xercise and good nutrition are two key elements to a healthy lifestyle, for you, for me, for everyone. Few events combine those two elements in the way that the CROP Hunger Walk does. The purpose of the CROP Hunger Walk, held in numerous locations nationwide, is not only to raise money in the fight against local and world hunger, but also to shed light on the impact that malnutrition has on the overall human condition. In Lititz, the annual CROP Walk will be conducted on Sunday, Oct. 22, beginning at 2 p.m. at Lititz Church of the Brethren, 300 W. Orange St., Lititz. The 2023 theme for the event is “Ending Hunger One Step at a Time.” From the church, participants will walk 3 miles to downtown Lititz, turn around at Lititz Springs Park and return to Lititz Church of the Brethren. “Yeah, I do think we take food for

Last year, 14 walkers raised $5,540. This year, the Lititz CROP Hunger Walk is hoping to increase donations by increasing participation.

Last year’s top earners, regulars Earl Ziegler and Ralph Moyer, have committed to return this year. “The CROP Walk is something I’ve done since I was young,” said Sommerhoff, a 47-year-old native of Lititz. “I do it to help raise funds and help others who don’t have enough food. I feel like I’m called by my faith to serve others, and this is one way I can do it.” “There’s also the purpose of educating others,” Sommerhoff added. “The need falls here in our community and in other parts of the world. It’s about energizing people to participate and to support this work.” From 2020 to 2021, the amount that the Lititz CROP Hunger Walk raised in donations jumped from $2,595 to $5,176. “Over the years, there have been fewer people and fewer churches,” said Sommerhoff. “Participation is something we’re trying to work on. It’s great when walkers ask people they know to donate towards their

Functional, beautiful, and historic Organizations partner for Lancaster County Barn Tour BY ANN MEAD ASH

Elaine Bowman, board member with the Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley (HSCV) and a member and former executive board member for the Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County (HPT), had an idea. Having worked on a few church tours with HSCV about a decade ago, she thought she could bring the two organizations together to create a tour of local outbuildings. “I thought,

‘Wouldn’t it be fun to hold a barn tour?’” said Bowman, who mulled the idea over for a bit before bringing it to both organizations in late 2022. Bowman called together a committee that began meeting monthly in January. Members contacted Lancaster County historical societies and municipalities, along with some interested citizens for nominations of barns, and they received more than 100 nominations. “We were looking for not just historical See Barn Tour pg 4

The bond between humans and dogs is different from those that exist between any of God’s other creatures. Puppies with a Purpose harnesses that relationship and even puts it to the test. with a Purpose and their foster dogs receive formal training centered around 10 basic commands. There are also two outings each month where members and their dogs can put some of the things they learned into practice. “We’re trying to expose the dogs to the different sights and sounds and smells that they would encounter as guide dogs,” said Cook. “We’re trying to teach them how to be polite puppies and get them used to everyday things.” Members of Puppies with a Purpose typically welcome their foster dogs into their homes at the age of seven weeks. The future guide dogs are usually either Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, German shepherds or Labrador and golden retriever mixes. “It’s not like having a pet,” said Cook. “It’s training and teaching. You’re making a commitment to do a lot with the dogs. By teaching commands, we’re trying to get back to basics with the dogs. It’s everyday stuff that should help later on as they grow and mature.” There are more than 40 clubs like Lancaster Puppies with a Purpose serving The Seeing Eye in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, New York and Maryland. Founded in 1929 in Nashville, Tenn., The Seeing Eye moved to its current headquarters in Morristown in 1965, and currently about 1,550 people in the United States and Canada use guide dogs from The Seeing Eye. “Believe it or not, not all dogs

The dogs enjoy it.” Cook first became involved with Lancaster Puppies with a Purpose as a way to share an experience with her 8-year-old daughter. That was 15 years ago. Cook’s daughter is now an adult, and the dog Cook is fostering is her 13th. “You know when you get (the dog) that you’re going to give it back,” said Cook. “And you know (the dog) is going to be helping someone. You know the dog is going to allow someone who’s visually impaired this freedom. It’s very gratifying.” For additional information about The Seeing Eye, go to www.seeing eye.org.
