“A children’s story that can only be enjoyed by children is not a good children’s story in the slightest” is a sentiment frequently attributed to C. S. Lewis. Connie Hilliar, director of the Warwick High School (WHS) presentation of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” referenced the quote when talking about the upcoming production. “To me that is the epitome of what we’re trying to do (with this play),” said Hilliar. “I want to reach out to all age groups.” WHS will bring “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” to the WHS Performing Arts Center, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz, on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2 and 3, at 7 p.m. and on Sunday, Nov. 4, at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at the door prior to performances. Ticket prices will be discounted for students and senior citizens.

The story, based on the children’s book by Lewis, revolves around the four Pevensie children: Lucy, played by Elise White; Edmund played by Aaron Dickinson; Susan, played by Alaina Fry; and Peter, played by Derek Knudson. The children have been removed from London during World War II as the city is bombed by Germany. They find safety but little amusement in the country home of a professor friend of their parents until one day when the youngest, Lucy, opens a wardrobe and discovers a fantasyland called Narnia, where it is always winter, but never Christmas. The children embark on an adventure that brings them into contact with a number of mythical creatures and a White Witch, portrayed by Stella Newman. The White Witch rules the land instead of the rightful king, Aslan the Lion, played by Bryce Pfeiff. A great battle ensues as the children join forces See WHS Play pg 13

Members of the cast of the Warwick High School production of “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe” include (from left) Bryce Pfeiff as Aslan, Alaina Fry as Susan, Derek Knudson as Peter, Elise White as Lucy, Aaron Dickinson as Edmund, Stephen Quinones as the Dwarf, and Stella Newman as the White Witch. The show will be staged at the school on Nov. 2, 3, and 4.

Hope For The Holidays Addictions Workshop Scheduled

“We try to live out the parable of the Good Samaritan. We recognize people … who are hurting and suffering in our communities. We meet them where they’re at, and we respond with generosity and compassion,” said Nate Hoffer, chief executive officer of Good Samaritan Services. Good Samaritan, with locations in Ephrata, Lancaster, Coatesville, and Phoenixville, was founded as the Good Samaritan Shelter in 2002 when several Phoenixville-area churches joined forces to help area residents who were struggling, especially with housing. The Ephrata location provides an 8,000square-foot homeless shelter to as many as 35 women and children per day. The Phoenixville shelter for single See Good Samaritan pg 2

In late 2016 when TTC/Potter’s House approached leaders at Conestoga Church of the Brethren about the possibility of holding a two-part educational program concerning the heroin epidemic in Lancaster County, church members responded. “It’s needed in the community,” said pastor Jere Cassel. The first effort led to a second collaborative workshop in April of this year. According to Cassel, church members then suggested a fall workshop. Cassel met with TTC/Potter’s House ministry director Lanny Millette to discuss content. “The holiday connection was Jere’s idea,” noted Millette. See Workshop pg 3

Good Samaritan from pg 1 men can also house 35. The Lancaster and Coatesville offices focus on permanent housing. “Our staff (in those offices) help single mothers stay in their (homes),” explained Hoffer. “Our program will step in with rental assistance to keep (a mother and) her children in housing to prevent them from having to come to the shelter.” Hoffer added that the

process of being uprooted and moved to a shelter is especially difficult on children, who may struggle with poor academic performance and even health issues related to homelessness. Hoffer noted that Good Samaritan may spend up to $9,000 per month in rental assistance helping people stay in their homes, translating to serving up to 65 children each day through its programs. According to Hoffer, the Good Samaritan model utilizes a holistic approach that includes financial assistance, professional social workers, and mentor volunteers from local churches to surround a single mother with support. “We do weekly budgeting, life coaching, and mentoring (with our clients),” said Hoffer, who added that the children the organization serves receive help as well. “We help children learn to read and write,” he said. “We focus on building the literacy skills to give (children) the tools they need to succeed.” The Ephrata shelter can accommodate a woman and her children from six months up to two years, giving the family the time necessary to secure affordable housing. Hoffer added that unfortunately about 60 to 70 percent of the families living in the shelter have fled abusive situations. “Domestic violence is the third leading cause of homelessness among women nationally,” said Hoffer, who added that Good

Samaritan receives referrals from local churches that appreciate the shelter because it is safe, secure, and staffed by professional social workers. Good Samaritan Services is a private, nonprofit, faith-based organization that is fully dependent on the community for support. “It costs $23 per day per person to provide shelter, food, supplies, and case management services,” said Hoffer. “We pride ourselves on being efficient.” Hoffer noted that the organization applies for grants and holds several yearly fundraising events. “About 25 percent comes from grants and about 25 percent from fundraising,” he stated. Adding lighthearted moments into the lives of those it serves is also a goal of Good Samaritan. “We try to have fun,” said Hoffer. “We hold a Christmas party, and once a year, we visit a miniature horse farm to take the (children and their mothers) for an outing,” added Hoffer, who lauded an Ephrata bakery that provides birthday parties for the children at the shelter. Hoffer noted that one of the most valuable resources Good Samaritan can give to its clients is time. “We have professional social workers to help clients achieve their goals, but that takes time,” said Hoffer. “There are often a number of issues (involved) that can’t be fixed in a week. We give people the gift of time.” Readers who would like to know more about Good Samaritan Services may visit www.goodsamservices.org.

Neighbors Group Sets Craft, Bible Study Women of all ages and preschool children are invited to attend Neighbors Sharing and Caring, a women’s ministry of the Chiques Church of the Brethren, on Tuesday, Nov. 6, from 9 to 10:45 a.m. The church is located at 4045 Sunnyside Road, Manheim. The session will offer the choice between a craft and Bible study. Monica Martin will lead the craft, which will be a faux, white pumpkin succulent centerpiece. The item can be used long after the pumpkin season is over. Martin has been married for 14 years and has four daughters. She attends Mount Hope Mennonite Church. Thelma Thomas will lead the Bible study, titled “Only What’s Done for Christ Will Last.” The focus will be on how ordinary people can do things for Christ that will last forever. Thomas has been married to Ike for 55 years and has four children, 17 grandchildren, and a number of great-grandchildren. She is a member of Willow Street Mennonite Church and enjoys reading and gardening. Classes are provided for children from infants to prekindergartners. Your candidate for State Representative, 97th district In my daily routine, I coordinate the work of creative teams, represent the priorities of my clients, and take responsibility to bring projects to completion on time and on budget. I believe those skills are sorely lacking in Harrisburg today. I’m ready to put my skills to work for you. What I’ve learned talking with voters. . . • Families want the same opportunities for the next generation that they enjoyed. They expect public schools to prepare our children for productive lives and economic opportunities that provide financial security. • They wonder if they’ll be able to afford the care they need as they age. We must strengthen and protect Medicare and Medicaid and work toward providing quality, reliable healthcare for everyone. • They talk about property taxes and worry about friends trying to maintain homes on limited incomes.

IT’S TIME FOR SOLUTIONS THAT PROMOTE AND PROTECT OUR COMMONWEALTH Here’s how we RAISE REVENUE, NOT YOUR TAXES! • Every state around us has been wise enough to close the Delaware Loophole. There’s $200,000,000 to start with.

• Funding meant for your local schools is being syphoned off to private and cyber schools. This increases your local taxes. Reduce the drain on local district budgets, reduce property taxes. Workshop from pg 1 “I said, ‘It’s close to the holidays; how about how to deal with (that time of year)?’” explained Cassel. The workshop, “Holidays and Realities of Community Addictions,” will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 7, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at Conestoga Church of the Brethren, 141 E. Main St., Leola. The program will include a keynote address by Samuel Mwangi, pastor of Carpenter Community Church in Brownstown, followed by a panel discussion and a period of questions from the audience. Mwangi said that he envisions a seminar that will address the situations that those dealing with addiction, those in recovery, and families of both face at the holidays. “The holidays are one of the most vulnerable times for people in recovery,” explained Mwangi, who noted that the celebratory spirit can actually make life more challenging. “It can be a very difficult time.” Among the many issues that face individuals and families dealing with addiction are a number of losses. Some may be missing friends or loved ones who have been lost to overdose. Others are grieving the loss of a marriage or relationships with children. The materialism commonly associated with the holidays can deepen problems when

the resources to participate are not available. “This workshop will help to create awareness so those in recovery can be on guard,” explained Mwangi, who added that children who are without their parents due to addiction issues suffer during the holidays as well. Practical steps for families of those people who have addictions or are in recovery include encouraging relationship but not enabling substance abuse. “The family needs to set boundaries and be supportive at the same time,” said Mwangi. “It’s a big challenge (because) you want to say, ‘We love you and we care and we want to be there for you,’ but the individual who is (abusing substances may) interpret that as ‘Then let me come to the house, sit around the table, and see my children.’” The panel discussion will include four area residents who can speak to the problem from different angles. Joel Jakubowski, director of Revelations of Freedom Ministries, will represent a professional perspective, Mwangi will take the pastor’s viewpoint, and Joel Carvanal will share the perspective of someone in recovery. A fourth panelist will be representative of a family member who has walked with a loved one in recovery. In addition to the speaker and panelists, organizers plan to have

displays in the church fellowship area, including one representing GOAL (Global Outreach for Addiction Leadership and Learning) Project, featuring Compass Mark literature. TTC/Potter’s House is a nonprofit, Christ-centered ministry that offers a holistic approach to physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of pre-release and postrelease prisoners and individuals desiring to overcome addictions. Mwangi said that as representatives of faith-based organizations, the organizers of the event want to relay the message of the Christmas story to families dealing with addiction. “A lot of people don’t know where to turn when addiction comes,” he said. “We want to bring hope to the community during this holiday season.” Readers who have questions about the workshop may call 717-826-1154. More information about TTC/Potter’s House may be found at http://transition tocommunity.com or by searching for “Potter’s House/A Transition to Community Ministry” on Facebook.

Separate registration fees have been set for adults and for youths. Packet pickup for those who register in advance will take place from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 29, and Friday, Nov. 30, at Trinity Evangelical Congregational Church, 48 Market Square, Manheim. Booters Bow in District Quarterfinals to CV the Warriors came to life offensively and took a 1-0 lead when Robbie Heckman found David Dieal in front on a crossing pass. Dieal’s shot went true with just under 13 minutes gone in the opening frame and the Warwick defense did the rest, sending the Warriors into the locker room with the lead. “Drew Stief did a great job in goal putting up a shutout, but our entire defense also played a great game,” stated head coach Gordy Cowher. “Ephrata put a lot of pressure on us in those first five minutes and Drew came up with several huge saves that kept Ephrata off of the scoreboard.” In the second, freshman Jacob Smith scored twice to ice the victory as Stief, who made four saves on the night, gave way to Boston Libhart (1) late in the half. Smith’s first goal came on a quick pass from Jay Destinoble in the 56th minute with the second coming almost 14 minutes later on a soft pass that caught the wind and carried just over the outstretched hands of keeper Cole Hummel. Both Stief and Eagles goalie Matt Zambetti turned away six shots for their respective teams with Cumberland Valley getting off seven shots while Warwick managed six. The Eagles also enjoyed a 4-3 advantage in corner kicks. “We had a couple of decent opportunities, but we just could not put one in the back of the net,” noted Cowher. “Our kids played their hearts out, and in light of what has happened to our community on Friday, it speaks a lot about the types of kids we have. They have incredible character.”

FOOTBALL With a share of the Section One crown on the line, Warwick scored 28 unanswered points in the first quarter alone and ran out to a 47-7 lead by halftime over Penn Manor on the way to a 53-20 victory. That placed them in a three-way tie with Manheim Township and Wilson for the section crown. Although the Warriors surrendered 306 passing yards to Penn Manor quarterback Luke Braas, the defense overpowered the Comet’s running game, holding them to negative 24-yards on only 10 carries. Warwick tallied 449-yards of offense with 213 of those yards coming on the ground and 236 from the arms of Adam Ricketts

MERCHANDISER - Warwick Edition (9-12, 99 YDS, TD) and Joey McCracken (9-12, 137 YDS, 3TD). Receiver Trey Glass (7-85, TD), who also ran for 48-yards and a touchdown, finished the regular season with 1,131 receiving yards which set a new Warwick school record and also leads the L-L League. He also leads the league in catches (64), and touchdown receptions (12)

through 10 games. His first score of the game came on a 22-yard reception from McCracken after the defense held the Comets to a punt on their first possession of the game. A Warwick interception by Brendan Martin on Penn Manor’s ensuing possession led to another Warrior drive that was capped by McCracken’s second touchdown pass

off the game, this one to Hayden Rucci (5-86, TD) from 28-yards out for a 140 lead. Hilton Michael (5-59, 2TD) was the recipient of McCracken’s third touchdown of the day, all in the first quarter, when he caught an 18-yard pitch-and-catch to make it 21-0 before a 38-yard scramble by Glass stretched the lead to

four touchdowns by the start of the second. Braas put the Comets on the board in the second quarter when he plunged in from the one-yard line for the 28-7 score, but two more Warwick scores from running back Nick Fucci (18-86, 2TD), and a third from Michael pulled the Warriors away with a 47-7 halftime lead. A 6-yard run by Sean Bedessa (7-48, TD) in the fourth quarter marked the end of scoring for Warwick while Braas passed for two more before the end of the game. GOLF Brock Fassnacht stood as the lone Warwick representative when he took to the course last Monday and Tuesday at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York for the PIAA Championship and the junior golfer didn’t disappoint coming out of the two-day tournament with an 11th place finish. Fassnacht started the first round on the back nine and recorded three pars and two birdies with two bogeys and a double bogey on the 18th for a 3over par, but he recovered, playing his final nine at 2-over, with the help of a birdie on the par-5 seventh. He ended Photo by Bob Diller the round by scoring a 5-over 76 Warwick’s Hilton Michael catches an 18-yard touchdown pass against Penn Manor’s Isaac Hostetter heading into Tuesday’s final round. during the Warriors’ 53-20 win in last Friday’s regular-season finale in Millersville. Fassnacht bogeyed the third and recorded another double bogey, this time on the par-3 5th, which along with birdies on the second and seventh gave him a 1-over 37 at the turn. Four more bogeys on holes 10, 14, 16, and 17 married with five pars on the rest netted him a 4-over 39 for another 5-over 76 for the round giving him a 152 for the tournament. CROSS COUNTRY Warwick’s boys earned a trip to this week’s PIAA Championship meet by placing second in the team standings of the District Three meet which was held on Saturday at Big Spring High School. Cedar Crest finished first with 145 points while Warwick scored 189 ahead of third place Carlisle which posted 217 points. Despite miserable conditions in which a steady cold rain fell for most of the day, Connor Shields pulled away for fifth place overall with a time of 16:46.5, edging out Conestoga Valley’s Nathan Grucelski (6th, 16:47.5) by one second. Noah Martin finished 12th in 17:03.3 and was neck-and-neck with Hershey’s Brendan Shea (13th, 17.03.5) at the line and joined Shields as the only two Warrior runners to finish in the top 20. As a pack, Warwick finished with a

split of 1:29 between its top five runners to score team points. Jeremy Bell (42nd, 17:48.6), Parker Keares (47th, 17:51.3), and David Bach (87th, 15.5) represented the final points for Warwick with Jeremiah Hendrix (150th, 18:49.8) and Marcus Wachira (153rd, 18:30.7) rounding out the field for the Warriors. In the girl’s race it was Anna Martin with a 27th place finish in 20:21.5 that helped lead them to 438 points and a 15th place finish to end the season for the Lady Warriors. The girls finished with a 1-5 split of 3:46. Sophia Nau finished second for Warwick with a 52nd place time of 21:00.3 followed by Caitlyn Wagner (56th, 21:08), Alexa Wenger (130th, 22:35.7), Clara Ford (202nd, 24:07.8), and Jaylyn Wagner (209th, 24:21.4). Chautauqua Acquires Land Tract The Pennsylvania Chautauqua in Mount Gretna, recently acquired more than 18 acres of the historic privately held Soldiers Field. The purchase was completed primarily with funds that were donated to the community capital campaign. Saving Soldiers Field Committee cochairs John Feather and Mike Sherman announced that the committee raised more than $850,000 in pledges to be paid over three years toward a nearly $1 million purchase price. Nearly all of the more than $680,033 in first-year pledges has been received by the committee. The unified effort has resulted

in pledges which have come from all sections of the Mount Gretna community as well as from around the country. Seventy percent of funds have come from individual and local businesses, with the rest being committed by the Pennsylvania Chautauqua board of managers and Pennsylvania Chautauqua Foundation. In July, Pennsylvania Chautauqua stockholders voted to approve the purchase of the land to benefit the Mount Gretna community. The purchase will benefit the community by preserving and enhancing the historical features of this portion of Soldiers Field; providing

recreational opportunities such as walking/fitness trails, bird watching, picnic areas, and Railsto-Trails linkage; providing educational opportunities and programs such as tree identification, nature experiences, and historical markers; and providing periodic overflow parking for Mount Gretna’s many summer cultural activities and programs, as well as for area businesses. Soldiers Field reflects part of Mount Gretna’s history. This is the site where the Pennsylvania National Guard held its annual encampment and training from 1885 to 1935, when it moved to Fort Indiantown Gap. Troops

trained on Soldiers Field for service in the Spanish-American War and World War I. The land, originally part of Robert H. Coleman’s holdings, was donated by him for the Pennsylvania National Guard’s use. Coleman’s railroad line, the Cornwall Lebanon Railroad, now part of the Rails-to-Trails system, transported the soldiers to Mount Gretna, as well as their families and friends who came to visit them. The Pennsylvania Chautauqua Foundation is accepting contributions online and by check. Information is available at www.pachautauqua.info under the Saving Soldiers Field section or by calling 717-964-3270.

The Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership (LHOP) has announced the completion of the Lancaster Veterans Barracks, a first-of-its-kind home dedicated for veterans who are part of the Lancaster County Court of Common Pleas Veterans Court Program. A ceremony marking the completion and opening of the Barracks was held on Sept. 20 at the renovated home at 455 Fremont St., Lancaster. Retired Maj. Gen. Eric Weller, Deputy Adjutant General - Veterans Affairs, served as the guest speaker. Commander James Vollrath of the American Legion, Department of Pennsylvania, was also in attendance. Vollrath is a member of Lancaster Post 34 and a volunteer with Veterans Court Community Partnership, of which the post is a part. Other local dignitaries and politicians attended, including Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace. Preparation of the Lancaster Veterans Barracks project began in September 2017 when LHOP purchased a condemned and blighted house on Fremont Street from the Lancaster City Redevelopment Authority for a discounted fee. Working with veterans in the court program and community members, CAPital Workforce, a program of the Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster County, completed the rehab work on the home. The total cost of acquisition and rehab was nearly $100,000, and a total of $150,000 was raised through cash and in-kind

contributions of labor and materials. The remainder of funds will be held in reserve to take care of future major systems repairs and replacements. The Barracks will be owned by LHOP, managed by a professional landlord, and administered within the rules of the Veterans Court program. Resident participants will be required to pay a monthly fee while living in the house to help cover costs. “We at LHOP are extremely proud to be a part of a project that will help our veterans get back on their feet after serving our country,” said LHOP CEO Ray D’Agostino, himself a veteran. “We and our partners, the Veterans Court Community Partnership and CAPital Workforce, are humbled by the many in-kind and financial donors as well as those who donated their time and talents in making this project a reality.” Veterans Court began six years ago as a way to give veterans in the criminal justice system who are charged with certain crimes individualized treatment programs based on proven national research and program models. There have been 43 graduates of the program, and 27 veterans are currently participating. In addition to the personal benefits for veterans and their families, the community benefits as well. Notably, the Veterans Court Program is more costeffective than traditional incarceration. It costs in the five figures each year to incarcerate someone as opposed to approxi-

mately $3,100 for someone to take part in the program. LHOP is a community benefit, charitable nonprofit organization and a certified community development financial institution in Lancaster County with a 24-year history of making a positive impact by helping people access and create fair and affordable housing. With the understanding that good housing is the foundation of a great community, LHOP

Other cast members include David Ziegler as Mr. Beaver, Kayla Ketchum as Mrs. Beaver, Morgan Hackart as the Unicorn, Samantha Peffer as the Centaur, Akash Banerjee as Mr. Tumnus, Taylon Madison as Fenris Ulf, Stephen Quinones as the Dwarf, Zachary Snyder as the Elf, and Henry Stover as Father Christmas. Hilliar was excited to announce that she was able to cast the parents of three of her leads as the adult versions of their characters. Rebecca White will play the adult version of

Lucy, Todd Dickinson will play the adult Edmund, and John Knudson will play the grown-up Peter, while K. C. Testerman will portray the adult Susan. Hilliar noted that the challenges of staging the well-known story include highlighting the differences between the real world and Narnia. “It’s the stone table breaking and (creating) thunder and snow and different sound effects,” said Hilliar, who noted that staging the epic battle is also a challenge. “I am bringing in a trained stage fighter to train the students to make it look realistic,” she added. “I am hoping it will all come

together, and the finished product will be really cool.” Despite the challenges, Hilliar said that she is excited to stage the classic. “I needed to do a (show with a) hopeful message,” explained Hilliar. “So many people are drive by ambition, but Aslan is driven by self-sacrifice (and) taking care of people, (so) he empowers (them to) be the best they can be.” The message of the show is especially important to Hilliar, who wants her audience to experience a positive production. “I feel good about the message it is sending out,” she said. “I hope people will walk away saying, ‘If I do the right thing, it is going to make a difference. I should stand up for what I think is right.’”
