Warwick to explore Narnia in “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe”
BY JEFF FALK
In live theater, there exists a special relationship between the actors and actresses and the audience. If the performers pour enough of themselves into their characters, the audience can be whisked away to another place and time.
That’s exactly what the performers of Warwick High School’s upcoming fall play are going for.
“This show is a heartwarming show appealing for all ages, young and old.”
“(The actresses and actors are) running on adrenaline, and I think that adrenaline hits its peak during the shows,” said Connie Hilliar, the director of Warwick High School’s presentation of “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.” “I don’t usually worry about the energy that comes from the audience, but the more people you get, the better the performance. The audience is just as important as the actions and the hard work. Whatever the message is, people are going to interpret it differently. But hopefully it will be uplifting for all, the kids and the audience.”
Adapted from the novel by C.S. Lewis, “The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe” will be performed at Warwick High School’s Performing Arts Center, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Friday, Nov. 8, at 7 p.m.; Saturday,
Nov. 9, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.; and Sunday, Nov. 10, at 2 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the box office an hour before the show.
The performance will consist of an hourlong first act, a 15-minute intermission and a 30-minute second act.
“It’s about good versus evil,” said Hilliar. “During World War II, four children enter Narnia through a wardrobe. According to the prophecy, the four children will defeat the White Witch and rule Narnia. It talks about how
leadership is so important and that leaders need good people and good people need leaders. I thought it was a good message for right now. I wanted it to be something that resonates with the world today.”

It’s a competitive world out there. It’s a world that both demands and produces alternatives and choices.
Lititz Christian School (LCS) has carved out its own place in the education system through attention to detail, a holistic approach and community service.
“It’s tough to stand out,” said
Ross McCracken, who’s been LCS’ advancement coordinator for a year. “We want to work with Warwick, Linden Hall and LAMS (Lititz Area Mennonite School) to give every single person in the Lititz community everything they possibly need. It’s just about giving great options for everyone. We don’t see ourselves as an option; we want to see ourselves as the option. We want to serve our community.

The local nonprofit is adding staff members, adding programs and bringing more individuals under its umbrella, all in an attempt to satisfy needs and perform greater good.
“Over our first 26 years, we created the organization, built programs and established ourselves,” said Risa Paskoff, who’s been Aaron’s Acres’ executive director from the start. “We’re now taking it to the next level. This is a major step for us. We want to present ourselves more professionally. This expansion is going to be on so many different levels. One of our dreams is to

We want to make our kids aware that there’s a whole big world out there.”
Located at 300 W. Orange St., Lititz, LCS is a faithbased educational institution for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. LCS also operates an early learning center for infants, toddlers, preschoolers and prekindergarten students at Hosanna! A Fellowship of Christians, 29 Green Acre Road, Lititz.
“Our purpose is to meet families and students where they are,” said McCracken. “Being a small school, we have flexibility with how we educate students. We cover everything - their social needs, their spiritual needs, their academic needs. We’re looking at the whole student and the family. We partner with families.”
There are 227 students, mainly from Lititz, Ephrata, Manheim, Manheim Township, the city of Lancaster and south Lebanon County, enrolled at LCS for the 2024-25 school year, an increase of 53 students over last year. LCS’ early learning center consists of 107 younger students.
“We moved to our new location across from Warwick three years ago, and I think people see us now,” said McCracken. “I think we run a great program. I think word of mouth is our best advertising. And I think people are happy. We focus on retention, and if people are happy, our retention rate is going to grow. Our retention rate is 92%.”
In addition to a rigorous curriculum, LCS offers extracurricular activities like interscholastic sports; student government; programs in the arts, music and theater; National Honor Society; boys’ and girls’ Bible study groups; and other clubs. Part of the graduation requirements for LCS students is the completion of 80 hours of community service.
“We want to instill in our kids the mindset that the world is bigger than them and that people need people,” said McCracken. “You feel good when you serve; you feel fulfilled. It’s important for us to be more than takers and to be passionate. When you walk through these doors, you’ll be loved, you’ll be cared for, you’ll be challenged and

you’ll be empowered.”
LCS, which was founded in 1978, employs a total of 75 individuals at its school and early learning center and maintains a 14-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio. Nearly 95% of LCS students receive some type of financial aid for tuition.
“What we have is a staff and faculty who are here for the same mission,” said McCracken. “They’re going to get to know the families. It’s a staff that’s fully bought in, and they’re here because they want to be here. Our teachers get to know the students, and that helps us carry out the mission.”

Dear Brother or Sister in Christ, In the United States, 40% of Christians do not vote.
If God did not want us to have an active role in His plans, He would not have called us to action repeatedly throughout Scripture. Again and again, from Genesis to Revelation, He calls on His people to act, to stand against evil, and to stand up for the needy and vulnerable (Isaiah 6:8, Matthew 28:18-20, Ephesians 5:11, Proverbs 29:2, Proverbs 31:8-9). If we sit on the sidelines while every good thing our nation stands for is destroyed, we will have violated far more Scripture than the handful of passages that may be misused to justify inaction.
Christians oftentimes ignore getting involved in the voting process for several reasons: (1) they don’t believe their vote counts, (2) they have been misinformed, or (3) they have never done it; therefore, it’s hard to break the ice. We encourage you to pray and ask God to help you break free from these fears. We are all called upon to do the right thing.
Many Christians do not vote because of pressure from their church and community. It is time to fully reverse that habit. We are all called upon to do the right thing. The hard part is finding the courage to stand up, to stand in the gap. Initially, you may be judged for doing so. But standing in the gap for good is the only way to stop this storm.
Here’s what you can do today to save the country:
1. You can vote early by mail, or in-person. Call us and we’ll help you better understand the options Pennsylvania offers: 717-403-7041.
2. Talk to everyone about why you are voting and why they should too.
3. Pray for our nation and our nation’s leaders. Please act. You don’t want to wake-up the day after the 2024 election wishing you had done more to save your community and your country.

Highland Presbyterian Church Dorothy Rose Smith Concert Series presents... U.S. Naval Academy Orchestra & Mariachi Band under the direction of Monte Maxwell
SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 3 • 4 PM 500 East Roseville Rd., Lancaster
Located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, Aaron’s Acres supports and provides recreational programs for children and young adults with disabilities like autism, Down syndrome, epilepsy, spina bifida and cerebral palsy, as well as their families. Aaron’s Acres’ programs, some of which are seasonal in nature, emphasize socialization and communication skills.
Since its inception in 1998, Aaron’s Acres has focused on Lancaster, Dauphin, Berks, York, Lebanon and Perry County individuals who are between the ages of 5 and 21 and have disabilities. But Aaron’s Acres’ new programming, which will begin in November, will continue the nonprofits’ more recent efforts to reach individuals with disabilities who are up to age 40.
“There’s this huge need,” said Paskoff. “The need is created by people who are graduating from high school. We’re adding programs and a lot more ages, and we’re hoping to continue to add more programs. We are being true to who we are by continuing to meet the mission. We are responding.”
By adding more times and making programs more available to older individuals with disabilities, Aaron’s Acres is expanding
The new programming will allow Aaron’s Acres to serve another 25 individuals with disabilities between the ages of 21 and 40.
“In Lancaster County, a good number of people know about us,” said Paskoff, “but we definitely need to do better in other counties. One of our goals is to expand our footprint, so people know who we are and what we do.”
Aaron’s Acres, which is overseen by a board of directors, is also in the process of hiring a new fulltime program coordinator and a new part-time staff member. Those hires will push Aaron’s Acres’ number of employees to seven.
Aaron’s Acres maintains a 1-to-1 or a 1-to-2 staffto-client ratio.
“The excitement comes from taking the next step,” said Paskoff. “We’re growing and responding to the need. We’re hearing from families, and we want to respond. (Parents and families) want to have the youth programs for younger children and programs for when (their children) graduate.”

Acclaimed writer and comedian Claire Berger will be at St. Luke’s United Church of Christ, 222 N. Broad St. (Route 501 North), Lititz, on Sunday, Nov. 3, at 3 p.m. Berger will talk about her new book, “How Much Is Enough? - Getting More by Living With Less.”
The book is a combination of the memoir and self-help genres that invites audiences to join the author in the search for “enough” in all aspects of life - health, money, family, success and food. After writing the book, Berger launched a nationwide series of live events to start a conversation that features thought-provoking questions and creative prompts for deeper personal reflection. Audiences are expected to leave these events with a renewed appreciation for all that they are and all that they have, which is often more than enough. There is no charge for the event, but the church asks that guests let them know in advance if they plan to attend. To reserve a spot, call the church at 717-626-7100 or email church@stlukesucc.com.

In nominating the bank for the award, Gagnon stated that corporate executives, managers and co-workers all sent cards, letters and other items to him and unit members during his most recent deployment. Bank personnel also maintained contact with his family, providing gift cards and support to his wife and children.
Fulton Bank also provides benefits to Guard and Reserve members. Deployed service members receive 52 weeks of differential pay while maintaining family health, retirement and investment benefits.
The bank’s nomination
was selected from the 30 nationwide finalists.
Numerous Fulton Bank supervisors have received a Patriot Award, Seven Seals Award and Above and Beyond Awards. They have also attended an ESGR Boss Lift event and awards luncheon for which they received a Pennsylvania ESGR Certificate of Support.
ESGR exists to foster a culture in which all employers support and value the employment and military service of members of
the National Guard and Reserve in the United States. ESGR facilitates and promotes a cooperative culture of employer support for National Guard and Reserve service by developing and advocating mutually beneficial initiatives, recognizing outstanding employer support, increasing awareness of applicable laws and policies, resolving potential conflicts between employers and their service members and acting as the employers’ principal advocate within DOD.
Participants in the awards ceremony were (from left) John Glover, Lisa Johanning, Lisa DeCoste, Col. Brett Gagnon, Natasha Luddington and Curt Myers.

“I’ve got a lot of seasoned actors and actresses,” said Hilliar. “These kids leave me, and they go to band. These kids have rigorous classes at school. They’re here all day. They are very, very involved. That will give you an idea of the kind of kids I have. They’re amazing. One of the skills they learn is how to budget (their) time.”
“This show is a heartwarming show appealing for all ages, young and old,” said Tya Wolgemuth, a student assistant director.

“(The performers) love being in front of the audience,” said Hilliar. There’s something to be said for that feeling. It’s the love of the stage. There’s also a camaraderie here; they’re together and they work it. It takes skills to be in front of people and deal with pressure. They’re all skills you need to be successful in the business world and everyday life. I know kids who take that with them. That confidence, that stage presence, they carry that with them.”
The student performers’ hard work on the fall play began on Sept. 9 with tryouts, read-throughs and rehearsals. All those intensive after-school practices, the tweaks and the fine-tunings have been in preparation for these upcoming four live performances.

It was later discovered that she was kidnapped and killed on Beechdale Road by Justo Smoker, Shertzer’s uncle.
The book “Beechdale Road” is the family’s attempt to share its story of grief, anger and pain but also unexplainable grace, kindness and mercy at the hands of the Amish community.

It’s only October, but Nancy Husser is already thinking about Santa. More specifically, she’s focused on the Santa Run and Walk, a 5K organized by the Manheim Lions Club. The race, which encourages participants to dress in Santa costumes or other holiday garb, will
CENTERVILLE BULK FOODS
take place on Saturday, Dec. 7. It will begin in Manheim Square at 8:30 a.m.
“The Santa 5K is a fun event,” Husser said. “We start with Christmas music in the square all morning until the start of the race. The 5K course takes you through the west side of Manheim. We do encourage residents to come out and cheer the participants on.”
The course is relatively flat, she shared, with a hill around the 2-mile mark. Both walkers and runners are encouraged to participate. “We have a range of participants from (ages) 6 to 76,” Husser said. “We will have bananas, water and chocolate milk for all finishers. Plus, this year we will have cash prizes for the top three overall male and female runners as well as medals for various age groups.”
The first Santa Run began nine years ago, coordinated by Reenie Ober, who at that time was the executive director of the Manheim Downtown
Giant
from pg 9
In addition, Snipes Farm and Education Center received an additional $5,000 through an online Community Award. Kidz Power Pacs - Community Combined Ministries also received an additional
Development Group. “She organized the first Santa 5K, and then the Manheim Lions Club has been sponsoring it every year since then,” Husser said.
Whether people are participating or attending as spectators, the Santa Run will offer an entertaining experience, she said. “It is just a lot of fun to do something on a December morning and then to visit all the shops in town, have breakfast and just enjoy Manheim in general,” Husser shared. “It is just a fun community event in Manheim, and it just gets you into the Christmas spirit. Just come out and feel the Christmas spirit.”
The cost of registration for the race will increase after Friday, Nov. 1. People age 15 and older who register before Friday, Nov. 15, may receive a Santa suit or a quarter-zip pullover, and youths age 14 and younger may receive a long-sleeve T-shirt and a Santa hat if registration is received before that date. Race-day registration will be accepted beginning at 7 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, located at 48 Market Square, but will not include a Santa suit or sweatshirt. To register for the race, visit www.runsignup.com and search for “Manheim Santa 5K Run and Walk.”
$5,000 after being named the recipient of the Giant Choice Award, which was determined by team members from the Giant Company.
The Giant Company held its first Make a Difference
Challenge in 2023 as a way to honor the company’s legacy of giving by supporting organizations that are feeding the future and promoting healthier people and a healthier planet.
Tea raises money for the Lititz Public Library
The Jane Austen Society of Lancaster County held a tea in September as a fundraiser to thank the Lititz Public Library for its partnership throughout the years.
The event, which included a prize drawing and silent auction of many items donated by the local business community, netted $3,250. Genevieve Wimer, president of the Jane Austen Society, presented a check in the amount of the proceeds to the library director Carolyn Reiste.
In 2002, Wimer wrote a sequel to Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” naming her work “Honor and Humility.” After giving a talk on her book at the Lititz Public Library, she founded the Jane Austen Society of
Lancaster County, which meets at the library on the third Tuesday of each month from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Meetings cover topics such as Jane Austen’s novels, her characters, and the Regency Period in history, and they include activities that encourage the group to learn not just about
Jane Austen but also about each other. New members are welcome to attend the meetings where they may discuss all things Austen and enjoy a cup of tea. For more information, visit www.lititzlibrary. org, stop by the library at 651 Kissel Hill Road or call 717-626-2255.
