Servant Stage Schedules First Look For 2021 BY ANN MEAD ASH

ast Servant Stage First Look Extravaganzas have attracted up to 1,000 people. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s event will be held virtually, but Servant Stage executive director Jonathan Bauer is thinking positively about the impact of the reveal that will introduce the organization’s 2021 season. “The good thing about holding it online is that we are expecting more than 10,000 people (to view it), said Bauer. “We have been doing virtual concerts all summer, and we have gotten really good response to that, he added, noting that the shows have averaged 10,000 views per concert. The First Look Extravaganza will air live via Facebook and YouTube by searching for “Servant Stage at those sites and via https://servantstage.org on Friday, Nov. 20, at 7 p.m. The free show will be presented in coordination with the Extraordinary Give, an online giving event hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation

including artistic director Wally Calderon and Bauer, will take turns hosting the show live from Alliance Church. The presentation will feature both live aspects and prerecorded segments. “During the few weeks leading up (to the show), we will prerecord a few (performances) with smaller groups, explained Bauer. “ We will have more than 100 performers on that evening, but for safety reasons not all 100 performers will be there in person. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, Bauer sees a mix of virtual performances and live shows. “We are hoping to ease back into live shows, he said, noting that during the first three months of 2021, shows will be virtual. “As we get into the spring, we have planned smaller productions to ease back in and to socially distance the cast, he said. Bauer added that the organization has scheduled shows in a number of large parks next summer in hopes that live outdoor performances may be held at that time.

Hybrid Homeschooling Out Of A Mother’s Love Grows Firm Foundations Academy BY ANN MEAD ASH

Several years ago, when Sarah Northrup was homeschooling her children, she discovered her daughter had dyslexia. “(It was) impossible to find help and support, recalled Northrup. “I felt I was very isolated. Northrup, who already had a degree in elementary and special education, responded by turning to the National Institute of Learning

According to Bauer, the reveal will include highlights of performances from the dozens of shows Servant Stage has planned for the next year. “(The presentation) usually ties in with a celebration of the past season as well, so there will be both a look back and a look ahead, shared Bauer. The look ahead will include a variety of genres to appeal to a wide audience. “ We have some big epic- type Broadway musicals, and we have some revue-type shows where all the focus is on the entertainment aspect, said Bauer, who noted that a few smaller Broadway productions he called “dramadies will be featured. “They are family friendly and range between dramatic and comedic, he explained, adding that about half the season’s shows will be youth theater productions. According to many travel polls, travelers are choosing small-town destinations for getaways and vacations. Not just now, because of COVID, but into the spring and summer of 2021. Fewer crowds, less traffic, unique culture, and friendly locals make visiting obscure locations more desirable than ever. As the editor of Where & When

Development at Virginia University in Virginia Beach, Va., where she received her certification as an education therapist. She began tutoring other homeschooled students who had dyslexia and other learning issues. “I found that many of the students I was serving (had) parents who were feeling a lot like I was feeling,” said Northrup. “I thought, ‘I can help three kids at a time … or I can start this program to serve a broader population.’ It had

been on my heart for a very long time.” In fall of 2019, Northrup opened Firm Foundations Academy, a hybrid homeschooling program, which meets at Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, 110 Durlach Road, Ephrata, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. Currently, the school serves a total of more than 50 students in grades one through 10, with the goal of adding grades 11 and 12 in the next few years.

WARWICK EDITION

“Our goal is for students in 11th and 12th grades to have partnerships to take classes at Lancaster Bible College or to have internships so they can go out to the community to get job training,” Northrup noted. “We offer a full scope of classes,” said Northrup, who is head of school for the academy. She listed English, math science, history, art, music, and Bible, among the classes, noting that she tries to offer an eclectic mix taught according to classical educational philosophy with a biblical worldview. “Our high school kids are doing leadership classes,” she noted. “They are learning about character development and then doing service projects out in the community every month.” As a hybrid, the academy represents a partnership between parents and teachers. “It’s teacher directed and parent supported,” explained Northrup. “The teachers supply all the content and lesson plans for parents.” Northrup explained that a reading assignment taught in school would be tied to components the student completes at home and then reinforced at school ending in the student

writing a paper on the topic at home. All of the more than a dozen teachers are credentialed and experienced, and Northrup and one other are certified in educational therapy. “We are striving to serve kids that are excelling academically, but also those who are (challenged),” said Northrup, who noted that weekly tutoring is offered. The school follows Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for COVID-19. To keep communication flowing in the drop-off program, assignment sheets are provided to parents weekly, and Northrup sends out a monthly newsletter. A fellowship of mothers meets twice a month at the school to pray. “Our vision is threefold,” said Northrup. “We look to equip students … encourage parents, and cultivate hope.” Shelleen Weaver of New Holland is sending her son to Firm Foundations this fall. “My son is thriving in this environment, and I couldn’t be more grateful,” reported Weaver. More information about the program is available at www.firmfoundations academy.com.

This year, it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and the people you care about from the flu. It’s possible to get both COVID-19 and the flu at the same time — and to spread those viruses to the people around you. But you can greatly reduce your chance of catching the flu and spreading it to others by getting a flu shot. And if you do catch the flu, the vaccine can reduce the severity of your illness. We’re fighting two health threats this season, so every little bit helps. One little shot can make a big difference.

When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the hiring and dayto-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. W hile Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Dear Brother or Sister in Christ,

Across the country, rioters are burning bibles and American flags. They are burning churches, businesses, and government buildings. They are a acking and bea ng bystanders that don’t agree with them. Radical mayors and governors are encouraging the rioters by defunding police departments, resul ng in rising crime rates na onwide. Worse, they’ve exploited the coronavirus epidemic as an excuse to force churches to close while leaving Walmarts, casinos, liquor stores and abor on clinics open. Each of us has the power to stop this.

In the United States, 40% of Chris ans do not vote.

If God did not want us to have an ac ve role in His plans, He would not have called us to ac on repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revela on, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Ma hew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our na on stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to jus fy inac on. Chris ans o en mes ignore ge ng involved in the vo ng process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. However, standing in the gap is the only way to stop this storm. Many Chris ans do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is me to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Ini ally, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.

Here’s what you can do today to save the country from violent mobs, immorality, and evil: 1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you be er understand the op ons Pennsylvania offers: 717-690-1620. 2. Talk to everyone about why you are vo ng and why they should too. 3. Pray for our na on and our na on’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day a er the 2020 elec on wishing you had done more to save your community and your country. Making History Fun BY ANN MEAD ASH

According to Adam Zurn, his website, Uncharted Lancaster, is known for two things. “One side is history, where I highlight fascinating local history people might not be familiar with,” he said. “The other side is an adventure side.” Zurn’s adventures may end with plastic gold coins or fake gems, but he knows it is the excitement of deciphering clues to be the first to unlock the riddles that really thrills adventurers. On Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1:30 p.m., Zurn will present “Ghost Stories and Tales of Adventure With Uncharted Lancaster” via Zoom as the guest of the Lititz Historical Foundation. Zurn plans to share local legends and horrific tales associated with the River Hills area of Lancaster County, which is now partially owned by the Lancaster Conservancy and is home to Shenks Ferry Wildflower Preserve. Zurn, who lives in the southern part of the county, will share his knowledge of the River Hills area near the Susquehanna River. “ We have gorges and ravines and hills to climb,” he said, noting that Shenks Ferry in

Conestoga Township was once a thriving village. “Today it is nothing but forest,” Zurn stated, adding that the area is now owned by the Lancaster Conservancy. “It was a vibrant community.” Zurn said that from the mid-1800s until the 1940s, Shenks Ferry included a school, a church, a post office, and lots of houses. “There was a ferry crossing (at the Susquehanna River) there,” shared Zurn. “Later they dredged coal from the Susquehanna River.” According to Zurn, the operation removed coal dust that had washed down from the coal regions after decades of coal mining from the river. In 1972, Hurricane Agnes changed the riverbed, making the dredging operation obsolete. The presentation was originally scheduled on March 14, but COVID-19 restrictions resulted in postponing the event more than once. “Finally, Cory (Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation), decided to do it via Zoom,” Zurn said. “Since it is (being held) pretty close to Halloween, I will include some ghost stories and spooky legends.” One such event that occurred in River Hills was an enormous explosion that shattered windows more than a mile away. “On June 9, 1906, at 12:42 p.m., a dynamite factory (C. R. McAfee

Pauline H. Engle from pg 2

The Lititz Historical Foundation will host Adam Zurn of Uncharted Lancaster in a Zoom presentation called “Ghost Stories and Tales of Adventure.”

Powder & Oil Co.) exploded at Shenks Ferry,” said Zurn. The blast, which involved about 2,500 pounds of dynamite, blew up a building known as the punch house, which is where the dynamite was placed in paper tubes to be packed in 50-pound wooden cases. “Eleven men were killed,” said Zurn. According to reports, the explosion was heard as far north as Manheim Township. Zurn noted that families are often inspired to go exploring based on his presentation. “I get messages from people who say, ‘My kid doesn’t like walking to the mailbox … but he walked 4 miles today and never complained, and it was all because we were searching for treasure.’” The presentation is free; however, the Zoom link is limited to 100 participants, so

registration on a first-come, first-served basis is necessary. Readers who wish to register may search for “Ghost Stories and Tales of Adventure With Uncharted Lancaster” at www.eventbrite.com. The program will begin at 1:30 p.m., but the Zoom session with pre-show entertainment will start at 1 p.m.
