division, youth Christian Adams, of Manheim, took first; Noah Shettel, of Lititz, took second; and Shane Ober, of Lititz, took third. The women’s intermediate division was won by Leah Brown of Harrisburg, followed by Kathryn Greene of Newville and Megan Curry of York. The men’s intermediate division was won by Max Fioriti of Philadelphia, followed by Eric Resch of Lititz and Bryan Heckman, also of Lititz.

St. John Neumann School Opens In Lancaster
Entering the Bench Mark facility on East Liberty Street in Lancaster is a little like entering a secret club. A short hallway leads to a door that opens into a room filled with serious weightlifting equipment. The brightly colored walls are covered with graffiti-like artwork paying homage to superheroes. According to founder and
When about 90 students and more than 50 spectators gathered along with teachers and administrators outside the new St. John Neumann Catholic School (SJNCS), formerly, St. Anne School, on the morning of Sept. 8, it was with excitement for the future and reverence for the past. New principal Kyla Hockley opened the ceremony of blessing by saying, “Today we honor a new chapter looking with hope to the future, while anchoring ourselves in the proud tradition of St. Anne School.” St. Anne School, located at St. Anne Church on Liberty Street, Lancaster, was founded in 1924. Discussion surrounding the possibility of relocating had been ongoing for the past two decades. In the fall of 2018, members

Among the women’s advanced participants, Piper Brugmann, a youth from Lancaster, took first place; Jolie Abadir, also a youth from Lancaster took second and Meghan Anten of York came in third. The men’s advanced winner was Paul Lim of Towson, Md. Alex Barros of Harrisburg took second, followed by Mateo Chacon of Lititz. Corey Pickel, coordinator at the Lititz recCenter’s recROC facility, which opened in early 2017, said the event went off without a hitch. “With so few opportunities for competing this summer, the participants were more than ready and excited for the challenge,” he reported. “It wasn’t the full-scale event we would normally offer, but it was great to host a modified program. The recROC is a 10,000-square-foot worldclass climbing and bouldering facility, offering opportunities for bouldering and a number of other workouts on a variety of equipment. Bouldering training for all levels of competitors and enthusiasts is available year-round at the recROC. Readers who would like to learn more may visit www.lititzrecROC.com.

pable mattress design fell out of vogue, but it has returned full force, and more than 25 models are displayed in Gardner’s showroom. The last five years have been turbulent in the mattress world, with direct-toconsumer offerings increasing in number and options. The online companies’ return policies prompted Gardner’s to take another look at its customer exchange service, creating its Wake Up Happy Comfort Guarantee, which says, “If you don’t love your mattress, we’ll exchange it for one you do love, with no fees, costs, or delivery charges. Buying mattresses is a highly subjective process, Giagnocavo explained. “We can offer, spec for spec, the highest quality mattresses at each price point possible, and yet, when we put 10 people on any one mattress, we will get 10 very different opinions, he said. “Our bodies are all built differently, and we all have unique aches and pains along with some having intense medical issues. While we aren’t doctors and don’t pretend to be, everything we demonstrate and discuss with our customers can be felt and experienced by them in a positive way in which they feel better. That’s our job, (to) discover how our sleep systems fit your needs. McClure noted that Gardner’s strives to give customers positive experiences. Buying mattresses is important and can best be selected by shopping in-person at the right store, he asserted. “The fact that seven days a week any one of our customers can visit See Gardener’s pg 4

Along the way, Ben’s steady demeanor, customer service, and leadership skills have been a perfect fit with my skills of marketing and customer experience touch points. There is no way each of us reaches this point in time alone. Our company and our customers are truly better with us working together. The three decades of Gardner’s existence have seen ebbs and flows in the mattress business. Gardner’s Mattress & More is celebrating 30 years of serving Lancaster County. The business was founded as Gardner’s Bedrooms in 1990 by Jim Gardner, who sold it to Ben McClure and Jeff Giagnocavo when he retired in 2010. McClure and Giagnocavo met as buyer and seller 18 years ago. Giagnocavo was a sales representative, selling products to Gardner’s Bedrooms, and McClure was the showroom and selling manager. John Deslippe (left) and Will Kiefer offer students a chance to work out with positive role models at Bench Mark Program, founded by Kiefer in 2014. executive director Will Kiefer, the design is intentional. “We filled the space with color because we want it to be energetic,â€? said Kiefer. “We want it to be something that for (students who participate) feels very special,â€? he added, noting that the organization serves those ages 14 to 24. Most students are referred by a probation officer, therapist, or guidance counselor. Kiefer added that many students who come to Bench Mark to exercise are often caring for younger siblings at home. “When they come here, they have a place of respite ‌ just to be out and exercising,â€? he said. Kiefer keeps the fridge stocked, and there are videos and planned discussions. “Sometimes kids need a space that’s cool to connect with positive people,â€? he said. “ We have almost everything a kid could want to do workout-wise.â€? However, according to Kiefer, Bench Mark is much more than a place to lift weights. “(When students) come in, they see the gym, but what they don’t see right away at the front of the gym are these two computers.â€? The computers are there because Bench Mark helps students with resume writing and job searching for both part-time and full-time jobs. “They walk right past (the computers), and that’s fine with us, but as we work with them (we) transition from ‘Let’s just exercise together’ to ‘Let’s talk about what you want to do.’â€? At the request of Lancaster’s probation department, Bench Mark launched Strength Based Skill Building (SBSB) in 2018. Transportation to the program is provided within a 12-mile radius. “A judge will look at a kid and say, ‘I think you will benefit
from this type of fitnessbased mentoring,’ said Kiefer, who developed the sixmonth program that covers foundational principles including legal life skills, common sense money fundamentals, mindfulness to engage focus, fitness, and what Kiefer calls “authentic communication. “That’s teaching them to communicate in ways they haven’t before, explained Kiefer. Bench Mark also offers a Student Leadership Program (SLP), which teaches students how to run the gym. The trainees meet weekly to learn to handle daily responsibilities and help students determine goals. “They have to show up at every meeting, commit to a regular work schedule, and be a resource to students, said Kiefer. John Deslippe, who recently graduated from Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, completed SLP and works at Bench Mark. He said that working there gives him a chance to give back. “When I was a student, it was an outlet with positive role models, he said. “I learned how to work out and how to use working out as a way to blow off steam. Bench Mark has planned an unusual fundraiser for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 24 and 25. The event will combine a 5K race with bench press reps or pushups. The 5K and pushups may be done virtually. The bench press will be held at Bench Mark, 341 E. Liberty St., Lancaster. Bench Mark is currently open from 3 to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. More information about the program and the fundraiser may be found at www.bench markprogram.org.

The new school boasts 10 classrooms to accommodate kindergarten through eighthgrade students. There is also a computer lab; a multipurpose room, which serves as a cafeteria and a gym; and offices. The St. John Neumann Parish Center has also been renovated to include classrooms for prekindergarten, art, music, library, algebra, and instructional support. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the school offers both in-person and virtual classes, but inperson class sizes are limited to allow for social distancing. of St. John Neumann Parish, 601 E. Delp Road, Lancaster, launched a capital campaign for the purpose of building a new education center and renovating the church to allow for additional classrooms. On Feb. 2, 2020, a ceremonial groundbreaking for the new school was held and Wohlsen Construction began to build, following designs by Ted Vedock. On March 19, when the state mandated closing all nonessential businesses, construction stopped until May 1. A new construction schedule allowed for the school to be ready to open on Sept. 8. “This moment in history comes as a result of trust in God’s plan and God’s time,â€? said Hockley. “And so we begin by giving our praise and thanksgiving to God.â€? The Rev. Dan Powell, executive pastor of SJNCS, then led the dedication, saying, “Today we inaugurate this school dedicated to education.â€? He welcomed Hockley to the SJNCS family and thanked outgoing principal Suzanne Wood. He also acknowledged those in attendance who had made contributions, including representatives of Wohlsen; the Knights of Columbus; St. John Neumann 12532, which donated crucifixes for each classroom; the American Legion, which donated the classroom flags; and Charles Snyder Funeral Home, which donated the classroom clocks. To open the first day in the traditional way, Hockley asked students to come forth to lead a prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. “It is fitting that today we celebrate the birthday of our school, and we also celebrate the blessed mother’s birthday,â€? said Hockley. “St. Anne, our school’s patroness, gave birth to the blessed mother (the mother of Jesus), and today, St. Anne School brings to life St. John Neumann Catholic School.â€? Following the prayer and the pledge, student Abby Klein played “Americaâ€? on the keyboard. Powell noted, “Our school is so much more than teachers and students. The school is a place where the body of Christ is alive and well ‌ where each person’s unique gifts are discovered and refined and where faith and virtue come alive. Today we ask God’s blessings on the physical signs of His loving presence.â€? Powell went on to bless the flags, clocks, and

sanitizer table is nearby. “We try to make it as safe as possible,” said Susanne Materia, director of development. As of September, Arch Street had served more than 8,000 lunches. Serving meals has been a small part of what Arch Street does since the center first opened in the basement of St. John Lutheran on Orange Street in 1983. Because the center’s entrance faced Arch Street, it became known as Arch Street Center. Materia reported that the initial vision for the center was conceived by a number of women who were caseworkers and families of patients. Materia noted that at the time of the founding mental health recovery involved a number of meetings and doctor appointments. “The founding mothers were very forward thinking, saying (patients) need to have a place to go between (those appointments) to gather, hang out, and have recreation,” Materia explained. Originally, the center was open from 3 to 8 p.m. and served sandwiches and slow cooker meals. Prior to 2014, with the center outgrowing the dark basement, the administrators and the board began actively looking for a place Arch Street could call its own. The building on Market Street was purchased, and then a capital campaign was begun. “This building has been phenomenal,” said Materia. While the center was shut down this year, the staff went to work painting and adding the new logo to the walls. The reception area opens into a comfortable, brightly colored living room. There is type of atrium in the center of the building where Materia plans to hang member artwork. There is also a computer lab, a laundry, a locker room, a shower, and a game room. Since the county went to the green stage, the center has been open to a limited number of members from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. “Social isolation goes against the very fiber of what we are about,” said Lilly, who added that members must be screened and wash their hands upon entering. Arch Street’s membership model is based on a referral and a primary mental health diagnosis. A nominal membership fee is charged. With membership, all meals are free. See Arch Street pg 7

“ We have artists who are here every week,” Diller noted. Vendors who sell knitted items such as hats, scarves, and shawls are onsite alongside jewelry crafters, and makers of home décor. Jewelry vendors - both handmade and home business representatives - also take part in the market. Diller listed makers of floral arrangements, soaps, spices, and woodcrafts among other vendors who have taken part. Beginning Sept. 19, a percentage of market proceeds will benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. The benefit will continue through the end of October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. “The more vendors set up, the
more donation,” said Sharon Harsh, a member of the Misfits on a Mission Relay team. “Of course, we want shoppers to stop out (too),” added Harsh, who will have a table set up at the market to benefit the American Cancer Society. “We will have gift baskets, earrings, as well as (chances) to win cash.” Looking ahead, Diller said the market is hoping to offer monster truck rides before the venue closes for the year following the Oct. 31 market. “ We plan to open up again in April 2021,” said Diller. When COVID-19 restrictions hit, businesses with services related to live entertainment lost business. Brian Gilpin, owner of Illusion Sound and Lighting of Ephrata, was among them. Looking to diversify, Gilpin contacted business acquaintance Annaruth Diller in mid-July. By July 25, Diller had organized Ephrata Farm and Art Market, which is now held each Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 1185 Division Highway (Route 322), Ephrata - Gilpin’s place of business. “ We’re still growing as people become more aware of (the market),” said Diller on a recent Saturday when about a dozen vendors had set up awnings at the spot. “Normally we have about 18 vendors,” noted Diller. Moll melted the ink from a National Geographic magazine, allowed the pages to dry, and then selected pages that had intriguing patterns or markings. After using a solvent to remove any unwanted ink, she used alcohol ink, liquid acrylic, colored pencil, or chalk to add details, highlight areas, and bring out the colors. In addition, Moll creates mixed media pieces with materials such as plastics,
Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) in the U.S. invites its supporters and the public to join a livestreamed celebration of its 100 years of ministry on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 6:50 p.m. Celebration 2020: MCC at 100 will include videos, storytelling, music, and a message from longtime MCC leader and pastor Leonard Dow of Philadelphia. The celebration also will include stories of MCC’s history told by storyteller Ken Sensenig, who is assistant director of MCC East Coast. Marcella Hostetler of Lancaster, who taught music in schools and directed music in churches for 30 years, is coordinating musical performances for the event in cooperation with a variety of musicians. This event replaces an
in-person, multi-day celebration that was originally scheduled for June in Lancaster County. That event was postponed due to the pandemic and is now a livestreamed service only. Participants can join the celebration at www.mcc.org/ celebration-2020. Video recordings of the event, subtitled in English and Spanish, will be posted at the same link a few days after the event. As the keynote speaker, Dow will reflect on the challenges MCC has experienced over the past 100 years and the strengths God developed in the organization as a result. With inspiration from Scripture, he will encourage MCC to use its best self to step boldly into the next century of ministry. Dow is a former MCC staff member and board leader.
MCC began in 1920 when groups of Mennonites and Mennonite Brethren formed a committee to provide food and other assistance to people affected by war and famine in southern Russia which is present-day Ukraine. Today, MCC provides humanitarian relief, encourages sustainable development, and strengthens peacebuilding initiatives in more than 50 countries. To coincide with the celebration, MCC is inviting congregations to receive a special offering to support MCC’s ministry. Congregations are welcome to plan offerings at their convenience. Moll also creates mosaic art using old broken dishes and has unveiled three-piece series from fabrics that were melted, cooled, and then painted and micro-bronzed. Her repurposing extends to making fairy houses as well. Moll’s love for art and design led her to become a graphic designer and the owner of Design Express and Associates. She has also developed workshops in color and transition and other topics. She grew up in Danville and is a graduate of Syracuse University in New York. She currently resides in Harrisburg

If the words “moms in prayer” call forth a picture of mothers of school-age children meeting in a church on a weekday morning with Bibles in hand … well, one of the many Moms in Prayer groups in the area might fit that model, but it would be only a small portion of the reality. “We don’t fit inside a box,” said Sue Forry, regional coordinator for Lancaster, Lebanon, & Berks Counties Moms in Prayer International. Forry went on to note that groups are not necessarily church based. “We have groups for preschool moms, for mothers of children with special needs, and we have college and career groups,” said Forry. As schools begin to open up again - in a variety of formats, including public, private, cyber, homeschool, and hybrid models - Moms in Prayer groups are finding creative ways to meet - virtually or together with masks and social distancing or in Forry’s favorite format, porch praying. “We do social distancing on a porch, and we gather and pray,” explained Forry. “We are just about prayer,” she added.
school in the world covered in prayer.” Forry explained that meetings are one hour long and follow a schedule. “We start on time, and we end on time,” said Forry, who noted that a designated format helps keep groups on task. “We call it the four steps of prayer,” she explained. “It begins with praising God for who He is.” Forry said that time is followed by silent confession and then a time of giving thanks to God for what He has done. Lastly, there is a time for intercession, where moms pick one child of their own to pray for, but the group also prays for teachers, school concerns, and the Moms in Prayer ministry. “I told my ladies last week that perhaps the most important part is at the very end when the prayer sheet says to remember that what is prayed in the group stays in the group,” shared Forry. “We absolutely stress confidentiality.” Moms in Prayer began in California in 1984 and is now active in 140 countries. Forry believes groups in Lancaster County have been active for at least 30 years. “It was formerly called Moms in Touch, but they had a name change because when you try to translate Moms in Touch to other (languages) it does not translate well,” said Forry, who added that the group is not just for mothers of school-age children. “We are a women’s ministry, so this is also for aunts and grandmas, and for any woman who feels
in schools to impact them for Christ,” she said. According to Forry, Moms in Prayer International has several levels of leadership, including a state coordinator, regional coordinators, and area coordinators. In Lancaster County, Mary Beth

Lititz Area Mennonite School (LAMS) has begun its annual Trash-a-Thon. Normally, students, staff, and parent volunteers head out during a day in October to clean up litter along roadsides and at local parks, businesses, and churches. In 2020, with the need to social distance, LAMS families are finding time throughout the month of October to go out together and pick up as much litter as they can. Participants don their bright orange or yellow Trash-a-Thon shirts when participating. Trash-a-Thon gives students opportunities live out one of the school’s core values, “Serving Is Our Strength,” based on 1 Peter
4:11. In preparation for the initiative, students learned facts about the prevalence and effects of litter in Pennsylvania. Trash-a-Thon also serves as a fundraiser for the school’s operating budget as students ask people in the community to sponsor them for picking up litter. This year, instead of students knocking on doors, they may leave letters asking community members to consider sponsoring them. Another option is to give online at www.lams trashathon.givesmart.com. At this website, people may click “Items” and use a credit card to donate to the school or to help an individual family meet its fundraising goal.

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ,
Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.
In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
