revor Evans thoroughly enjoys playing the position of quarterback. He likes helping his team even more. A senior on the Warwick football team, Evans is back to playing his natural position again after trying other roles. High school football teams typically put their most athletic players at quarterback because they give the team its best opportunity to win. “I’m happy about my season,” said Evans. “I’ve done the most I can with this team. I had to adapt to a lot of changes, and I’m just getting used to the changes now. I did it for the team. The team needed it.” “He’s willing to do his best for the football team,” said Warwick head coach Bob Locker of Evans. “His goal is to be the best quarterback he can be and also to be the best person he could be. Here’s a kid who puts ‘we’ above ‘me.’ This is someone I’d like to have on my

Lititz UMC’s Trunk or Treat is chilling in a good way

When she was a child, Tess Gerritsen couldn’t resist a good mystery book. “The first mystery novels I read were Nancy Drew books,” recalled the New York Times bestselling author of more than 30 novels. “I remember thinking, ‘I want to do that. I want to tell those kinds of stories.’” Becoming an author wasn’t a straight course for Gerritsen, who will headline the Council of Friends of Public Libraries’ fall author event at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 9.
“Being from a practical AsianAmerican family, my parents wanted me to do something more traditional for a career,” she said. She graduated from Stanford University and went to medical school, eventually becoming a doctor. Her desire for storytelling never faltered, however, and when she was on maternity leave after the birth of her first son, she wrote her first novel, “Call After Midnight.” It was published in 1987, and by her third book, “Harvest,” Gerritsen made her New York Times bestseller debut in 1996. football team.” Evans grew up playing quarterback, from his early days in midget football to junior high and even into the beginning of his high school career. But as a sophomore, Evans found himself behind star quarterback Jack Reed, who graduated last year. Evans responded by becoming a wide receiver and an all-LancasterLebanon League safety. And when Locker turned to him this past offseason, Evans answered the call. “At the end of the season, we looked around and didn’t have a quarterback in the pipeline,” said Locker. “(Evans) is an excellent athlete. He’s embraced what we’ve asked him to do. He handled it quite well. He’s one of our captains. He’s a tremendous leader.” “Going into my sophomore year, I knew Jack was pretty good,” said Evans. “I just accepted that. I was willing to play receiver for Coach Locker, but he said he needed me to back up Jack (as well). I accepted that role.”

that God can do big things. It’s about people getting together. Everyone’s focus is on shining the love of Jesus. We choose not to be scary. We’re very family friendly, because God is in all things.” The last Saturday in October promises to be a fun-filled evening complete with activities, conversation and fellowship. There will be games, refreshments and music, while members of the local police department, fire department, local businesses and ministries are expected to be on hand. “Going house to house is fun, but not everyone can participate,” said Rosario. “This is a safe place for kids to trick-or-treat. Sometimes with an event like this, it allows the community to be together in one place. There can be hanging-out time. It’s a time of fellowship and community. We have a lot of people meeting up here and sometimes making new friends. There’s very little stress or strain.” If children are the stars of Lititz United Methodist Church’s Trunk or Treat show, then car trunks are the co-stars. Kids are welcome to
visit each of the 15 decorated trunks and help themselves to treats, candy and surprises. “Some members of our congregation really enjoy decorating their trunks,” said Rosario. “We see everything from fall decorations to interactive trunks. Some have games. It’s all about the creativity of the trunk holder.” “Our church has a lot of love to give,” continued Rosario. “This event is just about giving and sharing the love of Jesus. We want to create a safe, fun and exciting place for families to come. The parents also get to connect. We’re honored that God uses us in this way.” The Trunk or Treat evening is also an outreach of Lititz United Methodist’s children and youth ministries program. About 40 kids are involved in the program, from infants to high school seniors. “The goal of any outreach is to show God’s love in a giving way,” said Rosario. “Everyone who comes here, we want them to feel valued. To reach out in this small way is truly a blessing. God can sometimes use us to help others feel His love.” “It really comes down to relationships, first and foremost with God, but also the relationships with themselves,” Rosario added. “It’s helping them to know who God made them to be and how valuable they are. The goal is to be that support and to help them navigate all that.”

Trevor Evans from pg 1
Senior Trevor Evans has played multiple roles for the Warwick football team.
Despite “working as hard as I ever have to get ready” in the offseason, Evans has faced some challenges. After opening their season with a 17-14 upset victory over highly regarded Cocalico, the Warriors stood at 2-6 overall and 2-3 in Section Two of the L-L as of Oct. 13. Through his first eight games, Evans had 11 touchdown passes and two rushing touchdowns, but he also threw 12 interceptions. “I feel like I can do whatever it takes to win,” said Evans. “I’m coachable. You can teach me any position, and I’ll learn it. I’m a straight-up athlete. I like to take charge on the field. I think a lot of players look to
me to make the calls. It’s huge to have chemistry with a lot of your players.” “He’s a very good athlete. That’s why he’s there,” said Locker. “He runs well, and he can throw. He was our best option; there were no decisions. We knew if it wasn’t perfect that Trevor was going to go at it. He gave us the best chance to be successful.” Evans said he’d like to play football in college at the Division II or III level at safety, not quarterback. “He’s a good student,” said Locker. “He’s a very polite young man. He’s very optimistic. He never loses sight of his desire to succeed. He’s just a real fine young man.”

Author from pg 1 heart, and she didn’t plan to return to medicine. “ We moved from Honolulu to Maine, and I was so determined to focus on my writing, I decided not to apply for a Maine medical license,” she said. She took what she knew from the medical field and put it into her books, which have been published in 40 countries and often have a tie to medicine. Publisher’s Weekly dubbed Gerritsen the “medical suspense queen,” but she also made a name for herself in the industry for creating the “Rizzoli & Isles” series, focused on a partnership between two crime-solving women. The book series became a global hit and inspired the long-running TNT series of the same name. Gerritsen will discuss her latest book, “The Spy Coast,” at her November talk, where she’ll be joined on stage by WITF’s Scott LaMar. “I don’t do book readings, because I think they’re kind of boring,” she said with a laugh. “What I like to talk about is, ‘ Where do ideas come from? What is my process of approaching writing a new book? How do I develop characters? How do I keep going when I hit a wall?’” Proceeds from Gerritsen’s appearance will benefit all of the public libraries in Lancaster County, said Mary Ann Steinhauer, leader of the Council of Friends. “When I read Tess’ bio, I realized how unbelievable she is,” Steinhauer said. “It just goes to show you that her early passion manifested

itself as an adult, and she was able to put that passion, along with her education and training as a doctor, into doing something she loves.” Gerritsen said she hopes her story will inspire others to follow their dreams, noting that she often hears from readers, many of whom have done just that. Sometimes, however, the stories she hears are sadder. One reader told her he’d been an engineer all his life, but he had wanted to become a fashion designer. “He told me he really regretted his career choice,” she said. “I like to tell people, ‘Find a way to make what you want to do work for your own family circumstances. Carve out some time to do it.’” The Council of Friends event will be held at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Tickets will include a copy of “The Spy Coast” and may be purchased at https://lancaster libraries.org/fall-author -event.
