SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

For Samantha Kerstetter, baking is a piece of cake

For the love of hoops Andy Herr’s passion for basketball is like few others’. Growing up, Herr was a gym rat. Now an adult, he’s a hoops junkie, a basketball fanatic. A 2008 graduate of Warwick High School, Herr spends much of his free time during the winter months watching local boys’ scholastic basketball. If there’s a game going on anywhere across Lancaster County, there’s a good chance you’ll find Herr there. “I’m always hungry for it,” said Herr. “I grew up in this league (Lancaster-Lebanon). If I didn’t live here, I wouldn’t care about it as much. In a corny way, maybe it’s me never growing up, or maybe me relating my adult life to my childhood.” For the last nine years, Herr has been the head writer for the local online outlet LLHoops.com, a hub for boys’ basketball locally. After matriculating to the University of Nebraska, Herr initially majored in journalism before graduating with a degree in history. But everything he does for LLHoops.com is free, so he doesn’t get paid. He does it for the love of the game, to provide media coverage for the county student-athletes who share his passion. “It’s basically a hobby,” said Herr, who lives in Denver. “It’s my way to get my passion to the masses. It’s a fun outlet for me when my 9-to-5 day ends. As long as gyms are open and games are being played, I’m going to try and

get there.” “I think every one of these kids needs a voice,” continued Herr. “ W hen I was growing up, the media coverage wasn’t what it is today. For me, it was such a kick when I saw my name in a box score (in the newspaper).” From even before games start in early December to when the season ends with the final playoff in March, Herr typically attends and watches more than 80 Lancaster-Lebanon boys’ basketball games each year. Over the last eight seasons, he has seen all 25 teams in the local circuit play at least once. “I’m here in October and I’ll be at (Hershey’s) Giant Center for the 6A (state) final in March,” said Herr. “This is my passion. I’m a basketball junkie or a degenerate or whatever you want to call me. Some of the story lines are the same, but I don’t think it’ll ever be monotonous to me. It’s fun to see (teams and players) steadily build and develop.” When he was in high school, Herr was a member of the Warwick boys’ basketball program, a thirdgeneration Lititz/Warwick basketball player. He said he wasn’t very good but he rarely missed team activities. “I was a shooter, whenever I got in,” said Herr. “Defense wasn’t exactly my cup of tea. Whenever I got the ball, it was going to go up. ‘Gym rat’ is a perfect description of me. When I hear people use that term to refer to me in my playing days, it means a

freelancer, he also writes for the online publication Eastern PA Football, covering the LancasterLebanon League.

Samantha Kerstetter has a baking tale to tell. It’s a story that links the past to the present, one that provides an update on one of our culture’s oldest and most beloved household labors of love. A 38-year-old resident of New Holland, Kerstetter has been the general manager of Cake and Cup Bake Shoppe, 12 W. Newport Road, Lititz, for 15 years. She knows her way around a kitchen and its refrigerator, its blender and its oven. “What I’ve seen over the holiday seasons is that people are not baking at home as much,” said Kerstetter. “People are getting desserts outsourced. It’s definitely because of busyness and the pursuit of convenience. To (bake at home) requires a lot of patience, but we have so many other things to busy our lives with.” From a few basic, readily available ingredients - flour, milk, butter, sugar, eggs, salt and baking powder - industrious bakers can create thousands of varieties of baked goods. Bakers are limited only by their experiences, their recipe lists and their creativity. “Everyone loves desserts,” said Kerstetter. “I do think there’s such a fulfilling feeling that See Samantha Kerstetter pg 2

comes from baking at home. You start with all these raw ingredients, and it brings all this joy. When you are really in the flow of baking and you have a passion for baking, it’s wonderful to see the joy a person gets from eating a sugar cookie. Those small things can really impact someone’s day.” Kerstetter earned a degree in baking and pastry arts from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, N.Y. W hile education is always important, she acknowledged that are certain elements of intuition and repetition that also go into becoming a successful baker.

“It’s not like just throwing things together and hoping it turns out,” said Kerstetter. “You have to be detail oriented to be in this field. I don’t think people understand how labor intensive it is. It’s a lot of late nights and early mornings. In a physical way, it can be very taxing. It requires patience and a passion. There’s a real kind of agility and finesse to doing baking on a larger scale. You need thoughtfulness and thoroughness.” Kerstetter can remember baking at an early age. But for her, the fire was stoked more by curiosity and exploration than something being passed on from a previous generation.

For Samantha Kerstetter, baking is both a science and an art.

“One of my first recollections is being at the kitchen counter at my parents’ home,” said Kerstetter. “My mom didn’t like to bake, but she was like ‘You can have full

rein. You can do whatever you want.’ My mom had an old Mennonite cookbook, and I’d look up recipes. That was kind of my start. I just kind of fell in love with it.”
