Candlelight Tour will illuminate Lititz’s Christmas traditions BY JEFF FALK
he Christmas holiday has always been a special time of the year in Lititz. But as the community has evolved over the centuries, the way the holiday season has been observed and celebrated has changed. The Lititz Historical Foundation will explore that evolution with its annual Christmas Candlelight Tour. From a marketing standpoint, the tour represents just another example of how the foundation creatively raises money through and for promoting local history. The Christmas Candlelight Tour will be presented on Friday, Dec. 8, and Saturday, Dec. 9, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the 1792 Johannes Mueller House, 127-139 Main St., Lititz. There is a cost involved, and reservations are recommended. “We’re sharing history and Moravian customs around the holidays,” said Cory Van Brookhoven, president of the Lititz Historical Foundation. “We explain how they celebrated Christmas, what their church services were like, what they ate.
Manheim Township resident Sheryl Williams serves as one of the re-enactors on the Candlelight Christmas Tour.
Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra will honor veterans with swing Who or what exactly is the Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra (CBJO)? Well, that’s kind of hard to explain simply because it’s always reinventing itself. But here’s what you absolutely, positively need to know: It’s a big band with a big sound playing a big concert for a big cause. A band deeply rooted in Manheim Township, Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra, with special guest America’s Sweethearts, will present a benefit concert at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12 - the day after Veterans Day at Highland Presbyterian Church,
500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. A freewill offering will be accepted, and all proceeds will go toward the Wounded Warrior Project. “The goal is to honor veterans of all eras and to raise money for the Wounded Warrior Project,” said Joe Chesnutt, CBJO’s founder and trumpet player. “It’s one of my preferred charities. We’re like a Glenn Miller-style big band. I think it’s a very full, rich sound that makes you want to tap your feet and smile. For many people, it’ll bring back memories from their youth. It’s very sentimental for a lot of people.” See Corsair Blue pg 2
GTGH hints at true meaning of holidays BY JEFF FALK
Participants in the upcoming Gifts That Give Hope alternative gift fair include (from left) Katie Buckwalter and Gustavo Valdez of Kairos Ministries Guatemala, organizer Jenn Knepper and Luisa Tapia of My Peruvian Treasures.
Jenn Knepper knows a good idea when she sees one. Sixteen years ago, Knepper read about a unique gift fair being staged in Harrisburg by a women’s group. She reached out to the group, and after some thought, she came to the conclusion that the concept would be something that could benefit the Lancaster County community as well. Fast forward to 2023 and the annual Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) alternative gift fair is alive, well and thriving. The event is See GTGH pg 3

lit. It creates a certain atmosphere.” “There are a lot of events going on in Lititz around the holidays,” Van Brookhoven added. “A lot of the buildings are decorated. They put really cool stars up on the posts. Lititz is rich in history, and some of its Christmas traditions are very unique. Lititz is always busy, but I’d say it’s even more busy over the holidays.” The Lititz Historical Foundation has been conducting its Christmas Candlelight Tours for 12 years now. The event is one of five fundraising tours that the nonprofit presents throughout the year. “People are always looking for something to do around the holidays,” said Van Brookhoven. “It’s an attractive tour. There’s a lot to see, and it’s nice for families.” “It’s been successful,” he added. “This year we added a second day. The goal isn’t necessarily to sell out. We’re not motivated by money. We want to share the history of Lititz.” For more information about the Christmas Candlelight Tour or to reserve a spot, go to https://bit.ly/Candle lightChristmasTour.

You had to be a Moravian to live here between 1756 and 1855.” “The Moravians were very peaceful people,” continued Van Brookhoven. “They didn’t believe in war or fighting. They went to church. Back then, families were close, and gifts were handmade and modest.” The tours will start every 15 minutes, and each will last 40 minutes. The five tour guides, who are retired educators and re-enactors, will remain stationary and positioned at different locations on the first floor of the 1792 Johannes Mueller House - the kitchen, the parlor, the bedroom, the spinning room and the workshop. Each guide will relate a five- to eightminute presentation on the holiday customs and history of the Moravians and the Johannes Mueller House. Following the tour, refreshments will be available, and ticketholders can receive discounts at the Lititz Historical Foundation gift shop. “We call it a Candlelight Tour because there are candles in the windows and it’s at night,” said Van Brookhoven. “It’s dimly

The 90-minute concert will feature big band swing music from the 1940s. “We love it,” said Chesnutt. “It’s alive and well. We play it very well and our audiences like it.” Following a pandemic-induced moratorium, CBJO presented a scaled-back version of its Veterans Day concert last year. In 2019, the all-volunteer band raised $2,280 for the Wounded Warrior Project with its Veterans Day performance. This year, CBJO has performed eight concerts at various venues across Lancaster County. “There’s a lot of music here in Lancaster,” said Chesnutt. “We play for the love of playing. We’re not professional musicians. How you would grow a band like this is related to how the music has evolved. We’ve added to our inventory. The demographic we were originally targeting was the Greatest Generation. Many of them have passed away, but their children are still here.” CBJO comprises 20 musicians, playing trumpets, trombones, saxophones, clarinets, a guitar, piano, drums and an upright bass. “We have a housewife,” said Chesnutt. “We have a microbiologist. The common link is everybody plays very well, and it comes from their youth.” The Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra takes its name from the American Corsair fighter aircraft that saw duty in World War II and the Korean War, and the blue is a reference to Manheim Township High School’s school colors. The orchestra’s origins can be traced to the 35th reunion of Manheim Township’s Class of 1978 in 2013. “Manheim Township had outstanding jazz bands in ’76, ’77 and ’78,” said Chesnutt. “We were talking at the reunion, ‘Wouldn’t it be nice to get the band back together and play again?’ So we decided to form a band, and the era of music we really liked

Warwick High School, 301 W. Orange St., Lititz, will present its fall play, “The Play That Goes Wrong: High School Edition” by Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer, and Henry Shields. Performances will take place at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 10 and 11, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 12. This Olivier Award-winning comedy depicts the opening night of the Cornley Drama Society’s newest production, a 1920s whodunit titled “The Murder at Haversham Manor.” Anything that can go wrong in a theater production does, including a corpse that cannot play dead and actors tripping over both their lines and stage props. The cast includes junior Sam Barto as Annie, senior Foster Shrom as Chris, junior Jaxon King as Trevor, junior Carly Ruchalski as Rachel, freshman Finn Cacroft as Dennis, sophomore Brandon White as Jonathan, senior Chance Wilson as Max and freshman Leah Turnball as Sandra. The understudies are junior Jordan Privette and senior Paola Rivera-Perez. There is a discount on the ticket fee for students and senior citizens. The box office will open one hour prior to show time.

GTGH from pg 1 tally friendly, ethically sourced and meaningful. There are tuitions, mentorship programs, books, therapeutic camps and charitable donations that can be purchased in someone’s name. It takes the concept of being more blessed to give than to receive to a whole other level. “I’ve been blessed in so many ways. Giving helps me not forget where I’m coming from,” said Luisa Tapia, founder of My Peruvian Treasures, one of the gift fair’s marketplace vendors. “We almost have a duty to give. It’s really connected to love. When I give, I always receive more in return. It’s almost like planting seeds.” Over the years, GTGH’s alternative gift fair has changed and evolved, with vendors, nonprofits and people coming and going, but
the event has always stayed true to its mission by placing humans ahead of material goods. “I want people to have a sense of hope and realize there’s another way to do the holidays,” said Knepper, a nurse by profession. “For me, it’s refreshing when people do things a different way. I don’t have to go with the rat race that the normal status quo of the holidays bring.” “I don’t like the emphasis on materialism,” she added. “The fair redefines giving. My parents have always been minimalists. I started giving them charitable contributions as gifts even before the fair began. When you give of yourself, you see a different side of people.” For more information about the Gifts That Give Hope gift fair, go to www.giftsthatgivehope.org.

known for its ability to bring nonprofits together, its unique approach to gift giving and its propensity for fostering hope. “We want people to think more about the things they buy and what goes into them,” said Knepper. “The gift fair is a connection point for people to find out about people who are working to make the world a better place. I describe it as a live version of a gift catalog, except you walk into the event. We want people to learn more about the issues at people’s hearts.” This season’s GTGH gift fair will be presented on Sunday, Dec. 10, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Nearly 40 nonprofits and a dozen marketplace vendors are expected to be there. Food trucks will be stationed outside to enhance the atmosphere. “Have you ever seen someone who has no hope?” said Gustavo Valdez, president of Kairos Ministries Guatemala, one of the participating nonprofits. “That is a person who has no future, no way out. Hope is a way to tell people that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. With hope, there’s a reason for tomorrow.” Perhaps the best ways to describe the gifts that will be available at GTGH’s fair are environmen-
