When Carley Bilindabagabo, events coordinator with HOPE International, was asked about the speaker for the 2018 HOPE International breakfast, she responded with enthusiasm. “We have someone special this year: Alex Nuñez, president and CEO of Esperanza International, our partner program in the Dominican Republic,” said a smiling Bilindabagabo. The 2018 breakfast will be held on Friday, Nov. 16, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Doors will open at 7 a.m., and check-in will begin at 7:30 a.m. This year, the event will be held

Through savings groups, Esperanza can provide capital in a commitment to end poverty and foster transformation to those the organization serves. Nuñez began serving Esperanza in March 2012, when she became vice president of public affairs and Caribbean investment. See HOPE Breakfast pg 7

Bruce Holran, then F&M director of public relations, approached then school athletic director Dr. William Marshall with the idea to establish a four-team men’s collegiate basketball tournament early in January. The event would bring people to the college and raise funds for a local nonprofit organization. LMHS Play from pg 1 shortlist for several years. With a cast of 18, an almost completely black-and-white set and costumes, and a couple of unexpected twists near the end, “Baldpate” will play in the LMHS Fine Arts Center, 2176 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 25; Friday, Oct. 26; and Saturday, Oct. 27. The plot centers on writer William Magee, played by Noah Schnabel, who enters into a contest with his friend Irene Bentley, played by Grace Reinhart. The
competition will have Magee writing a 10,000-word story within 24 hours, with Bentley providing him with a place of total solitude to complete the task. Magee heads to Baldpate Inn, a mountain getaway owned by Bentley. He locks himself in, with the understanding that he holds the only key. Almost immediately, Magee begins experiencing strange visitations. Among the intruders, all of whom seem to have keys to the inn, are a politician, a police officer, a hermit, a reporter, and a number of mob-
sters. Magee eventually learns that there are actually seven keys to Baldpate, and in the LMHS production, each key is a different rainbow color to contrast with the set and costumes. One of the challenges of staging the show, according to Sauder, was the decision to go blackand-white. “We need an old-fashioned phone, and we have one, but it is brown,” explained Sauder, who said that his costumer is searching for appropriate clothing, and the crew is painting the set. “The costumes will be stun-

ning,” noted Sauder. Another challenge was introducing students to comedy and dialogue set in the early 1900s. “Since it written in 1913 some of the lines you would not use today,” explained Schnabel. “It’s hard to say the words and put meaning behind them,” he added. “(It’s important to be) able to pronounce words and (convince) the audience that you know what they mean.” It has been interesting for the students to put on the personalities of over-the-top character

roles. Rehearsals have been both fun and challenging, according to Merry Yirga, who plays Edith Quimby, an elderly caretaker. “A lot of us play characters that are very different from ourselves,” she observed. “I play an innkeeper who lives on top of a mountain and flirts with this writer.” Clayton Nafziger, who plays bad guy Jim Cargan, said that he has to think “mean” to get into character. Nafziger, who at 6 feet five inches is making it hard for Sauder to find costumes for him, noted that his size helped him win the part. “I pick up three different people (during the show),”’ said a smiling Nafziger. Willa Beidler, who plays Myra Thornhill, said that the students have been having fun with the outlandish characters and exaggerated scenes. “The character work is (both) fun and difficult,” she noted. “It’s a
satirical show, so you’re taking a melodramatic mystery character and amping it up.” Schnabel added that for audiences, the entire show should be fun. “The audience is drawn in by the humor and the mystery rather than (a) message,” he commented. Sauder has embraced the challenge of introducing the older-style production to students of the current day. He noted that writing the director’s note for the show program has been a challenge. “(The play is) typical George M. Cohan, which means nothing to this generation,” said Sauder. “It does now,” quipped a grinning Yirga. Advance tickets for the play may be purchased at www. lancastermennonite.org/lancaster/ fine-arts/ or by calling 717-7402456. Tickets will be discounted for students.

Artist from pg 1 Lititz Art Association will meet on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. Beth Brunner will present “Concentrate on the Positive,” which will cover the keys to successful composition when creating a piece of art. Brunner’s career in art has began when Brenner was a child in Palmyra, where she painted with her father and took lessons from a local artist. She continued to pursue her art with a degree from Millersville University. Brunner has also worked as a freelance artist, creating logos and a children’s book while living in Oklahoma and New Hampshire. She also taught art education in California, Oklahoma, and New Hampshire. She currently resides in Lititz, where she has her studio. Brunner has worked in various mediums, but acrylics have become her main focus. Her paintings are mostly still-life works that utilize compositions of flowers from her garden and of family antiques. Though she has retired from teaching, Brunner continues to learn and explore new techniques and skills. The presentation is free and open to the public. Membership is open to all interested persons 18 years of age or older. Meetings are held at 6:30 p.m. on the last Tuesday of the month except in July and December. Pictured on front: Beth Brun-

dimensional understanding of David’s creations. “David designed the lettering for a stencil (depending on the subject) of the heart,” explained Patricia, who noted that the cold heart bears images reminiscent of icicles on its surface, the wounded heart bears a gash, and the “hole in my heart” design has a small, round opening in it. Each heart is painted and coated with varnish. Coupled with another piece titled “Love,” which he completed in 2013, David’s work forms a statement about the ways domestic violence and sexual assault can scar hearts. The “Love” painting, which is 88 by 43 inches, appears to be an ode to the motifs of love, but when one looks closely, the border contains statistics about domestic violence against women, sexual assault, teenage pregnancy, and divorce rates, exposing the truth that can be behind the myth. During the exhibit, community members are invited to visit The E and have a photo taken with posters available near the exhibit. One is of a blue heart that reads “NO MORE hardened hearts from sexual assault,” and the other is purple and reads “NO MORE hardened hearts from domestic violence.” Photos may be shared to social media with the hashtag #nomorehardenedhearts. The posters are for sale, and half of
the proceeds from each poster sold will be given to the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV). David, who was a graduate of the York Academy of Art, was working on the plaster of Paris decorations that are part of the “Love” painting when he created his first hardened heart. “He had excess plaster, and he was just throwing it in a candy box,” explained Patricia. “When he tore the (box) away, he (noticed) the texture (of the heart). He thought it had character, and he called it the hardened heart.”
David served as director of education for the Bradley Academy of Visual Arts and fine art department chair for Antonelli Institute of Art and Photography of York. His work has been displayed at Penn State University campuses and the National Society of Painters in Casein and Acrylic in New York City, among many other locations. Readers who would like to know more about the artist and his work may visit www.david leesestudio.com. More information about The E may be found at https://emeralde.org.

Boosters also volunteer time for everything from stage crew to craft services to wardrobe, beginning with uniform fittings and alterations during band camp and continuing throughout the year. “This year we had a team that came together to cut over 100 yards of fabric into more than 250 individual pieces to be able to make the 36 swing flags needed to equip the color guard,” recalled Cressler. “Another crew designed and constructed the on-field props, and others show up every week to load and manage the equipment onto and off of the trucks.” “The Boosters organization works like we do because we have seen what a benefit the marching band program is to our kids,” Cressler said. Exhibit Features Artist’s Work The Art Gallery at United Zion Retirement Community (UZRC), 22 Furnace Hills Pike, Lititz, is featuring Paradise artist Bill Dodds as the UZRC Artist of the Month. Dodds focuses on pen and ink pointillism to bring items in nature to life in his drawings. His work is influenced by growing up in the midst of the Allegheny National Forest. Dodds uses the pen to create the detail and contrast of dark and light areas. Each drawing takes between 40 and 180 hours of work, which means he can finish about three in a year. This summer, Dodds’ artwork changed as the black and white ink drawings began to show small areas of color accents. The

Dodds received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in art education from Pennsylvania State University. During that time, he took up pointillism. However, after school he took a break from it and he only returned to it in his retirement. Dodds’ works may be viewed daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. during the month of October. Bilindabagabo. “It was the only place to buy a snack or bottle of water before getting on the bus, which I thought was genius.” Bilindabagabo said that Lina’s story was especially memorable because Lina’s daughter had also started a business, which now employs Lina’s husband, Felix, who had hurt his back and was unable to perform other work. “(Lina’s) daughter realized that her mother’s colmado always needed paper products like cups and napkins,” explained Bilindabagabo, “But it is hard to get them (in the Dominican Republic).” The daughter, wisely, chose to start her own business buying and reselling paper products at a store not far from the bus station. “The story struck me because the daughter decided to start her own business because she saw her mother do it - the generational effects of entrepreneurship,” commented Bilindabagabo. To add a Dominican flair to the breakfast, Bilindabagabo has arranged for the buffet menu to include coffee and juice from the Dominican Republic, along with eggs, sausage, hash browns, and pancakes. Library System Receives Donation The Library System of Lancaster County has announced that this year Brad Rutter, alltime “Jeopardy!” champion, has donated funds that have been used to support Syndetics Unbound, which is an online catalog enhancement tool that is now available. The Lancaster County native has contributed funds for the past eight years through his Lancaster County Community Foundation donordesignated fund to benefit the public libraries in Lancaster County. The only stipulation by Rutter is that the funds he donates be used to support technology-based services that will
benefit many library users throughout the county. Syndetics Unbound catalog enhancement features include enabling library users to see the cover pictures for items such as books, DVDs and CDs. This way, customers will know exactly what they are requesting. The Readers’ Advisory addon service will give information such as recommendations, what books are in a series, other formats available, related titles and more details about items the library user might like to borrow. Reading levels are now listed by age, grade and Lexile level.
Customers may click on the award and see additional awardwinning titles and their availability. Lexile Measure is a method used by schools to measure a student reader’s ability. In 2013, Rutter’s funds were used to develop the Lancaster County Libraries Mobile App, which is another popular resource for library users to access the online catalog and other electronic resources from their mobile devices. During the past several years, Rutter funded the public libraries’ e-book collection that is accessible online to all Lancaster County residents who have a library card.

Warwick Wins L-L League XC Championship by Vaughn Brown
And the beat goes on for Warwick’s boys as the Warriors, fresh off a Section One championship, wrapped up a League title as well last Tuesday at the Ephrata Middle School. Noah Martin and Connor Shields finished neck-and-neck, going fifth and sixth with respective times of 16:39.1 and 16:39.8, to lead a scoring pack that was only separated by a little over one minute. Parker Keares (18th, 17:08.5), Jeremy Bell (25th, 17:15.9), and David Bach (39th, 17:38.8) joined Martin and Shields in posting points for the Warriors while Jeremiah Hendrix finished 55th overall in 17:57.8, followed by Marcus Wachira (75th, 18:29.2), and Corbin Kilgore (91st, 18:54.5). “Our team is really moving in the right direction and team and individual performances are coming to a peak for the season,” stated head coach Matt Bomberger. “Our boys’ team really came together with our spread from our number one runner to our number five runner and the girls did the same as well.” Along with the boys winning the team gold with 95 points, the girls finished third, scoring 124 points led by Anna Martin who finished sixth
overall with a time of 19:35.5. Adding to the overall team score were Caitlyn Wagner (10th, 20:20.4), Sophia Nau (12th, 20:24.6), Alexa Wenger (37th, 21:19.6), and Jaylyn Wagner (59th, 22:15.6) with a spread of 2:22, while Clara Ford finished 89th overall with a time of 23:23.4, Jill Colebert (93rd,23:31.8), and Alexa Zimmerman (104th, 23:54.6) rounded out the field for Warwick. Bomberger acknowledged the hard work and dedication his team has put in since June workouts began and the results that have come from it. “Nine of our 16 runners that competed set personal records. That hasn’t happened at the League championships in quite some time and they should be very proud of that! The team heads into the district meet this Saturday with a lot of confidence and good energy.” FOOTBALL Conestoga Valley waltzed onto Grosh Field Friday night acting like a team with upset on its mind. After driving downfield on their opening possession of the game and kicking a field goal for a 3-0 lead, the Buckskins turned around and recovered an onside kick. Then, perhaps feeling their oats a bit, they went for it on fourth-and-one at the Warrior’s 45-yard line but were
denied by the Warwick defense. All they managed to do was punch the bear in the face -the bear being Warwick’s offense. The Warriors then erupted for 42 unanswered points on the backs of Nick Fucci, who rushed 23 times for 157 yards and a touchdown, adding two catches for 87 yards, and quarterback Joey McCracken who threw for 230 yards and four touchdowns while going 11-19. “Nick Fucci is a talented RB, he has great vision,” commented head coach Bob Locker. “(The) O line played very well and has been improving each week.” After the stop on fourth down, the Warriors drove 85 yards on 14 plays and scored the go-ahead touchdown when McCracken connected with tight end Haydn Rucci (2-9, TD) from the five-yard line to make it 7-3. Forcing a Buckskin punt, Warwick went back to work and put together a 10 play, 67-yard drive which was capped by a McCracken nine-yard touchdown to make it 14-3. “We were not sharp early on but found our rhythm in the second quarter,” added Locker. “That fourth down stop helped shift the momentum, our offense picked up the pace, and we did some good things.” Those good

MERCHANDISER - Warwick Edition SOCCER After grabbing a share of the Section One crown with Manheim Township and blanking Pequea Valley 1-0 in the League quarterfinals, Warwick’s boys met up with Section Three runner-up Lancaster Mennonite in the semifinals last Tuesday at Conestoga Valley High School. Outshooting the Blazers 8-7, but yielding in corners 11-4 the Warriors could not find the back of the net and were eliminated 2-0. “LMH played solid defense against us, but we did generate a few good

and nine negated his back-to-back birdies on five and six. Making the turn, Fassnacht bore down and turned in seven pars on the back nine with a bogey on the 17th hole standing as his only flaw. Pelensky struggled all through the round with a par on the first hole and another on 13 standing as her best scores for the day. Coming into regionals with an eighth-place finish in districts, the senior carded a 22 over par 94 to finish out her career. FIELD HOCKEY One half was all Warwick needed when it squared off against ELCO in the quarterfinals of the L-L League tournament last Tuesday. Outplaying the Raiders with a 22-3 corner advantage and a 9-3 shot count, Warwick punched its ticket to the semifinals when Caitlyn Grodzicki and Emily Behn posted the lady Warriors to a 3-0 lead before halftime, a score that held through regulation. Grodzicki finished off a rebounded corner shot with 11:56 gone in the game to put Warwick up 1-0 and Behn followed with the first of her two goals six minutes before halftime when she took a corner insertion and fired a rocket into the cage. Her second came with 13 seconds remaining in the half. That win placed Warwick into the semifinals against Penn Manor which overpowered the lady Warriors on the way to posting a 4-0 lead. Grodzicki corner insertion and made it 4-1 when she blasted a shot past Cecily Charles with 22:04 gone in the half. That shot wound up being the only one that Warwick could generate while the Comets plastered Catie Brubaker with 26, of which the Warrior keeper stopped 20. A final goal by Gabby Bitts early in the second half ended the scoring for both teams. VOLLEYBALL Warwick closed out its regular season at home last Wednesday with a 3-0 loss to Penn Manor in a gritty match that saw the home team push the Comets to the edge in the first set before falling 25-23. In the second, Penn Manor pulled away for a 25-18 win, but in the third a tenacious attack by Warwick forced the set to 27-25 in the losing effort. On offense, Jackie Barilar led the lady Warriors at the net with six kills while on defense Rachell Adams recorded two blocks. Warwick put up 502 total yards of offense, the second time in as many weeks they went over 500, with 224 on the ground and 278 through the air while holding the Bucks to 202 total yards and no touchdowns. Conestoga Valley was only able to manage 34 yards on the ground and 168 passing on the night. chances,” noted head coach Gordy Cowher, referencing a shot that caromed off the post and some missed opportunities in front of the Blazer net. Lancaster Mennonite did take advantage, twice in fact. Ben Lefever’s goal in the 15th minute broke the scoreless tie before Mesa Dula added a little insurance in the 56th when Warwick keeper Drew Stief’s block on a corner kick by Tyler Wagner rebounded off the crossbar in front of the goal where Dula was able to head it in. “The bottom line is that when LMH
had their opportunities, they put the ball in the back of the net and when we had our opportunities, we didn’t,” observed Cowher. “Hopefully, as we move forward, we will be more focused so that when those scoring opportunities arise, we will capitalize.” Next, the Warriors face off against Susquehannock to open the District Three tournament. GOLF Two Warwick golfers, Brock Fassnacht and Kathryn Pelensky, earned a trip to the East Regional playoffs which were
held last Monday at Golden Oaks golf course in Fleetwood, with Fassnacht advancing to the PIAA championship. Fassnacht, who finished 13th at districts, shot a front nine 38 and followed with a 37 on the back for a three-over par 75 which put hm in a six-way tie for 12th. The qualifying cut for states was five-over 77. The senior golfer opened the front half by carding par through the first two holes and added two more on seven and eight, but a double bogey on three and bogeys on five

He was rediagnosed with frontotemporal dementia three and a half years later. Frontotemporal dementia is a rare disorder that affects the front (frontal lobes) and the sides (temporal lobes) of the brain. Frontotemporal has a more rapid onset than Alzheimer’s disease. There are no treatments approved by the FDA for frontotemporal
dementia and none that have been shown to be effective. A Race to Remember has helped to raise more than $540,000 for the Alzheimer’s Association to help provide support and to further research to develop treatments and ultimately find a cure. The registration fee will be discounted until Tuesday, Oct. 30. For more information and to register, readers may visit www.lmiadvertising .com/AR2R. ture F&M, Stevens Institute of Technology, Hobart, and Alvernia University. The Terry Green Memorial Tournament for women will include F&M, Elizabethtown College, Washington & Lee, and Haverford College. The 39th annual Extravaganza will be held in F&M’s Mayer Gymnasium, 415 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster, on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Nov. 16, 17, and 18. A complete game schedule may be found at www.lancasterrotary.org/event/ basketball-extravaganze-2018. Since 1992, when Marshall joined the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the event has been linked to the group. Following the partnership, both organizations worked to grow the tournament, eventually moving to the weekend before Thanksgiving to “tip off the college basketball season. The tournament was only for men until 2006, when the Professor Terry Green Memorial Tournament added women’s teams to the mix. Proceeds from the Basketball Extravaganza will benefit the United Way’s Rotary Club of Lancaster Summer Youth Experience, a program that works to keep Lancaster youths engaged and productive. The Summer Youth Experience includes activities that are carefully selected for their benefits to
the end of the spring semester and the return to school in the fall. The goal is to improve children’s lives and to reduce the likelihood of students dropping out of school. Current club president Althea Ramsay Carrigan noted that the organization is pleased to be able to support the program. “We’re incredibly proud of (the Summer Youth Experience), where youths in Lancaster can learn how to make friends, challenge themselves, improve self-esteem, and learn new skills to close the summer learning gap, Carrigan said. As the flagship fundraiser for the Rotary Club of Lancaster, the Basketball Extravaganza raises up to $50,000 in net income yearly. Over the 38 years it has existed, the event has raised more than $600,000. Almost all the funds that are raised are returned to the local nonprofit community. In addition to the Summer Youth Experience, the event has helped to fund International Medical Relief, including eye and dental care in international locations; the Elizabeth Martin Elementary School Park; School District of Lancaster programs that encourage literacy; Rotary Youth Leadership Camp; International Youth Study Exchange; and a variety of scholarships and grants.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) is partnering with the Boys and Girls Club to launch its first-ever thirdthrough fifth-grade team at its clubhouse this fall. By hosting a team at the Boys and Girls Club, GOTR is acting on its commitment to ensure that its programs are accessible to anyone who wants to participate. Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological, and physical competencies to successfully navigate life experiences. Teams of 15 girls from third through eighth grades meet after school to learn critical life skills and build physical fitness. The culminating event is a celebratory 5K, which the girls complete with an adult running buddy. This season, 800 girls on 61 teams ranging in ages from 8 to 14 are participating in the 10-week program. The girls on these teams will learn about self-esteem, positive body image, and setting and achieving goals through a curriculum that combines experiential games with physical activity to address the
whole girl’s health: physical, emotional, mental, social, and spiritual. Hundreds of volunteer coaches lead the curriculum. The goal is to provide access by ensuring GOTR is available where girls gather, in their community or school. GOTR is mindful of girls with physical and cognitive disabilities and strives to provide curriculum modifications when needed. All girls will have a coach who has been trained to understand social context, create positive inclusive environments, and build genuine relationships. GOTR is currently recruiting coaches who introduce diversity to the coaching team. Readers may visit the website for more information or contact Jennifer West at jwest@gotrlancaster.org. The season-culminating 5K event is open to anyone who wants to run or walk. The Girls on the Run 5K will take place on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 9 a.m. To register as an individual or a team of five or more people or to volunteer, readers may visit www.gotrlancaster.org/5K.
