Concert To Feature Family Members By Ann Mead Ash

“We respect and we love one another, and you don’t always find that combination,” said Michael Jamanis, violinist, of his mother, Frances Veri, a pianist. The characteristics of that type of relationship are obvious between the two, who will be performing a special fall concert at Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS). “I used to have to say, ‘Michael, did you practice?’” said a chuckling Veri. “Now he says, ‘Mom, did you practice?’” “These Are a Few of Our Favorite Things,” a free concert in the round featuring Jamanis on violin and Veri on piano, will be held at LCHS, 650 Juliette Ave., Lancaster, on Friday, Nov. 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the Old Main Auditorium. The idea for the title came about when Tony Brill, LCHS director of Fine and Performing Arts, explained to Jamanis and Veri that they would be in the center of the audience on the auditorium floor. “It will be a much more intimate concert, and I love that because there’s more audience interaction,” said Jamanis. Veri likened the setting to inviting the audience into the family living room, and she compared the musical selections to a buffet dinner. “This is special (because it is like) putting all the things you love to eat on the menu, and whether they go together or not, we are See “Favorite Things” pg 4

When high school directors consider fall plays, their minds may turn to the possibility of staging a show with a healthy dose of suspense. “I was looking for a murder mystery comedy,” said Tracy Wagner, Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) drama director. “Murder’s in the Heir” by Billy St. John met Wagner’s qualification, but the show also includes a chance for audience members to participate and help determine the outcome of the play. “It’s kind of like the game Clue, where every (character) has a weapon and a motive,” said Wagner of the drama, which will be staged at the See LCHS Play pg 2

When she returned to the United States after her first trip, she began learning Hebrew. “That was a big adventure,” she noted. Her ability to use the language will be employed again, when Newell leads a group to Israel from Sunday, Sept. 8, to See Israel Trip pg 5

In addition to learning the nine endings, Wagner noted that members of the ensemble are learning to be on stage for long periods of time without lines to say. “Remaining in character and tackling line delivery to make the lines funny (is a challenge),” said Wagner. “There is a lot of humor, but it is subtle humor so if the students can bring their characters to life, the audience is (more likely) to understand the humor.” Wagner hopes that audiences

fundraising. Individuals may set fundraising goals and share stories and their ExtraGive personal links with their social network to raise support for their chosen organizations on Nov. 16. Community members may become peer-to-peer ExtraGive fundraisers by visiting the aforementioned website, finding the organization they wish to support, and clicking the Fundraise button. Additionally, this year dozens of individuals across Lancaster County will be part of spreading the word about the Extraordinary Give by being part of the Give Fleet. The volunteer driving squad is open to members of the public who would like to promote the Extraordinary Give by applying a specially designed magnet to their personal or business vehicle. Magnets will be available through the Lancaster County Community Foundation. Give Fleet volunteers will apply their own magnet at any

time from Saturday, Nov. 10, to Friday, Nov. 16. Any licensed driver is eligible to be part of the Give Fleet and may register to participate at the Extraordinary Give website. On Nov. 16, community members may also support the day of fundraising by attending the Family Give Fest and the ExtraGive Fest. Both events are free and open to the public. The Family Give Fest will take place from 3 to 6 p.m. on the second floor of the Lancaster Marriott, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster. Children, parents and grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins are invited to participate. The event is designed with preschool and elementary children in mind. Families will be able to learn about causes in Lancaster that impact local families every day, give their thoughts on what is important to them, and share their passion with others. The festival will include interactive learning stations, on-site

ExtraGive T-shirt printing, and a family photo station. Steven Courtney will present live music. The ExtraGive Fest will follow from 6 p.m. to midnight on the second and third floors of the Lancaster Marriott and Lancaster County Convention Center. Attendees may count down the final hours of the Extraordinary Give and attend performances by local and regional bands. ExtraGive Fest will also serve as the central hub for the Extraordinary Give, featuring screens that will actively display social media content uploaded by people using #ExtraGive, social media stations for photo opportunities, and giving stations for attendees to donate throughout the evening. From 5 p.m. to midnight, the Griest Building in Penn Square will be aglow with a 14-story light show, making it a glowing symbol of the community’s generosity during the Extraordinary Give. The light show will

feature changing colors and patterns that ExtraGive Fest attendees may customize by pushing integrated buttons in an interactive experience. The lights’ responses to the individuals’ actions are meant to create a metaphorical example of how each individual action may impact the community. The record-breaking 2017 Extraordinary Give generated a total of $8.6 million for 464 nonprofit organizations in a single day. More than $31 million has been generated since the creation of the Extraordinary Give in 2012. Mother and son noted that choosing the music for the evening was like taking a walk down memory lane together. “We will be doing Beethoven’s ‘Spring Sonata,’” said Jamanis, noting, “I grew up listening to that in the living room at home.” Jamanis and his mother recalled how a family friend and his wife would join them for dinner and afterward the friend would play the piece with Veri. “I remember this as a kid (under) 8 years old,” Jamanis said. Veri recalled that the piece became a tradition. “No matter what we played (that evening), we ended with the ‘Spring,’” she said. “It was like our signature (song).” When discussing playing the “Romantic Pieces” of Dvorak, which the duo will play at the concert, Jamanis remembered playing them at Harriet Brisk’s house when he was in middle school. “Harriet was a family friend and important member of the Musical Arts Society,” explained Veri. “She would have house concerts for young people,” added

Friday, Sept. 20, 2019. Using the Shoresh Study Tours program, the group will travel to the coast, desert, and mountains, stopping at places where biblical events are believed to have occurred to help the travelers dig deeper into the Scriptures. The tour will include both Old and New Testament sites and information about the history of modern Israel. The focus of the study during the trip is on Christ and a better understanding of His ministry. Newell’s second trip to Israel occurred in 1979, when she was asked to take a group of students from a Christian school back to Israel. She stayed for a month teaching students, and when she returned, others began asking her to take them to Israel. “Every year I began taking people back,” said Newell, who added that in the 1980s, she realized that study programs for Israel visitors were sparse. “There was some formal (education), but for people going for just a few weeks, the content was lacking,” she noted. Around that same time,

is what Shoresh is all about.” After leading so many tours of Israel, Newell noted that she has been struck by both the differences and similarities between bands of participants. “Each group is unique, and each bonds in a wonderful way,” she said. “They all come back saying they are surprised by how much (more) information (they now have about) the Bible they have been studying all these years, and that tells me we are achieving what we set out to do … to help people see Jesus more clearly and understand the Bible more clearly.” Before moving to New Holland, Newell was on staff at the Trinity School for Ministry in Pittsburgh, where she earned master’s and doctoral ministry degrees. While on staff at the school, she created the Israel travel study program. Readers who would like to learn more about the September 2019 trip to Israel may email theresa@cmj-usa.org or call 412680-6843. More information about Shoresh may be found at https://shoresh.mvti.net/camp -2019 or by searching for “Shoresh Tours” on www.youtube.com.

Newell was introduced to the international director of CMJ, a ministry that was founded in 1809 in London. Newell was asked to open an American office in Fairfax, Va. She and other members of the ministry began asking the question “How do we get more biblical content into a travel program for laypeople?” “(We wanted) a program for people who wanted to deepen their relationship with Jesus and understand the relationship between Old and New Testament and understand Jesus in the Second Temple period,” explained Newell. “That’s how we came to develop the Shoresh program.” Newell explained that “Shoresh” is Hebrew for “root.” “(It’s a study program about) the Jewish roots of the Christian faith and seeing Jesus in His timeframe and understanding that as we walk the land,” said Newell. She uses her knowledge of Hebrew to bring out the nuances in the Bible and bring deeper meaning to the text. “I use Hebrew to help people understand, (because) when we hear what the people in (Jesus’) day heard, it helps us to be better disciples. (developing) country who may have never received anything like this before. “For me personally, I get to pray over the boxes at each location, Ward continued. “That blesses my heart, to know that I can touch so many lives in that way, because each box represents a person. In April 2017, Ward had the opportunity to travel to Rwanda to help hand out shoeboxes to children and youths along with other Operation Christmas Child volunteer area coordinators from around the United States. Ward said that sometimes depending on logistics, the boxes are not distributed immediately at Christmas but later on throughout the year. This was the case with the Rwanda delivery, but the timing did not take away from the recipients’ delight. “You see almost a void of joy, and when that gift comes in, they really come alive, Ward recalled. “The void that was in their eyes becomes this amazing joy. Like we say, it’s the light of Christ that comes in. One 11-year-old boy in Rwanda opened a box that included a pair of winter gloves, causing Ward and the other volunteers to feel dismayed about him receiving something so impractical for the climate where he lived. However, they were surprised to see his exuberant reaction. “He was thrilled, and the translator explained it was because he had needed a pair of gloves to try out

While there are thousands of drop-off sites throughout the country, Deb Ward, who serves as the volunteer area coordinator for Lancaster and Lebanon counties, noted that this region is consistently one of the areas that collects the largest number of boxes. “We collected around 32,000 boxes last year, Ward said. “We’ve got a huge goal this year, and we’re really praying to get over 37,000. National Collection Week is

set to take place from Monday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 19, for the Samaritan’s Purse project. Volunteers like Ward get to experience the joy that abounds as adults, youths, and children drop off the shoeboxes at various locations before they are shipped to a distribution center in Baltimore. From there, Ward said the boxes are taken by tractor trailers, airplanes, or ships to the approximately 120 nations where children will receive the gifts. “During collection week, the best thing to see is when a family walks in and the child is carrying a box and they’re so proud they made this box and so excited that a little kid is going to get a box (they) made themselves, shared Ward. “They’re getting gifts for children in a war-torn or

Historic Muddy Creek Lutheran Church, 11 S. Muddy Creek Road, Denver, will hold an organ dedication recital on Sunday, Nov. 11, at 3 p.m. in the church sanctuary. The church congregation dates back to 1732, and its name is derived from the currents of a nearby stream. The current brick building, which features an arched ceiling and stained glass windows, was built in the Depression era. The sanctuary houses a pipe organ built in 1938 by the A. Gottfried Company; in recent years the organ has been in need of repair. This spring and summer it underwent an extensive six-month rebuild and refurbishment project by the SDG Pipe Organ Company. The dedication recital will be played by Margaret Marsch and will include classic and sacred pieces that will showcase an array of sounds on the refurbished instrument. Marsch is a graduate of Moody Bible Institute and Westminster Choir College and has performed at National Cathedral, The Forum in Harrisburg, Bruton Parish in Williamsburg, and The White House, as well as with numerous choirs across the U.S., Canada, and Europe. She is currently the sanctuary organist at Lancaster Church of the Brethren. The church has ample parking, and the concert is free and open to the public.

Symphony Orchestra Plans Concert The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) will hold the second concert of its 72nd season on Saturday, Nov. 10, at McCaskey East High School, 1051 Lehigh Ave., Lancaster. Performances will take place at 3 and 8 p.m. Maestro Stephen Gunzenhauser will lead the combined forces of the Lancaster Symphony, the Keystone State Boychoir, and the Lancaster Symphony Chorus in Carl Orff ’s “Carmina Burana.” Guest vocalists Elizabeth Caballero, Daniel Shirley, and John Viscardi will be featured. The program will also include John Harbison’s “Remembering Gatsby” and Oscar Navarro’s “Paconchita Overture.” “Carmina Burana” (“Songs of Beuren”) is based on a manuscript uncovered in the monastery of Benediktbeuren in upper Bavaria in 1803. It is a collection of poems and songs in Latin, Middle-High German, and Old French, written by university students, minstrels, defrocked monks, and artists, dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. The works reflect a strong belief in destiny, an attitude that was a combination of

medieval Christianity and ancient Greek philosophy. In 1935, Orff read the uncovered “Carmina Burana” manuscript as compiled by Johann Andrea Schmeller in 1847 and decided to use the texts in the first section of a trilogy of cantatas titled “Carmina Burana,” “Catulli Carmina,” and “Trionfo di Afrodite.” By 1936, Orff finished the first part, and “Carmina Burana” premiered in Frankfurt, Germany, on June 8, 1937. The American premiere followed many years later in San Francisco on Oct. 3, 1954. John Harbison is a U.S. contemporary composer. “Remembering Gatsby” comes from an opera titled “The Great Gatsby.” It premiered in 1999, more than 25 years after work on the opera began. The opera was inspired by American author F. Scott

Fitzgerald’s 1925 novel, “The Great Gatsby.” The “Paconchita Overture” is a Latin work by Oscar Navarro that premiered in July 2016. The name came from the combination of Navarro’s parents’ names, Paquito Navarro and Conchita González. The percussion section is the driving force behind the piece. The piece also features call and response conversations between the different instrument families, as well as complex rhythmic patterns that fuse with the flavor of Spanish heritage. Navarro performed two seasons ago with the Lancaster Symphony Orchestra for the U.S. premiere of one of his other works. Warwick Crushes Palmyra in District Opener by Vaughn Brown

With a mini-monsoon moving through the region, Warwick took to the field Friday night against Palmyra in the opening round of District Three playoff football and, with the entire team firing on all cylinders, handed the Cougars a lopsided, 64-0 loss. Joey McCracken threw for 228 yards and four touchdowns with Trey Glass on the receiving end of 155 of those yards and two scores while Nick Fucci ran for 105 yards and three touchdowns of his own. Defensively the Warriors completely shut down Palmyra’s running game, holding the Cougars to negative-seven yards and limiting them to only 38 yards of passing on 8 completions. The unit flexed its muscle from the

opening drive forcing a three-and-out before Hilton Michael recovered a blocked punt setting Warwick up on the Palmyra nine-yard line. McCracken found a wide-open Glass on the first play from scrimmage and connected again with the speedster on a 77-yard touchdown on Warwick’s second play to make it 15-0 after a successful two-point conversion. Following a three-yard scoring plunge by Fucci, Michael then recovered the ensuing onside kick and on the very next play caught a 39-yard touchdown pass to make it 29-0. A 22-yard scoring strike to Haydn Rucci with 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter then gave Warwick a commanding 36-0 lead. After that opening flurry of activity things slowed down a bit on offense for Warwick, however the Warriors still put up points in each of the remaining quarters. Justin Gerhart picked off a Cougar pass midway through the second quarter and took it 15 yards to the house before Fucci’s touchdown plunge from the 8-yard line with 17 seconds before the half made it 50-0. In the second half, and with the Photo by Mark Palczewski mercy rule in effect,

Fucci scored again on a five-yard run with 8:15 to go in the third and Sean Bedessa closed things out with a three-yard score with 7:59 remaining in the game. The fourth seeded Mustangs of Cedar Cliff wait for the Warriors in this Friday’s quarterfinal showdown in Camp Hill.

Warwick trio of Parker Keares (70th, 17:56), Jeremy Bell (75th, 17:58), and Marcus Wachira (105th, 18:27) followed, but it was Wachira that clinched it for Warwick by edging out Carlisle runner Jacob Morris (106th, 18:28) by one second.

Had Morris, instead, claimed 105 points and Wachira 106, then both teams would have tied at 274 and it would have fallen on each team’s sixth finisher in which case Warwick would have dropped a point due to David Bach (116th,

18:43) finishing before Carlisle’s Andrew Booths who was 117th, which would have resulted in the Warrior’s maintaining 10th in the team standings. Jeremiah Hendrix (128th, 19:04) rounded out the field for Warwick.

CROSS COUNTRY

Warwick’s boys took part in the PIAA championship meet in Hershey on Saturday with the Warriors placing 10th as a team in the field of 19 schools. They scored 273 points, edging out Carlisle which placed 11th with 275 points. A second-place finish in the District Three AAA race at Big Spring High School qualified Warwick for last week’s race as they secured the second of only three spots offered to the District. Connor Shields and Noah Martin crossed the line neck-and-neck with each other with Shields claiming 20th place and Martin 21st place overall, but 11th and 12th in team scoring, respectively, while finishing with identical times of 16:54. Because not all runners in the race are running with a school team, those that do are scored based on the field of team runners. Shields was awarded 11 points and Martin 12 based on their positional finish within that field, even though their overall finish Photo by Mark Palczewski Warwick’s Caleb Schmitz zeroes in on Palmyra’s Grant Haus during the Warriors’ 64-0 District was farther back. Both Warwick runners crossed the Three first-round victory over the visiting Cougars last Friday. line before any Carlisle runner, however, the Bison scored on the next four team positions of 21st, 36th, 46th, and 66th to push the issue. Haefner made special note of select fossil ferns from St. Clair, Pa.; wavellite found in only Pennsylvania and Arkansas; rare tabular graphite crystals in blue quartz that the club discovered in Exton in 2013; and trilobite fossils from the Kinzers formation in Lancaster and York counties. “Something that is significant is a new genus,” Haefner related. “(I found a) new form of life in 2017, and photos and details of the research will be shared to those who inquire.” He noted that the creature appears to have been the size of a small onion, with tendrils that reached out to collect food. Haefner uncovered the first fossil in the York side of the Kinzers formation, and a second of better quality was found in spring this year. Both specimens were found in soft-bodied fossilization, a unique form of preservation in which

master of ceremonies Susan Shapiro and Heart Walk chair Carrie Willets, president of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital, welcomed walkers during the opening ceremonies and introduced the Heinaman family of West Hempfield Township. Ryan and Nicole Heinaman shared the story of their 6-year-old son’s heart defect diagnosis. Ryan and Nicole expected to receive great news about their healthy baby boy during their 20-week ultrasound. When doctors discovered that the baby had a two-vessel cord, they suggested that the Heinamans get more frequent ultrasounds. During an ultrasound at seven months, doctors detected something wrong with their baby’s heart and referred them for additional testing by a pediatric cardiologist. The results were inconclusive, but doctors wanted to follow up after the baby was born. Tyler Heinaman was born in June 2012 and seemed to be healthy and normal. The Heinamans followed up with the pediatric cardiologist two weeks later for testing. This time, doctors could see what was wrong with Tyler’s heart. Tyler was born with a condition called coarctation of the aorta, a narrowing of the blood vessel that carries oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. Hawk Watch Observation Area Opens Tips Posted For Driving The Second Mountain Hawk Second Mountain Hawk Watch observation area will officially be open from Aug. 15 to Saturday, Dec. 15, coinciding with the official migratory bird watching season. As in the past, the site will be open dawn until dusk and is only to be used to count migratory raptors. The site will be closed to foot and vehicle traffic during the offseason. The observation area for Second Mountain Hawk Watch is located adjacent to and on Fort Indiantown Gap ranges where troops train and bivouac.

Watch was established in 1984 in collaboration with partners to assist birders with environmental stewardship. The partnership between Second Mountain Hawk Watch and Fort Indiantown Gap has been in place for more than 34 years. Individuals who would like to assist Second Mountain Hawk Watch with counting migratory birds may contact president David Schwenk at 717-533-2814. The organization’s website is https://2ndmtn.shutterfly.com.

The Second Mountain Hawk Watch observation area offers a clear view for birders to count migratory birds. The area, which opened for the season on Aug. 15, will officially remain open through Dec. 15 and is to be used to count migratory raptors.

More Efficiently Unlicensed drivers learning to drive are often taught the benefits of defensive driving. Safety is often the focus of such lessons, but the benefits of driving safely and efficiently extend far beyond safety. According to the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), aggressive driving can lower gas mileage by roughly 15 to 30 percent at highway speeds. In addition, a 2017 study from researchers at the DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory found that aggressive driving can contribute to a reduced fuel efficiency by as much as 40 percent in stop-and-go traffic. Speeding as well as rapid acceleration and braking are hallmarks of aggressive driving, and each of these habits puts drivers, their passengers and other motorists at risk of accident and injury. By taking the following steps to drive more efficiently, drivers can save money and potentially even lives. Rooftop cargo units can be beneficial for family vacations or other extended getaways, but using rooftop cargo boxes as traveling storage units for items not needed on a daily basis or simply keeping empty units attached to vehicle roofs compromises fuel efficiency. Rooftop cargo bins increase the aerodynamic drag on vehicles, forcing

them to burn more fuel than they would burn while moving without anything attached to the roof. The DOE estimates suggest that large, blunt rooftop cargo boxes can reduce fuel efficiency by as much as 25 percent when a vehicle is moving at speeds between 65 and 75 miles per hour. Trunks are not closets, so resist the temptation to use them to store golf clubs and other items that are better stored in a house or garage. Research has indicated that an extra 100 pounds in a vehicle can reduce gas mileage by about 1 percent. Because that figure is based on the percentage of extra weight relative to the vehicle’s weight, drivers of small vehicles may find using their trunks as closets to be especially costly and inefficient. Cruise control makes it possible for vehicles to maintain constant speeds. That helps drivers ensure they are always obeying the speed limit, and it keeps cars from the constant acceleration and deceleration that wastes fuel. Efficient driving is safe, costeffective and eco-friendly. With some simple strategies, drivers can do their part to protect the planet and make roads safer, all while saving money.

The Fulton Theatre has announced plans for the organization’s upcoming expansion, reported on the projected economic impact of the project after completion, and has given a detailed funding report for the campaign, also known as the Fulton Theatre’s Breakout Performance. The first stage of construction, including updated stage rigging and upgrades to both stage lighting and sound, was recently completed in advance of the Fulton’s premiere of “Treasure Island.” Phase one is continuing this fall with a focus on the West King Street portion of the city block. King Street construction includes plans to rebuild the historic storefronts on the 100 block of West King Street. The top three floors will provide on-site housing for visiting artists to the Fulton stage with newly renovated apartment spaces, while the first floor will support new retail opportunities. On-site actor housing will be expanded to 26 artist apartments, which include one-bedroom apartments, spacious star apartments, and comfortable studio apartments. The Fulton’s guest artists often stay at the theater for six to 12 weeks to prepare and perform in productions. Beginning late 2019, the expansion will focus on the north side of the city block with the several construction plans. Plans include a skylit atrium lobby that will bridge the theater’s existing lobby and the Fulton’s education building on Grant Street. The expanded space will allow up to 1,400 patrons to

gather. New restrooms planned for the atrium lobby will provide 13 additional facilities. The atrium lobby bar will be a centerpiece for gathering before, during, and after performances. An intimate, private gathering area on the second floor will feature a refreshment area, a restroom, and a coat room to host the Fulton Theatre’s Producer’s Circle members as well as private parties for the community. A performance and rehearsal studio will allow the Fulton to rehearse full productions on-site. The space will feature sprung dance floors and mirrors and will be two stories in height to accommodate all choreographic needs. The rehearsal and performance studio will be able to be transformed into an event space for both Fulton patrons and the community. The space will hold up to 200 people. The exterior of the new rehearsal space also creates an architectural element to Water Street and continues the beautification of Water Street through to the Ware Center. The Fulton Theatre will continue to operate on its normal schedule throughout construction, and productions will not be interrupted. The project in total will have a $29 million budget, which includes a $5 million endowment. As of Aug. 31, the Fulton has raised $21 million. Donations to the campaign can be made at the Fulton Theatre’s Box Office, 12 N. Prince St., Lancaster; by visiting www.fultonbreakout.org; or by contacting a member of the Breakout Performance team at 717-394-7133.
